IOS 5 backup to iOS 6?

Hi all
I decided to sell my 4S early to get a good price prior to the 5 being announced. I was one of the lucky ones that got in early so a shiny new phone should be with me next week.
Of course this means I have a backup on my mac from the current version of iOS 5, the new phone will ship with iOS 6 so I am wondering if there will be any way to use that backup to restore my new phone? If not would it be possible to downgrade from retail iOS 6 to iOS 5.x.x so I can use the backup?
I guess some of this will be guesswork as we don't know what iOS 6 full release will allow but any previous experience or advice would be appreciated.
Cheers
Neil

When you get your new phone, you'll be prompted to setup as new or restore from backup. Select the backup from your 4S, then sync your iTunes content to your new phone. That's all you have to do. It will work just fine.

How do I backup voice memos from my iPhone 4 to my MacBook, with iOS 6?
I have synchronised them a hundred times but iTunes just doesn't backup my voice memos. And I haven't seen a playlist called "Voice Memos" on the left sidebar either...

Look for Voice Memos under Genres in iTunes.
With the phone connected, click on its name on the left. Then click on the Music tab on the right. Is "Include voice memos" checked?

  • After iOS 8 upgrade restore from backup not working

    Hi,
yesterday I've upgraded to iOS8. After three tries it worked.
But now I'm not able to restore my iPhone5 from Backup. It starts restoring. But the when it's done I've receive the error message without an error nr.
"itunes could not restore the iphone because an error occurred"
    Thats it
I've rewetted the iphone, tried on another computer to restore the backup, tried a different internet connection. Nothing. Everywhere the same issue. I've also tried to use a half year old backup just for fun. But the same issue.
I've disconnected other USB devices. No chance
Does anybody has a useful idea?
    Thanks.

When trying to do update from iTunes, the backup abort stating that it cannot save to the pc. Normal sync works for apps etc. Only firmware upgrade doesn't work. Manually backup also doesn't work.

Apple is still showing this from what I see on the downloads website. Try this.

  • How do i get my photos out of a backup thats in the cloud onto my IOS 8 I phone 5S

    Hi,
I just upgraded to a I phone 5S from an I Phone 5. I backed up the I Phone 5 and returned it to Verizon and received the 5S.
I didn't think to worry about doing a photo migration because the I Phone 5S came with IOS 7. What happened was I Tunes went ahead and put IOS 8 on the 5S which is ok but now the 900 + photos that were in my photo stream on my I Phone 5 did not transfer to my IOS 8 I Phone 5S.
BUT...I still have the original backup of the I Phone 5 with all of the pictures on it in I Cloud and a copy of it on my Computer.
Is there a way to get those photos back out of that backup and on to the I Phone 5S or just get them onto my computer? There is also a back up of my original I Phone 5 on my computer also. I always back up all of my devices in 2 places.
Can I use my daughters I Pad Mini running IOS 7 to put that I Phone 5 backup onto to get the pictures back & then restore her I Pad Mini back to a backup I would have created before doing the above or is there another way of doing it. My daughters I Pad Mini is only 16GB  and my I Phone 5S is 32GB.
Any Ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I can't replace a lot of those pictures.
    Thanks in advance
    Steve

    Hi..
    Thanks for the reply..
My original I Phone 5 was running IOS 6.12
My I phone 5S currently runs IOS 8..When I upgraded it, it had IOS 7 on it which made the I Photo app compatible with everything below IOS 8...( which the photo app is not compatible with ) so I just connected the I Phone 5S to my computer and thinking the new phone had IOS 7 on it that these was nothing to worry about..I thought all 900 + pictures in the photo stream would transfer but somewhere in the process, I Tunes decides to just go and install IOS 8 which requires that you run a " Photo Migration App" to transfer photos from IOS 7 & below. The problem was is that I didn't want IOS 8 on my new 5S so I thought I wouldn't have to do that part..
Anyway the phone emerged with IOS 8 on it and the only photos that remained were the ones that were actually on the phone..The 900 + I had in the stream didn't transfer because the Photos that works on IOS 7 and below isn't compatible with IOS 8..I guess you have to use the photo migration app that comes with IOS 8 & I phone 6..But I didn't ask to upgrade to IOS 8...It just did it on it's own!
I still have the I Phone 5 Back up that I did just before giving it back to Verizon but if I try to restore the I Phone 5S running IOS 8 those photos in the stream will not go back on the phone because IOS 8 isn't compatible with the I Photos" that ran on IOS 7 and below..
So I have an I Pad mini that runs IOS 7..should I try and erase it...and put that I Phone 5 backup on it and pray the photos that were in the stream come back on it so I can transfer them back to my computer...then erase the I pad mini again and restore it using it's original backup that I have on the computer and the in the cloud?
I know this sounds confusing but I'm at a loss as to what to do..This is what I found ...http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201386
    but it doesn't help me..

