IOS 4 + ibooks + PDF = Crash!

Hi everyone
Last night i upgraded to iOS 4 and downloaded ibook v 1.1
When browsing in safari, I normally read the a weekly newspaper in PDF format (approx 20-30mb) but when the bar appears in safari to offer to open up the PDF in ibooks and i click this option the phone crashes and the apple symbol comes up for maybe 3-4minutes and then back to the home screen. It seems ibooks cannot handle large PDF's
Anyone having the same?
Cheers
Gray

I have been trying this app out over the weekend and am quite pleased. I tried several PDF files, the largest being 17.5MB (from Apple), with one that had given me handling problems in other apps at 11.7MB. Without a doubt these are slow, but iBooks seems faster than those other apps and navigation is better accomplished.
First, GrayUK, what is the source of your newspaper? Perhaps the file size IS too large (I have doubts about that) or there may be something within the file that is causing the app to misbehave, for example DRM or some equivalent, to stop copying. If it is sending the iPhone back to the Apple symbol and not simply the Home screen, that is a problem. Is it possible for you to split up the file (mainly as a test) and try a smaller version? Not knowing the source or the way the file was created, does not allow a definitive answer. I think some versions of Acrobat are able to apply copy protection and this may be the source of your woes. If so, some feedback to Apple might help.
As vangoghsear is having problems with smaller files than I am able to handle, again I wonder about the source. Might I suggest removing iBooks from the iPhone, turning it off, then on, synchronising, and then adding iBooks. I see (when I read down the page) that this was your cure.
Gummer12, as was mentioned by Neil, just drop the file onto the iTunes icon or into the iTunes main page and a new section is created, Books. That handles the synchronisation of the file(s) into iBooks. Perhaps this was not how you did it before?
tk40906, I have not yet found a file that large, but I am sure I will soon. The main reason for such big files is the graphics included. My experience with the other readers so far, including some of the files that transfer .DOC files and other common file format, is that iBooks was a pleasant surprise for me, although the size of the font in any of them does not match the way these apps handle the ePub format (or .MOBI for Amazon).

  • Ibooks are crashing in ios 8.0.2

I upgraded my ipad 2 to IOS 8.0.2 and now ibooks are crashing every 5 minutes. Since it was incorporated into operating system I can not uninstall, reinstall ibooks. What do I do?

A better solution. This worked for me and several others, from a post from MrsMike921 in the following thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/26725105#26725105
go to your settings, and first go to Safari and delete your history by scrolling down to "clear history and website data". Then go to the advanced settings and select ""website data". It should show 0 bytes. If not, clear again.
next go to iTunes and App Store in settings, and touch your Apple ID, the select sign out.
AFter you you sign out of your ID, restart your iPad by holding down the power button and home key simultaneously until you see the apple logo after the restart.
when you are powered up, go to iBooks. You should get a message that you need to sign in to sync up your books. Sign in, and that should do it.

  • Can't transfer iBooks pdfs from first gen iPad to new MacBook Pro

I have a bunch of important pdf files on a first gen iPad (iOS 5.1.1) that I want to transfer to iBooks in a 13" MacBook Retina.
In iTunes, choosing Devices >Transfer Purchases from My iPad isn't moving them over. I've been able to transfer all the non iBooks pdfs from GoodReader, etc. In iTunes, I can see them in the Books section of "On This iPad" but can't do anything but view info.
In iBooks, choosing File >Move Books from iTunes isn't doing it either.
Syncing warns me that it's going to delete the iPad files.
I'd rather not pay for 3rd party software if I can avoid it.
    Thanks.

No they're not in the iTunes library. Purchased titles transferred and a few other things but a bunch of DRM-free pdfs and DRM-free EPUBS won't Budge.
"Or you don't see them with the iPad connected to the Mac, with iTunes running, the iPad selected under devices and then look in the books tab of iTunes on the right?"...
No. However, if I go a couple tabs further to the right, to "On This iPad" and select Books in the left column, they're all listed. I just can't do anything but view their info or rate them.

