IOS 5.1 failed to install on iPad 2

I downloaded 5.1 on my iPad 2, and after the download, the iPad rebooted itself and gave me the cryptic error "Unable to Install Update. Software update requires a network connection" with a Settings and Close button. The iPad has internet connection and if I click on Settings it just takes me to the Software Updates page.
On that page, it shows me iOS 5.1 is downloaded already with an Install Now option. If I click that, it gives me the Terms and Conditions, which I Agree to, and it tells me Verifying Update and then says "Unable to Install Update. An error occured installing iOS 5.1". If I reboot the iPad, same cycle again.
Anyone got any ideas?

I was eventually able to download the update to my ancient, slow Mac. Then I was able to upgrade just fine.
Thinking about what I've read here and there, I'm beginning to think the problem has to do with some sort of weird timeout/sync issue between the device and whatever host. The fixes all seem to do with trying old Windows machines, changing wifi networks, changing network settings, etc. I wouldn't be surprised to hear someone else fixing this by switching to 3G.
BTW, what's it mean when I have 1.8 Gig free after the download, but also have 1.8 Gig free after the install? Was there really a download?

  • Developer App failed to install on iPad HD

I have a developer app that installs fine on all iPad 1&2 but not any of my iPad HD.  iTunes gives me an error with "app name" failed to install.  I have updated my view builder to the latest and re built the app.  I'm really confused on what the issue can be.  Can anyone shed some light on this issue as I need to get started on submitting this app to the store.
    Thanks,

Did you add the HD ipad's UDID to the mobileprovision file and rebuild the viewer?

  • Apps fail to install during iPad restore from backup

I made a clean backup of my iPad2/iOS6, rebooted everything, then tried to restore from backup and there's a bunch of apps that failed to install. I've repeated this process 3x; every time it seems to be a different # of failed to install apps (3-80!!). I now have almost a full page of icons/folders with blank install bars under them.
Did anyone find a solution to this?!

Haven't tried setting up as new. I did the restore and then when itunes asked me, I selected the restore from a backup that was created yesterday. I'll try setup as new first and then restore from backup after? It's going to be a real pain if I have to start everything from scratch :(

  • Xcode 4 & iOS SDK package fails to install

I'm trying to install the new version of Xcode and the iOS sdk and something is very wrong. The installer begins attempting to install, and then just as it says it is writing files it fails, telling me I should contact the software designer. This is very un-Apple-like, based on my experience. I can post some info from the install.log file, but the basic error it gives me is that it cannot create the directory
    var/folders/mV/mVihbnJ6GfKcsghcx+3Bk++TI/-Tmp-/Install.2011tzSWDB/receipts
This seems like a pretty specific issue and I'm currently in the process of re-downloading the .dmg
Interestingly when I installed the first individual package the writing files bar went a little farther than before, if I were to install all of the individual packages (really don't want to do that) would Xcode and everything with the iOS sdk work correctly?
    Thanks

I ran into that on the first attempt, but running the installer a second time went through. I am able to use Xcode4, but I do not get to see my iOS app archived versions, which also prevents me from deploying applications to the app store. I currently use Xcode4 for developing, and revert back to Xcode3 for deploying. YMMV.

  • Is iOS 7.0.4 worth installing on iPad Mini WiFi (1st Gen)?

I've heard mixed responses with some people saying it works great and others saying that their batteries were nuked following the update. Has any of the issues been fixed from the initial version? Is it worth taking the plunge or should I wait? I mainly read books on the Kindle app and watch movies. The main reason I bought the iPad Mini in the first place was for the battery life so would appreciate the input. Thanks.

Okay thanks guys, I think I'll go ahead and do it then. Strange so many have reported problems, maybe they messed something up

  • IOS 7.0.6 disaster, new phone/ipad but

    Hi,
Had all the same issues as everyone else with my phone4 and ipad2 bricking so have had to reinstall as new phone/ipads - the backups were corrupt of wont work so that means I lost all the games data for my daughter....thanks apple...did you now test this update before sending it out?  Really hard not to notice my windows phone that i use for work that is simpler and keeps on working....anyway.
Now, with effectively new phones they are actually faster...an interesting point to note.  however, icloud is now all buggy and only loading half of my contacts and no diary.....if you haven't udated this then DONT.  If you have and have some advice that can help me that would be much appreciated.

