IOS 6.1.3 draining data and battery. Help!!!

New update (6.1.3) drains battery twice as fast and is draining data, which is going to cost me a lot in overages!!! First month with an apple phone turning out disastrous!

iOS does not drain data.  Either an email is stuck in the outbox constantly trying to send or an app is constantly downloading/sending data.
Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • Date and Battery icons playing up?

    Hi all --
Have an annoying date and battery icon inconsistency - maybe its a recurring prob. for others, but havent been able to find the answer on the boards.
After opening the P.B. from standby, the time shown is the time I put P.B. to sleep. About five seconds later it resets itself to the current time. Last time this happened, I started getting kernel panics after not rectifying the prob. (doubtful its related) - all was fixed with a PRAM / PMU / NVRAM zap. have tried PRAM-ing again, but no change to time delay. (havent attempted PMU & NVRAM unless necess.)
The battery icon has also been showing incorrect usage 'time left' - until i switch between the 'percentage' and 'time' options in the battery icon drop down menu.
Is zapping the PMU / NVRAM / PMU the correct way to approach a fix for this?
    Am I close?
Thnx for any advice in advance --
    cheers,
    J.

Generally, letting the phone completely discharge and then charging to 100% helps with this. If not, a Reset, and then a Restore if that doesn't work.

  • Since few days iPhone 4 suddenly uses huge amount of data and battery, how to find out which App is guilty?

    Hi Community,
since Friday my iPhone 4 startet using huge amounts of mobile data and rapidly wastes battery lifetime (50% in 3 hous!) It also gets quite warm even when I don't use it at all.
I suspect an app does this, because in flight mode battery is ok.
How do I find out which app is to blame without having to uninstall all apps?
    Thanks for your help.
    Kind regards
    Nymphenburg

You need to look into using the SQL*Loader utility:

  • IPhone 5 Data and no help from Verizon Customer Serv!

My boyfriend and I both have the iPhone 5, and an iPad on my account. We upgraded his on the iPad line since it was up for an upgrade. He got his.. and is blowing thru gb's but no big deal, he has unlimited. I had unlimited as well, got my iPhone 5 this week on Monday. I work 8-7 so I'm rarely on the internet or any data using apps on my phone. I started getting messages about using my data, but thought nothing of it, as Verizon sent these to me about a year ago and told me it was a mistake. So today I got a message that I am over my data and receiving over charges!!! So I call- BAM! We took you off your unlimited plan- nope we cannot put you back, it was grandfathered... hi um ya, I never said to take it off, nor did I agree to that... The rep says it was on social media and I should have known this.. I may be unlike the rest of the universe apparently, but I pay 0 attention to social media. Then she says the rep who upgraded my phone should have told me this.. well he did not, actually we discussed my plan (per me asking if their was a way to reduce the bill) and he suggested keeping my unlimited plan..and took my iPhone 5 order! So, since she offered me ZERO resolution or help, I asked for a supervisor.. who was as concerned about my issue as a sack of potatoes! She said you can return your iPhone 5 back to us(I would have to pay the shipping)and we can REQUSET that you have your original plan back, but we cannot guarantee that you will get it back. So I say.. You're telling me that a multi-million dollar company is taking something away, does not have to tell me it is happeneing, and opposed to wanting to keep consumers you would rather me send the device back and not re-new my service for 2 years? That does not seem like customer service, loyalty, or good business to me. She yells.. you can send it BACK and we can try to put your plan back! I had enough at that point- Filed a complaint with the FCC...
Gave myself a few hours to calm down.. in the mean time letting my FB community know Verizon screwed me and to be careful. In which time about 6-9 friends text me telling me they upgraded to whatever device and are getting these charges!!!! SO YOU FAIL TO TELL EVERYONE HUH... WOW... So apparently I am not the only one who was not aware of this when placing the order, and oh yea missed it on social media because you have to listen/watch social media to balance your personal Verizon account... NOT
So I try to call Verizon again to be logical and change my plan since I'd rather not argue with Verizon over a 1,000$ bill for my overages.. This rep tells me I should switch to the 8gb plan, which will actually save us about 30$ a month!! SOUNDS GREAT RIGHT...... Followed by me asking (since the bf has the NFL app and is on it all the time..) How much data does the other =line use? ..... Well he used 6.8gb......ok and I had 2gb... and I went over... lets count this out folks.. 6.8+2= OVER 8! Then that is not even including the data the iPad uses!!
Basically... I am screwed! I can give back the iPhone 5.. that I have every right to have... and pay out the rear for data... or I can give it back to Verizon, and *HOPE* they give me my plan back! In my opinion.. this is a bunch of CRAP!

