IOS 4.2 killing iPad battery in sleep mode

I noticed the battery in my Touch was dropping overnight after upgrading to 4.0. I have been turning off the Wi-Fi when I am not using it and it has been holding a charge.
I just upgraded both my wife's and my iPads to 4.2. We are both experiencing problems with battery drain while in sleep mode. I charged my iPad to 100% then let it sleep for four hours. When I powered it back on it was at 96%. Without using it, I checked again in two hours and it was at 94%. My wife's iPad is the same. I turned off the Wi-Fi and will check again in a couple of hours to see if it is still falling. It's obvious that something in the new iOS is continuing to draw a lot of power while in sleep mode. That would suck if I had to remember to turn off the Wi-Fi and 3G every time I stop using my iPad. Anyone else seeing the same problems with their iPad's and iPod Touch's?

I have experienced the same problem. Since I have upgraded my iPhone and iPad two days ago the battery in both devices drains rapidly. Last night at 10 p.m. The iPad was fully loaded with all applications shut down. I didn't touch it until 10 a.m.the next morning and the battery was down to 62%. Before the update it would have been still out 100%. It's practically the same with my iPhone. It takes just a little bit more than half a day for the battery to be below 20%. In addition the navigation system on the iPhone shuts down frequently and it is does not take new calendar entries. A lesser problem is the fact that opening the calendar takes very much longer than usual. All these problems coincide with the update and as it happens to be on different devices I am most certain that the new software is the problem. I can only hope that Apple will very quickly solve these problems.

Smart Cover isn't functioning correctly.  When lid is in place I can still see my iPad on with screen light.  No click sound after lid is place also.  I have remove the Smart Cover and fitted it to my iPad but still Smart Cover sleep mode is not working.

Go to Settings>General and make sure the switch to iPad Smart Cover On/Off is set to On.

  • Can I receive messages from Skype when my ipad is in sleep mode and the app is closed?

Ok, can I receive messages from Skype when my ipad and iPod touch are off, and the app is closed? Becuase my mom sent me a message and I did nott receive it. I have to have the app running or running in the background to receive messages. Is there a way to recieve messages when my ipad and ipod do NOT have the app running?

The ipad may keep a connection alive in sleep mode.. but it should only use local connection AFAIK, and no internet content.
I have a similar setup with iPad and although it has an IP it is not actually reachable on the network. I will track usage and see if it is actually using anything but I would doubt it.
Now of course it may depend on what apps you have running. I really doubt the ipad will be using that much of your download unless you are watching movies on it.

  • Ipad 3 in sleep mode the wifi shuts off

The wifi on my ipad 3 just started shutting off in sleep mode. Could this be my router? I've tried resetting my ipad.

    You are most welcome

  • Battery and sleep mode

forgive me if this has already been posted before but i am new to this. so here's my deal; my power cord is plugged in and the little light is green but my computer keeps going into battery reserve where the screen dims and then it goes into " sleep mode " if thats what its called. its never ever done this before so i dont know why it suddenly started. also, the battery percentage is slowly going down, it used to be at 100% about...two weeks ago and now its at 96% and it keeps going lower when it goes into sleep mode for a long time. is my battery busted?

    Hi tjk,
    thank you for your reply.
I will do that, if there is no other solution. I just thought, it'll be better to know what's the problem with my mac...
But probably you're right, this will be the best solution.
The repair techs would be the best person to ask that.

  • Latest iOS update is killing the battery on my iPhone 5, how do I go back to the old one?

I just updated my iOS a few days ago, and now my battery is draining at a rate of 20% every hour.  I've turned off everything I can think of, including bluetooth, wifi, gps, etc., and it's still exactly the same.  I have not been using my iPhone anymore than before, if anything, maybe less.  Is there any possible way to go back to the old iOS version?  Would a system restore from an old backup work?  My phone is not lasting more than a few hours before it dies... I really need to get this fixed.

    Viewing Usage Statistics
Awareness of how you use your iPhone and knowing how long your battery typically lasts can help you improve its battery life. You can view your iPhone usage statistics by tapping the Settings icon on the Home screen and choosing General > Usage. Under the “Time since last full charge” heading you’ll see two items:
Usage: Amount of time iPhone has been awake and in use since the last full charge. The phone is awake when you’re on a call, using email, listening to music, browsing the web, or sending and receiving text messages, or during certain background tasks such as auto-checking email.
Standby: Amount of time iPhone has been powered on since its last full charge, including the time the phone has been asleep.
When these two times are the same or very close together, that is almost always indicitive of something using your phone's battery life, even if you're not using it - (e.g. auto-lock set to "Never", Email auto-checking options set to "Push" and the email account having many mailboxes/folders)

  • The IOS 6 update killed my battery.

