IOS 5's iPad memory management deletes app data when memory is low.

ForeFlight claims iOS 5 includes a new file management feature that arbitarily deletes files to make room for new data when iPad memory is insufficient. The only warning given to the iPad user is a "cleaning" symbol. This makes no sense to me. Something is missing from this story. Has anyone heard of this.
Read ForeFlight's warning to its user base here: http://blog.foreflight.com/2011/10/14/flying-with-foreflight-and-ios-5/

I think that makes it quite clear:

  • IOS 8: I want to permanently delete apps such as stocks, tips, compass, passbook

iOS 8: I want to permanently delete apps such as stocks, tips, compass, passbook and Game Center from my phone.   I really wish Apple would make these apps optional.  Truth is I don't use them and they are just using up space on my phone.  Any suggestiond anyone?

You cannot delete them. They are part of the iOS.

  • I want to free up pc disk space. Can i delete app data/files from my pc now I use iCloud??

    Hi
I have not been able to find a relevant thread, if there is one please direct me.
Sorry if my use of jargon/process is not that clear.
    I am using iCloud.
Can I, and how do I, delete app data from my laptop and keep all apps running normally and still on my ipad and ipod as they currently are?
My computer is overflowing and I see iCloud as a chance to clear some hard disk space.
If i delete the apps from my itunes browser on PC then it deletes them from my entire Itunes account. Can I just go into my itunes folder and delete the base application files?
If I remove files/apps and I sync my devices using my pc for music/video/photos etc then will it pick up that the apps and app data is missing from my pc?
    Thanks in advance
    lach

Im trying to get an answer to this same question. My poor pc is almost out of hard drive space bc of all the iphone backups pre icloud. I want to know if I go into the itunes file on my pc and delete all those files will they still be safe considering they are on icloud now? Its frustrating bc I cant seem to get an answer to this question. Have you come across any information on this issue since posting this question? Thanks so much!

do you have some apps installed on the phone memory istelf. there are some apps that will only install on the phone and not the memory card. is your firmware up to date? did you add anything new, try also removing some of the messages from the memory card and all the folders, send, inbox, outbox if applicable and see if this will make any difference.

  • Does the "Reset All Settings" option delete app data?

I have upgraded from a 16GB iPhone 4S to a 64GB iPhone 6. I restored my new phone from a backup of my old one just so I could transfer app data from one app. All went well with that, but now the app is sending notifications that I can no longer progress because my phone lacks storage space. That may have been true for my 16GB iPhone, but now I have over 43GB of free space on my new iPhone 6, and it's still telling me I'm out of space. I'm thinking this has something to do with the "settings" of my old 4S being transferred in the backup I made. I am willing to try a Settings Reset if and only if it will not affect app data. If it does, what other methods do you suggest to convince my iPhone it has ample storage space?

Reset All Settings does not delete app data. It DOES reset your home screen layout, however, plus any default settings that you have changed.

  • How can i delete app data on iPhone without uninstalling the app?

How can i delete app data on iPhone 4 without removing the application.     Facebook application size -57mb. And its app data is 70mb

    This is ridiculous!
Imagine this scenario, can't be that unlikely:
I'm going away on holiday, or away on work for a while, and I'm not taking the computer to which I sync my phone. Before I leave I fill my iPhone up with music to take with me. While I'm travelling I want to install a new app, but I don't have space. I look to delete content from the phone - I can delete podcasts but not music. Unfortunately I don't have enough podcasts to free up space that way. So I don't purchase the app I wanted.
    This is bad for:
    1. The user (me)
    2. The app developer - lost download.
    3. Apple - they lose their cut of the app download, and royally p#@* off a user.
Can someone explain to me why this limitation is good for anyone?!

HI, I need your help. How can I delete all data, when I do not have the special security code, which I didn´t remember ? I also think, that I never create this code before. But I cannot put my settings back.

You must remember the code, if you can't then take the phone and proof of purchase to an Apple Store.

