IOS 4.1 battery drain understood
So I went to the Apple Store locally today to have my iPhone 4 examined for the post iOS 4.1 battery drain and heat issue.
It took about 90 seconds for them to identify an issue and replace my phone. Apparently the 4.1 update changes the modem software rev and actually creates a background process that is unnamed and never stops. It's a bug apparently.
My iPhone 4 was one of the original 600,000 sold on day one. In fact, mine was delivered the day before the release. I am thinking the first phones might be more susceptible to this.
So, the replacement is running 4.0.2 and the older modem FW rev and is absolutely wonderful again. No 4.1 until this issue is resolved.
Point is, there is an actual issue with SOME of the phones, so don't let anyone tell you you're wrong and you shouldn't have to disable ANYTHING to use your phone normally.
The guys at my local store were very helpful and interested in this issue.
Anyway, if you're troubled by the battery drain, take your phone back and let them try to identify if yours is affected. After all, if we want the bugs fixed, we need to let them know and this forum really won't do that.
Good on ya' then. I'm glad it's not widespread. However, it's also not a one-off. If it's a problem the Genius Bar knows about already, then a fix is obviously in the works. Just like with the touch of death, they're in damage control mode until they know how big it is.
I'm so tempted to update the new phone, but it's just working so well on 4.0.2 that the idea of a repeat just terrifies me.

Will Apple fix the iOS 5.1 battery drain issue?
People keep giving battery saving solutions to the iOS 5.1 battery drain problem but that is not the issue. With iOS 5.0 battery life was terriable. Apple quickly fixed it with 5.01. Now with 5.1 battery life is back to terrible. I could go at least two days without a charge. After the update (and all my patterns and behaviors being the same), I don't even get a full day! Apple needs to fix this! Or allow us to go back to iOS 5.01. Will Apple fix this and if so how soon can we expect a solution?
Yes, you need to setup the phone as new. I understand your issues on the whole process of setting everything from scratch, I'm afraid that's the only way out. However, if you look closely, on the whole, it boils down to following issues only.
Contacts - You will get this back once you setup your iCloud account on the phone so it shouldn't be a great issue.
Apps - Do a transfer purchase to your mac/pc before going for firmware complete reset, once you set the phone as new, you can always sync back the apps. This beats the inapp things like game levels, or your pdf docs synced earlier. iBooks can be restored, otherwise enable document and files backup to iCloud in settings before resetting the phone, then you can get everything back from iCloud.
Mails - If you have a mac you can keep all your mail accounts configured on Mail.app, post install you can bring them back from Mail.app to phone easily; otherwise, I'm afraid you need to do everything manually
Settings - you will have to setup your wifi configuration, VPN if any manually from the scratch
Dispite all the hasseles listed above, the battery fix would be a hot sun on the face in a winter day. Go for it! -
IOS 7.1 battery drain iPhone 4S
While the performance increase on iOS 7.1 appears genuine - I'm experiencing serious battery drain on my iPhone 4S (64GB model).
I have parallax disabled as well as background app refresh disabled.
I updated from iOS 7.06 to 7.1 via USB cable attached to my Mac Pro and the latest version of iTunes running on Mavericks latest version as well. I had closed all apps and done a reset before connecting to iTunes where I did a backup and sync prior to updating.
The drain I'm experiencing is during usage, not standby as much. When I use my standard apps (mail, safari, txt, etc.) I'm seeing the battery drain about 1% per minute. I'm not using GPS or bluetooth.
I followed one suggested on Apple Forums to drain battery to about 40%, then do another hard reset. Doesn't seem to help.
Anyone know of similar issues or what to try next?
Are there any tools available to see what apps might be running in the background that are causing the processor to drain the battery so fast? And yes I am now closing all apps after using them to try anything to save battery.
Very tempted to find a way to downgrade to 7.06...Thought I'd reply to this seen as no one else has, I am also experiencing very similar problems with my 4s and by the looks of it is it's across all handsets. I've never had any battery issues with my iPhone even 7.0.6 was fine, but since updating to 7.1 the battery is ticking down very fast. I fully charged in the morning and left it in my locker all day at work when I got my hands on it it's gone down to 52% just on its own!!
I really hope they sort this out fast the irony is 7.1 was supposed to help battery life! -