    Philly:
When there is an iOS update available, iTunes asks if you want to install it. I chose to only download the iOS 7.0.6 update, but not to install it until I had done a backup of everything on my iPad. When that iOS 7.0.6 update failed, I had NO iOS at all, just a bricked iPad.
When my son did a "clean restore" that was the same thing you'd do to wipe an iPad - just install iOS 7.0.6 and install basic iPad apps.  When you turn the iPad on after that, it indicates it wants to be connected to iTunes. At that point, my son yanked the cord so nothing else was installed.  Then, with iOS 7.0.6 already installed, iTunes on my PC didn't say it wanted to update iOS, and allowed me to choose my previous backup to be restored. All was straightforward after that.
Again, there are places on he web where you can download various versions of iOS, along with a PC utility that will do the iOS update. I think these utilities are for when you want to hack your device, so I'm not crazy about this approach.

  • When I updated to iOS 8.1 on my iPad 2 it failed when installing it's in recovery mode and when I go to iTunes to restore it downloads the update to about 900 Mbps then gives me error 9006

    Hi Willy,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The article below provides information about specific update and restore alerts, including the 9006 alert that you saw when attempting to update your iPad 2 to iOS 8.1. Try using the instructions provided to see if the issue is caused by a conflict with the security software on your computer.
Resolve iOS update and restore errors
    Check your security software
Related errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1000, 1611, 9006. Sometimes security software can prevent your device from communicating with either the Apple update server or with your device.
Check your security software and settings to make sure that they aren't preventing a connection to the Apple servers.
    I hope this helps,
    -Jason

  • IOS 6 fails to install

iOS 6 fails to install when:
-Downloading & installing from the iPad itself (using 3 different WIFI connections on fully different ISP's)
    -Downloading & installing from iTunes on 5 different PC's! (2x Windows PC's ; 3x Mac's)
-Using iTunes to perform a Restore FAILS! How ridiculous!!!
By the way this is a BRAND NEW iPad 3 out of the box! Before anyone asks, it was NEVER jailbroken.
I have come to the conclusion to blame Apple, Inc. for a corrupted download. Fix it now, or I will quickly return. Thank you!
    Way to #fail apple!

I am also having this problem with my ipad 3. It's not brand new, but like you said I don't think it has to do with my ipad. The download doesn't even complete. neither to my ipad or even through itunes. I even tried downloading it directly from osx daily and installing it manually (much easier than it sounds) but no go. Said my firmware was not compatible.
    Boo.

  • IPad mini iOS 8 firmware fails

I successfully upgraded by iPhone 5 to iOS 8 and then followed with my iPad mini.
The iPad mini failed on firmware restore (lots of times). I took it to an Apple Store where it also failed.
Just out of warranty so told hardware problem - no luck.
I have tried to go back to iOS 7 manually and that also failed on firmware.
I cannot get at my backup prior to the upgrade as iTunes only recognises my iPad as in recovery mode and want to restore first.
I find it unacceptable that a 15 month old iPad can be rendered useless by an os update and be told 'out of warranty' no luck...
    Any thoughts ?

All is not lost, you can get your iPad working again.  For some reason I had problems updating on my PC since 7.1.2 update, before that it worked great. Now it hangs up with each new update. So the key is manually download the firmware file, I put 3 sites below, worse case Google downloading iPad Firmware iOS8 and pick the right one for your pad.  Then Step 1 make sure you have the latest iTunes, Step 2 take the firmware and change the .zip to .IPSW.
Step 3 Hard reboot the ipad (Power button and Home Button), Step 4 if no SIM (Wi-Fi Only no problem).
Step 5 below is the KEY step, holding down the shift key and clicking on the restore in iTunes will ask you for the firmware file. Point to where you downloaded the file. The firmware should install, the ipad should reboot and then restore from your most recent backup.
If you have a ton of apps (600+) like me, plan on a couple of hours for the final restore to finish.  As I write this my iPad mini is up to 36 Apps of 600+
It works, and the other day while in the Apple store getting my iPhone 6+ I told one of the Genius guys how to do it as his device was messed up and he didn't know about this.  I really wish Apple would figure why this happens and fix it.  It almost seem like after downloading the firmware, it needs to go back to the Apple server for something, hangs and screws up the persons device. Once in that state unless you know to perform the Shift+Restore with downloaded firmware you are hosed.
Good luck and I hope this get you back running

