IOS 5.1.1 requires restore
Not happy about this.
Wife was on ipad 3 playing around and clicked the update for 5.1.1, she said it never prompted to backup and now the ipad is requiring a restore. The big deal is the large number of photos & albums on it. Albums and RAW files are not backed up via Photo Stream, far as I know game save data isn't either. So to me requiring a restore and not indicating that requirement (or possibility of it) is flawed. At least when Windows fails to update I can F8 and fix it.
My question: is there any software out there to pull files off this brick? Else does some of this 'jailbreaking' software provide a means to get at the files without wiping it?
P.S. I don't support jailbreaking nor do I want to go that route really, but if its an option absolutely. I'm a developer so give me a technical answer.
It shouldn't require a restore. In fact I just updated my iPad, iPhone, iPod touch OTA and it worked out just fine. So something must have gone really wrong that i've never heard about. Enough with that being said, you could try iExplorer. It's a free Mac application and it works wonerfully. What it does is it allows you to access the files of the iOS device (without jailbreaking, Woo Hoo!), but you probably don't want to mess in there unless you know what you are doing (which I suppose you would know since you are a developer). this ones last cause I think you may have tried it already..

I lost everything cause I wanted to update my phone
here is what happened with me exactly :-
I plugged in my phone into the charger & connected my phone to a wireless connection to start the operation of updating it, I immediately noticed that I dont have the required space to proceed the download so i had to delete data manually, & meanwhile i was doing so my phone became slow and it got stuck then it went off after that it came on again but it was on the recovery mode ??

I want to upgrade to version ios 7, but that requires at least 5 gb of available space and my device says I've only got 1.2 gb available. My music, photos and apps add up to about 6.5 gb, so I presume the operating system and other pre installed software consumes the balance of the +/- 13gb of space the device says it has.
I bought 25 gb of iCloud storage and backed everything I have on the device onto iCloud, hoping I can later retrieve anything I need to delete to make space for the iOS v 7 upgrade. Am I correct about this? Is this how to clear space for the upgrade it hour losing any valuable pictures or music of favorite pps?Upgrading the iPad thru iTunes and a computer will reduce the space requirements on the iPad, since the download of the iOS upgrade installer and its preprocessing will occur in the computer. Also, the backup stored on the computer will be a mirror copy of all the docs and settings of the iPad, which is not exactly true of an iCloud backup. Plus restoring from it will be much quicker since no network access will be needed to access the data.
As for where the storage space went, we had a similar issue a few days back with a colleague who wanted to upgrade his 16GB iPad3 to iOS 7.1 from iOS 5.1.1. After we removed all visible extra apps and documents, still could not get more than 3-4GB freed. But he recalled having stored two long videos that did not show up in the Videos app. Finally found them for some strange reason in the Photos app! With both backed up and gone, got almost 8GB back. Everybody happy now. -
Restoring from iOS 6 to iOS 7 - Not All Info Restores
I had to get a new phone. I backed up my iPhone 5 earlier in the morning and was still on one of the iOS 6 version. The new phone has iOS 7. When I restore it, it won't allow me to set up my email, my text messages will not transfer over and it will not let me set up Find My iPhone. I reset the phone and set up as a new phone and it allows me to set up my email accounts. Can you restore from an old iOS 6? My iTunes was also on an old version which the tech at the Apple store told me I had to update before I can restore to the new phone.
The iOS version installed will be the most current version that your device qualifies for. iPad 2 qualifies for iOS 8.1.2 so that's what will be installed...there's no getting around that and there's no intermediate iOS option either.
You may just want to keep the device at it's current iOS version...unless you need newer apps that require iOS 7 or 8. In that case, you have no choice but to update to iOS 8.1.2. -
Got this iphone from my Ghananian friend.He forgot the email and password used to active the 4s iphone currently running on iOS 7.He did a restore using iTunes and now needs to be activated.Any idea?
The Apple ID and Password that was Originally used to Activate the iDevice is required
If you do not have that information you will not be able to use the Device.

The iPod Touch was working perfectly fine. iTunes suggest that I update the iPod Touch to the latest operating software, and I proceeded to do so. Then a message popped up stating that the iPod Touch needs to be fully restored - and that all data will be lost. The iPod Touch now displays the 'plug into iTunes' screen, and is stuck there. There are irreplaceable family momentos on the iPod Touch. How can I recover files from an iPod Touch prior to a required restore? HELP...Your only hope is to contact a data recovery company. When it shows the connect to iTunes screen the iPod is essentially deleted.

My start up disk Macintosh HD is full on my McAir OSX 10.9.4 memory 4GB. I need to clear the disk so that I can update it with the new software IOS 10.9.5 requiring 2.05GB. Need guidance on how to clear space.
For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.

You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal. -

Downgrading of any version of iOS isn't supported by Apple. If you search the web, you'll find instructions that may work, but you're on your own should any problems arise. For many people it goes without problems, but for some it's reportedly bricked their devices.
If you haven't done so already, try restoring your iPhone as a new device, not from a backup, and run just with the included apps for a bit and see how it performs. Cache corruption or incompatible software can cause performance and stability issues. No guarantees, but it's worth a try to at least try to identify what's causing the problems, iOS 6 itself or something you have loaded.

I was attempting to backup my iphone 5 getting ready to update it to ios 7 and i accidentally restored it to the settings of my last phone which was an iphone 4s and it erased all my new pictures and info off my new phone and was wondering if anyone knows how i can get them back and restore it back like i has it? That means you have not a backup before accidentally restore your new iPhone 5.
So you should recover your new pictures and info with a third recovery tool.

I'm helping a friend with a new 4S iPhone. He's converting from an old 3GS. We've gone throughout the activation, update to iOS 5.0.2 and restored. Now I'm surprised to find that the Facetime app is not on his new 4S iPhone. How do we fix this?
I would suggest you read the user guide. There IS no Facetime App for the iPhone.

Symptoms
When restoring an iOS backup to a iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that is not using the latest version of iOS, you may see the following behavior:
You cannot see or select the most recent backup from the list of available backups in iTunes or iCloud.

If your iPhone is frozen you must do a hard reboot,
Press-hold the Home button (big circle below the screen) and the Sleep/Wake button (on top of the iPhone) simultaneously.
Continue holding both buttons until the iPhone shuts off and begins to restart

All you can do is get a newer model iPod. The 2G can only go as high as 4.2.1. Its hardare does not support a higher iOS version
