IOS 4.2.1 intermittent data

Wifi connection will disconnect intermittently on both my iPhone 3G and iPhone 4. This happens sometime to both at the same time, or one at a time.
I did a lot of test on my wireless network trying to find the cause of this. What i discovered shows that it is a problem with the iphones or the iOS, and definitely not my network.
When the iphone 4 would not load web pages, or App Store, I tried pinging the local I.P. address for it. It did not show any response to the ping. As if no device was there.
I also ran a network ping app called "Ping Lite" It allows me to ping the entire network. While simply trying to ping my router, i received no response.
I tested this literally for six hours. Most of that time it failed to ping. Sometimes, it would ping just fine, with 0% packet loss, and anywhere from 10 ms to 100 ms response times.
Sometimes it was both phones at the same time, other times it waas one at a time. I even went as far as having the app do a continuos ping, on both devices at the same time, while having three CMD windows open on the PC desktop pinging both devices AND my router.
The two iphones would intermittently lose connection to the router every few minutes for a few minutes at a time (sometimes 15 or so minutes). The two CMD windows pinging the two iphones would show that the devices were not responding in kind. But my wireless router never failed to respond to the PC, and had an average response of up to 2 ms (and PC is using wireless connection).
I haven't tested 3G for this problem yet. Although, I do see the antenna strength go from 4 bars to 0 bars, sitting on my desktop, not being touched at all. ON BOTH PHONES, and not at the same time. One phone will be full up, while the other has no signal at all.
I did notice immediate but temporary repair by simply turning wifi off/on again.

Oh, yes, btw, every tip to I have seen to get data to reconnect has worked. Power off, shut down, airplane mode and back, wifi off and back, reset network settings, it also fixes itself if I leave it long enough. Problem is it always comes back.
Forgot to mention this, streaming video (I.e. Netflix, Hulu) work absolutely fine. Once they start. If the data connection is good, and I get a video to start, it will run the entire video. There will be an occasional hiccup in network speed. The video quality will drop for a few seconds, and come right back to high quality (HD?). This might happen once or twice, but not often.
This data glitch seems to be on creating a connection.

So were all my acquired apps, although those have been replaced - now I can begin or attempt to reconstitute the complex folder structure (notes, notes 2, notes 3, etc.) which grew over the last few iOS iterations, from too many apps stuffed into folders with strict limitations on contents. Tedious, but possible. Re all the photos, I'm still looking for clues: Is solid state storage similar to that on disk drives – does deleted information still reside on the drive, just not on the index?
    Also, post updating, I am continually being prompted to authorize my computer, even though it is, and my Apple ID is intermittently rejected as if invalid, this is causing syncing challenges.

    Same for me, when install was finished all was gone, but strange enough the disk space bar was indicating 14Go other and that was exactly my content "in app" without apps, photos, video and music. So this data was not accessible due to missing apps and all my photo/video/music was gone.
    I had exactly the same issue last upgrade, and last time I decided to resync my media content and started to add apps one by one again, and by magic almost all the apps managed to find back their data in the 14Go "other" that was still in the IPad. But I had to redo a lot of work like Icon position, some settings, and some apps didn't restore well. Took me a very long time and effort to get back to a nominal situation.
    So this time I deciced instead to click "Restore" before doing any sync and used the backup that was generated automaticly just before the upgrade to 5.0 (so still with version 4 of ths IOS)
    The process started, the Ipad rebooted and firmware was then loaded again (still 5.0) and the 14Go data from the backup was reloaded also, and this time after this quite long step, itunes started to restore apps, music, photos and videos one by one ... was quite a very long process but at the end all was perfect, storage was back to 40 Go including my 14Go data and all photos, videos and apps, with all setting perfectly restored.

    If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

    If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
    Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
    Tip 2 - If you are updating using wifi, locate your iPad close to your router so you don't get a wifi dropout (can cause update corruption).

    Just upgraded iphone 4s to iOS 5.1.  Now when I am not connected to wifi, my cellular data usage is constant and rapid.  No apps are open, no data usage that I am aware of.  But when I check the cellular data usage, it goes up by about 1MB every minute.  Just the day before on iOS 5.0, no cellular data would be used with all apps closed.

    Iphone 3GS. updated to iOS 6.0.1 Friday. Data usage until then about 300MB
    Sunday Morning around 4am. Phone incredibly hot even though connected to charger and home Wifi network. Usage exceeds 3GB for month and extra 3.5GB. Total usage in 12 hours 6.5GB.
    Sunday afternoon after receiving message from AT&T about excess data, turned off Cellular Data and 3G and limited to only Wifi.
    Monday evening 2GB cellular data. Total data usage in 2 days 9GB????? W/T/F ???
    Even when 3G and cellular data is turned OFF, 2GB used up?
    Now, turned OFF Cellular data and Wifi and using it as a regular phone with texting and calling. Maybe will buy a regular phone and be done with all these useless charges. Someone should be held accountable here.