Only a night after installing the new IOS update, i noticed my iphone acting very strange. I had it at 100% battery in the morning, and not an hour later it had depleted by over 50% and was draining rapidly in front of my eyes. However, once it reached one percent, it didn't die. Instead i was able to use my phone ALL DAY..... though it says its on one percent. But the problem is when i tried to restore it to undo my mistake of updating, it shut down, and is stuck on the charging battery screen, still in the red at suppossedly 1% battery, and wont charge. My computer no longer recognizes my iphone and when it occassionally DOES seem to work, it still insists that i only have one percent battery even if i can use it for hours. I'm very concerned, since i paid a lot for my phone, and its very new, and all my friends are having the same problem. I want a guarenteed fix, since i cannot afford to send it away for repair and get it replaced, especially if it's Apple's fault for it breaking and not mine. Please, im desperate to use my phonee again!!!

Battery issues are sometime difficult to solve. To trouble-shoot, you can Restore iPhone on computer with iTunes and at end when prompted, Set Up as New iPhone. See if better. If still problem, all iPhone 4S have full Warranty, make Genius Reservation and take iPhone to Apple for resolution.

  • Does your Wifi drop when your iPad mini went into sleep mode after upgrading to iOS 7?

Dear iPad mini users, to those who have upgraded to iOS 7 like I did, do you experienced WiFi drop when your iPad is in sleeping mode? I noticed this problem only few days after upgrading my iOS. Initially I don't think there is such issue. After your iPad mini recover fom sleep mode, then it will automatically connect to WiFi again. My point is it no longer connected to WiFi in sleeping mode and so could not keep me up-to-date with my mail if I am on WiFi.
Do share your view and if there is a solution, do share with me please. I have tried almost all solutions available online but no no avail. At the moment, I am activating my 3G network so that when mail came in, my iPad will notify me even during its sleeping mode but this is getting expensive considering I am using the 3G 24 hours every day now.

I found an solution. Go to Settings/Mail, Contact, Calendar/Fetch new data and than enable Push and choose to fetch hourly or every 30 minutes. In this case your iPad will stay connected to wifi even when smart cover is closed. If you select Manualy than wifi connection will be terminated when in sleep mode.

  • Ipad is not connecting to wifi in sleep mode after iOS 6 update

I used to be able to receive FaceTime calls when ipad was in sleep mode but ever since this past update I don't. I had problems like everyone else wi connecting to the Internet but I was able to fix that. Is there any way the ipad can stay connected while in sleep mode.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • IOS 8.1.2 safari battery usage

Ever since updating to iOS 8.1, my iPad battery life has declined to the point that i have to recharge every day.
the only things i use my iPad for are safari, Facebook, google play books, stock music app, and youtube.
I've checked battery usage, and safari has 90 percent of the battery usage.
i have also factory reset the device, tried to keep screen brightness below 50 percent, and shut all apps, but that makes no difference.
i have also updated to iOS 8.1.2, and it made no difference.
am also considering a nexus 9

i have same problem, than battery percentage jump from 60 to 45 e in this way my problem is very bud. ios 8 last update is installed on my iphone 5. i think that it is a bug software, and i think this because i called apple support and diagnostic realt time with operator say that my battery life is better. and after home button bug fixed with ios 8.1 now i have this. this ios 8 is the worse update ever.

  • My iPad 2 was in sleep mode.  When it came back on everything was red and the contrast was terrible.

I Have an iPad 2 16g which is 31/2 years old.  I am on IOS 8.1.2.  My iPad was in sleep mode for a couple of hours.  When I turned it back on, everything has a bright red hue and the contrast is terrible.  I have tried all the things in Accessibility, but nothing seems to help.  I don't know what other information may be needed to help.  Please let me know how to help figure out what is going on.  Thank you.

    Try the following:
    1. Reset
Hold the Sleep and Home button down until you see the Apple logo

  • My ipad doesn't seem to make a sound when it is closed or in sleep mode to let me know there is an imessage until you see it on the screen that someone has imessaged.  When you're taking it makes the swoosh sound, just not when it's in sleep mode.  Help

Am having some problems with the sounds on my ipad, specifically my imessage notification sound when your ipad is in sleep mode and someone is messaging you.  It seems to work with the swoosh sounds when you are actively messaging back and forth, but as soon as I close my ipad up and is locked or in sleep mode, I don't know anyone is messaging me until I look at my ipad.  I've tried a few things.. But nothing has worked so far....Please help!

