IOS 5 tethering vagaries

When I was running iOS 4.x on my iPhone 4 and my iPad 2, tethering the latter to the former was child's play. Since iOS 5, it's been a different story. The tether never happens without a lot of fiddling (restarting either device or both, toggling wifi on/off, waiting for a minute with the settings screen open, etc...).
Is this an ongoing bug in the OS.? Or something else? Any known solutions?

Update ... I've now concluded that it does in fact work. But it can take several minutes to connect. Before iOS5 it was within a few seconds nearly every time. Any ideas why it's so slow now?

  • Still tethering issues with iOS 6.1.4

    Hi
I have an Iphone 5 and recently upgraded to iOS 6.1.4 and running latest itunes
I used to be able to tether my Android tablet (ASUS) to my Iphone when travelling on the train to work but now it is impossible.
I can connect my partner's Samsung phone to my Android but cannot use my Iphone to tether to the Android.
Cannot use bluetooth to tether either.
So Apple, given everyone is complaining about tethering with their Iphones what are you going to do about it????
You need to pick up your act otherwise we will go to Android phones and you will lose significant market share.
I used to love my Iphone and upgraded to the Iphone 5 but seriously considering ditching it now if there is no prompt response from Apple to fix this bug.

We are not apple here and you do not address apple.  We are users just like you, after all this is a user forum. My guess is that what you are wishing to do is not provided for by the bluetooth profiles available for the phone.  If you don't like the phone get a different one.... it is your choice

  • IOS 4.2.1 tethering gone.

Hi there, I have following issue:
Internet tethering options and internet tethering itself is gone on my iPhone 3G under iOS 4.2.1.
    * iPhone is NOT Jailbroken, never, ever, was.
    * iPhone is officially unlocked.
    * My carrier officially supports tethering (in fact I PAY for it).
    * It was there in iOS 4.1
    * It was there in iPhone OS 3.x days
I remember Apple did the same in iOS 4.0 days.
Question - anyone have same syndroms? I allready know it's common but I wanted to ask on international boards.
Any Advice? Custom IPCC? Downgrade? JAILBREAK?
I allready sent feedback to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
I'd like you to also send feedback to Apple about this issue, since it's big one IMHO - Apple DID advertise iPhone with tethering feature back in the day and now its SECOND TIME they "forget" to enable this option.

I am here in Germany with an offically unlocked iPhone 3G from t-mobile.
Nowadays I use a SIM Card from SIMYO, who offically allow tethering but woh do not have an offical carrier settings file (which *****, apple, it is so annoying to see these "call forwarding popups" but that is a different problem)
On 4.1 tethering was configurable and worked like a charm. With the update to 4.2.1 tethering is gone. Restoring did not help, with or without backup. Inserting my old t-mobile SIM card did not help either.
This is really nasty. I want it get fixed NOW!

  • Factory unlocked iPhone 3G, iOS 4 support tethering?

Some of us knows that during the 3.1.2 all iPhone Factory unlocked phone had their tethering disabled. and only when 3.1.3 came out, we got back our tethering option for Factory unlocked iPhones.
will tethering be available for iPhone Factory unlocked after iOS 4 update?
    Thank you in advance

    Allan
Your advice is about all I can think of doing. I have a friend in Milan that the phone can be sent back to. I have a funny feeling that when I get the phone back I'll have the same issues.....
I can get a antenna replaced here in the UK for about GBP60....but that would invalidate the warranty.
What is a lingering doubt over it being a hardware issue is why would it work perfectly with one contry's SIM and not anothers ?

