IOS 4.1 issues: 2nd gen ipod touch: safari and weather

In general i did not like what the upgrade from 3.1.3 to 4.0 did to my touch. It become soooooo sloooow on mail and had shortened battery life. However to be fair, the wifi range was improved a little and also network speeds. Clicking on settings however caused a blank screen for around 6 seconds (tap tap tap go the fingers...) whereas on 3.1.3 it was <1 second. Could not revert to 3.1.3 as the cert had expired by the time I got around to it (a couple maybe 3 days) so onwards and upwards...hoping that 4.1 might have fixed a few bugs
(I should know better by now, majornumber.minornumber = upgrade with new bugs, majornumber.minornumber.yetanothernumber = most bugs fixed, like say dos 6.22)
I took the plunge and upgraded to 4.1
good news: some bugs are fixed:
1. it only takes about 3 seconds now (vs 6 before) to open settings
2. battery life seems a scosche better
bad news and weirdness:
1. safari was formerly the king of ipod browsers for me however OS 4.1 introduced a new bug into safari:
on a site I scan a lot for finance news zerohedge.com/rss.xml it comes up fine as before to the first page via a redirect to reader.mac.com -
http://reader.mac.com/mobile/v1/http%3A%2F%2Ffeeds.feedburner.com%2Fzerohedge%2F feed
but when I click on any link in the wonderfully formatted for ipod/iphone RSS feed it now goes to a blank page whereas before it would snap up the RSS synopsis in a blink. Now nothing. On my macbook the feed wroks just fine as it always has of course there it's feeds.feedburner.com/zerohedge/feed without going through reader.mac.com
Could be co-incidence except it was working right before the upgrade and then not right afterwards. Might be an incompatibility with reader.mac.com just introduced... oh well I will just have to write my own RSS formatter for ipod touch and make it work on any browser so I won't need a broken safari any more. Sad really as Safari had quite the edge before.
2. *weather app* I live in San Diego, CA and I use the weather app a lot to check what the temperatures for the day and the week are likely to be.
Right before the os 4.1 update I checked the temperatures for San Diego and it showed expected temps which agreed with the weather channel on the TV right in front of me.
Now this is weird: right after the update, the temps on the weather app now show 7 F more than on the weather channel!
I'm used to both the temps on the weather channel and the weather app agreeing to being off by about the same amount for where I live, I just add a few degrees to the high as we live a few miles inland from downtown.
The only explanation for this new weirdness that I can think of is that 4.1 is somehow using location awareness to give more accurate temps (hah what would be the chance of that?).
If that is the case then I'd like to be given the option to choose which zip to use.
OTOH maybe its just an interesting bug....
I tried deleting and re-adding San Diego, CA but same result, also tried switching off location services, no difference.
Oh well I'll wait for 4.1.02 <wide-grin>
So if you know how to fix these things other than me writing my own RSS reader and mentally subtracting temps to correct, let me know!

several days later.... today the weather app is still broken:
weather.com says right now 80F for san diego, ca but on the weather app on the
touch it says 91F that's quite the discrepancy.
I note that there have been numerous similar problems for folks after updates over the last several years...guess the wethaer app must have a continuuing glitch built into the software. Tried reloading it from 92093 and same result so it isn't a location issue.
Can't believe I'm the only one with this issue given how many hits I get for similar issues on previous upgrades.
Right now it is still soooo broken. Thanks for all the attention Apple, so nice to know y'all care. Love the "let's beta test on the live system" upgrade MO. If anyone should have a test suite for everything it should be Apple. Forget support looks like android is the place to go. see ya.

  • Can I put iOS 5 on my 2nd Gen iPod Touch?

Hello, I have a 2nd Gen iPod touch and I cannot get any apps because I have an older ios. Can anyone help me?

To more easily find compatible apps:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.
Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

  • Is there any way to upload iOS 5 on my 2nd gen iPod Touch?

