IOS 8 update via OTA bricked my iPhone 4s. Error 2006

iOS 8 update via OTA bricked my iPhone 4s. Error 2006
Done a update on my iPhone 4s 64GB phone. done it over the air then comes up in recovery mode.  so plugged in iTunes (most up today on a macbook pro) downloaded IOS8 again then when i do a restore it comes up with the error message "The iPhone "IPhone" could not be restored. an unknown error occurred (2006)
Computer: macbook pro  15" mid 2012
2nd computer: just been rebuild with windows 7 on it all up today and latest iTunes,
Cable: 3nd Party
Cable: Apples down brand only 2 days old as bought this one for in the office, (and seems to work with backing up my iPhone on to my macbook pro)
also restarted the machines and checked again for any updates  nothing els plugged in to any of the laptops and it makes no change still get the same error message.
anyone have any clue what is going on.
also i have never called my iPhone "iPhone" (from the error message) must of been a bad install of ios8 (OTA) to bring that name up.

My Iphone 5 got stuck right after I installed iOS8 also.  Mine would not let me past the Hello page.  I had an iCloud backup, so this is what I did.
Downloaded iOS 7.1.2 to my computer. http://www.iclarified.com/750/where-to-download-iphone-firmware-files-from
Restored My iPhone using iTunes.
-Launch iTunes
-Plug phone into computer and hold down the sleep button and wake button on your phone until it shows iTunes restore
-Hold Shift in windows 7 while you click restore in iTunes
This will erase everything on your phone and install a fresh version of 7.1.2
I had an icloud backup so I applied that to get all my files and settings back.  (you can not apply a backup from iOS7 onto iOS8 so that is why I did everything above)
I then tried to install the iOS8 update from iTunes instead of over the air.  No luck there either.
I guess I will stick with iOS7 untill the next build.
I hope this helps.  Remember if you do not have a backup that includes all your pictures and such don't do this Because all will be lost.
Has anyone else got iOS8 installed just to get stuck on the Hello page?

  • IOS updates via wireless using proxy

When trying to perform on device (iPad and iPhone) iOS updates via wireless and having a proxy configured, the update request is sent direct and not via the configured proxy. In a corporate enviroment the firewall blocks this request. Any ideas?
    Thanks

No, the over-the-air method downloads only the incremental changes to save time and system load, while the wired, iTunes, method only does the complete replacement approach.  You cannot control what each does in the way of downloading.
You might try downloading and saving the file rather than installing, and then make the file available on your server for employees to access rather than download.

I see there is another ios update. I have an iPhone 4S. The last time I updated the ios I lost all my contacts, as I had not been using the iCloud as a backup. I am now apprehensive about the latest update. How can I determine if contacts are backed up?

You should never lose contacts under any circumstances.
Although contacts are included with the iPhone's backup, contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book app on your computer where such important data should be available with or without an iPhone or any cell phone. Not a good idea to depend on a cell phone for such important data which can be lost or stolen or damaged beyond repair.
In addition, there are a number of free email accounts that support syncing contacts over the air including an iCloud account, Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail.
If you are not syncing contacts over the air with an iCloud account and not backing up your iPhone wirelessly with your iCloud account, your iPhone's backup is being updated by iTunes on your computer which is updated as the first step during the iTunes sync process.
With Windoze, contacts can be synced with Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010 along with syncing calendar events, notes, and reminders, or with the address book app used by Outlook Express and by Windows Mail called Windows Contacts for syncing contacts only. With a Mac, contacts can be synced with the Address Book app. This is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.
If the supported address book app on your computer is not used and has no contacts available, before the first sync for this data enter one contact in the supported address book app on your computer. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync for this data, which you want to select.

  • I cannot download an audiobook via ITunes Store on IPhone. Error reads ''unable to download audiobook"

I cannot download an audiobook via ITunes Store on IPhone. Error reads ''unable to download audiobook"

Once I established a better WIFI connection, I solved this problem. I originally suspected it was an IOS-ITunes capability problem. Despite downloading the audiobook, I wasn't able to access it unless I plugged iPhone into Mac.