I also did not know about this change before I ordered the iPhone 5. I ordered the phone on-line and it let me choose the same plan I was already on with unlimited data before I placed the order. Now they are basically saying, "too bad." Did you ever get this resolved?

  • Iphone 5 using burning data and battery

I have an Iphone 5 which uses abnormal amounts of data.
even with no programs running in the background it uses around 1 mb pr second.
this is monitored in an app.
the phone is hot and the battery goes from full to empty withing 5-6 hours.
using the monitor I can see it counting always, if it is connected to wifi that is being used, if not it uses 3G..
just yesterday over 500mb was used on 3G, thats in 1 day, in addition to this over 1.5GB was used on wifi...
Weird thing is that i switched from Iphone 4 to this one for the same problem.
I cannot see how this can be a sw issue since apps are not allowed to use data if the phone is not in use after 20 mins...
    Anyone else experience this??

I got my new iPhone 5 just 3 days ago in Saudi Arabia from a certified apple retailer
I want to know about the exchange policy in Saudi Arabia
What did the "certified Apple retailer" have to say when you asked?

  • What should my Macbook fan speed be? and battery help

My mac goes hot real easy and my battery goes down really quick. Ive tried doing what websites have told me to do (Eg. Turn down brighness) but not helping at all. HELP

There is a free to download App called iStat, which will run in dashboard.
This will enable you to see actual temperatures at key points in the Macbook (CPU etc). It will also tell you fan speeds etc (but take care interpreting such information. It's at best a 'relative' tool)
    Here is the link;

If you're still worried after you see real figures, post again with the temps etc.

  • Date and Time Help

    Hi,
I have a varchar column (Start_Time )which currently contains time .
    Example :
    08:00:00
    09:30:00
    15:30:00
    16:30:00
I created new column (Start_Time_New) which is Date Datatype .
This column should be updated with values from Start_Time column
    a)Sysdate
b)AM PM should be added .
    Above Example :
    Start_Time     Start_Time_New
    8:00:00     7/5/2012 8:00:00 AM
    9:30:00     7/5/2012 9:30:00 AM
    15:30:00     7/5/2012 3:30:00 PM
    16:30:00     7/5/2012 4:30:00 PM
    Please Help .
    Thanks in Advance.

    Hi,
    Here's one way:
    UPDATE     table_x
    SET     start_time_new = TO_DATE ( TO_CHAR (SYSDATE, 'YYYY-MM-DD') || start_time
                                   , 'YYYY-MM-DDHH24:MI:SS'
;A slightly more efficient way, but much more confusing, is
    UPDATE     table_x
    SET     start_time_new = TO_DATE (start_time, 'HH24:MI:SS') + ( TRUNC (SYSDATE)
                                                                - TRUNC (SYSDATE, 'MONTH')
;If you'd care to post CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements for your sample data, then I could test it.
Either way, this assumes that start_time is a VARCHAR2 column, and that every non-NULL value is really a valid time.

    Changed ":=" to "=".

Use 'AM' (or 'PM', it doesn;t matter which) in the 2nd argument of TO_CHAR when you display the DATE, if that's what you want.

