IOS 4.0.1 Questions...

Hello all, BEFORE I update my 3G iPhone to iOS 4.0.1, I really want feedback from others who have updated.
I updated to 4.0. BIG MISTAKE! Thankfully, I fixed it. Somehow...
So... if my 3G iPhone is working (semi) fine on iOS 4.0, would iOS 4.0.1 help any?
Thanks!

And the signal bars aren't accurate, in my opinion. I'm on a 3G Microcell at home. I used to have 5 bars. Now it's going between 1-5. And I'm in the same room as the Microcell (on a 3G iPhone). So... I don't trust this update for accuracy at all.
@radioplay,
Not to worry. Your signal strength has not changed at all. When you're at home near your microcell, your iPhone is receiving exactly the same cellular radio signal as before. The transmitter in the microcell was not affected one iota by the 4.0.1 update. So you can sleep soundly knowing the your iPhone has not lost any signal.
All that has changed is the number of bars displayed. Before it showed 5 bars. Now it shows 3. Or 2. Or sometimes 1. Apple changed the way they measure the received radio signal, and the size of the little bars displayed, but the actual signal strength the phone is getting from your microcell is the same.

  • I noticed that Find My iPhone on iCloud hasn't worked since iOS 8 came out. My device uses iOS 7. My question is: do I need to upgrade my device? If not, what should I do? I do not wish to upgrade my device.

I noticed that Find My iPhone on iCloud hasn't worked since iOS 8 came out. Whenever I try to use it, it always says "All Devices Offline." This is regardless of whether I am in a good Wi-Fi zone or not.  I like to use Find My iPhone to remotely track my battery charging status whenever my phone is charging in a different room. That's been really handy, which is why I really need to get this fixed. No matter what computer I use, the problem is always the same.
My device uses iOS 7. My question is: do I need to upgrade my device? If not, what should I do? I do not wish to upgrade my device, especially considering the bad things I've heard about iOS 8.
    Feedback would be welcome ASAP.

You don't need to update to iOS 8 to use Find My iPhone.  If you haven't already tried, go to Settings>iCloud>Find My iPhone and turn it off, then reset your phone (hold the sleep/wake and home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, then release).  After it restarts, turn Find My iPhone back on and see if it works properly now.

When you look at how they distribute apps it seems that iPods/iPhones are deemed more portable, which is why they have the better camera features, stuff like weather and passbook and stocks, while Apple doesn't seem to plan for the iPad being used as peoples cameras or being carried around with them on a daily basis....and I know evidenc is to the contrary. I've seen people using their iPad as a camera in national parks and at disneyland.

  • Beginner iOS developer...questions on the universal UI

I'm a first time iOS developer and working on completing a universal puzzle app that supports iOS 6 and above. On the UI front the main UI has 4 buttons (using a custom UI round button class from cocoacontrols.com) and a About button (at the bottom) that you see in a utlity app (Stocks app). The About button is bigger and I have shaded with blue color. Also, on the iPad, I have increased the size of all the buttons slighty bigger than the iPhone version taking into consideration the bigger screen size of the iPad. Is this OK?. I read in some other forums that I should not increase the size of the buttons relative to the screen size but I have seen a few game apps that show bigger buttons on the iPad than on the iPhone and having the same iPhone button sizes on the iPad makes the screen look smaller with smaller buttons.
My other question is on the main UI, one of the button is a Settings button and when the user clicks, I show a screen with 3 settings inside 3 UITableViewCells. On the iPad, do I have to use a UIPopover controller?. Currently, I'm not using it as the Settings screen is displayed upon clicking the Settings button on the main UI. Also, the iPad version shows the table cells slightly bigger to avoid empty space.
I have included 2 screenshots that relate to the questions I'm asking here.
    Please advise.
    Thanks.

If you use big button in iphone maybe Apple can reject your app in app store because all apps must have good presentation, good aesthetic and proportional font and buttons.
You could develop differents views from each device iphone and ipad

  • Sync iOS Apps to iTunes - Questions on how exactly this works...