  • DRM-protected PDF crashes Safari on iPad

DRM-protected PDF crashes Safari on iPad (iOS 5.1/9B176). After restart the document is blank. When choose Acrobat from "Open it..." list it says "The document is empty". Is there a workaround?
It looks like Safari PDF preview software failes to handle DRM protected PDF (by Adobe LiveCycle ES). I am not sure but this was working before.
    Thanks.

    Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > Safari then tap to delete history, cookies, and data then try Safari.

  • IBA -ibooks file crashes my iBooks App

I have an Ipad 2 running IOS 7.0.2 I just created an .ibook using Ibooks Author, the file is 20.5 mb if I try to open in ibooks on my IPad2 the app crashes.
I had the same thing happen before I exported to .ibooks as I tried to preview entire book and ibooks crashed doing that too.
Just published the ibook, as mentioned its 20.5mb
added to library in Itunes synced with ipad, book displays on Ibooks shelf. If I try to open it and iBooks crashes.
All other e pubs open fine. This is a book for a client of mine, I cannot tell him that here is your book but it crashes the Ibooks app when you open it.
There are NO IMAGES just 100+ pages of text.
Anybody? As I do a search for this topic and I see tons of questions but no answers.
    I'm  running IOS 7.0.2 on my IPad2
    Any help?

OK I tried to open two books I had done last year using IBA, both crashes the program as well.
    Now what?
What do you mean? They worked before but not now? Are they store versions? Do you think it's an iOS/iBooks issue?
If iBooks is crashing regardless, check free space on that device, reinstall iBooks & sync fresh copies of your stuff - still no joy, try another device -- else, contact Apple.

  • Ibooks keeps crashing on my ipad 3 running ios7

Hi, i have my ipad 3 running ios 7.01 and ibooks keeps crashing. I have sheet music i need to read when I perform ...today!! Can anyone help!!
    Many thanks!!

First, perform a Reset on the iPad (different from just restarting).
Hold down on both the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears. When you see the Apple logo on the black screen, let go of the buttons.
After the reset, go to "Settings" then "iBooks". Go to "online content" and turn it on.  Try downloading from iBooks again.
    Hope this answers your question!

  • Ibook keeps crashing on my Ipad2

    Hello,
since the last update my ibooks application crashed after some time.
Yesterday I was able to read 10 pages of a PDF, then it crashed. And since then, I'm not able to open the apps, it crashed in the moment.
I've tried to restart my Ipad, uninstall/reinstall the apps but the problem is still there.
This is not the first time that it happens and this is not linked to a specific PDF or ebooks.
Do you know what I can do?
    Regards

    Kieran,
The usual problem when people can't start up from the OS X disc is that they don't hold down the "c" key at the correct boot time. The kernel panics that effect your installed system won't effect the system on the CD.
As soon as you hear the startup chime, press and hold the "c" key until you are sure that you're booting from CD.

  • Private, enterprise deployment + updating of iBooks, pdf's ... via app, or Profile Manager

    Hello,
We wrote our own iBooks and PDF's for an internal, enterprise deployment.  We need to distribute them to iPad users and then manage them (updates, etc.).  Due to the content, there is no need and little desire to make them publically accessible (post on a webpage, use Drobox, Box, etc.).  We could put them on smartcard or password controlled site.  They are quite large so emailing them is a pain.  In these later cases, it then requires the user to manually download the file, then when an update comes along, delete the old and download the new  (a big pain).  It would be best to do this automatically at night.
We're using MacOS Server Profile Manager for our MDM, which can push self-created apps & webclips but not iBooks and pdfs. It would be great if PM could add/delete/update iBooks & PDFs iOS iBooks app ...  like it can with apps & webclips.
Until then, what's the solution to manage senstive iBooks & PDFs?
Create one (or more) apps the we self-publish & distribute that contains the iBooks and PDF files?   Then update the very large app?
    Thanks,
    K

What about using a WebDav? Download a 3rd party WebDav APP and go to the following URL on your server:
    https://subdoamin.yourdomain.com/webdav/
You do have to enable the share for WebDav to do this in server app but it works great. We use it for iWork and pdf documents.
    Thanks,

Please help me out as this is very irritating. This has been happening for the last 20-30 minutes. It had roughly half battery left.

