IOS 8: iTunes Match hogging huge amount of storage space on iPhone (6 Plus)

Hi there!
I use iTunes Match for a long time now, Have about 18k Songs in in all tagged incl. covers (compressed with JPEG mini app)
After updating to iOS 8, I'm quite sure that Match seems to be the root of a massive use of "other" storage space on my new iPhone 6 Plus. I opted for the 16GB because I thought I don't need more because of iTunes Match. Apparently I was mistaken as the baseline design by Apple is no longer sufficient for using the basic services Apple provides. I tried to solve the problem by restoring the Phone two weeks ago, but the problem reoccurs no matter wether I create a new iPhone and activate iTunes Match or restore it form an iCloud Backup.
I made some screenshots to show the problem:
Note that I have deleted every single cache-file prior to this screenshot and that there is not a single music file on the iPhone.
There also still seems to be a problem with the delete-function integrated in iOS, as music-data is not always wiped, but that's old news I think:
After experimenting with deactivating and activating iTunes Match on the phone and downloading a short album (~50MB) for testing purposes, this happened:
I am out of ideas how to fix this...Applecare is more or less not available right now here in Germany because of the iOS 8.0.1 disaster.
I'm really ****** of as more and more space is eaten up on my phone without even having any use of it. Restoring my iPhone every 2 weeks can't be the answer.
Does anybody have an idea how to fix this? Is this problem a known bug and fixed in iOS 8.1?
Any help is appreciated
Kind regards,
Thorbjörn

Hello Dan,
I am having the exact same issue except mine might be a little worse. I restored my phone and "set up as new" about 3 times. I didn't have much to lose as far as "backup" was concerned so I just went ahead and wiped the whole phone clean. I am missing 10gb.
I Have accepted the fact that iOS takes 5.2GB of storage to run my phone (which is ridiculous). I have also added up all my used data in the "manage storage" portion in setting and it adds up to about 2gb. So basically I have about 10GB unaccounted for. I chatted with apple twice and talked to supervisors and they all tried to walk me through the same process of restoring, rebooting, clearing cache, resetting etc. nothing has worked. I've come to the conclusion that it's a faulty flash drive and we just need to return our phones for new ones. Nothing can be done.

  • When I look at my Ipod on Itunes on my laptop it is showing that I have a large amount of storage space taken up with Apps. (more than my music). In fact I only have the Apps which came with the ipod touch! How do I get my storage back?

I have an ipod touch 64GB.  I have 3,146 songs, 3 videos, 106 photos and 1 app. The capacity of my ipod is 58 GB (I guess the remainder is the OS), It says I have 7.6GB remaining. When I look at my ipod on Itunes on my laptop the bar at the bottom shows a huge amount of storage space is taken up by Apps.  I don't have any apps apart from the ones which came with the ipod touch which I cannot erase and wouldnt really want to.  I am baffled why it says so much storage has been taken up by Apps! Please help me!!!

Connect the iPod to your computer and look at the storage used by the various categories as shown in the colored bargarph in iTunes.
    Come back with the results.
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.  Usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

Unplug your Iphone out of your computer and replug it back in. It took me several times before I could do this

  • I have purchased iTunes match but it does not connect to my iPhone.

You must be signed into the iTunes Store on your iPhone using the same Apple ID with which your purchased the iTunes Match service.

  • My program on Solaris 9 uses huge amounts of swap space

    hi,
i have written a program that uses very little memory but seems to use huge amounts of swap space in increments of 1.4GB. The initial install of the Solaris 9 only allocated 500MB of swap for 4GB of Memory. The swap space has now been increased to 16GB but the program seems to use more swap space.
The program uses an api to attach to up to 100 agents and (the peice i wrote) registers a callback to handle events from the agents, a small amount of memory is allacated to hold details of each agent but no more.
Can anyone shed any light on this as this program does run on other platforms with any issues.
    sdarcy7

are you sure you are release memory, what language are you using?
you can reboot the system and follow the memory process using vmstat and swap -l, after that run your program only one time, and run the command again so the memory after should be the same that the initial before you run your process, if not , you program is collecting memory and is not releasing it.
    Good luck,