  • IOS update via iTunes vs via WiFi

Just for my curiosity.  What is the difference between updating the iOS with iTunes vs WiFi?
the reason why I am asking this because I read somewhere that sometime users have issue after the update their iOS over WiFi.  Same user that update to the same iOS via iTunes does not have the same issue.  I am talking about Battery Life, or Wifi Problem, or BlueTooht Issue, or Software Bug.
It is possibile that there is a minimum differece in software when the updated is maded over the WiFi vs iTunes?
    Thank you

The OTA updates provides a delta update only while iTunes provided the whole build.
Some users have issues after installing the whole build with iTunes as well. If there is a problem after installing the delta update OTA, restoring the iPhone with iTunes to install the whole build for the update may resolve the problem.
I have installed all iOS updates OTA since the option became available and I haven't experienced any problems after doing so yet.

  • IOS 5.1.1 bricked my iPhone 4

I recently tried updating my "never jailbroken" iPhone to iOS 5.1.1 and it went into recovery mode. Nothing that myself or the Apple Geniuses could do to get it to update or restore. No problem with the Hardware as per the Apple Genius just software. Due to the phone being Out Of Warranty but less than a year old I have to pay for a replacement.
2 calls to the Apple store Rideau to talk to a manager and no call back after 6 days. Customer service at its finest.
I am not very impressed with Apple due to the fact that is was an official software update that bricked my iPhone and not a hardware or user error.
Has anyone else had this issue and if so have you done anything special to have Apple cover the replacement cost.

Something doesn't add up. The iPhone comes with a 1 year warranty from the original purchase date.
Unless you are not the original owner or if there is user damage.
Where did you get this phone from?

  • Trying to Download IOS Update via ITunes

Hi.....I have an IPhone 4. Im not able to download the most recent IOS7.0.6 update via wireless and am trying to update via ITunes.Phone is plugged in to PC.  I have verified that I have the latest version of ITunes. However, when I go to file-devices,  Backup is greyed out and the only option is "Restore from Backup". What am I doing wrong??

    FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note:
    1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
    2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.
    3. Repeat the process if necessary.

  • 3.1 update on Windows bricked my iPhone

There are serious problems with the new iTunes 9 and 3.1 iPhone update.
    1) The 3.1 update bricked my iPhone when iTunes hung at the "installing software" phase (100% CPU, no I/O for 2 hours). I could not kill the iTunes process and had to reboot. After that point I could not restore the previous version (not eligible) or install 3.1. After an hour on the phone with Apple support I ended up having to take it to the local Apple Store (another 2 hour odyssey) and they were able to restore the phone to factory defaults with 3.1
    2) While attempting to restore my backup it quit saying that the iPhone had been disconnected -- I wasn't even near it when this happened. The screen was dark, so I assume the iPhone timed out and locked itself, which shouldn't happen during a restore.
    3) The next attempt to restore failed with the message "iTunes: Attempting to copy to the disk named JHG failed. The disk could not be read from or written to" - AGAIN, the phone had locked itself in the middle of the update.
    I still don't have a working iPhone.

    Update
After two failed restores, iTunes had deleted my good backup from last night and replaced it with corrupted partial backups of partially completed restores.
A second call to AppleCare got me to "Jonathan", who was much more helpful.
He told me where to find the backup images, and I was able to delete the bad ones and restore the good image from my overnight Retrospect backup.
Restoring this image to the iPhone worked, and everything's back to normal with a couple of minor exceptions (email config, lock code). If I hadn't had a backup of the good config I would have been completely out of luck. Sounds like the algorithm for discarding previous backups needs to be rethought in the context of failed restores and/or failed backups.

  • IOS Update via Device Manager - 2960 S and X Series Succeed, Others Fail

    Hello,
I am doing a round of IOS updates on a small LAN with a mix of 2960, 2960S, and 2960X switches.  I have been using the built-in Device Manager, selecting the Software Upgrade option on the toolbar.  So far the 'S' and 'X' series switches have upgraded successfully.  The 2960 (WS-C2960-24TC-L) series have thus far all failed.
With this failing switch type I select the appropriate .tar, as usual, click the Upgrade button, and wait.  In every case the process hangs at step 1. 'Loading the tar file to the switch'.  I am trying to upgrade this failing switch type to 15.0.2-SE7.  The switches to be upgraded are currently at firmware versions ranging from 12.2.(50)SE1 to 12.2(55)SE7.
Is anyone aware of any known issues with this series of switches that may cause IOS upgrades to hang in this fashion?
    Thank You,

  • After update to iOS 7.1.2 after iOS update to 7.1.2 iPhone 4s has troubles playing videos. What can i do?

