IOS 8 / OSX Yosemite Family Sharing Concerns with DRM

Basically, there are three concerns that I would love to see if there is any guidance on them:
Any purchased music that I downloaded off of another family member that was released in the 2005-2007 range has problems downloading {I think this is because of the old DRM encoding at that time}
I was wondering if there was anyway to create playlists with other family member's music that syncs between my devices.
It seem as though we can't stream movies off other family members accounts. The only way to watch is to actually download.
Let me know if there is anyway to work around it or fix the issues presented. Thanks!

Thanks, but I've looked at that already. It states i need iOS 8+ to set it up, but I can't seem to see whether it will work on < iOS 8 devices. If my son has a iPad mini and accepts the invitation on it and also has a 3GS phone and has iTunes on it, will there be sharing of the content?  I guess I'll just have to try it and see!

  • Family sharing works with different regional accounts

So I have my aple ID based in Ireland, and I just setup the family sharing option with my mom living in Portugal.
Will she see all my purchases even if they are from my country? and more important: can she download them if they are country  store specific?
Usually if you search for an app that is not available in your country you cannot download it unless you have an account for that specific country.

All your Applications should be in /Applications folder by default to be accessible to all users and to be seen by updaters. If you created an "Applications" folder within your Home folder, then only you will be able to use those Applications. Otherwise there should be no permissions issues.
Check Permissions Inside a Home folder:
    • Navigate to /Users/~(Home)/Library.
    • Get Info (Command - i) on folders for apps you are having problems with.
    • Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
    • Make sure the user is the owner, with "read and write" access.
    • Click on "apply to all"
    • If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are having trouble with.

  • Family Sharing together with iTunes Match

How can iTunes Match be used together with family sharing on e.g. the iPodof a child?
When the child wants to use the App-Store over family sharing, it needs to be logged on in iTunes with the childs account - but then iTunes Match can't be used from the Parents account.

I am very interested in this as well. I don't think there is currently a solution but I think (hope) it is something that Apple will enable in the near future. Let Apple know that this is a feature we want! Send feedback here:

  • Family Sharing - problem with synchronisatzion

    Hi
I have installed the new family sharing on my wifes iPhone and my iPhone. So she bought a song in iTunes and now I could get it for free also on my iphone. But if I synchronize now my iPhone with iTunes, the new song which appears in my music list "newest songs", is not appearing after synchronisation in my iTunes.
Is this correct? It would be great if I would have in my iTunes the mp3 file so I can listen the new song also on my computer.
    Thanks for your help.

and yes i'm sure he bought it with that apple id

  • I can't set up a Family Sharing account with me as an organiser.

It won't let me set up a Family Organisation account, I am 16 (I know that's complicated) but my family are sort of tech dinosaurs!

I think I resolved this, it was because my account didn't have a DOB set up in it prior to me trying to log in.

  • My wife and I are both Family Sharing Organizers of each other's group! How do I stop this and have me as the only Family Member Organizer with my wife as a member of my group?

This new Family Sharing idea is great on the surface, but without some management tools to fix problems its worthless. Case in point - somehow, when my wife and I upgraded our iPads to 8.0.2, I decided to become the organizer, since my Apple ID is the one that does all the purchases. But somehow, while I was setting up my wife's Apple ID with iCloud (she was originally set up with my iCloud id), I became a part of her Family Sharing plan with *her* becoming the organizer. Now I'm the organizer on my iPad with her as a member, and she's the Family Sharing organizer on her iPad with me as a member!
I've tried everything, including erasing both iPads and even creating new Apple ids for the both of us, but both Family Sharing accounts just reappear out of nowhere when we reboot. Is there any way to get rid of both our Family Sharing accounts so we can start over again?
    Thanks
    MIke

There are a lot of posts in the forums today with people having problems with iMessage.   There was also a published outage yesterday, so it's possible there are still some issues that may be impacting you both.
I would just wait it out - I'm sure it will be sorted out soon.

  • Family Sharing with more than one apple id

I understand family sharing having my mom be the organizer so I have access to anything purchased on her account without having to use her apple id.  However, is there a way to reciprocate family sharing so she has access to the things I purchase?  If I set up a family sharing account with my apple id will this work?

    Howdy Willoughbee,
It sounds like you want to know if you can use Family Sharing to share purchases with with other family members when you aren’t the Organizer. Yes, the article linked below provides a lot of great information about Family Sharing and will walk you through sharing purchases with family members.

