IOS 6 fails to boot after update

New iPad (iPad 3), ATT-LTE, 64GB.
Updated over WIFI from work and after initial download and verification iPad rebooted and I got progress bar under white Apple.
iPad rebooted again after progress bar completed, but now iPad boots with white Apple logo and progress bar which has remained empty after sitting for 30+ minutes.  It appears that nothing is happening at this point, but I'm afraid to reboot in the middle of an update.
iPhone 4 successfully updated to IOS 6 during the same period and rebooted fine and is running IOS 6.
David

Plugged the iPad into my MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion) running iTunes 10.7 with the progress bar still showing no progress.  iTunes displayed:
iTunes could not connect to the iPad "XXXXXXXXXXX" because it is locked with a passcode.  You must enter your passcode on the iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
Rather difficult to do when the iPad is stuck booting.  I'm afraid to turn it off and reboot though.
Went ahead and made Genius bar appointment for tonight after work in case I can't clear it by then.

  • G41 Fails to boot after updating BIOS

I hope that somebody has some suggestions, and thank you in advance.
I am helping out a friend who has inherited a 2881-22U.  I have managed to successfully upgrade to an 120GB HD and copy the Recovery partition to the drive.  (Hey, you use what you can in education).  I have gone through the reinstall process successfully several times, and have worked for two weeks with several test WinXP loads so I know that the system works properly.
In checking the support website, of course, I noticed that there was a BIOS update (1XET57WW) and so I did the 1xuj15us.exe non-diskette update.  It successfully completed and then rebooted automatically.  Windows then failed to load - it hangs during the load process.  With trying to boot in Safe Mode & with logging, it would appear that the system hangs after loading drivers\mup.sys (normal configuration) or drivers\agpcpq.sys (safe mode).
If I press the Access IBM button, the recovery partition (IBM Rescue and Recovery) software runs OK, and when if I select "Restore factory contents", it properly completes the format & copy, reboots, does the first automated batch file sequence, reboots and then hangs (at the same place as described above, never getting to SysPrep).
If I put the original 30GB drive back in, it also fails loading Windows XP at the same spot, now that the BIOS has changed.
The system was previously upgraded to 1GB years ago. The system was purchased in January 2005.   The hardware diagnostics pass OK.
Thoughts on what's wrong and possible remedies:
Is there some BIOS setting that got changed that I am not understanding?
Is the BIOS update somehow bad (even though the recovery partition software runs OK)?
Was the recovery partition image upgraded as well when the BIOS was updated?  If so, what is the specific part number to get the revised image?
Is there some way I can get a BIOS image rollback to an older version?
    Thanks for any responses.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Solved the problem:
Got the 1xuj15ud.exe diskette BIOS update and got it transferred to a USB flash drive (kind of hard to use a diskette when the system does not have a floppy drive).
Did the update.  Reset the BIOS settings again.  Voilà, Windows starts loading again.
Why I needed to reflash again, I dunno... Didn't have any sort of error message after the first flash.  Certainly wasn't resetting the BIOS settings to default - already did that the first time around.

  • Mac won't boot after updating to OSX 10.6.4

I am on my 3rd Mac that won't boot after updating to OSX 10.6.4. One MacBook Pro and two iMacs. I fixed one but the last two are getting the better of me. HD is not fried. Have tried every keyboard shortcut on startup, Disk Warrior via. Target Disk, repairing permissions in single user mode. The machines will not boot off of a CD or DVD and it will not boot up in safe mode. Something in the startup files is preventing startup. I am suspecting Sophos antivirus. I tried to uninstall it and trash it but I think it's still blocking something. Any help would be appreciated.

Got it! Not sure if removing Sophos had anything to do with it but here's what I did.
    1) boot dead machine in Target Disk Mode (iMac)
    2) boot good machine off Snow Leopard disk (MacBook)
    3) install OS to dead machine- I found this next part very curious. When the install was complete the MacBook restarted as the iMac.
    4) ran software updates
    5) shut down MacBook then shut down iMac
    6) rebooted iMac- all was good
I actually did this twice because a co-worker had the exact same problem on her MacBook Pro. Got both fixed today.
    Thanks everyone for your help!