I purchased a 2nd generation iPod Touch, in January 2010, and at the time, this was the most current version available. It is the iPod touch, before the last one to not include a Camera (3rd Gen). I would really like the new features, and would especially like to upload iCloud to it (I have Lion on my computer). I am not in any mood to purchase a new iPod touch soon. I am happy with the old one, but would love the upgrade.
Apple, can you please design iOS 5 for the iPod touch 2 gen? It would be helpful to many iPod users, and there will be more than one happy face (mine) if you do it.
Whenever I sync my iPod touch with my computer, it keeps saying my software is up-to-date. I have the version 4.2.1, and apparently it is up to date. Wish it weren't!

You aren't addressing Apple here.   Send feedback to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipodtouch.html
But since your iPod Touch doesn't have the required hardware to support iOS 5, it will never be made available for it.

  • Upgrade iOS 2.2 on 2nd gen iPod touch to iOS 3/4?

    Hi,
This is my first post in this forum. I have an iPod touch 2G on iOS 2.2. For quite sometime I stopped using it, and now am back on it only to find that most of the apps require OS v3.0 or later. I browsed through discussions here and seems like upgrading to OS 4.2 (which pops up in my iTunes as soon as I plug in my iPod) has not been smooth and many have faced issues, which makes me bit hesitant to upgrade mine.
Can I upgrade my iPod OS to anything on v3.0+ instead of going to v4.2? If not, if only v4.2 is the option, will the upgrade wipe out my songs, apps etc? Also, how much does it cost since I was not able to get that number anywhere?
Looking for some help here, thanks in advance !

You can only upgrade to the latest version.
There are no more issue reported with this update than there are from every other update ever released.
These forums are full of complaints about issues ( many self inflicted) with every single update ever released.
Most never have an issue of any kind an don't even know these forums exist.
Just as a hospital is full of sick people, these support forums are full of people with issues.
I have never had an issue, nor have I met anyone who has.

Nothing.  The 2nd Gen Touch is OBSOLETE and is WAY past its support life.  If you want to run the newer apps you have to buy a newer iPod.

  • HT204266 is there a way to get older versions of apps? I have a 2nd gen ipod touch with ios 4.2.1

is there a way to get older versions of apps - for a 2nd gen ipod touch with ios 4.2.1

The only way is to jailbreak and download cracked apps, but I would recommend you wouldn't do that as this is piracy and jailbreaking is illegal in some countries.

  • 2nd gen iPod touch+iOS 4.2.1=problems

Hi!I have a 2nd gen iPod touch which has iOS 4.2.1 I'm using it with a Samsung Galaxy microphone headset. Since I have iOS 4.2.1 on the iPod, it skips tracks, stops in the middle of the track and starts to play another one or just simply puts itself into FFW or stops while in my pocket. I'm using the device with this Samsung Galaxy earphone/mic combination for a long time, however I had no problems with it under earlier iOS versions. The shuffle for shake option is switched off in the settings of the iPod. Why is my iPod still going crazy in my pocket? Even when the screen is locked?

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults.
If you still have the problem then you may have a problem with the headphones. Maybe a bad connection or intermitent short/open.

  • 2nd gen iPod Touch - screen - contrast ratio issue?

    hello
i was wondering if anyone else have this problem / issue
what i notice in the 2nd gen ipod touch compare to the the 1st gen touch
is the the differences in contrast of the screen
1st gen ipod touch appears to be darker
and 2nd gen ipod touch lighter or "washed out"
the black in the 2nd gen doesnt appears to be black black, if anyone knows what im talking about
and when comparing to the magenta or blue 2nd gen also appears lighter
mind you i have set both brightness setting to FULL bright and NO Auto-brightness
i can understand that there is off course difference in LCD but the difference is quite noticeable
if anyone else have this issues please voice your concern I hope im not the only one out there.
i would ideally prefer the screen contrast to be in between the washed out of my 2nd gen ipod touch and the 1st gen ipod touch
and is there a way to fix it?
    cheers