  • IOS 7, iTunes Match, and downloads to Music -- beware of your first use

I'll explain the situation in a moment. My question for the community is if someone saw a way to avoid this from happening.
I just encountered a perfect storm when I upgraded to ios 7. So far it has cost me $230 in excess data charges.
I am an iTunes Match subscriber.
Before the upgrade to ios 7, ios 6 had an option in Settings -> Music to tell it not to use cellular data. I had cellular data for Music disabled, so many times I'd download a playlist from Match down to my phone and would start this process at home on wifi, leave, and then it would complete later that day when I hit another wifi network.
When I upgraded to ios7, there were some changes in how to control access to cellular data:
    (1) Apple removed that control from the Settings -> Music UI
    (2) Apple added a menu option called Settings -> iTunes and App Store. In that UI< you have the option of turning iTunes Match on or off, and at the bottom you also have the option enabling cellular data. Just below that, it says "Use cellular data network for automatic downloads and iTunes Match." One of the first things I did after the upgrade, while still on wifi, was turn cellular data off in this UI.
    (3) Apple added a UI called Settings -> Cellular, and in there is a UI called "Use Cellular Data For:", and it gives you a list of apps where you can turn cellular on/off for each one individually. Right after the upgrade to ios 7, that list was very short. It didn't have Music or iTunes Match listed, only Mail, Passbook, and a few basic apps.
So after my upgrade, the only place that appeared to control downloads from iTunes Match was the menu in #2, which I had already used to disable cellular data for.
Since I had deleted all my music to make room for the upgrade, I picked a playlist that morning and told my phone to download it. It was about 1GB of music. Then I got on my bike and rode to work woth my phone buried in my bike bag. When I arrived at work, I had a series of text messages from my carrier that I had exceeded my data plan and was now getting charged .25/MB. I was at the very end of a billing month and at the start of my ride only had about 100MB left on my data plan.
    So what happened?
Well, as it turns out, the menu for Use Cellular Data For: in #3 above only lists apps once they've used cellular data (except maybe the obvious ones like Mail, Passbook, etc.). And for some bizarre reason, that download wasn't considered "iTunes Match" by ios 7, it was considered a download by the Music app in ios 7. So once I got to work and dug into this, I then found that Music was now listed in the Use Cellular Data For: dialog. So what happened was that I left the house, left wifi, and the phone kept downloading that big playlist on cellular and somewhere, probably right as I was screaming down the hill from my house, the Music app showed up on Use Cellular Data For:. I did some tests with other apps and they only appear on that list AFTER you've used cellular data for them.
Learning this with any other app, or at the beginning of a billing month, would not have been an issue, but my perfect storm of being almost tapped out on my data plan when I left my home wifi network killed me.
I have already contacted my carrier about this, although it's not their fault. I personally think it's Apple's fault for (a) creating a misleading UI for #2 above, and (b) for not listing "Music" in the list of apps in the Use Cellular Data For: dialog immediately after the upgrade.
Anyone else had this problem? If not, and you are an iTunes Match user who has just upgrade to ios 7, you can easily avoid this by downloading one song from cellular to get the Music app to appear in the Use Cellular Data For: list

I am also having problems with smart playlists on OS7 iphone 4s with mountain Lion on my mac
I have two smart playlists, one for music not played in 6 months, the other for zero plays, the other criteria for the lists are media type 'music' and track time ' less than 15 minutes.
These two playlists have 619 items and 108 items respectively in my mac but on the phone it shows 2962 items (for both lists) and a cloud symbol next to the track - although scrolling down, there are some tracks that do not have the cloud symbol - these look like the original 619 and 108 in the lists
Other smart playlists are fine and appear to be not affected

  • After updating to ios 7, iTunes Match doesn't work on iPhone 4

I updated to ios 7 on my iPhone 4 last night.
I purchased iTunes Match today.  Everything has been uploaded through my computer, and everything is fine on my computer's end.  But when I open up my music app on my iPhone 4, I get a screen that says Loading iTunes Match...  and it stays there for hours. Without ever having my music pop up.

