can anyone help me with an explanation or a set of search terms for understanding:
a. what iPhone 4 does when I hold down the home button to get it out of sleep? it seems to me that this /sometimes/ goes to the Voice Memo function and /sometimes/ it puts a << |>| >> (reverse - play - forward set of buttons) way at the top with my home screen image covering the bottom. I don't understand what this second set does (I tried to use them and they are inactive) and I don't understand if I have options that I can set for coming out of sleep like this.
Also, is there a difference between holding down the home button and just clicking it once or clicking it twice..?
Is there a way to send it straight to record audio like a tape recorder??
I'm searching the iOS5 manual and not coming up with anything.

i do have the phone locked and i think you are right that one click brings me to the unlock screen. two clicks you are saying goes to audio playback which i guess is iTunes? i mean, can i control where this goes? i mean, say i want it to go to an audio /recording/ functionality so that i can record someone speaking. or say i find it uber annoying to go to this audio playback because i /then/ have to click out of it by hitting the home button /again/? i'm not sure (and i can check with your help) but i /think/ that i don't get /anything/ happening sometimes on one click of the home screen and i automatically have thought it is because i should have double clicked it (which i do). anyway, if it only goes to audio playback this seems like a waste of functionality for my uses.
Also, when the phone is /unlocked/ doubleclick goes to a search functionality for me and i'm wondering if there is a way to change this setting - or really /any/ of these type of this-button-goes-somewhere-not-obvious functions...

What I am trying to say is that each time I have to click on the home button to wake up the iphone 5s and then it scans my print and logs me in the phone however I was hoping that by just putting the finger on the button will do the whole thing of waking up + unlocking the phone,

It sounds like it is working the way it should be. You do have to click one of the two buttons. The closest thing to doing it as a single operation is to click the Home button but don't remove your finger from the button (i.e., leave your finger lightly on the button immediately after clicking it).

How do I remove the floating home button from my phone?

How do I remove the floating home button from my iPhone 4? It was originally installed by the Apple Genius Bar because my home button was not working, but I have now bought a replacement iPhone 4 (where the home button works) and I still have the floating home button on the screen. I would like to remove it considering its no longer needed.

Select the "Dot", then "Gestures", chose a Gesture Square, Assistive Touch, Off.

Ipad 3rd generation, iOS 8, home button issue, with fix

I have seen a lot of iOS 8 home button issues on phones but not much on the iPad. But I started having problems right away. Clicking would not get be back to the home screen. Clicking did not get me out of program. It was all intermittent too.
I found a good you tube video about ipad home button issues. First I tried recalibrating the home button. You hold the power switch down till you get the slider to turn off the iPad. then let go and hold down the home button till the screen changes. that seemed to fix most of the problems for a couple hours. But then it came back.
Next tried putting a drop of isopropyl Alcohol on my finger tip and pushed down and up on the outside edge of the home button, all around the circumference. Then did the cal again. That seems to have worked permanently.
iOS 8 is still slow but I guess everyone has that on anything older than a year.

You don't just press the buttons at the same time, you have to hold them down together until you see the Apple logo. This can take 15-30 seconds. If it does not work the first time, connect the device to the charger and try again.

On some iPhones, the Home button itself stopped working. Mostly on the 3GS and prior. This was due to the fact some customers "man handled" the button all too much.
The newer iPhones has some reinforcements for the button.

- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost

IPad 3 and iOS 6 - Home button not working

Since updating to iOS 6, the iPad 3's home button has been acting quite flaky. It often stops responding all together, forcing me to use gestures to quit apps or to access the multitasking panel. I've tried rebooting the device and re-calibrating the home button but the improvements are short-lived.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I'm having the exact same problem, and it's quite annoying because I now have to press the home button on my ipad 3 about 20 times before I can get it to respond, and even then it freezes up. It seemed to have started after upgrading to iOS6, which is really kind of disappointing because you guys (at Apple) charge a lot of money for these devices and create quite a build up prior to releasing new features promising all these new/improved features, but there's always a flaw that overshadows the goo things isn't it? Shouldn't you guys have tested all these things prior to giving us some faulty software and making us go out of our way to try and get these things sorted out for us at apple stores or whatever? I bought my ipad three not two months ago, paid $700 for, and already it's starting to give me issues. I had a similar problem with my iPhone 4, when maybe after you released iOS5 the home button stopped working. I had to go to the store and they couldn't fix it so the solution was to mail me a new device and return the faulty one to Verizon. And when I got the new device, I had to go through the headache of resyncing all my contacts, music, apps, and some features weren't working either. Like for when I tried to sync playlists, I couldn't transfer all the music into the new device because of something to do with protected files purchased from iTunes. I had to do a bunch of research before I could figure out how to actually get my music to sync on the phone.
Now I feel like I'll be in a similar position where, if I go to the apple store, they won't be able to fix this problem and they'll make me mail my device to apple for an exchange for a new one and I'll have to go through the same process again.
If you guys want customer satisfaction, how about you deliver us with products that actually work as they're intended to instead of forcing us to have to do all this extra stuff? It's not like you're going to be willing to return the money I've spent on your faulty product if I've gotten fed up with it are you?

