IOS 5 on 3GS - "7 Gig in Other"

Hi
Last night i upgraded my 3GS to iOS5, and now in "Other" it says 7.1GB!!! ***!!!!! Isn't this just bookmarks, notes and the like? I barely have anything like that on the phone. I really don't get it so any advide would be great.
It also says i have 4gb audio, yet NO music content on the phone, and same for Video... Apple has really screwed up it feels.

This indicates corrupt files.
A restore should resolve.

  • Almost 28 gig of 'other' added to my ipod after upgrading to ios 5

Immediately after upgrading to ios 5, my 32 gig iPod touch was clogged with 27.9g of 'other' data that wasn't there before the update, leaving no room for anything else. Any idea what this data could be or how to get rid of it? If nothing else I'll try reseting it and installing software again.

Thank you wjosten. It did work!!

How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

You have a corrupt iOS installation
Restore as new and add  back up with expectation the corruption is in  the backup somewhere
If that is the case then Restore as new and recreate

You need to restore you iPod to gedure the "other" to its normal of less than 0.5 GB.  A restore from backup works if the large other is not in the backup.  Make sure that you turn off outo syncing (iTunes>Preferences>Device and check the box that says Prevent iPOds....syncing.  Otherwise, the backup will contain the other.

  • What is the "other" on my iTunes? It says I have have 9.8 gigs of other.

If it's contasntly growing and gets to be a big number then there's an issue. You should back everything up and restore.

  • I have 200 Gig of "Other"

Before downloading Mt Lion, I had more than 3/4 of my HD available. Now I have near to nothing because I have 200 GIG of Other. What the **** is it and how do I deal with it? The computer is running fine, but I suspect in a while it won't be. Surely there shold be a way to identify this stuff and get rid of it.
I tried Disk Utility and repairing permissions, but it didn't help.

Those are backups of your mobile devices.
I need to get rid of ****, but it doesn't tell me where the **** is. I have all this stuff called "Other" that does not show up as other on my HD with Daisy DIsk.
See The Storage Display for an explanation of what's in "Other."  200 GB sounds like quite a lot, though, so see Where did my Disk Space go?  The steps there may find some large stuff that's hidden.

so I have a 1 TB hard drive and I am trying to edit some stuff from my go pro and when looking to free up space on my hardrive it shows on about this mac that there is 453.97 gigs of other what could all this be? How could I go about deleating some of it?
Also when I dupdated to osx 10 the folder windows no longer show how much free space on the hard drive at the bottom like it use to which was verry handy is there any way that I could get that to show up agian?

OmniDiskSweeper is a good program to see what's taking up space: http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnidisksweeper/

  • Why is the new software using 3.7 gig on Other??

Updated my phone last night removing photos and adding new music, all was fine and I had a good 2 or 3 gig spare. Tonight I update my software as per the notice from Applie saying it's available, and now I'm using 3.7 gig on Other? What on earth have they just put on my phone that uses more gig than I use on my apps???!?!?!?

There shouldn't be more than 1 GB "Other" (usually less). There is corrupted data or metadata on the phone. Restore your phone in iTunes using a backup.  Rarely, you have to restore as new

no… the way to confirm is make sure in settings>messages>send and receive that all the apple ids are different in there.

  • I have an iphone  4 8gig there is 2.4 gig of "other" showing on my usage which is more than all oter data on the phone.  What is it and how do I delete some to clear space?

I have an iphone 4 8gig there is 2.4 gig of "other" showing on my usage which is more than all other data on the phone.  What is it and how do I delete some to clear space?

Sorry. We can't help you. It's no longer an iPhone. Apple won't touch it.
Take it to whoever replaced the screen and see if they can help you.
iPhones are not user servicable and Apple does not sell iPhone parts at all. I'd be surprised if you were actually able to back it up at this point. It sounds like it's completely borked.

  • I have 3.5 gigs of "other" what is it and how do i get rid of it?

On my itunes when my iphone is pluged in it says that i have now 3.9 gigs of "other" what is it and how do i get rid of it?

Other is data that does not fit into the rest of the catergories listed on the summary tab.  This includes user data and app settings/data.
3.5 GB is a lot... and typically indicates corruption.
You can try a reset of the device and re-syncing, sometime this will clear it up... but typically the resolution is to restore the device from backup first.  If that doesn't resolve a restore as new will.
Other should be in the range of 300-800mb.