I have the same problem which started after I upgraded to iOS 7.  It works particularly bad on the iPhone 4. It is in "Loading iTunes Match" mode most of the time with no or very slow progress, and when it finally ends, the uploaded Playlists are never there, not one.  "Loading iTunes Match" would restart again after leaving and restarting music, say 50% of the time. Not sure what really is being loaded and can't understand why it has to be reloaded so often.
I had a problem ticket with Apple Support, but the specialist asked for a series of screenshots documenting the start time of "Loading iTunes Match" and the eventual completion time.  I told him to forget it because I had already spent too much time turning this and that on and off for so many times in so many days trying to listen to my own uploaded music and I did not want to fiddle around anymore.  I have decided not to renew my iTunes Match service in November, and have since turned off iTunes Match on all my devices and gone back to syncing to keep things simple.
I also have Amazon Cloud Player which is working just fine for the purpose of having some kind of cloud access of my music. I will be renewing this $24 service this month for another year instead of iTunes Match.
Apple was supposed to be very good at software development, and for them not resolving a problem in a paid service since the rollout of iOS 7 is just disappointing.

  • I have an iphone 6 with the most recent iOS.  iTunes Match is on.  Music app only showing songs purchased on iTunes and no playlists are displayed.  Just happened when updating iTunes Match.  Solutons?

I have an iPhone 6 with 64 GB of memory.  I have iTunes Match turned on my account and on the phone.  Suddenly, the Music app is only displaying music purchased directly from iTunes and no playlists are displayed.  This occurred after updating iTunes Match on my PC; when new music did not appear, I turned off iTunes Match off/on the PC then did the same on iPhone 6.  It looks like iTunes Match is trying to do a full download to the phone but it never completes.  Ideas?

  • IOS 6 iTunes Match Artist missing

    Details: iPhone 4s iOS6
I noticed that after upgrading the software to iOS6 I lost all my artist on my music player. However I could still see my music if i looked under the albums or songs list. I figured this was a new method for Apple to do things now, but when i tried to look for specific artist I knew I had in my iTunes Match library none of them appeared and I onlt had the option to check the iTunes store. ***... Is iTunes Match messed up on iOS6 or is this truely a new methos by Apple that I cant seem to understand.
In iOS5 I had all my Artist names show up and had the decision to download all their songs on only certain tracks. With iOS6 even if i download whole albums or single songs I cant make any artist names appear in the ARTIST section.
Anybody have any information on this? I've also tried rebooting my phone and turning on and off Music Match on my laptop and phone but without any results.

I didn't mention it, but I also already tried both of these potential solutions.  I just tried again to be sure.
All the tracks I've checked do not have "Part of compliation" turned on.  I can't check all 19,000 tracks, but I don't see why too many would have this switched on.  The artists also show up fine on my ipad 2, so I don't think this is the issue.
I have also been toggling the "Group by Album Artist" Off/On on my iphone and it doesn't fix the problem.  I have 30 artists listed with grouping on and 35 listed with grouping off.
Almost all of my music has artist under the artist tab and shows up fine in itunes and on my ipad 2.
The current implementation of itunes match is terrible.  I love the idea but regret signing up for it.  I was such a pain to get my library uploaded, but now that I'm in I continue to struggling to make it work.  I really hope there's a big update coming that fixes all these problems.

