Then either use iOS 7.0.4 on the device or update to iOS 8.1.  Those are your current choices.
FYI, did you make sure that it was not activation locked?  Use this link: Check Activation Lock Status - iCloud

  • Ios 6 music app on ios 7 (to fix genre issue)

I am no longer able to drill down from genre to artists songs in the genre and their albums with songs in that genre.  Apple has told me that is by design.  So I have lost that ability and some others here have said the same thing.
Is there a way to find and use the ios 6 music app under ios 7 somehow?  Else, I need to find a 3rd party app that will play the existing music (I don't want to download anything outside of itunes) and allow me to drill down from genre as ios 6's music app allowed me to do.
Any suggestions (incl. possible apps if I can't use ios 6 music app)?

I use, by the way, the windows app Tag & Rename.  Have been using it for years and highly recommend it if you are on the windows platform.  In order to get things to work properly I had to change tags in two ways for ios 7: (1) copy all my artist fields to album artists fields and (2) (unfortunately) pull out the data in the year field (which I moved to the comment field) since ios 7 now sorts by the year field as well.
That got the ios 7 music player to final list the stuff properly - at least as I drilled down from genre.  Still, the interface was at a minimum "wanting".  I found an inexpensive (not free) app - I think it was something like $3.99.  It was written and supported by two programmers - a 18 and 21 year old.  Still the interface is relatively clean and the gestures once learned make things easy to find out and change with a single finger - check it out: "Ecoute".  It does the job for me much better then ios 7's.
My only complaint is since I do not have album art or any other art associated with music as I am a composer and write my own material - I end up with 5 rows and 3 columns of icons with default icons.  But even that has an 'option' as you can get a textual list by taping on the top.  If you are at genres and the artist is showing, tapping on the top will list all the tracks in alphabetical order with times for that artist. If the albums are showing in the screen - tapping on the artist on the top will display all the tracks in alphabetical order with a line below them describing the album name.  And when you tap just on the album icon, you get just a list of the tracks.
Some other cool tapping and swiping actions....  easy to learn...

The iPad 1 can't run the newer operating systems. It'd be like trying to play a bluray disc in your 6 year old dvd player....it simply lacks the hardware to make the software run.
No suggestion about the camera, but given that Apple's attitude seems to be to focus more on the more mobile devices for photography (the iPhone and Touch cameras got features, the iPad and mini didn't), that is highly unlikely. You can tell Apple what you want, but you'd probably be money ahead to get a digital camera.
as to the photos, anything put on via iTunes has to come off via iTunes.Your main alternative would be to look for photo apps that offer file exchange that may give you more functionality.

  • Problem upgrading from ios 4.3.5 to ios 6.

    Hi all,
I'm trying to upgrade my wife's iphone 4 from ios 4.3.5 to ios 6, and I'm getting an error message I can't find a meaning for or a solution to.
I'm upgrading via iTunes because "over the air" isn't available to go from 4.3.5 to 6.
I've Synced the phone and taken a backup.
The download of ios6 works fine, but when I start the update it tries to do its own backup but at that point I get an error message "-5000" which says that the backup cannot be completed and that all information on the phone will be lost if I continue.
Now, as well as the iTunes backup, I've manually taken a copy of all her pictures/videos, & I know that if the worst happens, I can restore apps from the iTunes store & contacts from Outlook, so that's all OK.
However she's keen not to lose her message history, so my first question is can I be sure that if we proceeed with the update (and in so doing wipe the phone) that her messages (and contacts) can be restored from the backup?
The really strange thing is that I've successfully updated my own iPhone 4 and an iPad 2 using the same method without getting this error.
So my second question is what does this error message mean and what's causing it to happen?
I've checked all the software (iTunes 10.7 & Windows Vista (yea, I know!)) is up to date. I even tried removing and reinstalling iTunes but to no avail.
Because of the previous successful upgrades on other devices, I suspect that the problem is a setting on the phone itself, but I can't see any obvious differences between it now an mine before update.
    Anyone got any ideas?
Apologies for the long post, but I wanted to explain all the things I've tried so far.
BTW in case you're wondering, she didn't go from 4.3.5 to 5 because of some unexplained "0x" type error at the time, so we lived without it, but having accidentally 'lost' a couple of photos recently we're keen to get her using the iCloud backup in ios6 if nothing else.

I did, but neglected to come back and update this post.
It seems to have been an anti-virus software problem.
The PC I was having the problem on was using Avira, but the one where it worked was using Norton 360.
I removed Avira and replaced it with Norton, and the update went through fine.
I've no idea why Avira would cause that problem, but there it is.

  • I have a "company provided Ipad" now using IOS 6.1.3.  the company Will allow me to upgrade to IOS 7 but not to IOS 8.  Is that possible?

I have a "company provided Ipad" now using IOS 6.1.3.  the company Will allow me to upgrade to IOS 7 but not to IOS 8.  Is that possible?

No, since the iPad 2 is iOS 8 compatible it can only be updated to iOS 8.  Apple does not support upgrading to interim iOS versions, and removes those files from the servers when a new version is released.  The only path for that iPad 2 is iOS 8.0.2.

  • How come I can't update my iPad 1 to the new iOS 6 it says my iOS version 5.1.1 is the latest version?

How come I can't update my iPad 1 to the new iOS 6 it says my iOS version 5.1.1 is the latest version?