  • Tethering doesn´t work anymore since I updated to IOS 7.1

Since I updated to IOS 7.1 the tethering function doesn´t work anymore on my Iphone 4.
I have recently purchased an IPAD Mini, as the iphone has become so incredibly slow after update to IOS 7.0. I am travelling a lot and use the tethering function to access the internet. And now, after update to IOS 7.1  I can´t even use my IPAD anymore when travelling.
I must say, enough is enough. My patience is at it´s end. A professional company doesn´t work like this !
Apple, please react and get this problem solved.
    regards
    Richard

What Apple wants from his customers?
    1) I've paid my iPhone 4S 900 euros;
    2) I'm used to buy music and apps from iTunes store;
    3) my iCloud space costs 32 euros per year
and, like me, millions of customers around the world!
and Apple does not allow me (and many others) to use the internet traffic for which I (we) pay my (our) provider, that's not among those that directly sell iPhone??? Is this your idea of a really unblocked device as you falsely declsre from the pages of Apple online store ?!? Shame on you!
If I had know that the 7.1 led to this I'd never updated my iPhone. No one (Apple and the sites that live because of her) told about this issue in their enthusiastic comments on the new, updated version, of iOS. Shame on you!
This would claim a class action against such a behaviour!
    I'm disgusted
    thank you

  • IOS 5 / bluetooth and tethering

Since my upgrade to IOS 5 the wireless functions have become unstable
    1) When I use blue tooth with my car, the phone just disconnects after about 30 minutes, then the phone will crash about 30 minutes later
    2) When I turn on wifi hotspot tethering my computer can not discover the wifi network. If I update the password, the hotspot is then visible until I turn it on an off again.
I used both of these features daily under ios 4 and it worked fine.
This is an iphone 4 not a 4S
Has anyone else had issues since upgrading to IOS 5 on and iphone 4?

Please stop bumping, it is rude.
WiFi is the faster and stronger connection with more range and far less susceptibility to interference. I would go that route and forget about BT.

  • New iPad tethered to iPhone 4 both on iOS 6, iMessage has stopped working.

Since updating to iOS 6 on both devices, iMessage has stopped working on the iPad when tethered.
It still works on the home wifi, but the progress bar goes to about 95% done before a send failure message comes up.
I haven't found any other apps not working over the tethered 3G network
iMessage is turned on and works elsewhere.

  • Tethering on my iPhone 5 iOS 6.0.1 seems impossible ???

Hi all, I taken delivery 10 days ago of my iPhone 5 got the updated software iOS 6.0.1 and on the Three One Plan "unlimited data plan"
I have bee using iPhones for over 2 years so I'm no novice ! However I am very dissapointed at this moment in time with my new iPhone 5 as I am experiencing tethering issues.
My iPhone is setup correctly for tethering via the personal hotspot BUT my Laptop, Tablet or Xbox cannot see the iPhone network ? On two occasions my Laptop picked the iPhone broadcast but no matter what i do now my Laptop or any other devices cannot find my iPhone network.
This is very frustrating any help or has anyone else experienced this problem ? would be appreciated. Thanks

I have the same problem...my macbook pro won't see my iphone as an option to connect to. I've found that if I go to settings, then personal hotspot on my iphone 5 and leave it with this screen open, then go to my computer's available connections and keep opening/closing the available connections screen, the iphone will usually come up as an available connection within about 10 seconds. If I don't open my iphone's personal hotspot screen, then it will usually not come up as an available connection on my computer.

  • IOS 4 and neverlocked IPhone 3GS from Italy - is tethering still available?

All users of officially unlocked iPhones (e.g. from italy)made the experience, that Apple firmware-update 3.1.2 did cancel the functionality of tethering.
Here in Germany there are several carriers allowing tethering officially. The problem has been solved with the firmware-update 3.1.3 Since this time I am tethering daily with Alice (carrier) and without any problems. But I am very afraid of iOS 4 - what does not work for officially unlocked iPhones this time? Tethering?, Push-Notifications? Google Sync ?
Please report your experiences in this forum only if you have an officially (not "somehow unlocked")iPhone 3 GS and already updated to iOS4. Thank you!

In the meanwhile I upgraded my iPhone 3 GS from Italy to iOS 4 and tehering still works. Even faster. Before I upgraded I deleted the Mobileconfig- ipcc - file I downloaded in the past and made all network settings manually. The Tethering-Button disappeared immediately after the upgrade to iOS 4.1, but after configurations everything was fine. So iOS 4 does not restrict tethering again as iOS 3.1.2 did in the past.