So i did update to iOS 7.1.2 and after the update these are my problems:
    - when i want to play a video (out of photos, Facebook, YouTube,..) the video is just a bunch of still frames. Sound is normal.
    - all my music is gone
    - iPhone is way way way slower!!

It never happened to me, but try to Reset the iPhone by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears and ignore the red slider.

  • Ios 8.0.1 bricked my iPhone 6 plus

Can anyone help me out fixing this? I tried downloading is ipsw for 8.0.2 which gets stuck as well a few minutes into the install and its been hours.

Your posts are all time tagged today ... the current version of iOS is 8.1.  iOS 8.0.1 has been obsolete for over a week.
Plug your iPhone into iTunes.  Choose "Check for Update".  Or do Settings > General > Software Update from your iPhone.  Either method should get you iOS 8.1.

  • Does this mean that ios 6.0.1 will be the last ios update for ipad 2 and iphone 4s?

With the release of ios 6.0.2, which is only available for the iphone 5 (and ipad mini) does this mean that ios 6.0.1 will be the last software update for the 4s?

As that was only a bugfix update specific to those devices, no.

  • Why does the iOS update not extend to the iPhone 3G ? I would like to use iCloud on all my devices but can't on my iPhone.

I have updated my lap top and my iPad to iOS but my iPhone won't update. I find this really frustrating.

Sometimes that is a business decision, sometimes technology driven.  Operating systems and software get to a point where hardware is not capbable of using the software effectively so it is not supported.  This has happened a few times in the life of various Mac OS versions.
It's frustrating but not much we individual users can really do about it.

  • IOS UPDATE DELETED EVERYTHING ON MY IPHONE

While updating to IOS6, my iphone crashed, and asked me to plug it into the computer. In doing so, iTunes used that to overwrite my backup, and now I have lost every picture and conversation I had on my phone... I am very very frustrated right now! Any help?

    Restore from backup. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
If you imported your pictures to your PC you can sync it back using iTunes. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083

  • Cannot get updates via OTA

Got he TB in May. It was a replacement of my original one within 14 days as the bottom panel was popping out in my first phone. The VZW rep at the store when he activated the phone accidentally started a FW upgrade and cancelled it by pulling the battery. I have no issues with the phone except, it doesn't do anything when I check for new updates. I am still on the factory original FW. Never got the June update, the July fix for the rebooting issue of the June update and never got the Sept. Gingerbread update. Now that the fixed GB is rolling out, I have been trying to pull the update by checking the update. I get the small window saying checking for updates and then the window just vanishes in 5 or so seconds. I checked out my friends' TBs and they all roll a OTA message on the top bar and then come back and say there are no updates but my phone never goes in OTA mode so I am not sure if its even checking for updates.
I have spent more than 2 hours on separate days with VZW tech support and they keep telling me that its a HTC issue and HTC is responsible for the roll outs and even though my phone doesn't go in OTA mode, I should be getting the push. I did tell 'em that I didn't get any other pushes so why would I get it now since its not going in OTA mode at all.
I even called HTC. As expected, they're saying that VZW owns the rollout and they're responsible for the devices getting or not getting updates.
VZW tech support has a fix. Swap the handset for another which I know is going to be refurb. I don't want my handset changed.
Any ideas or more information on how to go about getting this fixed?
Should I just flash the unmodified RUU and be done with it? Should I flash an earlier RUU and see if my phone starts working with OTA or what? I would be happy to accept a replacement handset if its brand new as I feel that this is not my fault and the device is not abused or broken. I only use it as a phone and to check email and FB. I have no apps installed and no games installed either.
Any one have any advice for me?
I have tried the factory reset with the first tech. Tried the "check-in" method and no dice. I have tried forcing the phone into 1X mode and still no dice.
Anyone who has more technical insight care to chime in?

    budone wrote:
Just wondering, have you tried connected to 3G instead?
Yes. Tried in 4GLTE mode, 3G mode and even 1X mode as some site indicate success only in 1X. No dice for me. Just stopped by a VZW store as well as it was across the street from a Kohls I went to. They say I have to deal with Tech Support and that they cannot do anything for me. Seems they're all too happy to order me someone else's used {word filter avoidance} instead of looking what's wrong on what I already have.