  • IOS Photos - Proper Cloud Backup & Managemetn

Am I missing a major point here, or is there a big gap in the iOS, iTunes, iCloud design for photo management the way most people (I would guess) want to do it? Excuse the underlining - brevity isn't my forte so trying to highlight the key points.
Here's what I'd like to be able to do:
Use any/all of my iPad and iPhone devices to take photos and also eat photos from my other cameras via SD card reader
Process the photos on an iPad (view, edit, delete), so I don't have to go to a desktop/laptop to do that
Have the photos stored in a cloud in a way that provides privacy (I still own and control them), ability to view online, ability to point others to them online, ability to manage them online including downloading originals etc etc.  Thus not forcing me to rely on local PCs, PC backups, etc etc for photo safety.
Not have to do anything active in order for my photos to be copied to the cloud (don't want to have to remember to sit down at a computer and waste time curating my photos, after having already done that on my iPad)
(When I say "photos" I mean little videos taken on my iOS devices and cameras also)
My understanding of what iOS and iCloud provide is (right or wrong):
New photos taken on each iPhone/iPad can be shared to other iOS devices on the same iTunes account using PhotoStream and iCloudBut this is just for convenient sharing across devices (not really a backup tool, keeps a rolling window or recent photos, photos aren't available online in iCloud anywhere)
New photos taken on each device are backed up to your iTunes computer (if you choose to) and iCloud (if you choose to)
But you can't see or use those photos on your iTunes computer - they are just part of a device backup
And you can't see those photos online in iCloud - again, they are just part of a backup blob
So this is all just about getting a single device back to how it was previously, including the photos it had on it at the time of the backup
This doesn't copy photos to anywhere central or usable/viewable etc
It also doesn't help create a single central repository of photos either on your computer or in the cloud
You can set iTunes to sync a photos folder with your iOS device
But this is about getting photos from the computer onto the iOS device.  It isn't about actually synchronising photos between the device and that folder
So the photos from your device don't end up on your computer that way (ie no help at all for what I am after)
You can use an PhotoStream app on your computer to be a client of the PhotoStream for your iTunes/iCloud account
Again, this is just a moving windows of most recent photos so doesn't really help much with photo centralisation for backup
Also, if there is a way to scrape the photos off PhotoStream to a central repository on your computer, it would involve sitting down and doing that manually (don't know if this is even possible)
Therefore, as far as I can tell, iOS, iTunes and iCloud do not provide what I am after, at least not out of the box
Independently of iOS, iTunes and iCloud:
I know I can plug my iOS device(s) into a PC and manually copy the photos off each device them using the PC OS (Windows, OS X, whatever) support for media storage devices over USBBut this is a manual process per device, so doesn't happen automagically and therefore doesn't meet my requirements
I know I can use the Dropbox iOS app to sync my photos from each individual device to Dropbox
But this isn't really a central repository of photos in the cloud (think it is done on a device-by-device basis and not sure how well it deals with photos that exist on multiple devices - ie duplication etc)
Also I may not want to use Dropbox (not stoked about their security and privacy commitments)
I am prepared to use a third party service for managing the photos from a PC into the cloud
I already use JungleDisk and Duplicati and am happy to configure these to copy my photos to some independent cloud storage, at least for backup purposes
I can also open an account with Flickr, SmugMug, Picassa etc and get more online photo control that way.
However, to do that I first have to get my photos into one central location, eg on a PC, and then I can then run a process on the PC to auto-sync from that location to the cloud
I don't think about photos on a per-device basis.  I think about them on a single-central-library basis.  I would guess most people do.  And iOS devices are a major source of new photos these days, and I like the idea of pre-managing my library from iOS devices because it is nice and easy and you can do it in front of the TV etc in a different mind-set from opening a laptop or going to a computer. But I need to end up with all those photos as viewable and manageable in one place, and I'd ideally like that one place to be a functional, secure cloud that respects my ownership and privacy. And I'd like to avoid having to schedule my brain to remember to sit down and do active things on a computer/laptop in order to achieve that.  That is very 20th Century and not very "cloud" or "iOS".  At this point I can't seem to work out how to even get all the photos into a single place on a single computer in order to manage my own cloud syncing from there.
    Am I missing anything?