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

To solve some sound problems, just follow these simple steps
    1. Go to Settings
    2. Tap on General
    3. Tap on Reset
    4. Tap on Reset All Settings
What this effectively does is to reset some of your Settings to factory default. It’s not a complete removal of settings. It removes all of your preferences for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do No Disturb, Notifications, General, Sounds, Brightness & Wallpaper and Privacy. It doesn’t affect your data. All of your email accounts will remain intact, as well as any SMS text or iMessages.

  • IPad won't go into Sleep mode

After using an App made specifically for the iPad and then try to turn off/put my iPad to sleep, it does not react at all. If I then start an App which was designed for the iPhone, then pressing the button on the top of the iPad leads directly to the iPad switching to sleep mode.
This does not happen with all iPad apps. Any ideas? I've tried it with several different iPad apps and it happens with some of them. All iPhone apps have no negative effects on the iPad sleep mode, which tells me that there has to be a problem with some of the iPad apps.
    thanks for the help.

Try a cold reboot. Same as turning off the iPad except keep holding down both buttons (side on/off and top screen Home button) until you see the Apple logo (it will go through the "Slide to power off" thing first- keep holding down). It should reboot automatically when you let go after the logo appears. This can take some time so be patient.

  • Fix for iPad going to sleep?

We're using our iPad in conjunction with AppleTV and we're having an issue with the iPad going into sleep mode in the middle of presentations. I see where the autolock can be set for as high as 15 minutes, wasn't there once a "never" option? We are running 5.0.1 at this time. If not in settings, is there an app or any other fix that anyone knows about that will give me a "never" type option for the device not to go into sleep mode? Thanks.

Be thankful they at least let you have the 15 minute timeout!  My past employer not only enforced the long passcode format, but they only allowed the 1 minute timeout feature - and there was no chance of getting any of their security settings changed (IT was very strict about that).
Also, for those deleting the account, changing things, and re-installing the account - odds are it will revert sometime, as the server is often setup to periodically push out the security certificate and overright the old one.

  • T440 - solid state drives and sleep mode, shutting down, etc.

First time with a solid state drive.  With my T61, i tend not to actually shut it down unless i really need to.  I just leave it on, close it, and let it go into sleep mode - which i can tell its in because of the moon icon/light.  if i just need to move it around the house, i also only put it in sleep mode.  If I take it somewhere of course I shut it down first.  But that's always a pain, I tend to have multiple browser windows open with many, many tabs.  I just hate having to book mark it all (even using bookmark all tabs) then opening them all up again.
    So, I'm wondering
    1) there doesn't seem to be any light to indicate that its in sleep mode - but maybe it doesn't exist in the same way with a SSD? I was always under the impression that the point of that was to make sure the moving parts of the drive had stopped before you moved the laptop.
    2) is it still ok for me to just leave it on most of the time like I do with my T61?
    3) Can I get away with not shutting it down when I take it someplace?  Other than the battery running down - why would that be a problem since it doesn't have a spinning hard drive?
    4) Windows 8, ok this is really a different topic, but I'm here already.  When you shut it down, if for example, you have a bunch of browser windows and tabs open and maybe a couple of word docs - when its started back up, will it automatically open all that?  Or do i have to re-open all the windows, find the word files, etc.?
    5) Anything else I should know about a SSD or windows 8 that is significantly different from what i've had with my T61?  (other than the logo being upside down on the top cover)

    Hi again,
    1. The red dot over the i in ThinkPad will pulse slowly when your machine is in sleep mode.
    2. Yes, absolutely. I use sleep instead of shut down almost exclusively on all machines I use
    on a daily basis.
    3. Same as before, you don't have to worry about doing anything different. The machine won't
run out of battery during sleep mode for days.
    4. It doesn't matter wether you run Windows 7 or 8, you use your browser settings to set it to
open the tabs where you left off.
In Internet Explorer -> Internet Options -> General Tab -> Startup -> Start with tabs from the last session.
In Chrome -> Settings -> On Start Up - Continue where you left off.
Same option is available for Firefox too.
But if you shut your machine down, your programs won't start up automatically with the files you had open
before shutdown, but I'm sure you meant to say sleep, right? When you resume from sleep, everything you
had open will be right there.
    5. No, not really. It's just a new generation of a ThinkPad workhorse with a new version of Windows, you
don't have to change any of your daily routines you've gotten used to.
    Cheers,
    Atli Jarl.