  • Sunfire X4150 fails to Boot after ILOM update to 3.0.3.30

After update from ELOM to ILOM and during update of ILOM from 2.0.2.6 to 3.0.3.30, system shutdown, and no boot anymore.
Turning on the system, later, I get the following erro, analysing the SP event log:
    ID = 29 : 06/23/2009 : 15:46:11 : System Firmware Error : sensor number = 0x00 : BIOS corruption detected
The SP had gracefull update, but BIOS seems to be corrupted.
Any suggestions, please? How can I recover BIOS, or even, make the system work again?
    Bruno Simioni

    [SOLVED]
Downgrading the SP and consecutively the BIOS, server is online again.
Download SP and BIOS Firmware from Sun Fire X4150 & X4250 Software Supplemental 2.2.2, at Sunfire x4150 server downloads page, and, downgrade the 3.0.3.30 SP/BIOS to 2.2.2 version.
I really hope that an future version of 3.0 Tools and Drivers DVD makes Sunfire x4150 works fine.

  • Restored 10.6 OS from CD and fails to Boot after Combo upgrade

I have a clean install of Lion on my internal drive and an external clone of the HD from the previous Snow Leopard install. The Clone worked until I updated via the latest auto update. I have App's and other settings to transfer to Lion from this clone so want to get it working so I can ensure all the App's are upgraded to work on Lion or are deleted.
After the external drive failed to boot I reinstalled the system from my Snow Leopard Install CD, not the 24-inch iMac (Mid 2007) restore CD.
I then used Auto updater to install the combo and other updates to 10.6.8 this booted fine until I upgraded Safari 5.1 and Java - the last items that came up on the software updater. Upon restart, the boot failed in the last portion of the boot and at this point the Apple emblem went away and the round circle with diaginoal line apeared.
On starting with the option key down, the clone disk 10.6.8 shows as being available, along with the internal Drive, for booting.
Starting with "command + S" gets through to the last line of the process then states "waiting on Root"
When compaired to a Snow OS that boots OK it is the last line of code before the curser is ready for entering a command.
Can anyone tell me what to look for or how to repair this error so that I can get my data across to Lion. Thanks

Well, in case anyone else has a similar problem I managed to fix the system by the following process:
I reinstalled 10.6.0 from the retail Snow Leopard CD. The drive Booted OK but I needed to be upgraded to 10.6.8 to use the migration tool so I then upgraded using the Software Update utility. Boot failed again at this point and could not be fixed by anything I did.
I then reinstalled 10.6.0 from the CD to try again, but the HD would not boot this time around.
I downloaded CleanApp by Synium Software (http://www.syniumsoftware.com/cleanapp/) on a commendation from the famous eBook, "Take Control of installing Lion" by Joe Kissell of TidBits. I used this from my Lion HD to remove all orphan files, PPC files and Apps, and other junk. Snow Leapard still not Booting after repairs by various disk repair utilities including Apples.
I Booted from my internal HD using Lion and ran SuperDuper to make a new Clone of the failed HD on a second external HD. Took a day and a night to run while I was at work, but the new clone would not boot at this stage so I ran SuperDuper again using the "Smart Update Backup" option. This just adds changed files or missing files to the clone. At the end of this process I had a running Clone that would boot on 10.6.0.
I Booted from the second Clone and used the Software Update utility then to up grade in the two stages the Auto system used to bring my OS up to 10.6.8. This was successful and I had a Bootable Snow Leopard with no old Apps from which to Migrate my data.

  • Macbook Pro won't boot after update

I have a macbook pro3,1 (early 2008) that I received from someone else.  When I received it, it had os x 10.8.3 installed. Initially I tried to update it to maverick, but after it rebooted it would not boot, just continued to reboot over and over.  I then was able to boot into restore mode and do a repair on the disk. After that I was able to boot into 10.8.3.
I decided to update to 10.8.5, and received the same results as before. This time I was unable to restore with a disk repair.
I also created a bootable usb with Mavericks on it. Again, it will not boot to allow an install.
I was able to boot into safe mode, but that did not fix the installation. I tried repartitioning the hard drive and install mavericks on the new partition, but that failed also.
After looking at the logs, I see that there is a kernel panic that happens.  Everytime I boot normally, it seems to get just before the login screen before it reboots.  Below is the log.