  • Data usage and battery drain has skyrocketed with iOS 8.1.2 (maybe earlier)

3 weeks ago my wife got a text message on her iPhone 5 from AT&T that she had used 90% of her data for the month.  30 seconds later, she got another one saying that she had used 100%.  Granted, her data plan is small, 200 MB.  But, for the last two years she has used as little as 17 MB in a month and her largest prior to this latest month was 49 mb.  This month she got to 380 mb before we were able to shut off her cell data.  Otherwise, a second chunk of 200 MB and another $15 would have been added to the month.
We had noticed that her battery had been draining rather rapidly in standby mode with no background apps running when she didn't have access to WiFi.  We have now correlated the two results, High Cell data usage, Quick battery drain and very warm phone.  In case anyone is wondering about her iPhone 5 being one in the recall, it is.  I took it in and had it tested.  Apple says the battery is fine.  It does hold a charge well.  When all network communications are shut down on her phone and it is in standby mode, there is no noticeable loss of charge in 24 hours (our longest test).
Since I have a grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan with AT&T, I have been doing some testing on my iPhone 5s.  Sure enough, I've seen similar results.  With nearly everything turned off except Cell Data, I've seen 483 MB used in 24 hours.  Of that total, 479 MB was used for Documents & Sync.  I even have everything turned off in my iCloud account, Location services are turned off, no push notifications etc...
The best I can figure, this has been a problem since we installed 8.1.2 and yesterday I installed 8.1.3 resulting in no positive effect on this issue.
At this rate of data usage and no access to WiFi, my wife would have to have a 15 Gb data plan to keep from exceeding her limit.  I don't think AT&T even offers one that big anymore.  I might have to switch to Sprint or T-Mobile if this doesn't get resolved.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance for your shared insights.

Hey this is Brian, bjmcmurry, under a different user ID.  If I logged in as bmcmurry, original post, I was just getting a server error and couldn't get to this discussion nor post a comment anywhere.
Anyway, let me be as brief as I can.  After an extensive analysis of replicating the problem on another phone to eliminate it being a hardware specific issue and that the test phone has an unlimited data plan, I was able to stop the excessive data usage and consequential battery drain.  I believe I have a reasonable explanation of the problem, an iOS logic bug.
I had everything under my control clamped down on the test phone to minimize data usage.  Also, I was forcing all data usage to use the cell towers.  I determined that I was burning at least 11 to 13 Mb per hour doing nothing important.  I literally had everything turned off except 'Settings' was allowed to use Cell data providing a avenue to log into the Apple ID.
The two phones had 2 things in common, they were using the same Apple ID and the same version of the OS.  One was a iPhone 5 and the other was a 5s.
Here is a synopsis of my experience via my written evaluation of the Apple support system (Apple Rep name's have been removed):
After a couple of hours on the phone with an Apple Care Senior support Analyst, it was suggested that I go to the Apple Store to 1) get my battery replace in the iPhone 5 since it qualified for the replacement program and 2) see if the Genius could provide me with any insight in the data usage issue and battery drain.
I'm certainly glad I had multiple reasons to visit the closest Apple store, a 45 min drive.  I got the battery replaced, thanks for that.
Regarding the important issue to me that brought me to the Genius Bar, excessive Cell data usage, I thought the Genius did a wonderful job listening and documenting the problem we were experiencing.  Unfortunately, educating us on the use of the product or replacing our phone was not going to solve the problem.  He eventually figured it out, this was not a user error or broken hardware.  We surmised that the reason I was sent to him was to verify and document that there was a problem.  I clearly had a problem.  After writing copious notes on the issue, The Genius smartly referred me back the the AppleCare Senior Advisor.  So, back to AppleCare Senior Analyst I went. She, knowing this was not a simple problem to solve i.e. beyond her level of expertise, got an Apple Software engineer involved.
My primary frustration is that this should have been escalated to software engineering right away.  My trip to see the Genius was, I believe, a waste of time for both me and Apple regarding this issue.  Diagnosis of this type of problem is well beyond the Genius’ knowledge and job.  The Genius did a very good job doing what he could within the scope of his job.  He just couldn’t solve this problem and had no one within Apple to which he had access for help.
However, that initial consult with the engineer was a bit feeble.  Not only could I not talk to him/her directly, his/her focus was still working with the ‘Black Box' approach.  Having Analyst ask me to do stuff like restore the Phone was more like trying to find a 'work around' than 'identifying the real problem.'  Maybe restoring the phone was going to fix some corrupted data on the phone sidesteping the real problem, the handling of this condition.  The engineer did listen to the fact that I had restored the test phone, the 5s, and only added the use of my Apple ID.  Duh, been there!!!
Having been an previous owner of a software development company that I started in 1980 and retired in 2001, I can tell you that using the 'Black Box' method of debugging is extremely inefficient.  Instead, having access to an ‘Activity Manager’ type app to identify in real time what process was blowing up the data flow would have saved me a lost afternoon at the Apple store and hours on the phone with tech support.
Ironically, I may have stumbled onto a "work around" solution short of turning off Cell Data that stopped the excessive Cell Data usage and consequential battery drain.  Just prior to leaving the Apple Store, I used one of their Macs to log in my Apple ID on the id.apple.com website to ‘Manage my Apple ID’, I was forced to upgrade the security level of my password.  Afterward, my cell data usage seemed to drop dramatically.
I told the AppleCare Senior Analyst that I may have stumbled onto a workaround and I suggested that I give it a couple of days of monitoring.  We'd talk then and I would have results to report.  She agreed.
Sure enough, my Document & Sync usage was back to normal, about 1/2 Mb per day.  Am I happy that the excessive Cell Data usage has stopped?  You bet!  But, there was no intuitive reason that an end user would know to log in on the ID website to unknowingly solve this problem.  As I use to say to my employees, that is not the ‘Macintosh Way.’  And, rebooting the the 'Microsoft Way.'
When I reported my findings to the Analyst, we both concluded that data usage was back to normal.  She did report to me that the engineer did provide a laundry list of suggested activities to help solve the problem.  Remarkably, they were everything that I had already done and were pretty much what the Analyst and the Genius tried to do.  All reasonable tasks.  But clearly, the engineer hadn't even ready the notes on the case before responding.  And, none of the things suggested would have uncovered the real problem, likely a logic bug in iOS.
My advice now is to have the software engineering team rule out that there was an unresolvable state that a background process was fiercely trying to handle.  The iOS does not seem to know how to intervene and prompt the user with a requirement to upgrade their password.  If this does end up being the case, I would call it a logic bug, a perpetual exception that is not being handled properly.
Anyway, I hope this helps you.

