IOS 5 for 3rd gen

I want to download iOS 5 for my ipod touch 3rd gen but when i click check for update, it says the version is 4.2.1 and wont let me download it. Please help!

You likely have a second gen ipod touch.
Is it an 8GB or 16 GB model?  If so then it is a second gen:

  • Need Help w/ iOS 5 update issues for 3rd gen ipob touch

I have a 32gb 3rd gen ipod touch. Since updating to iOS5 none of my itunes library reinstalled and I couldn't download any podcasts until I deleted about 20 apps. Now if I want to download a podcast it tells me I don't have enough memory unless I delete one I've already listened to. Does the iOS5 really take up that much space?!?!
    How can I fix this?

With your iPod connected to the computer click on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and look at the distribiution of the capacity usage of the iPod in the colored bargraph near the bottom. If the "other "category is very large, like >1 GB that is problably the problem.  To reduce the "other" you need to retore you iPOd.  Sometimes restoring from backup works but other times resoring to factory defaults/new iPod is reqquired.
If the large "other" is not the problem what is using the storage on the iPod?

  • Which sportsarmband for 3rd gen Nano and Nike sportskit

    Hello,
I purchased an iPod Nano 3rd gen with a Nike sportskit. But now I'm not able to find an armband for it. The sportsarmbands I can find are either for the 2nd generation or do not have space for the Nike add-on.
    Any suggestions?
    Regards,
    Jeannette

I've tried 2 different arm bands, both by Belkin. Both are ok. One is called Sport Armband Plus. The other is actually a Belkin product I had from a previous MP3 player. It is just an elastic armband that can be looped through a silicone case (they actually sell one for the nano). The armbands(in general) are ok, but a little difficult to operate.
With my previous MP3 (not an Ipod), I used earphones that had an attached lanyard to wear around your neck, this was actually great. If you wear it under your shirt, it won't bounce around. To work the controls you have to lift your shirt (no big deal), but when you look at it, it is right side up. And the wires don't get in your way. Earphones are by Sennheiser and they have great sound.

  • Mic for 3rd gen touch

does anyone know if there is a mic that can be used on the 3rd gen touch? i know that the head phones have one but i am looking for something a little smaller and discreet. or has anyone used one that works.thanx.

,by any chance have you used either of them any imput would be very well receved thank you again.
Of course, I had tried one of the product the "Thumbtack" the last link that I provided above. It's a very good product with great sound recording when recording notes on the apple voice memos application and on skype calls. I will have to agree with the poster the fiend, about the thumbtack product which is only for limiting recording like a notes memos. I haven't tried it on an more open enviroment to see if it could stack up for a lecture recording microphone. The link for the mini clip mic, it seems a bit better since it provides a built-in speaker on the product.
But as far as recording notes and talking on skype(on the thumbtacks)it the best smallest microphone ever for the iPod touch. I had owned that microphone for two months, and so far on my test it always provide a good sound at a good distance of 6 feet(on a small room). Before I forget, I'm glad that the poster cleared out something that you might want to know prior to your final puchase decision. When those microphone are plugged in on the headphone jack it does disable the speakers from the iPod touch, but some applications let you turn the speakers back on even if you have that mic plugged. But if the mic doesn't fit your need the thumbtack provides a good return policy.
I will give you other mic suggestion( that you might want to take on consideration)on amazon website it sells more professional microphone but what you gain in sound recording you lose it on being a discreet mic. Here is the links for the products.

  • The USB Power Adapter NOT working for 3rd Gen iPod touch!?

    Hi Apple dudes
    Well.. Look here:
    http://store.apple.com/dk/product/MB051ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA4NA&mco=MTEyNjA0NTg
As you can see, the iPod Touch 3rd Gen (I got 32 GB, 3rd Gen) isn't listed as a compitable device.. So now I don't know whether to believe the text or the compitable list.. I really don't wanna wasted an already outrageous price on a simple thing like a adapter - And really, what's up with you NOT being able to charge your iPod from a regular USB power adaptar - NOOOOO, it HAS to be the APPLE-MADE one, cause it's soooo white.. Yes, I'm frustrated, 'cause my first time with an Apple product hasn't just been as your slogan says: "It just works!".. Nop.. Problems, confusing software, and you wouldn't even let me now that my username was already taken when I creted this account. Come on... Took me several "Create now" and Browser-switching to figure it out..
Sorry for this aggresive ending, I hope you can help me with my problem after all
    Regards
    Alexander

    Alex:
    Welcome to the  forums!
I can't help you with things like user names. Apple handles that; I'm an Mac/iPod user, not an Apple employee.
Tech specs for the unit you have can be found here: http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/specs.html. And, based on the back view (4th image) on the page you listed, I'd say you could use it for your iPod, because you should have the USB charge-cable that came with the iPod. (The one that plugs into the computer, and hence, into the back of the charger.)
However, I'm not an expert in European iPods, being American.
As for software...Apple software, if you're used to using Windows, takes time to get used to. I'm still finding things out, and I switched a year ago. It takes a little time.
    Best of luck--

  • Why no Nike+ sport kit category for 3rd gen nano?