I received the macbook from someone else without installation disks. Also, when try to do a re-install of 10.8.3 from the internet in restore mode, it tells me that the account does not match the one the purchase was made from.  I would rather not run 10.8.3 anyway if I could install mavericks.
Below is the system information for the macbook
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.4 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          4 MB
      Memory:          2 GB
      Bus Speed:          800 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MBP31.0070.B07
      SMC Version (system):          1.16f11
      Serial Number (system):          W87422HUYAM
      Hardware UUID:          00000000-0000-1000-8000-001B63A5B553
I have tried to reset nvram as well as smc with no result.
I have also done a extended apple hardware test which found no errors.
The macbook does have a bad battery, so I have tried booting without the battery.  The results did not change.
I have searched the internet for the kernel panic error and can not find a consistent issue for macbook pros.  Some say it is a hardware problem.  Others say it is an install problem.  What does not make sense to me is if it is hardware problem, why was I able to restore it back once and get it to boot consistently.  It seems to be directly the result of updating the software.
I also read that 10.8.5 consistently had boot problems upon install, so I tried re-installing the combo update for 10.8.5
I feel like I have exhausted almost all the resources except taking it to the genius bar.
Please let me know if you can help.
    Thanks,

    bereanmh,
since your MacBook Pro didn’t originally have Mountain Lion installed at the factory, the former owner erred in leaving it on its internal disk when transferring it to you; Mountain Lion is non-transferable when sourced from the Mac App Store. The former owner should rather have provided you with its original pair of grey installation discs, which hold its original version of Mac OS X, its iLife apps, and its model-specific Apple Hardware Test. If you didn’t receive these discs, you can contact Apple directly to purchase a replacement pair. (They’re not available in Apple stores.)
That being stated, regarding the panic report above, the prime suspect is that NullCPUPowerManagement kernel extension — try uninstalling it to see if that makes a difference.

  • Arch fails to boot after installation (BIOS mode)

I finished my Arch installation, following the Beginner's Guide, and once I unmounted the partitions and rebooted, GRUB failed to boot into Arch. I'm not exactly sure what the problem is though. Basically what happens is I power on the machine, the Dell splash screen comes up, GRUB loads, I choose
Arch Linux, with Linux core repo kernel
the kernel and ramdisk attempt to load, then some message about "recovering journal" appears, and then I return back to the Dell splash screen. The same thing happens even if I choose the second option
Arch Linux, with Linux core repo kernel (Fallback initramfs)
However, when I choose to boot Win XP everything boots just fine. My apologies for the quality of the videos and pictures.
Here's a video of what happens:
    http://youtu.be/uC96kX6iTjI
I suspect this has to do with this error I got when I generated the "grub.cfg". Although I'm not entirely sure because my understanding is that this error would affect booting Win XP which in fact boots perfectly fine.
Error (and no I'm not using any lvm volumes)

I believe these are the portions of the "grub.cfg" that load Arch and Win XP. I got these by pressing "e" while on their menu entry in the GRUB bootloader.

Any idea how I can fix this? Any help is greatly appreciated and please be patient, I know, I'm a noob.
    * I'm not sure if this is of any significance but I had a problem very similar to this when trying to get the Arch install to boot via usb (this computer doesn't have CD/DVD drive). I solved it by following this excerpt from the Beginner's Guide.
    Troubleshooting boot problems
If you are using an Intel video chipset and the screen goes blank during the boot process, the problem is likely an issue with Kernel Mode Setting. A possible workaround may be achieved by rebooting and pressing
    e
over the entry that you are trying to boot (i686 or x86_64). At the end of the string type
    nomodeset
    and press
    Enter
Here's a video of what it looked like:
    http://youtu.be/vXRcbU0zdto
    The computer specs:
OS: Windows XP Professional 32 bit Version 2002 Service Pack 3
    CPU: Intel Pentium 4 @ 3.00 GHz
    RAM: 2 GB DDR2
    HDD: 80 GB

    Hi,
    why did you not try adding nomodeset with the regular boot? During the net-install no video drivers will be installed;
you have to install them after reboot after installing xorg. The (video)problem you had with booting from usb is still
    present.

