IOS 4 - Podcast playback failure

Just upgraded to iOS4 and the iPod app is buggy as h*ll. I found the topic suggesting to resync with iTunes and so I did (on my iMac). One benefit of this was that at least it showed me my podcasts again on my iPhone (which had magically disappeared). It seems to have stopped crashing the iPod app as well.
But playback is still incredibly buggy. When I start playback, it does not show the length of the podcast on the timeline (it just shows 0:00). At the same time, I'm not able to move the slider across the timeline. This holds true for at least two different podcasts downloaded from iTunes.
Any suggestions other than hoping that Apple will quickly release a patch?

The podcast playback issue seems to be related to the last release of IOS4. Prior to IOS4's release I didn't have any issue of playback with (audio) podcasts directly downloading onto my iPhone 3GS. However, I have discovered a work around for iPhone users, which may or may not work with the iPod touch since I haven't tested it.
The problem I discovered is that audio podcasts downloaded to the iPhone directly (not synced with iTunes on your computer) will download fine, however, when attempting to access the downloaded podcasts within the iPod app function of the iPhone it will immediately crash it. I found a solution that if you access the podcast from within the iTunes app section of your iPhone they will stream and play just fine. Hit the iTunes button on your iPhone, select the search function at the bottom, type in the podcast name you are looking for. Select it and hit the Download button. Once it finishes downloading you can then go back into the iTunes search function and look up the podcast again (it should still be listed in your search field) you will then see that the podcast you have downloaded is available to play. Click on it and it will then play without problems.
It's strange though that I'm unable to play the podcast through the iPod application on the iPhone. Navigating to the iPod application, selecting "More" at the bottom, selecting "Podcasts," shows the downloaded audio episodes. If you attempt to access the audio podcast from this interface it immediately crashes and takes you back to the iPhone desktop.
This definitely is a coding bug in the new IOS4 and needs to be addressed by Apple in it's next patch.

  • IOS 7 podcasts playback

I just upgraded iOS 7 and I'm having trouble with podcasts. I am getting playback errors on most of them. Coincidentally I am also having trouble with audiobooks. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

This is pretty much what is known about iOS 7 at this time: http://www.apple.com/ios/ios7/
However, there is no reason to beleive that podcasts would not work on your phone when you upgrade this fall.

  • IPad/iPod podcast playback behavior iOS 4.2.1

OK, kids, I've updated my iPad to iOS 4.2.1. I'm getting a new behavior in the iPod/videos function. I have a video podcast with about 20 unwatched episodes. Until I did the upgrade, I would play an episode, it would end and would return to the menu screen. I liked this behavior, but now, under iOS 4.2.1, when the podcast episode ends, it proceeds right into the next one.
I get it, some people might like it the way it is now, and that's fine. My deal is, that's obviously a behavior that's controlled via software. That parameter needs to be accessible to users, and it's not.
First question: is there a secret handshake that will allow me to control this aspect of podcast playback? If not, what would be the process of engaging the iPod software folks to try to create something where such parameters can be made accessible?
This is really a larger issue. There have been one or more playback or menu display behaviors that have changed from one generation of iPod to the next all the way through the line. It gets a little frustrating after figuring out how a particular iPod handles something, only to move on to the next new iPod, or iPod app on an iPhone or iPad, and find out this new piece handles a familiar function in a completely different way.
What's the next step? Thanks for any replies.

The issue I am seeing is that the podcast/tv show/movie actually starts over rather than going back to the menu. (it doesn't move to the next episode as you report). My husband's iPhone running 4.1 has the old (better) behavior. My iPad and my 2g iPod Touch running iOS4.2.1 both do the "finish the video and immediately restart it at the beginning" behavior, which is quite annoying.
I generally will watch a video at bedtime and rely on the iPad to go to sleep after the movie finishes, but now, I have to remember to set the Clock > Sleep Timer for the correct 'movie time' so that the iPad switches off once the movie has finished.
I'm hoping this is a bug and gets fixed. I can't imagine why anyone would want this feature as the default.

  • ITunes Podcast Playback Bookmark

My podcast playback locations are currently being bookmarked when switching between my iOS devices (iPad and iPhone), though not between my laptop's iTunes and my iOS devices.
Are there any troubleshooting steps I can work through in order to figure this out?

I added a topic in the "Producing Podcasts" discussions sections.

After advice from Roger Wilmut, I contacted iTunes support: http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ Then clicked on 'Other iTunes Store Features' in the list and then on 'Podcasts'."
This is the response i got back from iTunes support:
    "Hello Richard,
Good Evening! Thanks so much for taking the time to contact me here at iTunes Store support. My name is Breanne and I will be more than happy to help you out today.
I understand that you are concerned that the previews for video podcasts are played in 4:3 format and when you download them they show in 16:9 format.
I am sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. Please be assured that we are always looking for ways to improve your experience with the iTunes Store which is why we have a form you can fill out to submit your ideas and opinions.
We are always willing to learn more about what our valued customers, such as yourself, would like to see from us:

As you can see i didn't get an answer to the question, but i went to the feedback link and submitted my thoughts.
I am going to try to get more from the iTunes support.