  • How is it possible to cancel (not suspend) a video download from iTunes Store (iPad under iOs 6)? (I do not have sufficient storage space on my iPad)

    Hi,
I am facing the following difficulty with my iPad (model MD369NF/A) under iOs 6.1.3.
I have bought 2 videos on iTunes Store, but I do not succeed in downloading them: an error message mentions that iPas does not have enough storage capacity.
As a matter of face, when I look at the way the storage is used, I find “Others” for around 10 Go (is there some king of reserved space for the downloading of videos from iTunes Store?), and only a very small number of Mo available.
I would simply like to cancel the downloading of the 2 videos, and hope that it would free the "Others" storage space (in the hypothesis that "Others" is space reserved for videos once downloaded), but I do not manage to do it. I can suspend the downloading, but I do not see how to cancel it.
Would you have a solution to propose ?
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Nicolas

    Hey Nicolas36,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The following article outlines issues with free space, capacity, and a large amount of "other" space. You'll want to connect your iPad to your computer with iTunes to follow the steps:
iOS: 'Not enough free space' alert when trying to sync
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1503
One symptom of this issue will be displayed in iTunes where the Capacity indicator for the iOS device will report a large amount of "Other" disk usage for the device. To resolve this issue:
    - Turn off the music or photo sync option in iTunes for the device.
    - Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
    - Turn the music and photo sync options for the device on again.
    - Click Apply again to try to sync the device to iTunes.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • ITunes match completed on computer but wont work on iPhone...Please help!

I have an interesting situation. I have a developers license (if only to get iOS for my iPhone before anyone else does.... lol). Before the public launch of the iOS 5 and iTunes Match and iCloud, I set up a "Developer ID". Match worked beautifuly for me then, as well as iCloud etc... Now that the public release is out, I have migrated my old me.com (my main account) account over to a new 'iCloud' account. I paid my $24.95 or whatever for iTunes Match.... AGAIN.... And set forth 'matching' my music with iTunes. It completed on my computer, however now my iPhone will not see the music in the cloud. I have not yet tried this on any of my other Apple devices, as I assume the same thing will happen on all of them.
    Things I have tried:
Turning everything on and off (several times)
Turning icloud on and off on my phone (several times)
Signing in using my developer ID... Then signing in using my main login.
I have put my main ID in every spot I can think of on my phone... email/iCloud/App Store/Home sharing/iTunes store
I have downloaded previous purchases using the iTunes store to try and "Jar" it and make it see the rest of my music.
I am at a loss and would love to know if anyone else has had this issue and how they fixed it.
    Christian
Thank you so much for your help ahead of time!

    Please help.... No Ideas?!?!?!

  • ITunes Match 256 kbps (iMac / Extra Storage etc...)

Got a couple of questions if anyone can help?
If we sign up for iTunes Match (when it is available) and we have 15,000 songs approx (99% ripped off CD's), do we have to pay for the extra storage on top of the iTunes Match yearly fee?
Can we upgrade / download 256 kbps files to iTunes on iMac via iTunes Match or is that only possible on iOS devices?

Because this is what Apple told me to do when I called them about the issue.

  • I'm trying to Update my IOs but Itunes tells me that it cannot backup because the iPhone disconnected, which is not true as it IS connected

When I try and sync my iPhone or update the iOS using iTunes, I get the message iTunes could not back up the iPhone because the iPhone disconnected

Clean the connector on the bottom of the phone with a soft dry toothbrush, and inspect it with a magnifying glass to make sure it is clean and has no bent pins.
If this does not fix it disable the firewall and antivirus on your phone. And if that doesn't fix it you most likely have a hardware problem.
To ask Apple call them or visit an Apple store.

  • How do I transfer the iTunes Match songs downloaded on my computer to my iPhone?

I downloaded all of my songs from iTunes Match to my computer and was hoping to transfer them via USB to my iPhone. It appears that the only way to get them on my phone is to download them from the could though. Is there a way to transfer the songs to my iPhone via USB? Or do I have to download them (again) from the cloud?

I turned off iTunes Match on my phone and things seemed to work how I wanted. The songs that I downloaded on my computer just transferred over like normal.