  • ColdFusion 8 Fails to start after update Java for Mac OSX 10.5 Update 4

I have been using ColdFusion on a Mac for years. Now CF fails to start after I updated Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4. I usually start by typing in the terminal window sudo /Applications/ColdFusion8/bin/ColdFusion start.
There is a crash report but I don't know how to read it. See attached.
Please help, I need this working for my job.
    Thanks...Colin

    Dear Craig,
Macbook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB RAM
I'm sure that this is 64-bit
    CF 8.0.1 Enterprise Build 3080
I had moved the Java SE 6 to the top in both Plugin and Applications. The
correct version is showing in the terminal window. See below.
Last login: Thu Jun 18 11:27:09 on ttys001
    Beta-4:~ Colin$ java -version
    java version "1.6.0_13"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_13-b03-211)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 11.3-b02-83, mixed mode)
    Beta-4:~ Colin$
CF will not start. I have the activity monitor open, and when I start CF you
see it in the activity monitor for a few seconds as it starts up. When the
message process is completed in the terminal window CF disappears in the
    activity monitor.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi, Colin,
My apologies but I forgot to ask 2 questions: (1) What kind of Mac you have
(Intel or PowerPC)? (2) What version of CF are you running and what installer
    did you choose (8 or 8.0.1, 32-bit, 64-bit, etc.)?
    To start, try the following:
    1. Normally you'd shut CF down first ... but that's not necessary for you
    2. Open Java Preferences again
    3. Select Java SE 6 and move it (drag) to the top spot in both section (Applet
    Plugin and Applications)
    4. Open Terminal
    5. Type java -version (you should see 1.6.0_13 as the new version)
    6. Try to start CF again
This may not work (I've had issues with it) but it's technically how it's
supposed to work. With the Java Preferences utility, you're visually setting a
default JVM (you can do it with commands in Terminal but this is much faster
    and easier).
If CF still won't start, look for the jvm.config file in your CF application
    folder (try /Applications/ColdFusion8/bin or
    /Applications/ColdFusion8/runtime/bin -- the latter is where a jvm.config file
is on my machine for a particular version of CF that's installed similar to
yours). You can override the JVM in this file but, hopefully, that won't be
    necessary!
    Best,
    Craig

  • My MBP doesnt boot after update / Prohibition sign flashes twice and then goes straight to OX Utilities

    Hello all,
I thought I would never be here, but I am.
After updating iTunes and Memory Clean in App Store (nothing unusual) my MAC stopped booting properly.
    MBP / early 2011 / Mountain Lion
It shows the Apple logo flashing twice the prohibiting sign (cancel circle), after that it goes straight to the OS X Utilities.
    Note:
    - It recognizes the HD and the Recovery partition.
    - Verify permission shows a lot of /Applications/iTunes issues, but I have repaired like 5 times and still showing issues.
    - Hardware test passed OK.
    - Repair disk, no issues.
    - Shift (safe mode) doesn't work (lot of flashing ? folder, apple logo, etc).
    - PRAM restarted, twice.
I can't reinstall or launch the ML installer, when I go trough the install process which mandatory requires Internet connection and AppStore login, it states: This item is temporarily unavailable. Try again later.
Please help me, I'm desperate this is my production machine and I'm travelling.
    What I'm missing?

You cannot reinstall Mountain Lion from the App Store, but you can install Mavericks which is free and will run on your computer. Here's what you do:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Macbook pro won't boot after update to 10.6.8