  • Audio vs. video podcast playback

At the end of watching a video podcast I am returned to the episode menu of the podcast I just watched. At the end of listening to an audio podcast I am returned to the main (iPod) menu.
Is there any way to make audio podcast playback act like video podcast playback (meaning return me to the episode menu instead of the main menu)?

  • When was podcast playback sync added in iOS?

I'm noticing that when I play back a podcast that I've downloaded from iTunes on my iPhone and then go to my iPad, that it continues playing from where I left off.  I can actually switch back and forth between my iPad and iPhone and the playback position of the podcast will stay in sync between the two.   I'm assuming it's using iCloud to do that, but from I've read elsewhere it didn't use to do so.  In fact I can't find any thing about the music app doing so when doing searches.
I'm running iOS 5.1.1 on both devices.  I also have an iTunes Match subscription, but I have it disabled on both my iPad and iPhone so I don't think it's using match.  Maybe it's using the home sharing feature?
Does anyone know when this feature was added?

Yes, I noticed the same thing as well! And it doesn't seem to be a Home Sharing thing, as it's only happening between my iDevices (I'm guessing we'll need to wait for an iTunes update to see this feature?). However, I've yet to see this mentioned in any of the Apple tech sites, so we might just be missing something 0.o

  • Is there a way to adjust the speed of podcast playback in iOS 5?

In earlier versions of its, I could play podcasts at normal speed, half speeder double speed. As I listen to many podcasts, I enjoyed the ability to listen in the faster mode to save time. Now, after upgrading my iPad to iOS 5, it sounds like all audio podcasts are playing in only a slowed down mode with no control to adjust the speed that was found in earlier versions.  I mean, I even have this control in my first generation iPod touch!
Am I missing something or was something left out of iOS 5?

From every thread that I have read about this - and there have been plenty of them - I have not seen a definitive answer on this. The feature seems to be missing from the iPad as bizarre as that may seem. I know that I cannot find it.

  • ITunes 10 forgets podcast playback position after Mac restart

iTunes 10 forgets playback position of podcasts (but does remember they have been played, but not finished so are not auto-deleted, thankfully) after I just restart my Mac, but not after I quit and relaunch iTunes. Everything was fine in iTunes 9, but once I installed 10 playback positions are totally forgotten after my Mac is turned off. Weird, huh? Why are they not being lost if I just restart the app as well?
No other app's prefs are are affected. Only iTunes 10 is bugged.

Here's a wrinkle: I still have iTunes 9 (9.2 or whatever the latest version is), not iTunes 10, and I had a similar problem today. Could this be related?
Having listened to a bunch of podcasts on my iPhone, I synced with my iBook, which put those same podcasts back on to my iPhone, showing as either unplayed or partially-played, depending on their status the LAST time I synced, which was probably 3 or more days ago. No new podcasts were added.
All the posts on here seem to be from the last week, so I wonder if this problem has to do not with iTunes 10, but with the iOS firmware. I know there was a recent firmware update that I installed on my iPhone 3G.
Well I've not got any iOS devices, just an 80GB iPod classic and second gen-shuffle. Yet this issue arose for me after updating to iTunes 10 shrug

  • IOS 5 podcast bugs

Here is a list of the podcast-related bugs that I have found in iOS 5...  so far...
2x speed changes to 1x after phone calls.
The app still says that it is in 2x mode.
    Minor issue, but still annoying.
Video podcasts not listed in the Videos app.
iTunes U videos are the only thing listed.
Video podcasts are on the device, but are only accessible through search.
The 'Store' button (located in the top-left corner of the screen) goes missing on the podcast list and Videos app.
Audio playback 'hiccups' when going to another app.
This appears to be related to overall CPU demand in the OS.
This issue has been carried over from earlier iOS releases.
    Wi-Fi Syncing issues.
iTunes fails when trying to start the sync process for some reason (likely just an iTunes issue).
Sync times-out frequently (again likely an iTunes issue).
Sync issues persist for no apparent reason even when iTunes seems to be working fine and Wi-Fi signal is excellent.
These issues make Wi-fi sync completely useless...
    Non-bugs, but changes needed...
Put video podcasts back in the Music app (formerly the iPod app)...  It just worked better that way!
Add the ability to manage podcast subcriptions without iTunes...  Any way to get away from iTunes is good!
    Add 2x speed for videos...
Often, I have noticed that the phone sends some data over 3G when starting to play a podcast or video podcast.  Ther is no reason for this...  Stop it!
    And there you have it!