i have an iPhone 5s 16GB running ios 8.2 and i am facing a huge battery draining , even i did the following :
reduce motion closed
turned on increase contrast
turn off fetch mail
turn off blue tooth
using only 2G or 3G no 4G/LTE
decrease the brightness
no games
turn off location services
turn off hotspot
turn off motion & fitness
device only 4 months old and it's new not used so it's not a battery issue
anything that may drain the battery and it's still draining very fast so kindly Apple make an update to fix this
there is a lot of people i know are facing this so it's not a battery issue it's a software issue

After take a look at another iphone user's forums, too many people complain about the battery.
submitted for your information.In most cases the problems when switching to a new iOS version are (as I had with my switch from iOS6 > iOS7):
- rogue app process (app not updated yet to iOS8/8.1) check Settings > General > Usage > Battery usage in percentage to determine which app is using much more battery although you haven't used it at all or much.
- settings in e-mail receiving is changed
- background app refresh (turn it off if you do not need it)
- location services (look carefully which apps you want to use this feature)
- notifications (look carefully which apps you want to use this feature)
- Facebook app

IOS 5 rapid battery drain (including in sleep mode), springboard crashes: FIX!
OK folks, I resolved all issues in their entirety with the help of a genius bar tech who recognized that I was very technical. WARNING! Sync or backup your phone prior to performing these steps!
First, do a MANUAL download here of the IOS 5 that matches the model of phone you have and save that image to your desktop or some other place on your computer. PUT THE PHONE IN DFU MODE, not recovery mode (google on how to accomplish if you are not familiar). The raeson why you are going to put in DFU mode is so that you will be able to not only get a good copy of IOS 5 installed but to ensure that your firmware is not corrupt, which appeared to be the case with my battery drains and springboard crash issues.
One you are in DFU mode (your screen should be black the whole time, again google), open itunes and it will give you a warning that says that your phone needs to be restored. If you are on a mac, hold down the option key and press RESTORE in iTunes. This will open up a box that will allow you to "locate and select" a file, which will be the IOS 5 image that you manually downloaded before.
Once you do, the iphone will start to restore. After all of the restore cycles have been completed, you will be prompted in iTunes to either setup as a new phone or restore from backup. I USED RESTORE FROM BACKUP so that I could preserve all of my settings. Everything has been working PERFECTLY ever since completing these steps! I will probably go ahead and make a separate thread related to this fix.

Another item to check are you E-mail accounts. If you only have one account in this section then you should be good. If you have multiple and have every feature turned on (Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, etc) then your device could be trying to update to all and timing out which would get it to retry over and over again. I have turned off all the other features for my email accounts with the exception of iCloud and my battery life is looking good. -

After installing iOS 8 I'm starting to hate my smartphone. With iOS 7 the battery lasted until the evening while now barely reaches mid-afternoon with the same use of the phone and being careful not to leave apps in the background. I had the same thing yesterday. After google gave me nothing and after I was sure my phone had enough charge to restart, I did a reset on my phone...
Holding down the Power button, volume button and selector button on the front - for about 30 secs (or untill I knew the beeping had stopped).
I cant remember if I then restarted it or it it restarted itself, but now its back to normal! No memory loss from the phone either.
Freeked me out as its a new iphone 4s but glad to have it back! Without having to take it to get fixed by a pro.

The battery on my iPod touch has been acting very weird and I don't know why. I just got this iPod two weeks ago for christmas. When the battery gets down to half a battery, weird things start to happen. The battery drops 15,20,25% in the matter of minutes. On top of this, my iPod touch always dies at 10%. IPod touch 5 battery drains very quickly even when not used
HI , I got a new iPod touch 5 for Christmas and let the battery drain before charging to 100%.
within a very short period of time and without using the iPod , (poss 2 - 3 hours ) the iPod was completly flat and would not even show the charging symbol.
