IOS 6 upgrade corrupts default email account?

I'm seeing a pattern where upgrading to iOS 6 creates a problem where it appears the default email account becomes unresponsive and cannot log in to retrieve email, but can send just fine.  I know others have experienced this, has anyone found a solution other than to nuke the email account and recreate it?  thanks!

  • Has anyone found a solution to the issue of default email account on iPhone continually changing?

I am seeing an irritating problem with the default mail account, calendar and contacts list on my iPhone 4.
Every so often (I think it happens randomly after syncing or even just connecting the iPhone to my iMac without syncing) I notice that some or all of my default email account, calendar and contacts list have changed away from my desired default (which is my Exchange account).
The iPhone is running iOS 4.3.5 (8L1) and I'm using iTunes 10.4.1 on my iMac.
I found this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1639451 dating back 2 years to the days of iOS 2.1 without any solution. Googling hasn't helped me find any answers yet.
I have 5 accounts set up on the iPhone - a MobileMe "Find my phone" account that's only used for that purpose, not email, a GMail account, a couple of vanilla IMAP accounts and my main, Exchange 2010-based account that I use for mail, contacts and calendar.
Most frequently after a change I find that the default email has switched to the GMail account, the calendar and contacts lists have switched to my iPhone and most of my Exchange account mail folders are empty and have to re-sync when I tap on them.
I know from Googling that other people have been seeing similar issues.
Has anyone found a workaround or solution?

Has no one found any solutions to this?
Or at least what causes it (so that it might be avoided)?
I find it difficult to believe this issue has existed so long in iOS without being addressed!

  • Why is Gmail the default email account in iOS 7?

When I open iOS 7 Mail (after quitting it) it automatically opens my Gmail account.  I have tried using Setting to change the default email and I have tried reordering the accounts in the Inbox window but nothing works.

I don't know. Mine generally opens in whichever account it was in when I closed it (including All Mailboxes).

  • Mobile Me was my default email account, so if I did any emailing like trying to send a photo directly from iphoto it would send from the mobile me address.  Is there a way to set a different default email account now that mobile me is gone?

We used Mobile Me for our default email.  So if you answered an ad from a site or tried to send a photo directly from iphoto, it would use the mobile me account. Now that its gone, can I set a different address as my default?

WEll, MobileMe has been moved & still works in iCloud.
Did you setrup an iCloud account?
Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
MAKE A NEW ACCOUNT - DO NOT TRY TO ALTER YOUR EXISTING ACCOUNT.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
    • Server name: imap.mail.me.com
    • SSL Required: Yes
    • Port: 993
    • Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    • Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
    • Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
    • SSL Required: Yes
    • Port: 587
    • SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
    • Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    • Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.

  • How to set default email account in Apple Mail for Yosemite?

For some reason, after my upgrade to Yosemite my default accounts are no longer selected as default. I am now sending from an account I only receive email to, and have to change it with every single email I compose. Mavericks didn't do this.
Has anyone had a similar situation with multiple email accounts in Apple Mail? Any idea on how to force a default?

If you go to Preferences > Composing there is a dropbox for "Send new messages from:"

  • Default email account when using profiles

We have started allowing employees to use their personal iPhones for work.  To ensure proper setup and to prevent tinkering with settings, we are using the iPhone Configuration Utility to load profiles onto the devices that setup the Exchange account(s) and enforce some security settings and restrictions.
Here's where we're running into an issue:
After loading the profile and setting up the Exchange email, the only option available under "Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Default Account" is the employee's personal email account.  The Exchange account(s) don't appear as an option.
    Now,
If we setup the Exchange accounts manually on the device (meaning, without using a profile and the iPhone Configuration Utility) all the accounts are available to select from under the "Default Account" setting.
I tried contacting Apple support about the issue- in short, I talked to a second level support tech who I could barely understand and communicate with and all he did was run through the standard "clear all settings, reboot and set it up again.  After about 3 or 4 settings resets and full device erases with the same issue occuring each time I setup the profile again, I gave up trying.
I have confirmed that it is an issue on the iPhone 4, 4S and 5 running iOS 5.1 and iOS 6
Is there anyone who's encountered this and/or might know enough about the software innerworkings to help determine a cause and/or solution?
    Thanks for your time,
    ~Mark

Mark, I just tried this on the new iPad mini I have and wasn't able to repeat it.   I'm using the Windows version of IPCU 3.6.0.295.  After adding the Exchange account with IPCU ( I always give the account a logical name in        setup to distinguish it from any other device accounts), under calendars, default, I got the device calendar and the Exchange Calendar.  I then removed the profile, setup exchange manually and found that the default calendar choice was no longer available.  Is this the issue you are seeing?

  • 10.10.2 changes default email account

Since the 10.10.2 upgrade mail has changed the account it selects for default when I send a message. It seems to have defaulted to the order in the system preferences internet account panel. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to drag an account to the top, and I am a little reluctant to delete and read accounts in hope that the readied accounts will go to the bottom of the list.