I have indeed called Apple technical support.  When I told the woman who took my call about the audio titles no longer appearing in video, she immediately tried to pin the blame on the video itself.  She asked which video from the iTunes store gave me the problem.  My reply was that I created the video myself - wrong answer!  It must be that the video didn't meet the MP4 specifications, she told me.  And she added that Apple can't support 3rd party videos.  Ooh, good job, Apple technical support person; you just absolved Apple of all responsibility.  Of course, she hated it when I told her that the video displayed audio titles with no problem in earlier IOS versions.  In fact, I have the same video on an ipod touch 3rd generation (running IOS 4.3.5) that displays the audio titles perfectly, I told her.  Her weak comeback was that she has no way of verifying what I'm telling her and that she can only troubleshoot when the videos come from iTunes.  What a moron!!!  I was tempted to tell her that the videos I make using Handbrake are of much better quality than what comes from iTunes, but I didn't want to get off track.  And I have since confirmed that this problem affects Apple videos too from a post on another website.  Maybe they have some good technical support people at Apple; but for the few times I called them on this and other issues, the people I spoke to were robotic in their responses and didn't seem to be in communication with the software designers who created the problems in the 1st place.
As for joining the Apple IOS Developer Program, I'm not sure I would feel comfortable with it since I'm not an IOS developer.  I'm also irritated that a person would have more clout in reporting bugs as an IOS Developer than as a regular user.  Since you're already part of this program, kevpan815, why don't you tell Apple how they're screwing up IOS with their updates and then report back here.  I would be curious to know how they would respond.

  • IOS 6 podcast app problems

Having problems with the podcast app not showing up podcasts.  If I slide the subscription button on it shows the newest one up in the list but after I click download it does nothing.  I upgraded to iOS 6 on release with the iPad I use for my video podcasts I watch.  I can download them on my iPhone 4 through iTunes with no problem. Any suggestions on what's wrong or how to fix it?
Ps. Using same Internet connection with the same Internet settings if that helps.

I am having similar issues. Several podcasts work fine, no problems. For others, I get persistent problems.
A few I can't download or stream at all. Some I can stream fine, but when I try to download, it stalls at "Preparing to download..." forever. Sometimes this eventually fails with a notice that the podcast couldn't be downloaded, other times, it just stays that way indefinitely. A few times by restarting the phone (not just the app, the whole phone), a podcast episode that was stalled before will start downloading. Its inconsistent and frustrating.  None of these issues seem to occur in iTunes on the Mac, also with the same internet connection.

  • Podcast playback constantly hiccups, sputters, and skips in 3.1.2

I was ecstatic about the release of os 3.1.2, since it fixed all the horrible crashing/coma problems I had with 3.0. However, the one respect in which it represented backward progress was in audio playback- specifically of podcasts. (Maybe all playback... most of what I listen to is podcasts, so this might be limited to long audio files?)
If I'm listening to a audio track and go to do something else- wake the phone from sleep, launch mail, launch Safari, or especially something processor-intensive like tweetdeck, the audio playback immediately starts to hiccup, stutter, repeat parts of words, skip sections, and sometimes just gets stuck looping a little portion like a broken record until the new app has fully launched and done whatever it needed to do. This is striking, because audio playback used to be completely rock solid in previous versions of the OS. The problem isn't limited to a particular podcast, so I'm not sure what else to try.
Is anyone else having this problem????

Thanks for the link- sounds like maybe the same problem (somehow didn't find that thread with a search!) I don't have NetBarrier or anything like that installed, so it can't be that. I did notice that it got a little better when I deleted some things from the iPod so that the amount of available space was higher-- but that could be a coincidence, I haven't tried it out enough to know yet. It was certainly never a problem before to have most of your free space filled with music.

  • Ios7 podcast playback speeds not working in Nissan Leaf

In ios6, I was able to control my iphone 4 through the stock radio (via usb sync cable) and playback podcasts at 1.5x or 2x speed. after upgradeding to ios7, I can no longer playback podcasts at higher speeds when I use the radio to navigate to a podcast. If I navigate directly on the iphone, the iphone will playback at higher speed, but then the radio console freezes and I am unable to navigate to other podcasts, or skip or fast forward using the console.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    G

I'm having a similar issue, it seems to be related to the fact that the podcasts are no longer running from the music app - but I suspect that the Nissan interface is accessing the podcasts through the music app's API. I used to listen to my podcasts in 2x speed, and now when I play the podcasts through the usb sync cable in my Nissan (Rogue in my case) it is still playing in 2x speed but I have no way to change it. If I navigate to the podcast app on the phone, I'm able to have the controls (on my phone) but if I navigate to it via the Nissan interface it's stuck on 2x. Would sure like to know how to control the speed chosen by the Nissan playback. I absolutely hate that they split the podcasts out of the music app...

  • Podcast playback freezes/pauses every few minutes

When I watch video podcasts on my computer, every few minutes, playback freezes for about 5 seconds before continuing. During the 'freeze', time is still moving, so I also miss some of the video content.
I can watch the same videos perfectly fine if I play the files directly in another video player.
I just installed the latest itunes version.
    Thanks.

Thanks for that suggestion Sasha, though this is the first time I have ever had that type of jerky playback, so I am hoping it won't occur again for a very long time.
I actually deleted the QT video thinking it was defective until I went back and watched the video in the Canvas plus several other old QT videos which all behaved the same way!
The avatar is to reflect that I am now using Shake . . . . . well, at least floundering on the first chapter of the APTS book . . . . so it may well be changed again in the near future!

  • My appleTV does not remember podcast playback position

Is anyone else finding that video podcasts are not remembering their playback position despite standard movies remembering theirs?  Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem. Video podcasts remember playback position. Audio podcasts do not. Major bug.
