Safari, Mail and Software Update crash upon open after S/U 2006-004
After installing the latest Security Update, Mail, Safari, and Software all crash upon open. nother strange this is that when I do a FIND on Safari, it seems to be in the Root "/" directory. The only way that we can get onto the inter is by using IE. I have also tried to create another user to see if that helps, but Safari just shows up as a "?" in the dock. When I goto applications, and open it there, it still crashes under the new user. Itunes will successfully go to the Music Store.
I reloaded the Mac OS on the mac that was having the problem.

Safari, Mail, and Software Update won't launch
I've tried downloading Safari 3 but my iMac needed to be 10.4+. As a result my Safari, Mail , and Software Update will not launch. When I click either one it will just do 1 or 2 bounces and will not open. No error message pops up.My Firefox browser does work so it can't be a internet problem.
This is what comes up on Console when I try to open Safari.
Safari can't open library: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SyndicationUI.framework/Versions/A/Syndicatio nUI (No such file or directory, errno = 2)
Does anyone know a solution?
Thank you. That's probably because Safari 3.1 introduced a webkit that your Panther applications can't use.
Go to HD/Library/Packages, and delete the package for Safari 3.
Then go to HD/Library/Receipts and delete any reference to Safari 3.
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
com.apple.Safari.plist
Now re-install your previous version of Safari from your install disk (the one that came with your Mac).
Repair permissions and reboot. -
Safari, Software Update Crash immediately after opening
Hi all-
Brand new 2 x 3 GHz Quad Core Mac Pro, 16GB RAM. Trying to install all software needed. Installed Final Cut Suite, it needed to update to a newer version to open up my projects. Used Software Update, and it said there was and update for Safari, so that got downloaded as well. However, now Safari crashes whenever I open it. In fact, software update crashes in the same manner.
I've already repaired permissions, removed preference files, booted from the Leopard disk and repaired the boot drive. I'm coming from the PC world, so I'm at a loss on how to fix this. Is there some way I can "roll back" my version of Safari?
Firefox runs without issue. In fact, that's what I'm working on now.
I am using a Proxy server. Here is the crash report.
ANY help is appreciated.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.Hi Carl,
For the sake of your sanity, do not install the Security Update (it is optional). No problem installing the 10.5.1 Update, as it was released about a month prior to the update, so it is not included in the 10.5.1 update. If you can't access 10.5.1 via Software update, you can access it here.
I would think this proxy crash issue along with a number of others are addressed in the coming 10.5.2 update. You can send the error report to Apple (using Firefox if necessary) via this page. Apple doesn't usually respond to these reports, however, the information can prove useful for Software Engineers working on OS X issues.
One other piece - it's not as simple as "rolling back Safari" as the Security Update affected OS X files. Hence, the need to reinstall 10.5, then upgrade to 10.5.1.

Safari, iTunes and Software update can't connect, firefox can
Hi all!
Since upgrading to Leopard I've been unable to get my macbook to connect using Safari, Software Update or iTunes. I get unknown error messages from iTunes and Software Update and a message that the server can't be found or times out from safari.
Strangely Firefox works perfectly and the other Macs on my network (some 10.4, some 10.5) are fine.
I have tried checking the proxy settings and creating an new user account but both times the problem persists.
The only thing I can think it could be is that someone configured proxy settings through firefox a while ago (pre 10.5) when they used it at their office. could that affect safari etc?
All help gratefully received.
AdamHi. Sorry this will not help, more of an observation. I posted a while back that I was having much the same problem at work when connecting through a proxy. Any Apple app that needs an internet connection did not work, ie Safari, Widgets, Software Update etc. But iChat works, as does Mail although not the RSS function. Firefox on the other hand works fine. I am absolutely certain my setting are correct and when I revert to using my 10.4.10 boot disk that all works fine. I think Apple has some how changed the way user info and password is sent when making a net connection through a proxy and now with 10.5 it does not work.
I also spoke with a mate yesterday he has just upgraded to 10.4.11 which means he now has Safari 3. He now is also experiencing the same problems I have with 10.5 and proxy connections. -
When I click on software update it says
Preferences Error
Could not Load software update
Mail opens but no windows or panes open and you can't quit or anything, I always have to force quit.
I tried a manual update of 10.4.3 to see if that would work but when I tried to open the .pkg it wouldn't.
I also need to get Classic working.Help please.
.pkgs still won't run. I double click and nothing.
I've repaired preferences, started from the Tiger CD and verified/repaired my hard drive through Disk Utility as well as Disk Warrior.
Software Update is still dead, as well as Mail. -
Safari, mail and app store crash after 10.9.5 update
Good morning.
I updated to 10.9.5 a couple weeks ago and now when I open Mail or Safari, they crash. I reopen them and they crash again. Same story every time.
When I open the app store, it just sits there. It tells me that I have 1 update but its frozen and will not allow me to navigate through it.
I have been able to open iPhoto without problems.
Suggestions?
JasonLet me try this again.