Considering all the problems people (myself included) have been having with the 3rd gen nano and the Nike+ sport kit, does anyone wonder why there is no category for it here (only 1st and 2nd gen)?

It will be coming out soon.

  • Dock for 3rd Gen. iPod Won't Work w/ 5th Gen. iPod?

I have a third generation (G3) iPod, which came with a docking station and an iPod-to-firewire cable. I also have a fifth generation (G5) iPod, which did not come with a docking station, but did come with an iPod-to-USB cable.
I can charge the G3 iPod using the dock and the firewire cable, but the G5 iPod won't charge using that same dock, nor will iTunes recognize the G5 iPod. Even if I plug the USB cable into the dock instead of the firewire one, it won't charge or get recognized.
Am I doing something wrong, do I need a different cable, or do I need to get one of the new docking stations? If the latter, will that docking station work with both my G3 and my G5 iPods?
    - Keith

Yes, the universal dock with work with the 3rd generation iPod--you can check the specs through the Apple Store's product description page. I also know that you can't charge the 5th Gen iPod using the 3rd Gen firewire cable + adapter (I asked about that at the Apple Store today).
What I'd like to know more about is why the 3rd Gen Dock isn't compatible with the 5th Gen iPod even if you use the USB connector. So this is "helpful" but I'm echoing your question about the dock: Why Dock 3 work with iPod 5?

  • What is the iOS for a gen 1 iPad?

WHat is the iOS for a gen1 iPad?

Correct. If the App requires a version of iOS higher than 5.1.1, you will not be able to use it on the iPad 1.
The link below may help in installing older versions of Apps.

  • Troubleshooting software glitch for 3rd Gen iTouch

My sister has a used 3rd Gen iPod touch. It looks fine, not much physical damage beyond normal wear. But it will continuly randomly freeze and crash. It will shut off and we have to turn it back on, only to have it crash again. The frequency of this varies and resetting it and restoring it to factory setting make no difference. Is there anything we could do to fix it?

If restoring the iPod as new doesn't fix it and it isn't connected to anything, it'll need service.

  • Suggest a car charger for 3rd gen iPod?

Has anybody found a car charger that will charge a 3rd generation iPod touch wheel (dock connector)? I've tried two, including a Belkin. Both plug into the bottom connector, but my iPod doesn't charge. It does "wake up," when the plug is inserted, but only long enough to tell me the battery's dead. Turns out the Belkin only is rated to work with newer iPods. I need one that will work with my senior iPod.

I have an old XtremeMac, so I assume they sell them.
You may want to check iLounge.com, they'll have a section for 1/2Gen car adapters.

  • Armor cover for 3rd gen ipod

I need to find a armor cover for a 3rd generation ipod desperately.  Can someone help me please?

In Hong Kong we do not have Apple Shop, they have assigned a 3rd party for iPod service. I remember I brought my Mini iPod there 2 years ago, they did not opened the case instead they did couple of Restores, which did not solve, therefore, they gave me a refurbished mini.
I suspect that when they collect all these broken iPods, they will send back to the Manufactures in China, and will get repair or parts replacement there, once it get fixed, they will replace with a brand new iPod case - - - - - > Here comes the refurbished iPod.

  • Trade 2nd that's still under warranty for 3rd gen?

Am I able to trade my second gen 8gb iPod touch for a thrid gen? It's still under warranty, but I also have a reason to trade it. There is a crack under the home button. So am I able to trade my iPod touch second gen for a thrid gen, or will they just send me another second gen?

Are you talking about the Apple warranty? Or perhaps an extended warranty you purchased through another retailer? You need to look at the policy for whichever warranty you are referring to. If it's the Apple on then no, they will send you an iTouch of the same make that your current one is...refurbished most likely. That's assuming they cover your damage. Some extended warranties will simply refund you the amount you paid for the iTouch (or the current value) in the form of a giftcard so you can purchase another one or use the credit for other merchandise within their store. Some will repair or replace in the same manner that Apple would.

  • New USB cord for 3rd gen Nano not working

Okay, I've got a 3rd generation Nano, and the original USB cord it came with was damaged, so I replaced it with an identical one. But now, when I hook it up to my computer, nothing happens---it won't even recognize that there is anything in its USB port. If somebody could give me any advice on how to handle this, I would really appreciate it.

No it doesn't. Sometimes it make a sound that it should when connecting but that is it. Never actually charges or syncs. And it is a brand new cord.

  • Swap 2nd gen for 3rd gen imac?

    Hey
I bought my lovely iMac about 20 days ago.
Can I swap it for the new one? Is there any way I can do that? As Apple have brought out a new one so soon after i bought mine?
I do love mine, and the new one doesn't seem immensely updated, but I was just wondering if it is possible to swap them...
    Cheers

Any possibility of doing this will need to be negotiated between you and the retailer you purchased the Mac from.

  • Mains Charger for 3rd Gen Nano

I have a USB mains charger that puts out 1A at 5V.
It charges my friends 4th Gen iPod fine, but wont charge my new nano. Does anyone know why this is?
Has the new iPod range been modified to require a sync signal from a computer before it starts to charge, and if so is there anyway around this? (i.e. tying one of the data lines either high or low)

    My charger specs: input 100 - 240V; output: 0.1A, 5V. No problem.
