IOS Mail permanently deletes messages

I've noticed several times that the iOS mail client occasionally does an unprompted permanent-delete of messages in my trash can. There's a similar complaint about it from 2008 (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1362228?start=15&tstart=0).
I've got the following setup:
iOS 6.1.2
Gmail account via Exchange
Here are the steps that occurred:
Opened Mail to view new messages in inbox
Deleted several messages (sent them to trash)
Inadvertently deleted a message I wanted to keep
Went to trash folder, which started a download of the most recent contents of my trash folder
Saw the messages I just deleted
The download of my trash folder completes, causing the messages I just deleted to get permanently deleted
I can't see the messages I deleted anywhere, not in the Gmail app, nor in the Gmail web client.
I've never seen this behavior in any other client except for iOS Mail. I'm not sure if it's issue with the app, the way it handles the Exchange protocol, or the way Gmail talks to the Exchange protocol. Any ideas? This seems like really bad bug.

I have no idea what or why this happened!
All of a sudden, I'm able to delete read mail and have it appear in the trash (as it should) and am able to read it there, and remain there, until I want to permanently delete it!!!
I'm convinced this had to be an Apple problem but really haven't seen anything confirming this.
Note:
Even though I was unable to see the mail in the trash it was still on my comp. I just had to hunt for it...Library/Mail/Deleted Messages, so all wasn't lost.
Thanks for all you people do to help us frustrated but happy MAC'ers. I wouldn't trade
my MAC for anything.

  • How to stop iOS7 Mail from deleting messages from server?

Recently I started using an iPhone 5S after over four years with an iPod Touch. The Mail app on the iPhone deletes messages from my server. I do not want it to do this, I cannot find the option to turn off in Settings, and the iOS Mail help page at Apple Support is for an older OS version. Insight and advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think I figured out a workaround at least.  It appears that the "Power Nap" feature is doing the mail checking.  Although the concise descriptions of Power Nap say it "allows your Mac to do things like periodically check for new mail, calendar, and other iCloud updates" (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5394?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US), it apparently doesn't just allow these actions, it does them -- regardless of your mail settings.  I suspect this is a bug.
Turning off Power Nap (in the Energy Saver panel in System Preferences) stopped the unwanted mail fetching, but unfortunately that also means that I don't get the benefit of the other activities it does, like Spotlight indexing. There are two places to turn it off, one for the "Battery" tab and one for the "Power Adapter" tab.
Since Power Nap was introduced with Mountain Lion, but I never had the problem until Mavericks, I assume that either (1) Power Nap was off by default in Mountain Lion but is on by default in Mavericks, or (2) this is another of several Mail problems introduced by Mavericks.

  • Httmpmail messed up Mail. Deleted messages stay in inbox now.

Alright, I already had Daniel Parnell's httpmail hotmail plugin installed. I saw he had a newer version and downloaded and installed accordingly. Then when I opened Mail, I saw that all my messages for the past two days were gone. Also, when I delete a message from my inbox in Mail, it greys out but still stays there, not moving to Trash.
I went into library>mail>bundles and deleted the httpmail plugin and restarted Mail but still have the same problem. I dont care about the stupid plugin now, I just want my messages back and want my Mail program to operate correctly again.
What can I do to fix this?

Try rebuilding your Mail index like this:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Go to ~/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file(s).
    3. Restart Mail and wait for it to import your existing mail. When that's done, everything should be back to normal.

  • Mac mail automatically deletes messages from two weeks prior

I'm using Mac Mail on 10.6.8 - snow leopard. I use this program for my work emails and mail will automatically delete messages in my Inbox that are two weeks old. The email account is IMAP. I have looked in the "Account Preferences/ Advanced" and can not find a setting to correct this. What am I missing?

Are you sure it's Mail that's doing this? It could be on the other end (the server end).
Mac Mail has a preference for "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message", but there's no choice for 2 weeks, so I doubt that's it.

  • HT3376 I have a Yahoo plus account. When I set up the mail account the Bulk Mail (Trash), Deleted Messages,Draft,Drafts,Junk, and Sent Folders all appear on my iPhone. Is there a way to prevent this?