Mail, Safari and Software Update won't launch?
My Mail, Safari and Software Update apps don't launch after my last Software Update installed Quicktime 7.0.4 and iTunes 6.0.2. During that update (Jan 12, 06) I got the spinning ball and ended up restarting because nothing was happening...
That's when my apps stopped opening.
This is what Console says when I try:
dyld: /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail truncated or malformed library: /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/WebKit (load command 0 fileoff plus filesize extends past end of the library)
dyld: /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari truncated or malformed library: /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/WebKit (load command 0 fileoff plus filesize extends past end of the library)
dyld: /System/Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app/Contents/MacOS/Software Update truncated or malformed library: /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/WebKit (load command 0 fileoff plus filesize extends past end of the library)
So it appears I have a "malformed library", what should I do?
Thanks.
Powermac g4, 400 mhz Mac OS X (10.3.9) Sonnet processor (1 GHz) and 1.5 GB RAMYes, it looks like something is not right with /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/WebKit. The message "filesize extends past end of the library" sounds like there might be some corruption of the filesystem, although I certainly could be wrong about this. (The filesystem is the operating system's mechanism for determining where files actually start and stop on the harddrive.)
The first thing to try would be to attempt to repair the filesystem. This can be accomplished by booting of your Panther Install CD and using Disk Utility to do a Repair Disk. There are good instructions for that at Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption. See the section on Repair Disk.
If that does not work, I suggest that you try to replace /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/WebKit. If you have another computer with the same operating system, you could connect via target disk mode and copy over the good folder to replace the bad one. Alternatively, you could do an Archive and Install. -
I'm using a macbook pro with version 10.6.8 installed. Whenever I try to install my software updates, it immediately asks me to restart my computer to finish the installation. After doing so and signing back on to my account, nothing has changed and no updates have been installed. It still says the same 8 items need to be installed, and the same process occurs again. Any idea how I can fix this?
You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

Far as your Safari problem do these things until it's resolved:
1: Software Update fully under the Apple menu.
2: Check the status of your plug-ins and update (works for all browsers) also install Firefox and see if your problems continue. You should always have at least two browsers on the machine just in case one fails.

Flash install instructions/problem resolution here if you need it.

3: Install Safari again from Apple's web site

4: Run through this list of fixes, stopping with #16 and report back before doing #17

Dashboard, iChat, Safari & software update crash since upgrading to 10.4.3
After the upgrade was finished, the machine did a restart and it worked fine. The Dash was working fine. The Software update wasn't though. I didn't try iChat till later on so I don't know if it worked initialy. Then I did a reboot and everything went to sh*t.
I found this in the logs:

Powerbook G4 & PowerMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.3)Hello Dave:
You mentioned upgrade - was this an incremental upgrade (e.g. 10.4.2>10.4.3) or an upgrade to 10.4.x? If it was an incremental update, try Balto's reinstall of the incremental upgrade.
An archive and install upgrade will preserve all of your programs, settings, and files and install a fresh copy of OS X. It also creates a rather large "previous system" folder that is kind of like a spare tire. When everything is running well, you can trash it (I keep mine about two weeks).
As an aside, A&I takes about an hour or so. I prefer it to other upgrade methods.

