IOS 7.1 worse than 7 for 4s battery life

I took the bait on this latest update in hopes it would address some of the problems 4s users like myself have experienced.  Unfortunately the  low battery warning occurs much faster now. Locations services is off. Cellular Data is minimized as much as possible.  I wouldn't dare use the GPS without external power.  Version 7's difficult to read calendar and poor battery life were challenging.  Now the challenge is bigger. This was a highly functional phone for me before v.7.  I hope something can be done to help with this problem, because the community isn't exactly endorsing a phone upgrade as a reliable solution.

Thank you for the suggestion to use the Search bar. I wouldn't have thought of that.  Unfortunately, I had already made these adjustments when iOS 7 first appeared. They helped a little then, but I would gladly go back to the pre-iOS 7 days if I could.  I did disable the Time Zone and Usage features, but as my default mode has been to keep Location Services off to preserve my battery (because of draw of iOS 7),  I can't see that untoggling these two sub-features will make any differenence. Leaving iCloud off doesn't seem like a reasonable suggestion.  What is the point of the device if one has to disable so many features in order to be able to live with it? I can't imagine that was the designer's intention.

  • IPad 1st gen with iOS 5 is worse than Vista - Downgrade?

I have a 1st generation 3G iPad. I updated to ios 5. iOS 5 has rendered my iPad nearly unusable. Honestly, this is upgrade is WORSE than Vista. Apple should be ashamed of releasing a major OS upgrade that renders a whole generation of machines unusable.
Yes, I have tried nearly everything. I have "restored" and I have rebooted numerous times.
The thing that is the most frustrating about this is that before the ios5 update my iPad was the highest quality computing experience I had ever had. Now it is the WORST computing experience I have ever had. Every single application crashes. Typing is dead slow. The iPad hangs. Videos will not play or will play audio only, or will crash on load.
Again, I have restored, and rebooted numerous times. APPLE should be ashamed of this!!!!

iCloud does this from time to time. It usually is a result of a corrupt contact or calendar entry. Killed the battery and performance on my 3GS, 4, 4S, iPad (first gen), and even my MacBook Pro until I found the corrupt contact and deleted it. No problems since.
Also, to the OP, just because a few people have problems, doesn't mean that it "renders a whole generation of machines unusable." I have 6 first gen iPads in my family and all are working fine... Try resetting, restoring from backup, and restoring as new. see what happens then...

  • After iOS 8 update wifi is so slow and battery life is much worse

After installing iOS8 on my 5s the wifi and 3G has slowed remarkably down. The facebook app now doesn't refresh unless I turn the phone off and on again and safari takes an age to load it's pages. Also the battery life is even worse than before. I used the maps yesterday for 1.5 hours for a trip and it took me from full battery down to 10% in that time. This is really irritating me now, will it be fixed?

Like you I have a 4S running on iOS 8, and since the upgrade to 8 my battery drains like crazy.  I'm not experiencing the wifi issues that some of the other posters are having, but the rapid battery drain seems to be a common issue.  I keep hoping Apple will address this with their updates for iOS 8, but it always seems to be overlooked.

  • Fix for iPhone Battery Life

Hi, I have done this with IOS 5 through 6 and it works.
I have done this serveral times with my phone, as battery life decreases.  I have not figured out what is the original cause of my battery problems, but every now and again, something starts to dain my battery at a rappid rate, in an hour or two.  This is the fix to reset it.
1 - Back up you phone to iTunes
2 - Go into the settings under General and at the bottom sellect Reset and reset your iPhone erassing all data.
3 - Once it resets and shows you the default "out of the box" screan, power it off
4 - Recharge it FULLY.... I leave it over night.
5 - Power it on again
6 - Restore your settings via iTunes.
    7 - Your done
In my experiance, if you skip any of the steps, like not powering off when your recharge or not recharging fully, will result in it still draining quickly.
    Hope this works for you.

    Thanks JJT2122 !

  • When/how to charge the iPhone for optimal battery life?