Well, I think it is fixed or I have gone the longest amount of time with the screen not going dim, no thanks to Apple.
I went as far as trying to jailbreak my ipod and "downgrading" to iOS3. I got it jailbrokenm but could not downgrade to anything, so I went back to iOS4.2.1.  It actually worked worse while jailbroken, the screen never lit up.  The "fix" came about when I created a whole new library for the ipod, loaded a fresh download of iOS4.2.1 and took all of the extra apps off and so far the screen has been staying lit all the time.  the only thing i can think off was that there was something wrong with library file.  Now if Apple could come up with an easy was for me to have my ipod open the new library when connected istead of me having to do the Shift+click method, becasue I am not sure if it is safe to delete the original library file.
Anyone having the same problem try creating a new iTunes library and copying your music files over, hopefully it helps you too.

  • 2nd gen ipod touch obsolete?

ever since earlier this year, I have been noticing that more iOS application updates are no longer being written for iOS 4. this wasn't a major concern until a week ago, when I started noticing that the number of updates that were incompatible with my 2nd gen ipod touch had gone from 4 to 13 within 8 days of each other. since there looks to be fewer and fewer apps that will run under iOS 4, I have gotten to wondering about my current iPod. A few months ago, my 2nd gen iPod Touch was diagnosed by the genius bar in SF. the employee who ran the tests told me that my iPod was having some hardware issues, and a replacement would cost me $99. I really didn't see the point in doing anything at the time, but, if I am not going to be able to use the iPod as I have been doing for the past 3.75 years, then it might be time to replace it. I know that apple will discontinue support for iOS 4 completely before too long, and I don't want to be stuck with an ancient ipod. I was stuck with an ancient ibook g4 for 7 years prior to getting my current MacBookPro. any suggestions or feedback would be greatly welcomed! thanks

"Do we simply toss them out?"
    No.
"I think that this is a little ridiculous"
Since you don't just "throw them out", there is no "ridiculousness".
"I paid for a product that I can no longer use simply because it is older."
Baloney.  You can use the product, until it's no longer operational.  If it breaks, you can have it repaired outside of the warranty.

  • 2nd Gen iPod Touch Doesn't Charge at all

2nd Gen iPod Touch Doesn't Charge at all, not on pc or mac or wall or anywhere. I need the information on it, last time it was backed up was 2 years ago, cracked glass and bad headphone jack. can Apple help me get my info out of it? it is out of warranty, can i pay to have it fully recovered as if it never died?

Try connecting it for a charging source for 24 hours.
    Then try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Then see if iTunes can see the iPod so you can get info from it
    - Inspect the dock connector for bend or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genus Bar of an Apple store. They may or may not be able to get info from the iPod. It depends upon what is wrong

  • HT4623 i think i got the 1st or 2nd gen ipod touch how do you update it??

i think i got the 1st or 2nd gen ipod touch how do i update it?

    To update
Connect the iPod to your computer and update via iTunes
iTunes 10 for Windows: Update and restore software on iPod, iPhone, or iPad
A 1G iPod can go to iOS 3.1.3
A 2G to 4.2.1. Requires iTunes version 10.X. That requires a Mac with OSX 10.5.8 or later. With 1OSX 10.4.11 you can only go to iTunes 9.X which gets you as high as iOS 4.1

  • HT4205 cant find airplay on my 2nd gen ipod touch can you help ?

cant find airplay on my 2nd gen ipod touch can you help ?

What are you trying to AirPlay to? The AirPlay icon only appears if you have an AirPlay receiver ready to accept the media from the iPod.
Also, see the following. The 2G not hot have iOS 4.3 or higher.
From the Videos, iPod, Photos, Music, and YouTube apps on iOS devices, stream videos, music, and photos to an Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation), or stream music to an AirPort Express or compatible third-party device.
With iOS 4.3 and later, you can also stream video and audio from a website or a third-party app installed on your iOS device if the developer for the app or website has added AirPlay functionality.