Safari & Software Update crash after installing latest Security Update
I recently loaded Security Update 2008-007 and now Safari crashes on trying to open. I've also found Software Update crashes. Trying to reload Safari and the downlaoad crashes. I'm running 10.5.5 on my G4 12" Powerbook. Any suggestions, before I permanently turn to Firefox? Which of course won't help with Security update
I found that reinstalling the system and not opting to install the security update stop the crashing let's hope the next security update doesn't do the same thing

iOS 5.1.1 Software Update - just tried to update and it didn't work! Got to the final stages and was presented with error 1602! My screen now has the frozen image of the itunes logo and usb thing. Happened once before - funnily enough when doing an update back in November - I had to visit an Apple store to have the phone restored. Would appreciate any advice as I would like to avoid another trip to the apple store.
found the real problem.
In my laptop where it couldn't detect the iphone and ipad, this folder is missing:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
The ipad was wrongly using a microsoft driver.
I found the correct drivers in:
C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbaapl64.inf_amd64_neutral_c111a aecb61e9a2b
Copy the contents to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
After that, I had to update the driver for Ipad in device manager.
Ipad was found under: "Removable Devices", as a storage device.
Once that is fixed, itunes can detect ipad, and I can restore it.
Apple should really look into ensuring that folder doesn't go missing during itunes update process. -
what do i do after downloading iOS 3.1 software and "There was a problem downloading iOS 3.1.1 software update for ipod touch. an unknown error occurred (8288). Please check that the connection to the network is active and try again." comes up?
Hello, I hope by now you have resolved the upgrade issue, but if not, here is what I ended up having to do:
“SUCCESS!!! I took my iPod to a friend who is a computer programmer/genius. He turned off his wireless, hooked the ethernet cable directly into his computer, and the download went through without a hitch. YAY!”
Here is my original post explaining what I had already tried:
“Hi all,
I got an iPod Touch 1st gen for my youngest son for Christmas as a starter. It has the 2.1.2 ios on it, but after I paid for the upgrade to 3.1.1, I keep getting an error message (8288) saying there was a problem with the network connection. I have called customer service, and they suggested I try on a different computer, and if that didn't work, try connecting to a different network, and then trying the update. None of this has worked. It seems that tech support is clueless with this issue.
I have installed and unistalled iTunes 10.5, 10.3, 10.4, and now I am back with 10.5. I have tried looking up the issue from several search engines but no one seems to have a universal solution and I have tried several.
I really want to have this thing updated for himw hwne he opens it, but I am starting to worry that my purchase was a bust. I know this is the oldest version, but I don't want to buy a newer, more expensive iPod and him still not be mature enough to really take care of it. As I said, this one is a starter.
Can anyone help? Please?!
Thank you!!!
P.S. We have a PC, with Windows XP Home.”
Now, there seem to be a lot of different ways to solve the 8288 error, none of which are universal. Best of luck getting yours upgraded!

P.S. The post by Sparkhi is a link to his blog going into a long story about how he wanted Apple to pay him for “solving” the issue….the one that apparently has been solved by multiple solutions. I’m not trying to bash, it just bothers me that he put up this whole story and finally, at the very end of his blog post, posts his solution. -

Unable to connect to network with Safari and Software Update
A user I support has encountered a problem with networking. He is unable to connect to the network with Safari and Software Update, but IS able to connect and surf with Foxfire and some other programs. Another unusual symptom is that he actually can connect to one web site (which is in his Bookmarks Bar) with Safari, but can't connect to anything else. He's also unable to navigate off of that one site he connects to. When he runs Network Diagnostics, he gets all green lights (no problems). He has fixed permissions, deleted Safari Cache and .plist, rebooted - not fixed yet. He's using 10.4.8 on a PowerPC G4. Any ideas appreciated (this is the wierdest I've seen in a while!).
Here's what he did. After reading your post, he created another location in his network preferences, entering EXACTLY the same info that was in his old location (he even used the old DNS addresses), except using a new location name. Then he chose the new location and "everything worked". It's one of life's great mysteries. Thanks for your help - it is appreciated.
