IOS 15.x/Memory in Catalyst 2960 Switches series

Hi Guys,
I am just planning to upgrade the IOS on our 2960 Series switches with currently we have 12.x but planning to 15.x.
I have tested on our test environment and found one issue that related to memory utilization as on 12.x IOS they are using very little memory but when tested on 15.x they are using a lots of memory and little free available.
I have few questions.
1. Why this new IOS 15.x utilizing huge memory? and little memory available.
2. What will be happen if the switch is running fully loaded (i.e. Processor 80-90% utilization) then i think the available memory will also be fully utilized?
3. Can we upgrade the memory module in the switch as i don't see any memory module in 2960 so where are the memory module in switches as these memory built-in in the Processor?
Regards,
Saeed

15.0.2-SE6 has the gold star\black outline which means it's "Cisco Suggested",  however I've yet to ever find anything that describes why its Suggested.
It would be really beneficial if more people commented on releases inside of the download section.

  • Catalyst 2960S switch stack support?

I have a customer with a new stack of four Catalyst 2960S switches.
Is this configuration supported by Onplus?
I can't seem to figure out the login access and enable access credentials
so that Onplus can backup the configuration of the stack.

I also have a 2960S stack in my office. I checked my handy OnPlus iPhone App and it shows backup, restore, and firmware all equal 1 which I recall correctly means backup is supported. I'll double check when I get into the office to ensure backups are actually working.

  • Can not administer Catalyst 2960 switch via console

    Hello,
I want to configure my switch via console cable, the switch boots up normally, and there are no configurations present on the switch.  However, anything I type does not appear on the terminal client.  I used several terminal clients (TeraTerm, PuTTY, HyperTerminal), all latest versions as well as different PCs.  I even forced the switch to rommon mode, still, anything I type does not appear on the terminal client.
    Here's the output of TeraTerm:

After the last line, I can not type any command at all.  I encountered this on three 2960 switches that we have here in our laboratory.  Can anybody help me on how I can get access to the switch via console?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Catalyst 2960 Plus Series SI stack problems with a SMC8024L2

    Hi,
I am trying to stack a SMC8024L2 with CISCO 2960. Reading forum topics seems that additional commands are needed for the CISCO... Would someone know what needs to be performed?
Actual symptoms are that SMC looses its IP after several minutes connected. Once that is reseted to fabric values and reprogrammed, it works fine for several minutes, but suddenly is not reachable by web, AND it is not foundable by Nettools.
    Configuration:
    CISCOROUTER/SONICWALL/CISCOSWITCH-SMCSWITCH
    Thanks in advance...!

Well it probably wouldn't be confusing if I could find a clear set of ground rules.  The documentation mentions "FlexStack protocol", but the discussions seem to indicate that this is a control plane protocol. Do the stacking modules operate as ethernet bridges when making forwarding decisions like any other switch port?  If the answer is yes then at least I understand the principal of operation.  But now if you throw multi-chassis etherchannel uplinks into the mix divining general layer 2 paths becomes a little murky.
Although now that I look at it, using this cabling has an advantage over a straight ring topology.  Once a frame hits the stack it is never more than 2 hops away from it's destination.  With daisy-chained switches it could be up to 4 hops.  This is of course assuming standard 802.1d-like forwarding.  This may be an invalid assumption.  I don't see any way to get spanning tree info for the stack ports.
(EDIT:  standard ring topology would also have a maximum of 2 hops to any switch, not 4)

  • Are switches Catalyst 2960S series supported in LMS 2.6?

    Hello,
I have a CiscoWorks LMS 2.6 and i would like to know if the new Switches Catalyst 2960-S Series are supported with this LMS version?

  • Cisco Network Assistant MAC search in Catalyst 2960

    Hi,
Since I updated a Catalyst 2960 switch to IOS version 12.2(55)SE1 I can't do searchs by MAC address, when I do "Monitor->Search" the following error appears:
"The software version of the selected switch does not support some of the CLI commands in read-only mode for this window. You must have read-write access to this switch to display complete information in this window"
If packets are captured you can see that the issued command by the CNA host is "GET /exec/show/mac-address-table/", the answer from the switch is:
    "show mac-address-table
                    ^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.
If I do "Configure->Switching->MAC Address" instead I get the mac address-table correctly. In this case the issued command is "GET /exec/show/mac/address-table/dynamic" and no error is displayed, the answer from the switch is the list of mac-address table.