I'm going to put my questions up top, but my understanding of the current system is below, and may be relevant to the questions, if you'd like to read through it.
How can I back up / restore a SINGLE app, including its data (e.g. a game save file), to either iTunes or the cloud... or anything else for that matter. Does syncing an app to iTunes serve this purpose?
What IS the purpose of syncing an iOS app to iTunes? Does this sync include the data stored on my iOS device? For example, if I have a game in which I've made progress, is this progress stored on both my iPhone and my Mac once I've synced the app to iTunes?
If data IS synced along with the app, how is this data managed? Say I have two iPhones, both with the same game but different progress in each. If I sync iPhone A with iTunes, then sync iPhone B, will iPhone A's data overwrite iPhone B's? Or are there two versions of this app floating around on my mac?
If data is NOT synced along with the app, why on earth would I want a bunch of huge storage-hogging iOS apps that are identical to what I could download from the App Store taking up GIGABYTES of space on my MacBook's SSD?
And finally, should the answer to question 4 be "there is no reason to store 42GB worth of useless apps on your 256GB SSD alongside your already gigantic iOS device backup files," how would I go about removing these apps stored in iTunes without iTunes trying to delete them from my iOS device every time I want to sync some TV shows or podcasts?
    My Understanding So Far:
Of the many things Apple has addressed and improved upon over the years, backing up iOS app data has strangely not been one of them. As I understand it, the only way to back up an app, including its data (e.g. the save data for a game), is to do a FULL backup of the ENTIRE device. The only way to restore an app, including the data that you backed up, is to restore the ENTIRE device, all other apps included, to a previous state.
The driving force behind these questions is that I'd like the option to delete an app from my iPhone when I'm finished with it - but I'd also like the option to re-download it in the future and pick up where I left off. In a perfect world, all these apps would automatically sync through iCloud or GameCenter, or at least have that option to "upload to iCloud" or "restore from iCloud." Even with these apps, I'm not entirely sure where the backed up files exist - somewhere on my iCloud drive separate from my iPhone backup, photos, contacts, etc? Is there a way to see a list of apps that are storing things in my iCloud drive, and even manage this data?
So if I wanted to back up an app's data that does NOT automatically back up to iCloud, it seems my only option would be to install one of the many 3rd party Mac <-> iOS data transfer apps, and copy the contents of the "Documents" folder to a designated directory on my Mac. Then I could delete the app off my iPhone. Say in the future I re-download the app - I'd use the same data transfer app to copy the backed-up data to the re-downloaded app's Documents folder, and we're back in business. The only downside is that if it's been a while and the app has undergone updates, this backed-up data might be corrupt or no longer relevant. Plus, it's kind of a hassle.
When I discovered iTunes was syncing my apps to my Mac, I thought it might be serving as a way to back up my apps, data included, to my computer. Okay, it seemed like a little overkill to sync the whole app along with the data, but when I discovered that you could UPDATE the apps within iTunes, I thought apple had solved the problem of storing backed-up data for out-of-date versions of an app - simply update the app in iTunes, it does what's necessary to your backed-up data, and when you want to put the app back on your iPhone, voila! Your old data's there, AND you've got the most recent version! But apparently this is not at all how iTunes app syncing works.
As I NOW understand it, when iTunes "syncs" an app to your Mac, it includes only the app's core data - the same as if you'd just downloaded it from the App Store, and it does so for EVERYTHING you've purchased, ever, whether or not it's on any of your iOS devices. I can see how this could be convenient if you live on a farm and want to restore an old app to your iPhone without an internet connection, but I don't think it's worth, unexaggerated, a FIFTH of my hard drive. Worse, I can't figure out how to get rid of them.
    TL;DR
So, if you're still with me, what is the purpose of iTunes App Sync, and if it's as useless as I think it is, how do I get rid of it for good?

You can upgrade to Snow Leopard and skip over Leopard, and only upgrade to Lion later if wanted/needed. snow Leopard specs/requirements below.

  • IOS SLB Loab Balance Questions

Forgive me if this is the wrong forum but it was the closest one I found relating to my issue.
I've trying to load balance four of our radius servers using IOS SLB. The config works well and the radius servers are accepting requests fine. I follow this article which wasn't too bad to follow:
    http://www.cisco.com/application/pdf/en/us/guest/netsol/ns377/c649/cdccont_0900aecd800eb95f.pdf
    My two questions are:
    1. Sticky Option
I understand it's used to make sure the client's accounting information
goes to the correct real server, but I'm not sure how it really works
and what's the best time to set it to.
    Eg:
    ip slb vserver RAD-UDP-1646
    virtual 210.x.x.224 udp 1646
    serverfarm RADFARM
    sticky 86400 group 10
    inservice
a/ The documentation says "This configuraion causes the sticky database to store its entries for 86,400 seconds of inactivity". What do they mean by "inactivity" - no radius packets coming through? inactivity from the user's end?
b/ It also says "the client's IP address is added to the IOS SLB database..." - is this the client's framed IP that the ISP assigns to the customer???
c/ And what would be the optimum time to set the sticky timer to be?
    2. SLB connection statistics
    core1-router#sh ip slb reals
real farm name weight state conns
    203.x.x.74 RADFARM 8 OPERATIONAL 0
    203.x.x.78 RADFARM 8 OPERATIONAL 0
    203.x.x.79 RADFARM 8 OPERATIONAL 0
    203.x.x.80 RADFARM 8 OPERATIONAL 2
When you disconnect, the slb stats still show you as being connected to
the real server (and both udp ports) which isn't very accurate. There is a default "delay" time which handles TCP disconnections and after being disconnected for 10 sec, the SLB stats are updated to reflect this (I've verified this works)- but nothing about how it handles UDP disconnections??? This
would skew the stats and give us a very bad misrepresentation of the
number of current and valid connections. Is there anyway to correct this???
    Thanks.
    Andy