  • IOS 4.2.1 + 3G data = hot phone & extremely rapid battery drain

    Anyone else having this issue?
Since "upgrading" to iOS 4.2.1 on the weekend, it seems anytime I try to use the phone for data over 3G, it'll heat up like crazy and I can watch the battery drain in front of my eyes.
Everything else works fine including data over WiFi aside from some apps quitting abruptly without any transition effects.
I've reset and just finished Restoring. Less than a minute after I turn off WiFi and use any kind of data, the phone heats up and my battery % actually went down while connected to my Mac Pro.

    Donovan,
just wanted to share my experience... I too updated to 4.2.1 the other day and running on Rogers network. I noticed that the 3G data seems to be the culprit. Its consistantly downloading data! I can only imagine what Rogers is going through if all iphone 3G's are having this issue :s... I just turned off cellular data and running some tests, later tonight going to try a full restore to see what that will do...
    keep you posted.

  • IOS 8.1 installed yesterday has spoilt my iPad 2! There are no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is now sluggish, juddery and strange, battery is draining fast and it no longer security locks when put to sleep.

I am so cross because iOS 8.1 installed yesterday has ruined my iPad 2! There are now no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is slow, juddery and strange, the battery is draining fast and the iPad no longer security locks when put to sleep.  I have checked all the settings, done a number of resets and really wish I hadn't bothered and stayed with iOS 7 when it all worked like a dream.  I thought that by waiting until 8.1, teething problems would have been fixed and I am just horrified that there is no going back!  I am not the only iPad owner that has this set of problems so why didn't you warn us Apple!  What are you going to do to help us?  I do not want to be forced into buying a newer version of iPad because you broke this one!

