IOS-like spell-check mangling

Wow, this is annoying. Ever since upgrading to Lion I notice my spell-check is no longer just "checking" for me. It's pulling that same crapola that goes on in iOS where it just replaces words whether you want it to or not; usually to comic effect. PLEASE tell me there's a way to defeat this! I've been to (Mail) preferences and the spell-check options don't address this.
This is going on in Mail, certainly, but I imagine it's system-wide. I went to "Help" but it says: "To ignore the suggested word, continue typing as usual." That's nonsense. Not only do I ignore the word, I almost never notice I am being given an otion to what I've typed and the unwanted (usually) option gets inserted. That's what's so frustrating.
I did notice under "Edit" there is a series of spell-check options and it appears I can defeat it per email but it also appears that it's a default that has to be defeated with every new email. Is there no permanent defeat for this?

Whoops! I spoke too soon. It's still doing it! What's odd is that it's doing it inconsistently. Sometimes it decides to leave me alone. Other times I look up and there are words I did not type. I started a dummy email and purposely misspelled things--or tried to--and sometimes it orrected me and sometimes not.
This is specificcaly happenig in Mail but as you cam see it is not corecting thr mistales I am making in thids post. I just dont undrstand.

  • Is there a way for the basic ENGLISH spell check dictionary to auto update? Its really annoying to have to update the spellcheck dictionary everytime FF updates

Every time FF updates, it forces me to download and install the spell check dictionary for English. It makes me just choose to use another browser since more often than not its opening facebook and I like spell check when I use fb. Is there any solution?

What Firefox locale do you use?
Is that the en-US version or another locale like the French locale?
You shouldn't lose installed dictionaries and other installed extensions when you update Firefox unless you would reset Firefox or a new profile got created for other reasons like problem with the profiles.ini file.
Are there otherwise problems with updating that you notice?
Note that in case you do not need all four French dictionaries then you can remove others and only keep the ones you need.
You can find the dictionary files in the dictionaries folder of the extension in the extensions folder in the Firefox profile folder or possibly in the Firefox program folder if you use a French Firefox locale (don't know if that locale includes a dictionary).

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • Spell Checker in Projector

    Hi all,
I've built an application and want to include a spellcheck
function - If I have it as a web page based app, then no problem -
I've got a cracking spellchecker application that works a treat.
BUT because of the nightmare of deploying a web based app onto
local machines due to the F8 security protocols,I'm deploying it as
a projector...but my spellchecker is web only.
Incidentally the app works offline and stores data in shared
objects, then uploads it when back online - hence the need for
    local deployment.
So....Does anyone know of any spellchecker that you can
    integrate into F8 projector?
    Cheers
    Phil

Yes, English is selected...but you inadvertently just gave me the solution. It turns out the document I was checking had no errors, and rather than giving me a window saying something like spell check completed, it was simply giving the error sound. I feel like a bit of an idiot, but thanks...

  • Ios spell check problem

I have some big problem with ios spell check specially on safari and yahoo forums and alike
1- sometimes , very often but not always, when i click on a word to be corrected.. The correction options flash for a minute and then immediately switch to options. like copy paste.. suggest.. Select etc..
I click on suggestion.  The corrections flash for a second and the immediately switch to copy select suggestion... Not giving me a chance to pick the correction!
2- it learns miss spelled words  and suggests misspelled words as correction..... Real annoying and confusing.
3- sometimes it does  not even detect a wrong word and underline it with red... I have to review my whole text and pick out misspelling .. Those i can recognize.
Anyone have any solutions to these problems !

    Pjl.. Thanx for your input.
No... So far i have only noticed it on yahoo finance forums.(. The corrections popping out and disappearing real quick problem)
But the misspelled words not being underlined and misspelled words being added to the dictionary and offered as correction happens everywhere!
How does a word end up being added to  the dictionary? Why would one not get an alert before the word is added..
As terrible of a speller as i am .. My dictionary must be filled with junk words now!
Do u know who this procedure works?
All in all are you guys happy with apple spell checker? Do u guys think it is intelligent enough and has good contextual word recognition/ recommendation algorithm!?
Why should google be able to do a much better job of making recommendations to a misspelling.?
I often resort to coping a misspelled word to google to get correct recommendations when apple says there are no replacement found  and cant recognize the intended word .  But with google no problem... Same exact misspelled word get recognized and corrections are recommended,
Are u guys experiencing the same?

  • Spell check broken after IOS 6.0.1 update

After updating one of our iPads to 6.0.1 the spell checking no longer works.  All of the settings (under keyboard) relating to spell checking, capitalization, "." are ON but none of these features work in any program.  I powered off the iPad and restarted it but these features no longer work.  I tried turning the features off and then on but no luck here.  Our other iPad and both iPhones are on IOS 6.0 and these features work just fine.  I don't plan to upgrade to 6.0.1 on these devices until we determine what broke in the 6.0.1 update.  Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated.

Ok, this is a bit wierd.  After  ckuan's reply, I was going to try the suggestion.  When I turned on the iPad, before trying the suggestion, I find that spell checking is working as it should.  The iPad had ben on standby for several days but not completely powered off.  Don't you just love "self fixing" issues.  Wished I knew exactally what happened.  Anyway, thanks ckuan for the suggestion.