Inactivity for IOS SLB means that after specified time of inactivity, the client will be free to be load balanced to another server. As long as they remain active without an idle time , they will remain connected to the same real server. For the client's IP address which is added to the IOS SLB database I think it is the frammed IP address which the ISP assigns. The optimum time for the sticky timer will be its default value or say 60 seconds.

  • Ipad 2 iOS 6 Update App Question

Hi, i just downloaded the new iOS 6 for my ipad 2 and i have a question...why doesn't it have youtube anymore as an app that you can't get rid of? i downloaded the youtube app, that's new, but it's only for ipod. how come the youtube app is still on my ipod then but not on ipad. i really don't know why youtube is gone but other than that i like the iOS 6 update. is there any way for me to get the app back instead of going on safari, google crome, or something else to go to youtube??

YouTube has been removed from the iPad in this iOS. You can download the iPod/iPhone app on the iPad or you can try the mobile site. But you cannot get it back on the iPad.

  • IOS - Library/Cache - Database question

    Hello there,
Some time ago I've read on this forum that the correct directory to use on iOS for storing data is Library/Cache and since then I've fixed my app to use that directory.
Here it is the link to an article written by "our" Saumitra:
    http://www.saumitrabhave.com/2011/11/air-ios-solving-apps-must-follow-ios.html
My app has 2 db files (and some xml files).
    The struct looks like this:
    [root] my main app
    ├──data
│  └──dbtemplates  (this dir contains my two db files)
    └──xml
├──en (this dir contains english localization)
└──it (this dir contains italian localization)
When my app starts, it copies these 2 db files in Library/Cache directory and then the app fills them with data generated on the fly: from that moment my app will use these two new databases for reading and saving datas.
    My questions are:
    1) With this struct, is it true that my app won't be rejected by Apple? (I mean with data/dbtemplates, xml/it and xml/en subdirectories)
    2) Is the Library/Cache the right directory to copy my new db in?
    3) If Apple accepts my app, sooner or later I will develop an update to my app: in that case, if the user has not uninstalled my app, when he updates the app from the apple store, the db files that I stored in Library/Cache won't be deleted from the update process, true?
Unilt today I was pretty sure that the answers to my questions were "yes", "yes" and "yes" but today I've spoken with a friend of mine that told me that I need also to flag my dbfiles as "do not backup" and the only wat to accomplish this is to use a native extension:
    http://www.jampot.ie/ane/ane-ios-data-storage-set-donotbackup-attribute-for-ios5-native-ex tension/
    Can someone clear my doubts?
    Thanks in advance

    1) With this struct, is it true that my app won't be rejected by Apple? (I mean with data/dbtemplates, xml/it and xml/en subdirectories)
Its seems absolutely fine. data and xml are the folders you package as assets right?
    2) Is the Library/Cache the right directory to copy my new db in?
As I see your use case, I think you should rather use the applicationStorageDirectory. Because thes files are essential for your application to work.
    3) If Apple accepts my app, sooner or later I will develop an update to my app: in that case, if the user has not uninstalled my app, when he updates the app from the apple store, the db files that I stored in Library/Cache won't be deleted from the update process, true?
No. As per Apple QnA "the entire <Application_Home>/Library directory has always been preserved during updates and backups, except for <Application_Home>/Library/Caches." See this . So if you store the XMLs in Caches they will be deleted but Not if you store them in applicationStorageDirectory which is (Library/Application Support/....) See recommended usage of this directory here
    About "Do Not Backup Attribute".
As you can see that above link mentions adding the do not backup extended attribute to "Application Support". You should set it if you dont need those files to be backed up but, You should not set this attribute if it is essential for your application to have those files when restored from backup to function properly or get "restored" completely.