How can I retrieve photos when it says my cloud and iTunes backups are empty or not backed up?
When I tried to update my iPhone 5s to iOS 8.1, I was forced to choose to restore or back up.  Back up wasn't working so I had no choice but to restore.  I lost pictures over the last two years.  When I tried my cloud, there was nothing.  I would get notifications that my cloud was full, but I thought there would at least be some photos in there.  When I tried to restore a back up, it said the last time was two years ago.  I thought when you're on wifi, it automatically backs up.  I've charged my iPhone into my Macbook a bunch of times, so something should have backed up.  Is there any hope for my photos?

Sorry no backup - no pictures.
Yes phone will automatically backup to icloud when on wifi and phone is charge, but your phone storage was full so it stop backing up.

  • Local backup was made without "Encrypt Local Backup" checked before upgrading to iOS 7 but I can't restore because a password is requested to restore it. What do I do?

I hadn't yet upgraded to iOS7 from iOS6 on my iPad so I clicked "Manual Backup" [To this computer] and "Encrypt Local Backup" was not checked.
The backup seemed to complete without error or incident.
I then went through the iOS 7 upgrade and when it was completed the options are "Set up as new device" or "Restore from Backup"
Since I didn't want to wipe all the data on my iPad, I chose restore, and it said connect to iTunes, which I did.
When I click on Restore Backup, it asks for me to choose which backup I want. I choose the last one that I had just done as indicated above (which is the default).
It then gives me a dialog of "Enter the password to unlock your iPad backup. I even tried every password I've used in the last two years. Nothing works. What I don't understand is why it's asking for a password at all?
Is there a way around this? I don't want to loose the data I just backup up.

Sorry there is no way around this.
If you don't know the password you will need to restore as new.
Then you can sync apps/music back via itunes.

  • Problems, trying to use backup from 5.1.1 iOS Gen 3 iPod does not sync music to 4th gen iOS 6 iPod.

My 3rd Gen iPod's headphone connector is basically shot, I've had it for around if not over two years now; sometimes I'm surprised it lasted this long; since I am not one who usually listens to her music without headphones, this is problematic, .
Luckily, a family memberI know had a gen 4 iPod, 32g, same space amount as my old one, lying around that they don't use anymore, thank goodness.
Well, in one case, not so much. First of all, said iPod was locked with a passcode (the passcode was guessed so many times because no one could remember it, it locked permenantly) so I had to completely wipe it. However, it wasn't so bad, though all the information was lost, I could finally use iOS 6 on an iPod.
Well, iOS turned out to be a huge problem, in the way of synicing my old backup. I have about, um, an estimated 3000 songs on my 3rd gen iPod, that of which are not all on one computer, and are from multiple computers (my desktop / laptop); I thought all the songs would transfer over with the rest of my things. I didn't think the iOS made a difference.
Lo and behold, I was dead wrong.
When my iPod was restored to my previous backup, it had no music, only my pictures and apps were added. I'd call 'it annoyed me' an understatement. I waited all that time for the ipod to restore and the backup to finish, only to get my one hundered pictures and two apps.
I have tried to look up how to extract music from my iPod, but to no avail, my computer recognizes it as a camera and I can only access the picture files; the way I read you have to do it online, you must be able to actually get into the iPod's folders, besides the picture folders, and I can't seem to do that; there was an option in earlier versions of iTunes that allowed the iPod device to be displayed as something other than a camera but it no longer seems to be an option in the new iTunes.
All the programs for extracting files, specialized for iPod file extraction, actually, cost money, which at the moment, I don't have much of, this iPod was given to me by a family member, and I'm lucky I even have it. Manual extraction is also something I've tried but failed miserably at, as mentioned earlier.
I'm really not up for re-synching one by one, I want this to be as quick and painless as possible. I have the available GB for my 3000 songs (I checked). Most of my songs are mp3s, and some are m4as. Not everything is bought, and not everything is going to be able to be downloaded through iCloud on account of the fact that there are, uh, over 2GB worth of songs, so does anyone have any solutions to my problem here? I have over 50gb in my desktop library alone, loads more in my laptop library, and I really don't feel like separating all the songs from my previous iPod into a single playlist, if there's a more efficient, free solution out there....
This would not have been a problem in the first place, if the passcode was not there; but blame the previous owner of the 4th gen iPod for that. She typed it so many times it locked her out. And so, I had to reset, but not without an automatic update for iOS 6, which my gen3 can't update to, because it's, well, outdated.