  • How to use Spell-check functionality for textbox (like Orkut, gtalk)

How to use Spell-check functionality for tex Hello Friends,
I am working on a JSP application. I wanted to add Spell check for text box like we have here, when we post a message. It automatically shows red line under the word, when ever spelling is wrong. Please tell me how I can do this. If possible, the code too.
    Thanks.

I believe the spell checking you see here, or on any other site, is the spell checking built into Firefox. At least that's what I see. Are you using Firefox?

  • Spell checker like the one in ie7

has anyone yet made a spell checker like the one used in internet explorer? this program called iespell this one works so good but the ones for Firefox are a lot harder to use. if someone has modified iespell or made a program that copies iespell a link to the program would help.

    Hi Guys,
Right now I think that the control <b>cl_wfd_html_text_viewer</b> would do the job, but I need first documentation or examples in order to learn how to build tables or add input fields in HTML.
    Any suggestion?
    Regards,

  • Spell checker in Pages for iOS - other than english

    Hello,
I'm trying to get spell checking in Pages for iOS working in another language besides english. My question is- is spell checker in Pages for iOS evailable in any other language besides english? Because it doesn't seem to be- once I change keyboard to another language (even matching system language), Pages stops underlying errors in that keyboard language.
    Thanks.

Spellcheck/autocorrect follows the keyboard (system language is irrelevant).  Please tell us what language exactly is not working for you.

  • I would like to go back to my old version. Version 4 does not support my Afrikaans spell checker etc.

Most of my work is done in Afrikaans en therefore my spell checker is vital to me. Your latest version is not compatible to the available spell checker and so I would like to revert back to the older version.
    Kind Regards
    Stephanie

A spell checker that works in Firefox 3.6 should also work in Firefox 4.0 even if not listed as compatible.
You can force Firefox to install the spell checker or re-enable it if it has been disabled by installing the Add-on Compatibility Reporter extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter

  • No option to enable spell check on IOS 8.1.3

My mother and I recently both upgraded to iphone 6. She immediately did a software update to IOS 8.1.3, but I did not. We use spell check when writing in English because it is our second language. Now she does not have the option to turn on/ enable spell check at all (with IOS 8.1.3). I was just wondering if there is any way at all to turn on spell check with IOS 8.1.3, otherwise I won't be updating my software. Or is there something we candownload to help with this issue?

Go to Settings>General>Keyboards   You will find the "Check spelling" button there.

  • Ios 4 no home screen adjustment or spell check

I've just upgraded my 3GS to ios 4 but some features are not available.
I can't change the wallpaper on the home screen. I've seen a demo on how to do it and I don't get the option of picking either the start up wallpaper or the home screen wallpaper.
I also couldn't find the spell check, but just read the thread below and will try this.

  • Auto correct is making me look like an idiot. I have to go back and psychically spell check my documents now. Is there any way to disable it?

Auto correct on my desktop Mac is making me look like an idiot. After I type it's changing words into other words I never typed and it even pushes words together that I'd typed a space in between in order to create new words that I never typed which make absolutley no sense.
Now after I type a document I have to go back and psychically spell check my entire document the old fashioned way to make sure auto-correct isn't making me look like a clown who can't spell.
Is there any way to disable "auto correct" on the desktop MAC and still keep spell check running?
The amount of messages I've sent out with horribly misspselled words or errrors as a result  is maddening.
    HELP!!!
    Running OSX 10.9.1

I had turned off auto-correct in the keyboard preferences, but in Mail all my spelling and grammer choices were grayed out.  The key for me — as Kingoftypos points out — was "For Mail, open a new message/reply/forward. Then go to the Edit menu and scroll down to the Spelling/Grammar."
It would never have occurred to me to open a new message to be able to change the settings.
    Thanks, King

  • I'd like to add words to the spell check

For instance, I'm tired of being corrected with "meet up" every single time I'm typing "meetup". I'd rather keep spell check on (System Preferences > Language & Text > Text) but I'd also rather be able to add words to my spell checking dictionary. SOL?

Create a sliver of your gradient image and let it tile
    vertically or
horizontally to fill the page (depending on whether the
    gradient is a
    vertical or horizontal one).
    And a posteriori, you're welcome!

  • I'd like a spell checker that'll work in 8.1?

Hey all, I had a spell checker for FF, updated it seems to have gone

The built in spelling checker works fine, but may need some attention to some details first. I use it and I also use an extension that checks spelling and Grammar.
    Spelling Check: SpellCheck:
:Firefox has a built-in spelling checker see
    *http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/tab_capacity/001_with_underscore.htm#spellcheck
    *http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/tab_capacity/001_with_underscore.htm#spellcheck_jumpstart
Once set up, you will see wavy lines under misspelled words. Right-click on the identified word to replace with corrected spelling or to add to the dictionary.
After fixing your spell checker and waiting a couple days so you are sure it is working properly with nice red wavy lines under misspelled words, I would install the extension that checks your spelling and grammar. For spelling the built-in spell checker is better.