  • Ios issues and other questions

    Hello!
First of all i would like to thank resdesign, zaxist and all of the dev team for helping here.
Second, i'm not good at coding and most likely i have used all of the bad practices possible here so continue at your own risk
Anyway, here is the page i've made in edge:
    http://www.nocomprendo.ru
this will change soon, so if you want to see the version at the time of this post - please go here:
    original (unstable on ios6/ios7): http://nocomprendo.ru/test1/america_test.html
no maps (unstable on ios6): http://nocomprendo.ru/test2/america_test.html
no maps and svg-s (stable): http://nocomprendo.ru/test3/america_test.html
you can download source file here: http://nocomprendo.ru/test1.zip
Most of the code is in stage's "composition ready".
It uses a instafeedjs to embed instagram (which is working stable and is easy to implement) http://instafeedjs.com/
It uses fbwall to embed facebook (which is laggy, outdated and i would not recommend it) http://www.neosmart.de/social-media/facebook-wall/
It uses external fonts which can be generated here http://www.font2web.com/
and the loaded to adobe edge. tutorial here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a76Exc8NcqM \
(be sure to remove an .svg file!!!)
Not always legal, though if you need cyrillics (which is a pain as adobe webfonts have only three or four cyrillic fonts) it is a solution.
I would most likely embed wordpress to load some more external content anytime soon as i did it on another project, though i dont know how to do it from inside of edge and i would have to edit the files manually. (i would appreciate any links to tutorials)
Concerning the stability of the edge websites:
embedding of google maps (both old and new API) causes ios iphone/ipad safari and chrome to crash (ios6, ios7).
perhaps the nature of it is in huge iframes i am using. any ideas?
use of any svg files also causes ios iphone/ipad safari and chrome to crash (more likely in ios6 less likely in ios7).
this was mentioned several times on the board and seems like it is not solved yet.
I have questions on making advanced preloaders with percentage bar. (i have seen zaxist's thread) but is there any walkthrough on embedding any javascript preloader like these:
    http://codecanyon.net/item/percentage-preloader/5523389?WT.ac=solid_search_item&WT.seg_1=s olid_search_item&WT.z_author=CodingJack
Also, current preloader option available in edge replaces the white screen before loading composition, but everything that happens in composition ready is seen by website visitor and looks odd. Shall i use creationcomplete or anything else instead?
p.s. yeah, its me going down the south america on a motorcycle, so if youre interested you may follow me in facebook or instagram

    still relevant..

  • IOS 6 Upgrade - Security Questions

I upgraded my iPad to iOS 6. Apple removed YouTube without asking, and to reinstall it, Apple asks me to enter several idiotic security questions. WHY?!?!?!?!?! Please go back to simplifying my life, and stop going on my nerves. This is nothing but annoying! If you think you need to fight Google, don't do it on our backs, we're the customers, remember?
    #$%'&?!

Yes - the YouTube app previously built in to iOS was removed. Google and Apple ended their agreement for Google to supply it.
There are several YouTube apps available in the Apps tore, including one by Google, and the mobile version of YouTube also works quite well in Safari.
The security questions are not directly related to the iOS upgrade, but are part of advanced security measures on your AppleID. And yes you will have to set them prior to using the App store. Everyone with an AppleID has been through this process over the last 6 months or so. It makes our AppleIDs more secure, and that certainly overrides any perceived inconvenient you think is caused. Thats the way it is. Really doesn't matter if it "gets on your nerves".

  • AIR for iOS: Icons & Launch Image question

    Launch Image:
AIR has been so changed since I used it last time, I can't really figure out anything, documentation is somewhat confusing to me. Could you anyone of you please answer my question? To some, it could be pretty simple.
My app is exclusively for iPads, works only in Lanscape mode, so I've included 2 launch images, which name: Default.png & [email protected] (I named them after reading this: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/air/build/WS901d38e593cd1bac1e63e3d129907d2886-8000.html)
When I copied final .ipa file to my iPad 2, well, its launch image appeared in Portrait mode! So, I'm totally confused as how many launch images I need to provide and what should be their name? I use Flash Professional CC to publish, I've included all the launch images in Publishing settings, so is there any order I need to follow or order in Included Files just does not metter? Please keep it in consideration that this app is only for iPads (specified in Publishing dialouge box) and works only in Landscape mode (both, left and right).
    Icons:
I followed the above mentioned webpage and provided Flash Professional CC these icons: 29x29, 48x48, 50x50, 58x58, 72x72, 100x100, 144x144 & 1024x1024. I know 50x50 icon is created by AIR from 48x48, yet I provided it and 512x512 icon is only for development purpose, we need to manually provide it while uploading it to App Store, so I did not provide it.
When I copied final .IPA to iTunes, iTunes does not show App Icon as it used to show for development-ipa. So, I just want to confirm is it normal or I missed something?
Lastly, I copied final .IPA to my iPad 2, when I started it, I noticed that first it show the 'launch image' in Portrait mode (as mentioned above) and after may be 1-2 seconds, the launch image gone and it showed blank (black) screen untill my app started. The blank black screen showed up for 3-4 seconds. Is it normal?
    Thanks.