In spite of the fact that you said you checked the settings, I still believe that you have system sounds muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

AS for your other issues, have you done any other troubleshooting like resetting your iPad, resetting all settings or doing a complete factory reset?

  • Anyone having same problem? I phone 4 after updating to Vers.5.1.1. battery cannot be 100% full charge, always stop at 99% and battery drains off fast too :(

Anyone having same problem? I phone 4 after updating to Vers.5.1.1. battery cannot be 100% full charge, always stop at 99% and battery drains off fast too

I had major issues with the iPhone 4s battery, however it’s resolved.
The tech who set the phone up at the Apple store did so with little training.
if you have a mobile me account. First go and move all your data to the cloud by going on your computer and logging in at me.com/move. The cloud has replaced mobile me, so there is no need for those two accounts
Also make sure that for any of your email accounts you set them up to fetch, not push. My tech person set them all to have the email servers push data to the phone. The new iphone4s antenna is extremely strong so it will continually try to access stuff that is pushed–***** a lot of battery life doing this. It makes it worse if you have exchange 2010 accounts. Something about changes made to exchange really suck battery life from devices that access such accounts.
turning of locator and the push notifications from facebook--they have a lot!

    Hi Tarun 49,
If you are having issues with your iPhone such as you describe, you may want to try some things to troubleshoot.
First, quit all running applications and test again -
iOS: Force an app to close
Next, I would try restarting the iPhone -
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
If the issue is still present, you may want to restore the iPhone as a new device -
iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

sir since update of ios 8.1.2 i got serious battery problem on 3g 4.30 hrs my battery gets low and sometimes serious net probelms please give an update for this issue its not alone me my friends too getting many problem commonly battery problem please can this be resolved
its not related to any hardware because last year april i got replacement new phone from apple and i maintained it well...!

Probably apps running in the background are causing this, sometimes Mail get's stuck connecting to the mail server, or some social media app like Facebook can also be a reason for prolonged background activity.
Try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose any data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches.
If this does not help, setting it up as new device would be the next step:

  • IPhone 5 Continued Problems - Unable to Sync and Battery Drain

It seems that my iPhone 5 went to crap after the last iOS 6.1.2 update.
Battery life took a turn for the worse. No consistency in usage and standby time and battery drain.
But now, for some reason and I don't know if it's iTunes, I have been unable to sync and back-up for two weeks now. After going through all the syncing steps, all 7, it kicks back and error message: "iTunes could not back up the iPhone "My Name" because an error occurred."
    No error code. Nothing.
Any ideas what I can do to fix it?

I got a new iPhone 5 about 3 weeks ago. I notice that from time to time in my pocket it heats up high enough I can feel it trough the material, but not as to burn.  I read in a post in this fuorum that this hapened for some iPhones after they updated to the new IOS either when is recharging or some blame it on heavy gaming. Mine was not recharging and no game apps open, just the usual iTunes, Messages and phone as usual when I carry it. It happens about every other day, I can feel it through my pocket and soeme times when I am holding it it is quite hot. After a couple of minutes it seem to cool off again. it just does not seem right. (Im posteing in different discussion to see where I get an answer before taking it to the geniuses )
PS: Dave049 I'll try your suggestion and try re-adjusting the SIM card . if it works I let you all know. thaks for the idea

  • Ios 6.1.2 on my 3gs that really slowly with chinese typing keyboard. And battery run out so fasttttttttt!!!!!

I just wanna say ios 6.1.2 on my 3gs that really slowly with chinese typing keyboard. And battery run out so fasttttttttt!!!!!
do you guys feel the same ?????

Same here. My 32GB iPhone 3GS works great under iOS 6.1.3. Since I am the original owner of the phone, purchased in July of 2009 and it is long out of contract with AT&T, I had AT&T unlock the phone (not jail break) and my son now uses it on T-Mobile. He has a non-data pay as you go plan so he must be on WIFI to get data, but his school has it as do all his friends houses so it is no real issue. Also very cheap. Amazingly good support by Apple that an almost 4 year old phone still runs the latest and greatest OS. Does not happen with Android. Heck, many new Android phones have an old version, incredible as that may be.