    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer

  • IOS 7 Mail keeps crashing when I try to open a new message. How do I stop it from crashing?

In the last 24 hours after switching to iOS 7, Mail has crashed on me 3 or 4 times when tapping on the mail icon in the tray. How do I stop this from happening. I have an iPad 2 16GB.

All the suggestions posted were valid ideas, but they didn't help in the end.  I finally had to restore the iPad.  First, I tried clearing up space, and that didn't work, then I deleted all my e-mail acounts and that didn't work.  So, in preparation, I deleted all e-mail accounts, then I turned off photo syncing from iTunes (from my iPhoto account where I had about 10 GB of photos synced), then I backed up this configuration to my iMac via iTunes.  Then I followed procedures in this kb article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137 except I restored from the backup when asked.  I manually re-entered all my e-mail accounts (I have a lot) and Mail was working perfectly now.  Then I re-synced a limited subset of the photos I had synced before, and all is fine.  I think the only problem I really had was a corrupted iOS Mail app, and luckily I was able to solve the issue with a only factory reset and restore from backup!

  • CS3:  Export PDF crash...located the source, now what?

InDesign CS3 keeps crashing on page 86 or 87 of a file I'm trying to Export to PDF.  I know this from watching the progress bar move across the screen, everything is fine until the status box shows page 86/87, then poof, InDesign disappears and requests to send an error report.  I was under the impression this was being caused by the Export PDF settings.  With printer's marks enabled, the Export PDF crash occurs on page 86.  Turn printer's marks off and the crash happens on page 87.  So I tried all kinds of things with Export PDF settings but came up empty.
Then I messed around with pages 86 and 87.  Removed text frames from page 86 and tried various combinations with Export PDF.  Did the same thing on page 87, and then combinations of 86 and 87 at the same time.  No good...keeps crashing.  I removed ALL content from pages 86 and 87 and the Export PDF still crashes, even with blank pages.
I finally got a clue when moving text frames to other pages.  Both pages have 4 text frames each.  When I moved the top text frame on page 87 to a different page -- in this case I moved it to page 98 -- the Export PDF crashed on page 96.  Not page 98 where it was located, but page 96. Weird, but it gave me a clue.
    Long story short:
Export PDF causes InDesign to crash on page 86 or 87 unless the uppermost text frame on page 87 is moved to a non-printing layer. The text frame can remain on page 87 or be on the pasteboard; either way, it must be non-printing to prevent a crash in Export PDF mode.
Any suggestions?  I've already searched the text frame and nothing out of the ordinary catches my eye.  The text frame is necessary for a book project.  I can't consolidate it with another frame.
    Thanks in advance!

My memory is not so great after all...
The bug was in CS4 and it was fixed in 6.0.4. I remembered the rest correctly...

  • IBooks Author crashes every two minutes. What's going on?

iBooks author crashes literally every few minutes, and the error message reads "iBooks author failed while using the iBooks Author plug-in. Click here to re-open".
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app itself. I'm running the latest release of Mavericks.

iBooks Author was updated to 2.1.2 today... download and update to see if the bug fixes solve your problem, if not report back here please.

My iBooks Author quits before I can select "Provide iBooks Author Feedback", so I submitted a support ticket. The first book I created went just fine in November. The second book was fine until the final preview and it crashed. I moved the file to an iMac Desktop and worked from there. But that is not always convenient. What's up with the crashing?