Is it possible to create a PDF "print" button from InDesign behaviors?

In Acrobat, there is a way to create a button with a behavior for "print" that will queue the document up for printing. I don't see a way to do this on the InDesign end, though, via behaviors. Something that will export from InDesign and carry over to the PDF. As this is something I'd like to use on every page, adding it to a template would be much easier than manually adding these to each page in Acrobat post-export.
Any guidance anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

In Acrobat, Print is a button option, however, it only opens the Print dialog box, so the user can set choices and then print.

Reactivate SN resume-from-sleep behavior in Lion?

Most of the time when I put my MacBook to sleep Lion will recreate my desktop environment as I left it, all eight spaces. Occasionally, however, when it wakes from sleep Lion will run that annoying resume feature. All kinds of windows get restored with content that doesn't interest me anymore I can't seem to get rid of Activity Monitor and the Console app, the Finder windows from Spaces 2 through 8 get bunched up in Space 1, resume just doesn't seem to know about the existence of mvim, texmaker doesn't open the last used files, Mathematica just stands there grinding away with all windows darkened and unrepsonsive... the list goes on.... and on..... and on....
I know you can close apps with the [alt]+[cmd]+[Q] shortcut to discard windows but I never remember to do that.
You can disable the resume crap on an app-for-app basis by running: 'defaults write com.apple.<INSERT_APPNAME> ApplePersistenceIgnoreState YES' from the command line. This already worked for over a dozen apps but chasing down the correct write string for a couple of dozen apps is tedious.
I also know about the check button in the quit screen and the global disabling option in system setting.
None are adequate solutions except for point #2 which helped alot but didn't solve the problem. So my question is: Is it possible to deactivate resume and reactivate the old sleep behaviour from Snow Leopard? It worked prefectly every time and didn't open files from last session which I have absoloutely no interest in now.

Same happening here. I also have a problem with Mail.app crashing when I close the window with cmd+w. My upgrade to Mountain Lion was applied Lion that had been migrated from my old MacBook.
The migrated setup was working fine for just over a week before I upgraded to Mountain Lion. Unfortunately I didn't check that Time Machine was backing up my machine and it turns out I don't have that as an option of rolling back to Lion.
Hoping that a fix is found to both problems. Fairly confident given that other people are reporting the same, even on a clean upgrade.

so i got my iphone 4 the day they came out here in canada and havent had a problem with it
shortly after updating to iOS 5 the home button started to become unresponsive. at first it was just once or twice a day and slowly got worse over time.
i took it in to a local apple store and they took it apart and cleaned it but were unable to resolve the issue they did help me set up assistive touch so i could at least get out of apps and back to the home screen.
the iOS 5.01 came out after installing it the problem went away completely for about a week and then started to reapper
I just did a backup/restore and hope that will help for the time being.
has anyone else had this problem and if so are there any solutions

My iPad 1 has the same problem,but it did in iOS4, too— affects both orientations, but sometimes one more than the other. (Which one is worse switches back and forth over time, though!) It started about one year in to owning the unit, maybe a little less.
Alarmingly, I found that if I applied some gentle pressure to the back of the iPad in a sort of "uneven" way (more pressure on one side than the other) it often fixd it for a while, until the next time I put it in my bag or leave it sitting for a while. Could it be a hardware issue, that you just happened to notice now because upgrading made you place the iPad in a certain way or press the home button a lot more in a short period of time while playing with it?

hi all i am having one issue with my iphone 5 16gb white, some times when i press home screen or sleep button to check my phone, nothing happens, it shows nothing like not responding, but after approx 1 mint i press again it shows lock screen and i can use this iphone like normal.
daily 2-3 times it happens with me. same thing with my friend also.
i tried reseting , restoring, and all other tricks, but couldnt able to resolve this issue.

Buttons and Switches
Sleep/Wake button won't lock or unlock iPhone
To lock the phone, press the Sleep/Wake button. Note: By default, if you don't touch the screen for a minute, iPhone locks automatically.
To unlock iPhone, press the Home button or the Sleep/Wake button, then slide the slider.
If either of the above steps don't work, try turning iPhone off and then on again.
If the iPhone will not power off, reset it.
Try to lock or unlock the phone.