    Hey Yusuf,
"Default.png" is a portrait mode image for iPhone, iPhone 3 and iPhone 3GS.
    For iPad 1, 2 & Mini you will need a 1024x768 image called "Default-Landscape.png".
For iPad 3 and 4 you will need a 2048x1536 "[email protected]".
So all you have to do is include these launch images in the publish settings and that's it, there is no special order and you do not require any other "Default" images other than those two. This should also resolve your blank screen problem.
It's normal for release builds not to show their App icon in iTunes, you'll notice that when you right click and press "Get Info" on an app you should be able to see the icon.
    Hope that helps,
    O.

  • IOS 4.2 Upgrading Question

I sync my iPhone 3Gs to my Macbook running 10.4.11 so I can't update to the latest version of iTunes and therefore cannot update my iPhone to 4.2 using that computer.
What will happen if I use another computer, that is has the latest iTunes on it, to update my iPhone to iOS 4.2? Will I lose information? Will I still be able to sync the iPhone and my Macbook?

Well when i got sl for 29 it was licensed as a upgrade to leopard.
But it's the full sl install DVD. So perfectly plausible to upgrade from any version with it.
But I had leopard so no bad feelings here of stealing.
The retail version costs ~159 (that's euros, usually same number in dollars), and includes iLife,(iWork?).
But sure licens may have changed for the 29$ sl.
I don't think leopard should be free for tiger ppc users, but full retail prize is too much today, should be on a discount. But anyway for old Mac users that love the Mac way and feel for file associations snow leopard is a bitçh. Leopard was the last version that did this the good way. Mac OS 9 was the last one to do it interrially correct way.

  • IOS & iPhone new features questions from Android user

Hi there. I have heard good things about the new iOS 8.3 and iPhone 6 but find certain aspects restrictive . I'm an Android user for five years running and would like to explore more on the issue / owning an iPhone by focussing on things that matter to me on my day to day use of a phone:
    1. Is there a custom equaliser setting that one can set via the iPhone or iPad itself without setting it on iTunes?
    2. Sharing photos
I have downloaded Dropbox, signed-in, set sharing to Photos enabled and yet it doesn't show when i want to share/forward my photos. Would this sound like a bug or incompatibility with iOS?
    3. Any new battery saving option (like Android) on iOS 8.3?
    4. Any further improvements in terms of support for 3rd-party sharing & saving options like for instance in Shazam and Evernote?
    5. I have a Chromecast and i would like to cast/stream my files so i can listen to my TV. Is there any app to do that?
    6. Is there a way to save an entire article (news or a tech article) from Safari or a third-party app to another app such as Evernote or Notepad? (for reading later)
Any comments are much appreciated. Many thanks.

Have you enabled Camera Upload in Dropbox's Settings?

You can tap on the Activities icon (box with an arrow pointing up and out), tap on the More item on the bottom row (scroll to right if needed) and enable Convert to PDF. Then it can be opened in iBooks, the official PDF reader amongst other things, or install the latest Acrobat DC instead. If the article is already in PDF format, you'll find a Send To… item amongst the allowed activities.
BTW, have you downloaded or read online the full iPhone manual?

  • Iphone 4s using ios 7.0.4 questions (mainly for Apple)

It is apparent that ios 7.0.4 disabled the ability to take screenshots on the iphone and the same key combination (home + on/off) now brings up voice control.  The voice control feature should have a disable option, but there is none.  The screenshot feature is a great way to show developers errors in their apps and to provide the best feedback (pictures do say a 1,000 words).  Will ios 7.0.5 correct this and when will it be out?

This is a user to user forum Apple does not actively participate in these forums.
With that said, the screen shot feature is stil there in iOS 7 it has not been removed.
Voice control (SIRI) is brought up by pressing and holding down on the Home button alone.
To take a screenshot you need only to press the power and home buttons and release them. Don't hold them down.
To make it easier you can press and hold the power/sleep button and then just tap the home button once to take a screenshot.

  • IOS 7 App Store question

Previously when you went to the app store and selected updates it would list the apps that had available updates, once you installed the update that app would disappear from the list. With IOS 7 evry app I have updated remains in that list, is there any way to remove them from the list after updating them?

This is by-design now. They are sorted by the date they're updated. Presumably the change is due to the automatic update feature now so you can see when something was downloaded and updated in the background.