Connect the iPod to your computer and update to iOS 6.1.3. You need iTunes 10.7 or later on the computer.

Updated iPad 1 to IOS 5. When trying to restore my iPad from my backup it gets half way through and the iPad reboots and iTunes says "An error occurred while restoring this iPad (-1)"
I have tried to restore my contacts and company data at least 20 times and every time half way through THE iPAD REBOOTS! When it boots back up it is at the brand new iPad screen.
This makes me angry as I do not use the iPad for fun and games. I use it for business. My company data and records for the last year are gone. ALL of my out standing customer invoices are gone. ALL payments received are gone! ALL Business contacts and emails ARE GONE! All my company, personal email accounts and settings ARE GONE!
What am I supposed to do now? In 6 hours I have to get on the road and conduct business with a empty blank factory out of the box iPad. How am I supposed to know who owes me money or who has paid their bills Apple? All of my meetings and calendar dates are GONE!
Everything was supposed to be backed up and restored after the update!
Question???WHY DID YOU MAKE THIS UPDATE WIPE OUT ALL SETTINGS AND APPS ON THE iPAD??? All the other updates left everything on the iPad intact and ONLY upgraded the IOS,and when it was done everything was still there.
Yes! I have done everything. Rebooted computer, checked for updates, Hard booted iPad, Factory restored iPad to ios 5 twice, tried every usb port I have, unplugged all other usb components.
Everytime half way through "Restoring iPad from backup..." The iPad turns off shows a spinning circle then shows the Apple logo and takes me to the brand new iPad setup screen.
Apple, you have no idea the level of stress you have created today.....

Check the console app to see if there are any error messages. I had one app showing an issue (Pet Hotel) the error was (truncated):

I manually snyc'ed that particular app and then re-ran the restore and am now the proud owner of a working iphone. Not sure it is the same problem or app but looking in the console was the key!

How do I restore info from iCloud onto my new device?

You would have to update your device first, before you can restore your iPad from your backup. What should I do and in which order, to protect my stuff from getting lost with the update?

Backup with iTunes. If iTunes is asking you if you want to backup, say yes to that and it will backup your iPad. Have you ever synced with this computer before?
My boilerplate response for anyone that wants to update the iOS.
What you should do anytime that you update the device is to transfer purchases from the iPad into iTunes - File>Transfer Purchases - and you should backup the iPad as well. When you update the update the device, if something goes wrong, you can restore from the backup.
However, iTunes should ask if you want to backup before you update, but just in case create the backup yourself before you update. The backup contains your app data and settings - along with other items - so make sure you backup first.
If you have any other important files, you may want to transfer them to your computer as well, prior to the update.

From purchasing my iPad 2 which had IOS 4 installed at new I upgraded to IOS 5.1.1 and had no intention of upgrading further missing out on the IOS 6 and the reviews of IOS 7 was a definite no no to me.
That was before my great-granddaughter age 8 was playing her games or colouring  because she has her own page did for some reason open up the settings app and the rest is history, when she said grandad there's something wrong and I went to look my heart sank and tried turning off both iPad and router but there's just no stopping it.
Everybody say's that I am now stuck with IOS 7.0.4 but I am not convinced because I created a backup of my iPad last June 13 in iTunes with IOS 5.1.1 and wondered if I could restore back to that backup.
Also while I am playing around with this new operating system what parts am I not able to run on iPad 2 that is in the full version of IOS 7.