  • IOS 8 Family Sharing Notification Issues

I receive "request to buy" notifications, from my daughter, on my iPad, but not on my iPhone.  If I approve, she receives the notification, but if I decline, she does not receive the denied notification.
Anyone else having these kind of issues?
Until iOS 8, my entire family shared an iTunes account for purchases.  I have set up Family Sharing, as the Organizer, and under my iCloud account, but it is not the shared iTunes account. I did pick the shared iTunes account under the Family Purchases section of the Family Sharing setup.  I then invited my daughter and set her iPad up to do the family sharing. She is required to ask to make purchases and it seems to work.
Like I said at the beginning of this post, I receive a request notification on my iPad, but not my iPhone.  I checked the settings between my iPad and my iPhone and they match exactly.  I don't want to tinker around so much because I have the other posts about Family Sharing limitations and lockouts.
I'm afraid to "convert" my son and wife to the new family sharing plan until I know for sure the rest of this system is going to work as advertised.

Already written this entry in another post, but since many people, including me, I post it here, too, but unfortunately no solution:
Same here. What's really strange it the following. I just recently set up family sharing, and have only received 3 requests. First time the notification of the request only turned up on my computer at work, next time only on my phone. The third time only on  my computer at home. Whenever I try to approve on any of  the computers I get stuck in a sort of loop where I enter my Apple ID. What I do is, the following. I find the notification, and click on it, get to the "info screen" where I get some info on the app and the two buttons deny and approve in the upper right corner.. I decide to approve and is prompted to enter my password, which I do. Then only thing that happens is that the dialog box disappears, taking me back to the "info screen" where I can approve but before I'm able to do anything, the dialog box prompting me  for my Apple ID comes up again. I enter the password, and so it goes until I choose "cancel" in the dialog box. I then get back to the "info screen". I've never tried to press the deny button there. The second notification that I got, the one on my phone, worked without any trouble at all. Would be nice if I could get the notification for requests number 1 and 2 (the ones I got on computer work and computer home), but I haven't found any notification on the phone for those two apps.

  • Family sharing and members itunes balances?

Me and my wife just updated to iOS 8 and enabled family sharing with me as the organizer.
My wife had a concern, though. She has like $10+ sitting in her itunes balance and wants to make sure that she can use it. Since it was a gift to her, we don't want my purchases to affect the balance. And I want her purchases to come out of that balance before hitting my bank account. At the rate she purchases things, it could take years before it is used up. This is the reason why we did not wait to activate family sharing.
Any confirmation on how this situation would play out?

    Hey Jeriokelive,
Thanks for the question. If a family memeber has store credit in their account, that credit will be used before the organizer's payment information:
    Making purchases
After you set up your family, any time a family member initiates a new purchase it will be billed directly to your account unless that family member has gift or store credit. First, their store credit will be used to pay the partial or total bill. The remainder will bill to the family organizer. As the family organizer, any receipts generated by the transaction will be sent to you. Learn more about how iTunes Store purchases are billed.

  • How do i set up family sharing?

My phone isn't allowing me to set up a family sharing account with my family. The message keeps popping up saying that "only an adult with a valid iTunes & App Store payment method can set up Family Sharing. Ask a parent to set up Family Sharing from iCloud Settings." I am the parent of the family, therefore why is it not allowing me to create the account?

    Hi jas717,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
Because there are only two of you, the solution that I may recommend for sharing content would be to use one Apple ID (the one you already have) for iTunes and App Store purchases between both of you. This will allow the both of you have access to the same purchased content. If you would like to have different Contacts, Calendars, etc., you can create a second Apple ID for use with iCloud. This will allow you both to have separate iCloud information but still have access to all purchased content from iTunes and the App Store.
Set up your Apple ID for iCloud and iTunes - Apple Support
Use one Apple ID for iCloud and a different Apple ID for Store purchases
You can use different Apple IDs for iCloud and Store purchases and still get all of the benefits of iCloud.
    iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
When you first set up your device with iOS 5 or later, enter the Apple ID you want to use with iCloud. If you skipped the setup assistant, sign in to Settings > iCloud and enter the Apple ID you’d like to use with iCloud.
In Settings > iTunes and App Stores, sign in with the Apple ID you want to use for Store purchases. You might need to sign out first to change the Apple ID.
If I have misunderstood the situation or you are still curious about Family Sharing, please refer to the attached article for information on how to set up and use Family Sharing.