    Using the iPhone camera, I take a photo and then I want to make the photo a little brighter.
    So, I edit a photo using iPhoto for iOS and then save the photo back to the camera roll.
    Now, I might want to see where that photo was taken via another app (like Photo Mapo) or on the map using the Photos app, or even the Mac iPhoto app.
    However, the GPS data has been removed. Looks like all of the other exif data is still in the photo.
    Why not just have a feature to remove the GPS data if the user wants? no reason to remove it for them.
    The user explictily chose to have location services turned on so the GPS data would be in the photo.
    Is this a bug?

    First thing to try is a reboot of your iPad. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the iPad restart. See if that fixes your problem.
    None of my cameras has a GPS function so I never see that data in the info of a photo in iPhoto for iOS. But I do see the map choice to set a location for the photo. Perhaps a reboot will fix this for you.

    For instance: I play my "lucky take" on the virtual piano, and now I am curious how it would sound on let's say a organ. Normally I would select the midi content out of the piano track and copy it into the organ track. I cannot figure out how to do this in GarageBand for iOS. Is there anyone out there with a solution?

    It is limited, how you can move regions between tracks. Basically, you can move between tracks with the same touch instrument.  See the help: http://help.apple.com/garageband/ipad/2.0/index.html#chsec12c15d
    Move a region
    Drag the region left or right to move it forward or back in time. Align the left edge of the region with the bar or beat on the ruler where you want it to start playing.
    Drag the region up or down to move it to another track with the same Touch Instrument. You can also drag regions between Keyboard and Sampler tracks, and between Audio Recorder and Guitar Amp tracks. Smart Drums regions cannot be dragged to another Smart Drums track.
    If you move a region so that it overlaps another region, the overlapped part of the “covered” region is deleted.
    Paste a region
    You can paste a region you have copied, or paste an audio file from an app that supports copying audio to the clipboard. GarageBand supports 44.1 kHz sample rate, 16-bit depth uncompressed audio files.
    You can paste copied regions to another track with the same Touch Instrument. You can also paste regions between Keyboard and Sampler tracks, and between Audio Recorder and Guitar Amp tracks. Smart Drums regions cannot be pasted to another Smart Drums track. Audio files copied from another app can be pasted to Audio Recorder or Guitar Amp tracks.
    Move the playhead to the point where you want the region to start.
    Tap the header of the track where you want to paste the region to select the track.
    Tap the track where you want to paste the region, then tap Paste.You can also tap an empty area of Tracks view, then tap Paste. In this case the region is pasted into the currently selected track.

    OK, restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode when you hear the start up tone hold down the Shift Key until you see a progress bar. Let it fully boot then restart normally and test.
    Also I am assuming you have checked Finder - Preferences  - General and see what boxes are checked in "Show these items on desktop." You can also mount an item in Disk Utility, simply highlight it and then look in the File menu for Mount.....

    Maybe you have a beta version of iOS6 in your Ipad. if is this, you have to put the ipad in recovery mode in itunes and then the update will start.
    To put the ipad in recovery mode, you have to turn of the ipad. In your pc/mac Itunes has to be running, and plug the cord, but when you do that you have to press the home button until a message shows up in itunes!!

    No, it uses too much cellular data. Also if your phone is running fine on IOS 7.1.2 I'd hold off upgrading until a few more  of the bugs have been worked out of IOS 8.

    The 3G cannot be updated to iOS6, it can only go to iOS 4.2.1.
    Activation issues are generally the result of the device being hacked or jailbroken.

    Thanks for the reply Brenden.  However the problem is:
         At the very bottom of the "Mailboxes" screen (where I've got 6 email addresses that do work) there is on the far right (bottom right corner) an icon to compose a new message.
         In the center of that space is a generated message that says:  1) "downloading x of y" and 2) when finished downloading it says "Updated on 9/26/14." today is 11/6/14!
         My problem is that that date hasn't changed since I upgraded to iOS 8.1.  The emails are current, but that date isn't!
    Can you help?

    I can help you for the future.  Regularly back up your computer to an external hard drive (or cloud alternative).  If you have your library backed up, it could be reinstalled on your new computer.  In your current situation, you will have to reload all of your CDs as syncing of non-iTunes purchased music is only one way (Computer to iPod)

    What you would do is set up your new one. Don't try to restore it from the backup, just set it up, update it and then wipe it (settings, general, erase all content and settings)
    then set your new ipad up again but this time choose to restore it from the backup of your old one.
    Basically you set it up just enough to download and update it, then you wipe it and restore it.