I have an iPhone 3G 8GB. I was just wondering what the best way to go about charging the iPhone is, in order to optimise the battery life?
Should you wait until the iPhone is really flat/ low battery and then charge it up full, or are smaller and more frequent 'shallow' charges healthier?
I also heard somewhere that every couple of months or so it is a good idea to let the battery run completely dead and then charge it up, in order to calibrate it or something... but that doing this too often could be detrimental.
Any help/ advice would be greatly appreciated! I don't know if I should let my iPhone run really low before charging it or if smaller more frequent chargers are the way to go.
    Thanks!

Thanks! I did read over that and have taken the steps mentioned and fiddled around with settings of my phone to optimise use. I was just wondering if anyone else had anything else to add about charging habits specifically and what works best... I think mainly I'm just being paranoid about my phone dying prematurely since it's the first time I've owned such an expensive gadget!
Also, can you overcharge it? Is it bad to leave it on the charger overnight? I've done some searching in other threads/ webpages and there seems to be some discrepancies but for the most part people seem to think that it will be fine?

  • Should I Run off AC or Battery for max battery life?

I've read so many different theories on extending your battery life, I was wondering what is the most optimal setup to ensure a long battery life:
    1) If I'm using my laptop at home on a desk, is it better to keep my laptop plugged into the AC battery charger even at 100%? (i.e. Will the battery know to stop charging and will my laptop just be running off the AC current or will it constantly be overcharging my battery and draining the lifecycle)?
    Thanks for any help here.

Also, I did check apples site but didn't find this answer here: http://www.apple.com/batteries/maximizing-performance/
This website lead me to believe it's better to run off AC, but it's not written by apple, so not sure if it's accurate: http://www.quora.com/Will-running-my-MacBook-Air-while-plugged-in-improve-its-ba ttery-life

  • IPhone 5 hotter than Venus and dreadful battery life after beginning to use photo streams?

You may be able to tell from the title i have an issue.
Set up the photo stream today after my bro in law shared pictures. Phone immediately heated up to ridiculous levels and my battery life has been dreadful.
I've had the phone since start of June and had good battery life and no issues with heat, done the ios7 update last week (with no problems) so I reckon the issue is with the photo stream feature but I'm no tech wizard.
I've done a few searches for an answer but not found anything.
    Any help would be great
    Cheers
    Stevie

i am having same problem lately with my Iphone 5 and IOS7. I see my phone gets very hot when using the camera (or the gps apps). but even when I turn the camera off as well as GPS, the drainage is growing and when it gets to 24% it shuts down !!!! dead, I connected to the usb cable and it started but showed 0%.... very frustrating indeed !!!! would I be experiencing same issues with the new 5S I ordered already ??
I see your comment about the "photo stream" - it sounds potential problem - I wonder if any other colleagues will bring this up as well ?!
I turned off the Photo Sharing - will see if it's better, I did not want to turn off the Photo Stream becasue I did npt want to lose all my stored photos in te Icloud.
is there something wrong with the camera ??

  • Best practice for keeping battery life optimal

I am in a job role where my usage of my iPhone 4S is best described as:
Weekdays: long call (60+ minutes) after long call (60+ minutes), etc. but MOSTLY voice calls.
    and
Evenings/Nights:  Use my phone occasionally, mostly apps/data/entertainment type of use.
So far, I tend to keep my phone plugged in while I'm on these long conference calls, unplug when I need to step out, or step away from my desk, but then plug back in for the next call, etc.
I plug in at night to start a fresh, 100% full battery the next day.
Should I do anything differently to get the best life (long term) out of my battery?  Should  I not keep it plugged in while using it?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have to admit I never gave special attention to batterie on my 3 Ipod-iPhone and 2 MacBookPro and battery lasted for 3-4 years (even 5 on my first MBP).

  • After updating my iPhone 4s to iOS 6.1, my phone runs hot and battery life is down to only a few hours. Any idea how to fix?