How to Manually Restore iPhone Firmware
Upgraded iTunes to the latest version available and rebooted our computer v11.4
Downloaded the iPhone 4.0.1 firmware directly from Apple manually*** (Rename from .Zip to <IPSW)
Hard rebooted the iPhone (press and hold both home and the power button until an Apple logo appears)
Popped the sim card out of the handset
Connected the iPhone to our computer and when iTunes told us it had detected a device requiring a recovery we shift clicked restore** (held down shift on the keyboard and clicked the restore button) within iTunes*
We browsed to the location where we’d saved the firmware we downloaded in step 2 and left iTunes to do its thing with the iPhone
When the iPhone rebooted having successfully applied the firmware we re-inserted the sim card, waited for the iPhone to tell us it was activated
We ask iTunes to re-apply the most recent backup it had to the device, thus restoring configuration and content.

    Hi EarlT,
If you are having issues updating iOS on your iPhone over the air, you may want to try updating it directly from iTunes. You may find the following article helpful:

We aren't Apple, just users like you. Have you tried a reset? Hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

  • How do I delete an IOS update that was downloaded in iTunes but not yet installed on iPad

I am currently running IOS 5.1.1 on my iPad.  When IOS 6 came out, I connected my iPad to my computer and checked for the update through iTunes 10.7.0.21.  When it found it, I had it only download it and not install it.  I have yet to install IOS 6 and I now see that the iPad shows IOS 6.01 as an update.  But, if I connect the iPad to my computer and fire up iTunes, it says IOS 6 is ready to be installed.
How do I remove IOS 6 from iTunes and have it recheck and find IOS 6.01 without installing the IOS 6 first?  Is it possible.  I tried removing the iPad2,3_6.0_10A403_Restore file from the c://users/USER/AppData/Roaming/Apple Computer/iTunes/iPad Software Updates folder and restart iTunes but it still tells me that IOS 6 is ready to be installed.
I would like to remove IOS 6 from iTunes so that I can download the IOS 6.01 version and go straight to that instead of installing IOS 6 first and then having to download and install IOS 6.01 after.
    Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    James Ward4,
    Thanks for your quick reply.
Although I could install directly to the iPad, I prefer to go through iTunes so I have a copy of the install file just in case of install issues.
As for downloading the newer update to iTunes, could you elaborate on that.  The only way I know how to download the update is to connect the iPad to the computer and fire up iTunes and then have it check for updates.  Problem now is that since IOS 6 is sitting there waiting to be installed, I don't have the option to check for updates, just to install IOS 6.
As for installing IOS 6 first and then installing IOS 6.01, I was hoping to avoid the double install if I could while still going through iTunes.
    Thanks again for your thoughts.

  • After Install IOS 8 and 8.0.2, the Ipad audio was distorted, and the bluetooth connection to audio speaker have wheezing.

After Install IOS 8 and 8.0.2, the Ipad audio was distorted, and the bluetooth connection to audio speaker have wheezing.

I ALSO just updated my brand new iphone 6 to 8.0.2, and I ALSO had my cellular service BRICKED.
All I get on the signal meter is Verizon 1x.  Every so often 3G would popup and you could send a text (no calls though) but it's gone in seconds. So  I can't send texts or make phone calls.
This phone worked immediately before the update and stopped working immediately after the update.
My neighbor has a iphone 5S. He updated to 8.0.2 lat week and had no problems UNTIL just this morning, when his phone stopped working - no cellular voice or data. He downgraded back to ios 8.0 but his cellular service never came back.
Called verizon - was told there were no service outages and then I got transferred to tech team.
Tech team had do all the Apple troubleshooting steps but nothing more. So they said "take it back."
So this BRAND NEW iPhone 6 phone is BRICKED because of iOS 8.0.2.
    Thanks Apple!