  • Upgrade to iOs 6.01 iPhone 3GS - USB tethering issue

Since upgrading from iOs 6 to 6.01 I can no longer have USB tethering.
    Have

    - turn on/off personal hotspot setting
Nothing seems to work - pls help.
Am with Tesltra in Australia (apn = Telstra.wap)

Nope.  All working fine on my family's various iDevices including iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPad mini, and 3rd generation iPad.

  • USB-tethering issues (OS X 10.6.8, iTunes 10.7, iOS 6)

S.O.S. I've been getting sick for weeks now after every step I've taken using the group discussion I wasn't successful literally at all. I even clean install my laptop desperate to regain the connection. I really like the usb-tethering, please please help me on this??
I have MB white running SNOW LEOPARD with iTUNES 10.7  and iOS 6 iPhone 4s yet still not detecting USB on my Network under System Preferences.

I have now solved my tethering problem - I didnt need to use terminal.
I downloaded the kext utility, unzipped it and put the .app file into my applications folder, then I dragged the kext file from my laptop (AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext   version 2.3.0)
The utility replaced the one that itunes 10.7 must have installed or modified into a backup folder and installs  the one from my laptop where I was still on itunes 10.6.3 and it has the same permissions as the other files in that folder system/library/extensions
I rebooted and plugged my iphone in via the usb charger/data cable and immediatly the system put up a window stating:
A new interface has been detected
the "iphone USB" network interface has not been set up.  To set up this interface use network preferences"
I then clicked the blue button NETWORK PREFERENCES
This showed the iphone in NOT CONNECTED status so I clicked on ASSIST me and just keep going, you will notice the red dot beside the iphone changing to orange (no IP address) then it changes to green and all is well!!
Thanks a million to Hibernian56 and whoever made kext-utility!!
No thanks to apple for not testing their software properly and wasting my time with hours of reading online!!!
Im on 10.6.8 on both machines
The problem with the kext file that was updated by itunes 10.7 was that the machine no longer detected the iphone thru the usb cable.  Thanks to the other users on here its now fixed!  ;-)

  • IOS 5 - problems tethering iPad 2 to iPhone 3GS via Bluetooth

Here's my two cents worth of trouble with iOS5:
-Update of my 3GS took ages, but that seems to be the norm and nothing to worry about.
-Tethering my non-3G iPad2 is now a problem: the personal hotspot is enabled, bluetooth enabled on ipad and iphone, connection is made, blue ribbon appears on phone telling me so, data plan should be OK (at least it was until Wednesday), APN and stuff for tethering entered on the mobile networks page. And yet all I get is: no connection to the internet. Not a single app seems to be able to connect, although an hour ago Safari seemed to be able to load a small amount of a page (but this took ages). iPhone works nicely, no data issues at all.
Has anybody else experienced this kind of a problem? Is there something I can do apart from wait for iOS 5.0.1?

    norman_bates wrote:
Have you tried tethering via WiFi instead of Bluetooth?
No, because the 3GS unfortunately does not do WiFi tethering, this is only available for users of the iPhone 4(S). I was already glad that tethering worked via Bluetooth with my now-rapidly-approaching-ante-deluvian-status 3GS.
But "upgrading" to a 4S would probably solve a few problems, the only thing from stopping me is the investment resistance of several hundred Euros...

  • IOS 7.1.x tethering keeps defaulting to off

I use tethering from my (non jailbroken) iPhone as my main internet connection for my macbook air (10.9.4).
It used to be great - just plug in via usb and play.
But since iOS 7.1, the tethering option has defaulted to 'off' - when you go into settings to change it, you see "Personal tethering (off)" in the settings home screen... when you tap on personal tethering to change the setting, it immediately switches itself on. It's just really annoying...
Looks like a bug, but does anyone know of a fix?
No changes since updating to 7.1.1 or 7.1.2 or with updates on mac side.

Start basic and try resetting your iPhone by simultaneously pressing and holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until you see the Apple Logo. This can take up to 15 seconds so be patient and don't release the buttons until the logo appears.
Try again to see if the problem persists.