I installed iOS 6.1 to my iPhone 4s and the next day, the battery drained in about 6 hours, where it used to last all day or longer.  I also noticed today that it is running very hot.  I disabled location services to see if that would help but it doesn't seem to be making a huge difference.  Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks!!

I have the same problem since updating to 6.1.1. The battery has never been great but since the update it is ridiculous. It drains by 40% in an hour with no use at all and all background programmes closed.
    Please fix this!

  • Suggestion for improving battery life with Reminders in iOS5 on iPhone 4

I am experimenting with a location-based reminder, and once again the Location icon is permanently on and my battery is being drained. I'm not a programmer but I have a couple ideas:
Use the accelerometer in the phone to determine if it's moving, and then start looking for location.
Most people, when they're at work, are at work for several hours, so there's no benefit to polling for location while you're sitting at your desk. Perhaps the phone could learn your routine and know not to look for location between say, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Or you could have a setting to explicitly tell it not to poll during the week between certain hours.
This would make Reminders more useful. Also is there better battery management for this stuff on the 4S? Is that another benefit?
    Thanks!

  • Iphone; best practice for better battery life

Okay, I've searched other threads and can't really find anything definitive on all this. I've found my battery life to be disappointing; I can go one and a half days without wi-fi or bluetooth turned on before it turns off.
    1) Is it true that when I press and hold the 'home' key while in an application the application 'quits.' If so, is this more likely to save battery life? Does an application ever really 'quit?' It strikes me that it doesn't.
    2) If move from safari to home without quitting is that safari page still loading, and thus sucking up battery life ?
    3) If I hold the sleep and home keys at the same time I am able to turn off my iphone. What is the advantage of doing this at all? Has anyone experimented with turning the phone off at night? If so, has anyone noticed a better battery life? Is the iphone even meant to be turned off?
    4) Should I be turning off the iphone to charge it once in a while; the other threads I've read seem to indicate no, however, I thought I would open this up again.

I believe you directed this at me: I called them...I do not have an apple store within a reasonable distance. They sent the loaner phone in a box, waived my rental fee. I sync my phone took out the sim card and put it in the loaner phone, syncd the loaner phone and had all my stuff. put my phone in the box, fed ex picked it up the next day. I tracked it on the apple repair site, it said they were running diagnostics that same day and the next the web site said replacement phone sent and it got to me in a brand new nice little apple box like the original, only smaller. None of the accessories were sent in or replaced. Hope that answers your question.
    Good Luck!

  • Has a solution been found for the battery life problem after the Galexy S5 update?!

Andriod System and Andriod OS eating all of my battery causing in to drain 15%an hour after the update. Yes if have uninstalled all unnecessary apps and disable everything I can. Has a solution been found yet? I know Im not the only person who has had this problem from my research. Is there a fix?!

DONT do a Factory Reset.  It will not help and is NOT necessary after an update.
    Your issues are multi phased.
Go to Settings>Battery and see what is using the power
    1) with a new Operating system, your phone will optimize the system and apps, this in itself can take a few days.
    2) aside from that, you should try running the phone in Safe Mode as this loads only the core stuff necessary to run the phone.
    3) if Safe Mode works then it Is one of your Third Party Apps and would be easy to track down
    4) if it is one of the apps it is recommended that you uninstall them run the phone then start installing them slowly until you find the offending app
    5) If running in Safe mode has NOT worked, then you need to deep dive a bit more.  Open Settings>Apps and go to the ALL tab.  Go in and start Force Stopping apps such as Camera, Sync etc...(the last Samsung update the Camera was frozen and would drain the battery pretty fast)
It is most likely a third party app causing the slowness.  As a last resort you can bring your phone to a Best Buy and go to the Samsung Kiosk or Booth inside the store.  These are manned by Samsung Employees and you would ask them to re flash your phone. They will plug it into their computer and load the software directly from their servers and not over the air.  This would be the cleanest install you can get on these phones but it may not fix the issue if Samsung coded part of it incorrectly or if the camera app is not updated and is incompatible with Lollipop which is causing it to run continuously.