I have some site admins that use CNA.  I just upgraded their LAN to 3560v2 switches running 12.2(58)SE2 and had them upgrade their CNA software to CNA 5.7(6).  They reported the same error.
I think you clearly indentified the problem.  At one time the IOS command parser accepted both "show mac-address" and "show mac address".  At some point IOS stopped accepting the older "show mac-address" format, and CNA is still issuing this command regardless of the IOS version it is trying to manage.

  • Catalyst 2960 - IBM/Cisco IGESM - Trunk port configuration

    Good day all!
I am new in Cisco world and try to configure a trunk between a Catalyst 2960 switch and a IBM Blade Center IGESM switch (manifactured by Cisco).
Unfortunately, it seems that the network traffic doesn't cross the trunk link.
I have followed (at least, I think so) the instructions given on the different Cisco documentation papers but I can't find the mistake in my configuration (lack of experience :-( !).
Both switches are using IOS. 2960 uses IOS 12.2(25)FX and IGESM uses IOS 12.2(22)EA8.
The ports are connected through a cross-over cable Cat5e.
Please find below the configuration for each ports:
    Catalyst 2960:
    Name: Gi0/1
    Switchport: Enabled
    Administrative Mode: trunk
    Operational Mode: trunk
    Administrative Trunking Encapsulation: dot1q

For my test, I try to ping a blade (connected to IGESM) in VLAN 200 from a workstation connected to Catalyst 2960 (in VLAN 200 too). From a network anaylser (ethereal), I can see the ARP broadcast from each side but none are going across the trunk link.
I am a bit lost about this problem and would be grateful for any assistance in solving it!
Many, many thanks in advance for your time!
    Best regards,

    Hi Glen!
Both switches (Catalyst 2960 & IGESM) are brand new and most ports are still reflecting manufacturer's default configuration. Vlan 2 is the default native vlan for IGESM ports (excluding ports used for switch management which use vlan 1 as most Cisco switches).
I changed the native vlan for g0/5 on IGESM to 200. Now, ports g0/5 (access mode) and g0/20 (trunk mode) are on native vlan 200. On g0/5 is installed Windows 2003 instance (firewall disabled). The only purpose is to receive and send ping request to test connectivity.
My workstation is connected to 2960 switch on port fa0/1 (please find the configuration below). I can successfully ping other vlan 200 machines connected on the same switch. For testing purpose, I try to ping the blade machine connected on port g0/5 on IGESM.
    Configuration of fa0/1:
    Name: Fa0/1
    Switchport: Enabled
    Administrative Mode: dynamic auto
    Operational Mode: static access
    Administrative Trunking Encapsulation: dot1q

Is there any other information I could provide to better help you to understand the configuration?

  • Cisco 2960s Switch replacement

    Greetings,
    Dear Experts,
We are using the Cisco 2960s Switches in our network. We have two failed switches and asked for replacement from our supplier. They informed that the 2960s model is approaching End Of Service (EOS) and the replacement of that model are as below:
    1- WS-C2960X-24TS-L
    Catalyst 2960-X 24 GigE, 4 x 1G SFP, LAN Base
    2-WS-C2960S-24TS-L
    Catalyst 2960S 24 GigE, 4 x SFP LAN Base
What is the best practice to make my decision of which to select? will it make difference from the configuration perspective? is there a possibility for conflict with the existing 2960s Switches?
Many thanks in advance for your kind assistance.
    Thanks and Regards

We have two failed switches and asked for replacement from our supplier.
Time for you to talk to your supplier.  Cisco has announced the EoS/EoL for the 2960S back in November 2014 (End-of-Sale and End-of-Life Announcement for the Cisco Catalyst 2960-S Series and 2960-SF Series Switches).  However, this only means the date of November 2014 is just a date of announcement.  The final date of sale for the 2960S is November 2015.
I think your supplier either is getting confused (didn't read the announcement properly or didn't know) or is just looking for ways to make more money.
is there a possibility for conflict with the existing 2960s Switches?
You can form a stack of 2960S and 2960X.  Just know the limitations, and they are:
    1.  The entire stack must have the same IOS versions;
    2.  The stack speed will drop from 20 Gbps (2960X) to 10 Gbps because 2960S has been set to run only at this speed; and
    3.  You cannot have five or more in a stack if you have a 2960S as a member of the stack.

