  • How to fresh install iOS on 1st gen iPad?

I'm being "gifted" a couple dead 1st gen iPads.  Both have dead batteries and supposedly no OS.  Included will be new batteries.  I'm sure I can swap batteries (YouTube has a video for everything).  I just d/l'ed iOS 5.0.  I've never dealt with Apple before (I'm a Linux guy...shrug) so I don't know jack about this.
How can I install iOS 5.0 on my "new" iPads?  I'm planning on using one for myself and giving one to a local, home schooling family that can't afford a "toy" like this (even if this "toy" would make a good learning base).
Do I just plug the iPad into the computer and hit a few keys on the iPad screen?  Or is there more to it?
Thanks for all your help.  I've installed Windows and Linux OSs via both USB (thumb) drive and CD to a computer and Android OSs via both BT and USB cable (to/from my computer).  I'm not a complete computer noob but know enough to break things pretty well.
    Thanks in advance!!

Just this much of your post indicates you are starting down a path that is going to be loaded with problems.  I suggest you throw this download away, and start down a brand new path.
Apple software goes through checks and balances to make sure the latest software for that version of hardware is what gets installed.  Your best approach, if you somehow successfully installed new batteries, is to install the current iTunes version on your computer (11.1.5), and then plug your iPad into iTunes using the USB cable that was supplied with the iPad when it first was shipped by Apple.  iTunes on your computer should detect the iPad, and hopefully proceed with the approprate setup.

  • How to improve use for 1st Gen iPad

I love this app. I have other pdf readers but I love this app the most. The only problem is, it lags on me most of the time. It slows down every now and then. Please give me some advice on how I can improve the performance of the Adobe Reader on my 1st Gen iPad. Thank you very much!

The lagging problem might be the reason of memory. You can try using Adobe Reader after freeing up memory by removing stuff from your device which is not necessary.
    Thanks,

That's right. The iPad 1 maxes out at 5.1.1

  • Using 1 password with 1st gen iPad. How?

can't fine 1password 3 for 1st gen ipad. Itunes store only has ver 4 which will only work with IOS 6 and my aging Ipad won't work with IOS 6. Being abandoned with a 2 year old product is no fun. Thanks, Jerry

If the version that you want to use is no longer available, there is nothing that you can do about it.
I'm not familiar with the app, but if the developer updated it to work with iOS 6 only, then there is nothing that you or Apple can do about it. It would be up to the developer to make sure that the app will work in a lesser iOS.
If this is the app that you want, unfortunately, it only works in iOS 6.

  • HT5457 iPad 1 is a lot newer than iPhone 3GS. It has the A4 chip! Why no IOS 6 for the 1st gen. iPad?

iPad 1 is a lot newer than iPhone 3GS. It has the A4 chip! Why no IOS 6 for the 1st gen. iPad?

quite surprised it suggests that iPhone 3gs s more powerful than the iPad1? iphone 3gs is supported. something is fishy. i don't want to fall out of love with apple products. looks like it's a business decision to cut support for iPad 1 - not technical shortcoming. if apple cut support for 3gs they will upset customers who just bought 3gs before iphone 5 was launched.... tsk tsk tsk.. i'm not from US. hope to see a class action suit by US peeps to resolve this...

  • Multi-Touch Gestures disabled on 1st gen iPad in iOS 5?

Apple, please fix this!!!  This is absurd!  Why on earth would you handicap 1st gen ipad owners?  There is no hardware limitation with the 1st gen, so why remove this from iOS 5 for ipad1?   As a developer who used xCode I enabled the new multi-touch gestures on my iPad and they were a great addition, and now to read that under iOS 5 they are no supported on first gen ipad is simply beyond me.   Outrageously stupid.  I already installed iOS 5 on my iPad.   So I am simply out of luck????