    Hey waldhaus1,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, you want to change what the default account in Mail is. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
Mac OS X: Mail - How to change the default account and "From" address
Mac OS X 10.2 and later
The "From" address for a new message will generally be the same as the "To" address of the message that is currently selected. If no message is selected, then the "From" address associated with the currently selected mailbox will be used, if there is one. Otherwise, the default "From" address will be used as described above.
Changing the send account on a per-message basis
When two or more email accounts are set up in Mail, the Account pop-up menu appears in the New Message window. You can use this menu to select an email account other than the default.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a good one,
    Mario

  • Can't delete "old" default email account

Prior to OS4, I had three email accounts. Primary was on my own mail server. When all my emails began to originate out of a gMail account, I deleted all accounts but my own email account from my iPhone. New emails are STILL sent from the gMail account.
My understanding is that email should be sent by the default account, but this is not the case. It's coming from a deleted account. How do I rip out every vestige of every account and start with a single account? It's apparent that Apple has gone off in some other direction that doesn't include user convenience.

Same problem here. iPhone won't release gmail as default (all emails come from my gmail still) even though preferences say a different email is selected as default.

  • IOS Signature Settings for Multiple Email Accounts causes crashes and errors

    Hello Everyone,
I've been having troubles with iOS email signature for severals years from iOS 4 (?) through iOS 7 on everything ranging from an iPad2, iPad3, IPad Air, and various iPhones.  I'm currently on an iPad Air 128GB WiFi running iOS 7.1.2.
I have about 12 email accounts. I have it set to a unique signature per account. Whenever I try to scroll the list of signatures in the settings app, it will often have greyed out areas where a signature is supposed to be (especially after adding a new account). Other accounts will blur together and overlap each other. Very often the whole settings app crashes. Once the crashes start, they happen more frequently and you basically have to Power Off and Restart the iPad to get it back to a somewhat stable state.
I've come to accept that the Mail Signatures is broken and not stable. But maybe I'm just doing it wrong. So, I ask you great and wonderful Apple Community: Any suggestions? Or just keep on like I've been doing for the last several years?
    Thank you!
    Paul Holje

this crash has been present since ios6 (apparently). it's apparently caused by a buffer overflow (i've not yet examined the crash files i've been generating) because the engineers never tested use cases such as yours or mine.
a painful workaround is to disable all your email accounts but one, edit its signature, then disable it, and enable the next one, and so on. ios saves the correct signature for each account and the settings app crash does not occur.
    hope this helps

  • How do I stop Mail being my default email account?

When I click on an email address on a web page, Mail opens up. I'd prefer
using Gmail. Is there a way to do that, without having to copy the email address, and opening another browser?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hello Paul.
Are you aware that you can access your Gmail account as a POP account with an email client such as the Mail.app?
The default email reader selection with Mail is for just that - your chosen email reader and a browser used to access an email account via webmail is not considered an email reader but there is a work around with this.

  • Setting Comcast as Default Email account Wind 8.1

How do I set up comcast as default email in new computer w/ windows 8.1?

OK I have a Dell laptop with 8.1 on it.  As near as I can tell, the Mail app will use the email account address you use to sign in to the computer with.  It's intended to use your Microsoft account, if you have one.  Now this is just a guess on my part------set up your computer to use the Comcast email address as the sign in credentials, and that should be the default email address you send from when you click on a "mail-to" link.  I can't find any setting in the Windows  Mail 8.1 app that lets you set any account as the default sending address.
When you send it will use whatever account you are looking at that you have set up in it.

  • Changing default email account in iPhone mail

    Hello,
I have initially setup my Mail with my "primary" .mac email address, but the problem is that any email I reply to on my iPhone uses that email account & alias, even if the email was sent to another email alias provided my my .mac account. This does not happen on the Mac version of Mail.
How can I either have the iPhone version of Mail use the same email alias for sent messages depending on which alias the incoming mail was sent to?
I tried changing the default email alias in Mail Settings but did not get a successful authentification. But if I can change the default email alias for sent messages, that would be OK too.
    Thanks
    Lex.

I've had this question for a while myself.
I do have my iPhone IMAP'd to a gmail account. In that gmail account I have set up various address that I send from, and I have setup Gmail to reply to the address an email was sent to. From within Gmail, I can set any of my addresses in the FROM field when I reply or compose an email. I am using Gmail as a funnel to catch all mail I get from various accounts, and I wish to use this Gmail funnel as my only account to check on my iPhone.
On my Mac Mail on my desktop, I can accomplish what I want by having multiple accounts setup but then setting them as OFFLINE. This prevents Mac Mail from retrieving duplicate messages from multiple accounts, but it allows me to change the address in the FROM field of any message when I reply or compose.
On my iPhone, the only way to change the address in my FROM field is to have an active account online on the phone. Once I turn an account OFF, that address is no longer available in the FROM field. And the mail that comes in from Gmail does not automatically set the FROM to be the same as the address the mail was sent to, despite having that setup at Gmail.
Is there any way to have the iPhone do what Mac Mail does, allowing me to set an address in the FROM field without having to have that address set up as an active account on the phone?
    Any workaround for this?