The iPad 1, coming up on three years since it was introduced, has been given two major and a number of minor upgrades to iOS, more than many tablet manufactures provide. The iPad 1's hardware just can't effectively support many of the features in iOS 6. So I don't think that it's particularly unfair for Apple to no longer provide updates. And yes, I do own and manage a number of iPad 1s.
    Regards.

  • Is there a way to downgrade from iOS 5.1.1 to iOS 4.1 without any unauthorised modifications (e.g. jailbreaking)?

I found this piece of information: http://osxdaily.com/2012/06/18/downgrade-ios-6-beta-to-ios-5/ Yes, it's about downgrading from iOS 6 beta, not iOS 6, but the way to downgrade to a previous version of iOS is basically the same.
I have an iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1.1 and an iPod touch 4 running iOS 5.1.1 as well. None of them is 'jailbroken'. I upgraded my iPod touch to iOS 6 for exploring it a bit more and reverted back to iOS 5.1.1. How? I did it the way stated by the website I mentioned above: just by Option-Clicking the 'Restore' button on iTunes and select the iOS 5.1.1 software. No need to enter recovery mode or DFU mode whatsoever.
In fact, Apple doesn't allow users to downgrade to a previous version of iOS: 'Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported.' (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694) The reason why I could downgrade from iOS 6 to iOS 5.1.1 may be, as the above website said, 'Typically you can’t downgrade iOS versions so easily, but because Apple is still signing iOS 5.1.1 this allows downgrading to commence with minimal effort.'
I was wondering whether I could revert all the way from iOS 5.1.1 to iOS 4.1 (the version that was shipped along with the launch of the iPod touch 4 in September 2010). (for experimental purposes)
I downloaded the iOS 4.1 (a list of iOS software: http://osxdaily.com/2010/10/30/download-ipod-touch-firmware-ipsw/) and tried Option-Clicking when restoring this iOS 4.1 — no luck. iTunes said 'This device is not eligible for the requested build'. And I did a bit of research and found that there are ways to downgrade from iOS 5.1.1 to iOS 4.1, but it seems you have to jailbreak the device, which is complicated and I don't want to do.
So, is there a way to downgrade from iOS 5.1.1 to iOS 4.1 without any unauthorised modifications (e.g. jailbreaking)? Thanks in advance.

No, downgrading from any version of iOS to an earlier version is not supported.

Attempt to restore your iOS device two more times. If the issue is still unresolved, the device may need service.
The "device may need service" means a hardware problem. In that case make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 7.1.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.
You can no longer update to iOS 6.x, or down grade the iOS.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and antivirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 7.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.
How to Upgrade to iOS 7
The iOS 7.0 update requires around 2.5 GB of storage space, so if your iPad is almost full, you may need to clear up some space. You can check your available space in Settings -> General -> Usage.
There are two ways to upgrade to iOS 7: You can use your Wi-Fi connection, or you can connect your iPad to your PC and update through iTunes. We'll go over each method.
    To upgrade using Wi-Fi:
Note: If your iPad's battery is under 50%, you will want to plug it into your charger while performing the update.
    Go into the iPad's Settings.
Locate and tap "General" from the menu on the left.
The second option from the top is "Software Update". Tap this to move into the update settings.
Tap "Download and Install". This will start the upgrade, which will take several minutes and will reboot your iPad during the process. If the Download and Install button is grayed out, trying clearing up some space. The space required by the update is mostly temporary, so you should gain most of it back after iOS 7 is installed.
Once the update is installed, you may have to run through the initial steps of setting up your iPad again. This is to account for new features and settings.
    To upgrade using iTunes:
First, connect your iPad to your PC or Mac using the cable provided when you purchased your device. This will allow iTunes to communicate with your iPad.
You will also need the latest version of iTunes. Don't worry, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch iTunes. Once it installs, you may be asked to setup iCloud by logging into your iTunes account. If you have a Mac, you may be prompted on whether or not you want to enable the Find my Mac feature.
Now you are ready to begin the process:
If you upgraded iTunes earlier, go ahead and launch it. (For many, it will launch automatically when you plug in your iPad.)
Once iTunes is launched, it should automatically detect that a new version of the operating system exists and prompt you to upgrade to it. Choose Cancel. Before updating, you will want to manually sync your iPad to make sure everything is up to date.
After canceling the dialog box, iTunes should automatically sync with your iPad.
If iTunes doesn't automatically sync, you can manually do it by selecting your iPad within iTunes, clicking on the File menu and choosing Sync iPad from the list.
After your iPad has been synced to iTunes, select your iPad within iTunes. You can find it on the left side menu under Devices.
From the iPad screen, click on the Update button.
After verifying that you want to update your iPad, the process will begin. It takes a few minutes to update the operating system during which time your iPad may reboot a few times.
After updating, you may be asked a few questions when your device finally boots back up. This is to account for new settings and features.

  • Just upgraded iPhone 4 from 4.2 ios to 6.1.3 ios now can't connect to internet

I just updated my friend's iPhone 4 from 4.2 ios to 6.1.3 ios  --  she had not updated it since she purchased it.  The uploads installed fine but now she can't access safari/internet and can't send pictures via text message.  She is strictly 3g with no wireless access at her home.  Could this be caused by the software upgrade?  If not, how/where do I start looking for the problem.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