Please fix this Apple! I have been using them for a while and going back to not having them on my iPad 1 is VERY frustrating!
Productivity levels decrease while using the iPad in the "old school" way clicking the home button all the time to switch through apps. If gestures are to be non existent in iPad 1 I think it would be good to know the technical reasoning behind this. Also, the online documentation should be reviewed and promote this as part of iPad 2 and above, not iPads as described in:
    http://www.apple.com/ios/features.html
"iOS 5 includes a few new moves and shortcuts to help you get around even quicker on your iPad: Using four or five fingers, swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar, pinch to return to the Home screen, and swipe left or right to switch between apps."
Thanks and looking forward to a fix

  • I have a 1st gen. iPad and i"m unable to update to iOS 6, what's wrong?

I have a 1st gen. iPad and unable to update to iOS 6, what's wrong?

Correct, iOS 5.1.1 is the highest possible for the first gen iPad.

  • Why apple give up 1st gen iPad to support IOS 6

WHY APPLE GIVE UP 1ST GEN IPAD ,IOS 5.1.1 IS Last OS UPDATE FOR 1ST GEN.
AI........MY 1ST GEN IPAD CANT UPDATE TO IOS 6 ...GIVE UP

This question has been discussed several times during the past couple of days...concensus seems to run along the lines of the A4 processor and memory in the original iPad not being able to handle the demands of iOS 6.  Performance would be so degraded it would not be good to use.

  • Is the new Pages iOS 5 app compatible with 1st gen iPad?

Hello, I should point out that I have upgraded my iPad software to the new iOS 5 version.  I just saw in the Apps store since the new Pages update a few days ago, that some people are complaining about incompatibility for the 1st gen iPad.  Any truth to that before I purchase?
    Thanks!
    -Jack

    Hello All,
Guess what?  Yes indeed the newly updated Pages works perfectly with the 1st gen iPad like what I've got.  And documents do, in fact, work in either portrait or landscape mode automatcially as you turn your iPad.  Apparently, you should first update to the new iOS5 before you install the new Pages.
    Thought I'd throw that out,
    -Jack
P.S.  Pages is fantastic on the iPad and especially when it's hooked up with the Apple wireless keyboard.

  • HT4623 I have a 1st gen iPad. Upgrade to iOS 6.1.1 appeared, but it quit shortly into it and now I am being told that all software is up to date at 5.1.1! Synced iPad to the iMac and it also says the iPad is up to date. What gives?

I have a 1st gen iPad. Upgrade to IOS 6.1.1 appeared, but it quit shortly into the installing and has not come back up again. Both the iPad and when synced to the iMac, say i am fully up to date at 5.1.1! Has anyone had / got the same issue? How can I upgrade when it doesn't acknowledge there is no need?

    You are most welcome

My dad has a 1st gen iPad.  He is 83 yo.  I recently purchased an Apple TV for him because he loves Netflix and I told him that he could view his photos via the television.  BUT, I'm not having success with Photostream.  Help me.....I've been researching and trying everything I can and so far, no luck.  He keeps asking about the photos, and I'm losing patience with myself and Apple TV.  Can anyone help????  Thank you.

  • HT5457 New app upgrades put 1st gen Ipad users out in the cold - Recently DirecTV and The Blaze both upgraded their ipad apps so that only ios 6 and above were compatible - anyone who has a 1st gen ipad cannot upgrade to ios 6  - what is up with this Appl

So 1st gen ipad users are basiclly left out in the cold unless they go out an buy a new IPad - of course DTV and The Blaze are blaming Apple and Apple is blaming them - what is the deal Apple -  I pay for my subscription to The Blaze in order to have it on my IPad and now I can't even use it - same with DTV - so is Apple now forcing people to buy upgraded devices thru their apps that will no longer support the older generations - what a joke this is and bad business.

Unfortunately software always moves faster than hardware.
Apple's not going to change things. You can try talking to those two app developers and have them make their older versions available.
Beyond that, if you wish to express yourself directly to Apple, http://www.apple.com/feedback/