  • IOS 7.1.1 iPad unable to delete apps

I downloaded a game from the App Store onto my iPad iOS 7.1.1
and don't like it but when I tried to delete it, all the icon shake but no "X" appears.
How do you delete apps? Found several tips online but none work because
no X's show up on shaking icons. Nothing will delete. i tried double-tapping
it & holding 2nd tap as suggested in another help. The app opens after the first
tap so never get to holding tap. Tried PC #1troubleshooting tool and powered
it off and charged it up. No go.
I Would appreciate advice. I'm afraid to update to 7.1.2 -have heard problems.

  • Garbage collection & memory management causing app to run poorly on iOS 7

Sorry I post the same question but in the wrong forum (I posted it in the Flash Player Beta Channel).
Hi, I am currently working on a game built using Air SDK v. 3.8 that is running fine on iOS 6. However, since the release of iOS, sometime it becomes unresponsive. When profiling with Adobe Scout, the problem seems to have something to do with the garbage collection. In Scout, some GC pass could take up to few seconds on iOS 7, while it would never take more than 700 ms on iOS 6.
I've tried to compile the project using the new 3.9 beta, and the result is somewhere in between what we've got on iOS 6 and iOS 7 (1-2 seconds).
I'm wondering if this is something that you are aware of, and if there's a fix (or optimisation) around the corner. Thanks a lot.

    I am also seeing this.
Here are screenshots of Scout profiling the same sequence in my game on iPad 2 iOS 7 vs iPad 2 iOS 6.   The initial burst of activity is a loading sequence, followed by automated gameplay.
iOS 7: Please note the position of the red line on the graph, and the time associated with garbage collection.
    iOS 6:
Ignoring the "loading sequence" section, the "vertical line" garbage collection spikes on the iOS 7 screen shot are on the order of 2-5 seconds (garbage collection time) each.  The biggest spikes in the iOS 6 screen shot are all < 50 ms in comparison (again, note the position of the red line on the graph).
Earlier in the day I captured a few garbage collection spikes on iOS 7 that were > 10 seconds each, with the largest being a whopping 24 seconds.
Any insights, supporting evidence, or alternative theories are appreciated.
UPDATE: I tested an iPad3 iOS7 today and did not experience this behavior.
UPDATE: I tested with another iPad2 iOS7 and did see the behavior on that device as well.

  • IPad will not delete apps )ios8.2)

Since upgrading to ios8 I have been unable to delete any apps manually from my iPad. I have an iPad
    model # A1460 Wi-Fi + Cellular
When I hold a finger down on an app, they all begin to "jiggle," but there are NO black "x" marks to actually delete! !
Anyone else experiencing this? I hoped the update would be the fix, but no.

Thanks Skydiver....Apparently restrictions WERE enabled!   What a quick fix for my 4th Gen iPad.
I appreciate your very prompt reply.

  • HT4972 Trying to get an update on my iPad because I have apps and when I try to update it tells me I need iOS 5.  What do I need to do?

Need to update my iPad b/c my apps are trying to install updates but I'm getting the error message "need iOS5" but cant find how to do that.

If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

  • Apps recycle when memory limit exceeded path not specified

How can I find what path it is looking for so I can fix the path? I am getting this error on all of my app servers. I have checked all my app pools inside of all my app servers and none of them have any sort of maximum. Some do have times set but nothing
    even close to a max.
Title: Application pools recycle when memory limits are exceeded.
Severity: 0 - Rule Execution Failure
    Category: Performance
Explanation: The system cannot find the path specified.
Remedy: In the Internet Information Services Manager, uncheck any memory-based maximums set for the application pools named above. For more information about this rule, see "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=142692".

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you got the error on all of your app servers.
It is caused by that Application pools are configured to recycle when memory limits are exceeded.
You need to change the application pool recycling settings in Internet Information Services (IIS).
In addition, you can disable the rule or install the app pools/services on every server in the farm.
    More information:
Application pools recycle when memory limits are exceeded (SharePoint 2013)
SharePoint 2010 – Application pools recycle when memory limits are exceeded.