    Hi everyone,
Yesterday I bought an used macbook pro (15 inch early 2008). When looking at it, it was in good shape and the previous owner just did a fresh install of snow leopard. I took it home and whas happy with it. In the first two hours of using it, everything was fine. After installing the update to 10.6.8 my macbook needed to be shut down.. After shutting down it started up again but the screen stayed black. I had no idea why. So I rebooted it by pressing the power button. The same problem remained, it seemed to start up (I could hear the harddrive and fan) but it didn't boot into Mac Os. After a couple of attempts, it now shutsdown immediatly after pressing the powerbutton (3 seconds after). No chime or nothing.
At first I thought this would only be a software problem, because the problem started immediatly after updating. So I put in my snow leopard dvd to boot into that, but I can't even get it to boot into the install dvd. Because it shuts down immediatly after pressing the power button. Then I started suspecting an hardware failure, which would be a very big coincidence to show up immediatly after booting up. These are the things I have tried so far, to no avail:
    - Plugging of the power cord and removing the battery, then pressing and holding the powerbutton for at least 5 sec
    - Holding the option, command, P and R keys during boot.
    - Replacing the memory
    - Replacing the hard drive
    - Unplugging the super drive
    - Starting up holding the d key
At a certain point I was hoping that It would be an harddrive or memory problem. I replaced both with examples I know for sure they are working. But still the same problem; macbook shuts down  almostimmedialty after pressing the power button.
There is no warrany anymore, and technical support would cost me 49 euros per incident.. to probably hear that the macbook is beyond repair. I feel i have just thrown away 300 euro's for an nightmare experience. Does anybody now anything to try, i'm really desperate here

After installing the update to 10.6.8
    What update was that?
So I put in my snow leopard dvd to boot into that, but I can't even get it to boot into the install dvd.
Did the previous owner also give you the discs that originally came with the computer?  Those are what you need to troubleshoot with.  You also need disc 1 to run the Apple Hardware Test.
There is no warrany anymore, and technical support would cost me 49 euros per incident..
Apple Store and AASP diagnostic testings are free.  Suggest that you take full advantage of it.  This way you can find out exactly what is wrong with your computer.  Post back here with the diagnosis and someone will post DIY repair sites.

  • IMac 24" Intel Core 2 black display on boot after update to 10.6.7

    Help!
After updating software to 10.6.7, my iMac won't display anything but a black screen after booting, the system seems to be working because you can figure out that the list of users is there to start up (keyboard & sounds) but no display. Things I have already tried: Reset PRAM and SMC and nothing. It's black.
I will appreciate any kind of help.
    Thanks to all
    Rodrigo

I'm having the same problem. I took my iMac to a genius bar and they couldn't help. Apple needs to address this.

  • Flame won't boot after update (1.4)

    Hello,
I was running nightly FFOS 1.4 on my Flame for last month.
Today, after update and reboot, phone boots into recovery mode.
It looks like fastboot (I can see only ThunderSoft(r) logo) but I can't see phone listed with fastboot command.
It does, however, respond through adb.
Commands like adb shell are not limited.
What should I do now? I rather ask for help now, since I have already broken my zte -.-
This time I didn't do anything strange to it so.. Will be glad for any response. Thank you

    fastboot mode: power button + volume-down button for 10 ~ 20 seconds
    recovery mode: power button + volume-up button for 10 ~ 20 seconds
firmware update is much easier in linux rather than windows.
flame phone should be in unplugged and power-off state.

  • Mac Mini won't boot after update

I have a Mac Mini that won't boot after the most recent software update. Since the Mini has only a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, a number of the usual options (hold down shift, etc.) won't work. I've tried a reset, also no luck. At the moment, I can't locate my Tiger install CD either.
When holding the power button on during boot, I get a series of flashes from the status light on the front (a set of very rapid flashes, followed by a slower set, followed by a slow set) but no startup chime, or fan, or video. My display and power source are both known-good (work fine with my Powerbook)
Any suggestions, other than buying a hardwired keyboard/mouse?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The 'newer version of OS X" error occurs because the installer on the DVD you have booted to has by default been set to update the version of MacOS on the hard drive, which of course it can't do because the version of MacOS it is installing is newer. The only way to install in this situation is to select a different option. However, that isn't what you want to do at this point, because as it says, you'll loose your data if you do an 'erase and install'.
Instead, you should see menus at the top of the screen when it's booted to that install disk. Click the Utilities menu, select Disk Utility, and then click the top entry for the internal hard drive on the left. Once done, click on the 'Repair Disk' button (not Repair Permissions). This will test the drive to make sure it's OK. If it reports errors, and then reports 'error or exit' with the drive not repaired, you will either need a 3rd party application such as Alsoft's Disk Warrior, or to perform an erase and install (which of course you don't want to do at this point because your data is not backed up).
If the Repair Disk process completes with no errors, next select Repair Permissions, and let that process complete, then reboot the system as normal to see if you can now access the drive.
