IOS 5.1.1 update wrecked my phone, can anybody please help?

I plugged in my iPhone 4S into iTunes, and it tells me that there is an update (iOS 5.1.1)
I click update, it downloads the file and away it goes. I left the computer as this happened, it automatically went to install and when I came back there was an error message. Unfortunately, I don't remember what it said, but what has happened is that the USB cable and iTunes symbol shows on my screen whenever I turn it on (telling me to plug it into my PC). However, iTunes doesn't recognise my phone. Neither does my computer, although it plays the USB sound when I insert/eject my iPhone.
I called apple support and they were of no use, I've read several articles that involved uninstalling all apple programs and starting a fresh all to still be without a phone.
I am at my wits end and most definitely need my phone, so I hope that somebody can please help me resolve this issue as soon as possible!
I know that Apple doesn't read these, that was just a way of trying to say that I see on this and other forums that lots of people are having trouble. Yes, I tried the restore and also the turning off firewall/anti-virus. Didn't work.
I finally fixed the problem and learned a lot in the process, especially in talking to some of the guys at the Apple store near where I live. So here are my recommendations to anyone with this problem:
(All this assumes you have a real iPhone/iPad and not a jailbroken one. If you don't have a legit one, forget about fixing it. Every software update is designed to cause problems for jailbroken phones).
First, if you haven't downloaded 5.1.1 yet, and want to avoid the problems, don't do it through iTunes on a Windows machine. Apple pretty much knows that there are a large number of problems that can occur and they try to help you trouble shoot a lot of them. But once your install through iTunes on a Windows machine is corrupted, you might have a lot of trouble getting things to work again. You should download 5.1.1 because of the security upgrades. If you can download it direclty on your iPhone/iPad that should work without a problem. If you can connect to WiFi you should, especially if you don't have an unlimited data plan. If you are on a metered data plan you should never download software updates through your phone connection, only though WiFI or on your iTunes.
By all means try the hard reset approach described above. I did multiple times and it didn't work, but if it can work for you, do it.
Here is another way to do it. If you have another computer available, download iTunes on that computer and connect the device to that computer. Do a hard reset. The other computer's iTunes will recognize the device as just an iphone/iPad. Then wipe the iphone clean and do an install of the updated OS. (This assumes that you have backed up your iPhone recently to your computer or iCloud. If you haven't or don't, you will lose a lot of your data, photos, etc.) Wiping the device and installing the new OS will delete everything on your phone. After this, then connect it back to your first computer, and iTunes should recognize it. Then restore from your backup.
Of course, if you don't want to hassle with any of this just make an appointment at the nearest Apple store and they will fix it for free. They can wipe your phone and then you just restore from a backup.
What the original poster described is what happens when his phone enters "recovery mode." This often becomes very hard to recover from on the same computer which caused the faulty install.
Also, if you do try to uninstall and reinstall itunes, make sure you do it exactly in the order described in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 If you don't it won't work.

If you are trying to update your iPod, then all you need to do is have the latest version of iTunes installed and plug it in. It will check of any updates if they are available and update your iPod. I have also provided the User Guide for your model of iPod as well.

There is no tracker application bundled with an iPod (nor iPhone nor iPad). Apple offers an app in the iTunes Store that allows an iOS device on which the "Find My..." service has been set up to be tracked from another iOS device (the app goes on the device doing the tracking). But the service has to have been set up on the device you want to track before it was stolen.

I tried to install nef files from my nikon d750 and it said I needed to install an update for lightroom. it told me to launch creative cloud to do so. when i tried to launch nothing was happening (I didn't realize it was launched in my nav up by the date ). i then went to the website and updated the latest version there. when i started lr it now asks me for a serial number. i have the cloud version and i'm not sure what to do now. i can't find anything in my email (just a verification of paid email) and nothing is in my account info. can someone please help! i'm on a deadline for monday and adobe is closed until then!! ugh..

Install iTunes on your Acer and you can back up the iPhone. Or back it up to iCloud. If you do not back it up you can get it unlocked, but you will lose all of your content.

Even after unlocking I'm not sure it will work on Straight Talk, because last time I checked ST used Verizon as its carrier, and an AT&T iPhone 4 is not compatible with Verizon's network. You can probably use it on Net 10 or T-Mobile once it is unlocked. -

We aren't Apple, just users like you. Have you tried a reset? Hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

How does FIREFOX-TOOLBAR looks like,and where on my page will I see it? I have a lot of toolbars on my page, like, the ZYNGA-toolbar,facemoods, ect..... Before I downloaded the "new version of firefox 4, I had the version 3.16, and had NO trouble at all!
I would imagine it's the MyWay Searchbar which is classified by most anti-malware scanners as adware, or even worse as spyware. I say that because I see "SmileyCentral" in your list of plugins and that's an add-on for that particular toolbar. You can disable that via Tools | Add-ons | Plugins.
There are a number of toolbars which won't work with Firefox 4 anymore due to the enhanced protection mechanisms in the browser.
Mozilla recommends that you only install add-ons from its own security site @ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/?browse=featured Generally speaking, those have all been tested and approved. The exceptions are those currently under review which are marked with a yellow banner to warn users that they haven't passed Mozilla's labs yet. -

To listen to music with a headset or earbuds via bluetooth requires a bluetooth stereo headset.
File transfer via bluetooth is not supported. A friend or relative can purchase music for you via the iTunes music store with an iTunes store gift card or by sending you the music gift via email from iTunes. -
My iPhone keeps telling me I don't have enough space to update my software. But I just bought 15GB of storage, of which 11.7GB is free! So I don't understand. Can anybody please help me? I'm really bad with technology so I don't have a clue.

The storage issue you are having is not related to iCloud. The error is telling you that you do not have enough room on your device itself. You need to go to Settings>General>Usage, and under the Storage section at the top, it lists all of your apps and other things taking up room on your device.
You will have to delete or reduce the size of items on this list in order to free up some room for your update.
Also, you may want to try the update by hooking up your device to iTunes on the computer you sync with. It does not require as much free memory to update via iTunes as it does OTA.

Hi everyone, I need some help big time. I was currently running the IOS 6.0.1 on my iphone 4 and I could sync and transfer music to my phone via my iTunes account. But I updated my phone to the new IOS 6.1 and now I can not transfer music onto my iphone, all it does is tries to sync the songs but it doesn't. I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes back onto my laptop yet it still does not work. Can anyone please help me.

The release of iTunes 11.0.2 and iOS 6.1.2 for my iPhone 4, seems to have sorted everything. I can now sync music, films and photos between my MacBook and my phone.
I was dubious about blindly doing the updates but decided they couldn't really mess up any further functionality so I went for it and it's sorted now.

I bought iPhone 3GS(Used) recently and updated ios 6.1.3 my iPhone is taking blurry Pictures through basic default Cam app.Can anybody please let me know any solution for this?
Basic troubleshooting steps right out of the user guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new. If you've been through ALL the steps and you still have the problem, then you'll need to bring your phone to Apple for evaluation.

After restoring to factory settings/new iPod you will then have to restore from backup
To restore from backup see:

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

Are you aware that if you restore your ipad that you will lose all data from your ipad and very difficult to get it back unless you had previously made a back-up of your data on itunes or in the cloud. and that would be on the computer you set those up on. (There are some independent apps out there that might help restore data but I don't have any experience with them...)
Also, I think if you restore on another computer you're supposed to have administrator rights and have the latest itunes update. And I think if you sync (if restoring is considered syncing with another computer, you'll be locked out of your computer or a new one.)
I don't know if there is a way for you to safely eject your ipad from your mom's laptop and find another way, but please read this