  • Bandwidth monitoring on a Catalyst 2960

Hello all, I'm working with two Catalyst 2960 switches and I would like to know if there is a way to monitor bandwidth on individual ports. Ideally I would like to have one graph showing a bandwidth usage reading on each port. I tried using the Network Assistant to accomplish this, but I was only able to view one port at a time. I also tried using a traffic graphing program from Paessler, but a MIB file is needed to allow the program to connect to the switch. When I ran a search on the network management page the 2960 was not on the list for MIB supported products. Is this type of graph possible to do? Or is there a more effective way to accomplish what I would like to do. Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.

Hi, we have just swapped all our avaya switches with catalyst 2960 (12, 24 and 48 ports) and 3750 (48 ports with 10gig module).
How do I find what port I should monitor for bandwith graphs?

Hi , i think only four 2960 SF switches can be stacked into a singe logical switch.
Please refer the link , hope this helps:

  • Catalyst 2960 Problem with Cisco SPA512

    Hi there,
I hope someone can help me.
I don't have much experience with switches, I'm doing the desktop support in our company.
We have Catalyst 4510 R+E to 2 Catalyst 2960 switches and seperate VLAN's for IP Phones and for Internet in one part of our office.
Now I'm running into trouble with some IP Phones that are connected to the 2960 switches. It appears only to happen with Cisco's SPA-512. I've tried FW 7.5.2, 7.5.5 and 7.5.5b. These phones sporadically drop the call / connection, with the red MIC button blinking. Based on my research this means that it looses Internet connection. I have 1 SPA512 with FW 7.5.1 that does not show these symptoms.
I have other phones SPA942 and Polycom IP335 in the same area behind the same switches and no issues.
We've tried to disable auto negotiate and set a fixed transmition rate or either 1Gbps and 100Mbps, both without success.
I also have SPA512 in other areas of the office just connected to our Catalyst 4510 R+E and they work just fine. That's why I don't believe it has anything to do with the 4510, but I can be wrong.
That's all I have for you guys. Hope someone can help me to fix / troubleshoot this..
    Frank

  • Gbic loop on catalyst 2960

    Hello,
I would like to know if there is a way to validate that a SFP type 1000baseLX is working properly on catalyst 2960.
I am looking for the loop feature that is available on routers.... but not on switches.
The topology is 2 catalyst 2960 switches with both SFP type 1000baseLX connected together with a fiber. This was working find but actually, the two interfaces are down/down.
The idea is to be sure that the problem is on the fiber and not on one of the SFP....
    Thank You for your help.

UniDirectional Link Detection (UDLD) addresses your concern regarding the fiber. See http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2960/software/release/12.2_46_se/configuration/guide/swudld.html for more information.
For the SFPs themselves, you might want to review http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/modules/ps4999/products_tech_note09186a00807a30d6.shtml for more information.
    Hope this helps.

  • Web Authentication Catalyst 2960

    Hi,
I am trying to configure fallback Web Authentication on a catalyst 2960 switch. The goal is to authenticate clients via web authentication who are not 802.1x compliant (the 802.1x part is working fine) and allow them restricted access to the network. The problem is that the web authentication seems to fail.
The equipment regarding my question : catalyst 2960 switch (version : 122-37.SE) and a FreeRadius.
    Here's what happens :
The authentication window pops up in my browser and the Access-Request is sent to the RADIUS.
The RADIUS in term responds with a Access-Accept. The debugs running on the switch show that all this information arrives correctly at the switch and the Authentication debug outputs a 'status = PASS' and the Authorization debug outputs a 'status = PASS_ADD'. In spite of this the browser on the client outputs a 'Authentication failed' message.
I've read the manual and the Cisco-attribute Value pairs were mentioned : 'priv-lvl=15' and 'proxyacl ...'. Are these mandatory for it to work? Since I'm not configuring any switch login authentication via RADIUS.
    Any suggestions ?
    Thanx in advance

    Yes, they are mandatory.
If priv-lvl=15 is not returned to the switch, the user will see ?Authentication Failed? and the access-list will not be applied. If the source field in the proxyacl statements is not ?any? or there are other syntax errors, the user will see ?Authentication Successful? but the access-list will not be applied and the user will be denied access to the network.
Not sure about the specific FreeRADIUS config, but you need to setup the ?[026\009\001] cisco-av-pair VSA. It would look something like:
    priv-lvl=15
    proxyacl#10=permit ip any any
Let me know if this gets you squared away,