  • Family Sharing, iTunes Account NOT Apple ID

I'd like to turn on Family Sharing.
However, it seems the only way to turn on Family Sharing is through my Apple ID on my iOS device
Settings > iCloud > Family Sharing
The issue I have is that my iTunes and App Store purchases are not using my Apple ID. I created a different ID (long time ago) for iTunes. So, all my purchases are with this ID, not my Apple ID.
For example: on my iOS device
Settings > iCloud > [email protected]
Settings > iTunes & App Store > myitunesid (there is no @email.com associated with this ID)
All my iTunes (music and apps) purchases are with myitunesid ID, not with [email protected] ID.
I'm assuming if I active Family Sharing with my iCloud (actual Apple ID), there won't be any purchases associate with the account. Nor will there be, as long as I keep using the myitunesid account.
    Hope this makes sense.

Yes, in fact it's recommended that you do.  you can create separate iCloud accounts with separate Apple IDs and still share the same iTunes ID (the IDs do not have to be the same).  You should also use separate IDs for iMessage and FaceTime to avoid getting each other's text messages and FaceTime calls.  Using your individual iCloud IDs for iMessage and FaceTime will accomplish this.

  • Family Sharing music download error

I Just set up a family sharing group with my brother, and we can share apps, but when I try to download his music, I receive an error stating the fioe cannot be downloaded. He has the same problem with my music purchases. It's only the music that has this issue. App sharing is working fine. is anyone else experiencing this problem? Please help.

    Howdy mrscaskin,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you recently setup Family Sharing and are seeing an alert when trying to download a past purchase from the iTunes Store. The article linked below will explain the alert you’re seeing and provide information about using Apple IDs with multiple devices.
iTunes Store: Associating a device or computer to your Apple ID
When you turn on iTunes Match or Automatic Downloads, or when you download past purchases on an iOS device or computer, that device or computer becomes associated with your Apple ID. Your Apple ID can have up to 10 devices and computers (combined) associated with it, with a maximum of 5 computers at any time. Each computer must also be authorized using the same Apple ID. Once a device or computer is associated with your Apple ID, you cannot associate that device or computer with another Apple ID for 90 days. You can view which devices or computers are currently associated with your Apple ID, remove unused devices or computers, and view how many days remain before the devices or computers can be associated with a different Apple ID from the Account Information page in iTunes on your computer:
    Open iTunes.
Sign in to your Apple ID by choosing Store > Sign In from the iTunes menu.
Choose Store > View My Account from the iTunes menu.
From the Account Information screen, click Manage Devices.
Next to each device or computer name, you will be able to see when each device or computer was associated with your Apple ID. You will also be able to track how many days remain before your associated devices or computers can be associated with a different Apple ID.
    I hope this helps.

  • Unable to download "Not Shareable" app on their own from the App Store once Family Sharing enabled

    iOS 8.0.2 iPhone 6
I finally decided to take advantage of Family Sharing and it has (unfortunately) created a few problems in trying to solve others.
Apparently there are Apps deemed "Not Shareable" (see image below).
These Apps will not appear in the Purchased list of your Shared Family member; which makes sense even though I do not understand why it is so…especially Free apps.
However, the problem is the App Store itself is also affected by the Purchased History. This results in "Free" and "Buy" buttons of all Apps (purchased previously by your family member) being replaced with download from the cloud buttons even though you have not ever purchased the app with your Apple ID.
You will then get the following error every time you try and download the "Not Shareable" App from the App Store directly (as an independent purchase):
In other words, for example, the Amazon App is a free app but it is labeled "Not Shareable." Fine, I would like to buy it on it's own with a my Apple ID from the App Store (independently of whatever my family members bought). I cannot! I will get the above error every time. A work around is using a desktop and iTunes but it didn't work the first time…so keep trying. And Apple, please help/fix ASAP!

Thanks for the responses.  I actually ended up turning off Family Sharing because I found this to be really annoying, and for other reasons.  I was able to download Uber for my wife from iTunes on her PC laptop with Automatic App Downloads turned on on her iPhone.
The other problem I'm having, and the reason I switched off Family Sharing, is with store credit.  I have a lot of gift card credit on my account, but when my family makes purchases, the gift card credit is not deducted first before charging my card.  Not sure if there is a way to change that but I couldn't figure it out.

  • When I try to set up family sharing I get "This account is already shared by another family member. Family sharing works best if every family member uses their own account." how do I reset?  I can't find where it is being used.

    Hi jmeckoll1,
It sounds as if you are trying to set up family sharing starting with an Apple ID which someone has already used to start a family group. Presumably this person is within the family group you want to share with. One solution to this issue would be to ask to join this family group. See this article -
OS X Yosemite: Join a family
If this is not the desired result, you will need to set up your own family group using an unused Apple ID that is in use for iCloud. See this article -
OS X Yosemite: Set up Family Sharing
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