I have a Yahoo Account. When I set up the mail account the  Bulk Mail, Deleted Messages, Draft, Drafts, Junk, Sent, and Sent Messages appear on all of my iPhones, my PC, my Macbook and any other wifi product that receives mail. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of these duplicate mailbox folders??
    Thanks

I just called apple care to even know how to respond to this answer. I am very old and this was my first post ever. I appreciate you taking the time to give me an answer. I also ask them how to delete this account because every time I log in it wants me to change my password and I have run out of passwords. I don't even know what it means when it ask me the community I want to be in.
The only thing I know about syncing is syncing my iPhone to my MacBook Pro. I apologize that I am so technically stupid. Does mail have syncing???
Thank you even if I never figure out how to get back to this site again.

  • Mountain Lion Mail randomly deletes messages: locally and from server

    Hello,
Mountain Lion Mail deletes mails randomly, locally and from the IMAP server.
I have confirmed this for a fact:
    - I have been forwarded lost mails to another (webmail) account: the timestamps indicate that some mails were lost somewhere before I ever saw them on Mail
    - my mail service provider confirmed that their logs show mails that I never saw on Mail
    - the lost mails don't appear via webmail, either, i.e. they're not on the server
Others are experiencing the same in Lion:
    http://www.seifi.org/email/lion-mail-app-deletes-imap-emails-without-notice-gmai l-important-fix.html
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3206902
I became aware of this as my customer referred on the phone to messages from them that I had never seen. And, Mail deletes messages randomly from the IMAP server too - it's literally eating messages!
No, this is not a rule issue. No, this is not anything I could have done to cause. This should be evident as very many others are experiencing the same (see the above links).
This is the worst bug I've ever encountered in any Apple product.
Apple need to acknowledge this and address it, like, immediately.
Is there a fix for this? One that works 100% - I really can't risk not receiving business e-mail.
    br Janne

I'm experiencing something similar. I see a message being received in Mountain Lion via notification. When I'm going to look for this mail, it's gone.
I dont't have any rules set up and no mail plugins installed. The mail is also vanished from the server. I'm using IMAP on my own web-site (via a service provider). I was able to verify, that a certain message from a certain sender dissapeard, which had a PDF attached. I thought it might have something to do with my ISPs virus protection, but they a) insured me, that they don't delete any mail and b) I got a new mail from someone I don't know this morning. Again: Saw the notification, afterwards the mail is gone.
For now, I will switch to ThunderBird (this was also the recommendation of my ISP).
    Kind regards

  • Setting parameters for Verizon mail to delete messages

I can no longer find how to adjust when my Verizon mail messages will be deleted from the inbox.  I use Outlook as my mail and it used to be that messages would be deleted from the Verizon in box when they were deleted from my Outlook deleted items.  Suggestions?

That is actually a setting within Outlook, not Verizon webmail. Which version of Outllook are you using?

  • Yahoo Mail Plus Deleting Messages ?

The touch apparently does not give you the option of either deleting your Yahoo! messages from the Yahoo! server after downloading them, or leaving them on the Yahoo! server so you can see them online.
When I delete them from the touch they are still available online. Is there a way to change this ?

They don't, they say your other e-mail program should offer this option.
In your Gmail account do you have HTMl images blocked ? If so does this option carry over to the touch ?

  • Can I permanently delete messages without using outside app/website?

Even though I've deleted my messages the usual way on my iPhone 4S, it's not properly deleting them so I've still got 1.4gb of messages stored when I look at usage. Very annoying as I'm running out of space for stuff like music so could really use any extra space, and have no desire to store messages.
Obviously I've searched it up but it seems the only way to get rid of them is using seperate websites like iBackUpBot which I don't really want to do - is there any other way?
I don't know why my messages are being saved, some people seem to think it's a glitch in the iOS from when the phone was first set up?
    Any help would be appreciated!

How did you determine that "1.4gb of messages" is stored - there is no such display. IF you're referromg tp "other" memory, that includes a lot of other things such as the entire iOS and all app data and is about as low as you can get.
The only way to get the "other" a little lower would be to restore the phone using iTunes as new, without restoring a backup.

  • UNABLE TO PERMANENTLY DELETE MESSAGES OFF IPHONE 4

I have read that other people have this problem, but no answer seen.  You delete emails from your phone, delete the trash and then they are still there, not on the computer, just on the Iphone - every email sent since I got my phone.  How do you get rid of the old emails?  I know of other people who didn't know this was happening until I showed them.
Worrying when you think you have deleted sensitve data and it's still there.

If you are using a POP email account and have set your settings to never delete incoming mail from the server it will continue to fetch old emails since they are still on the server.  (With POP accounts, deleting email from your phone doesn't sync back to the server).  If this is the case, to permanently remove them go to your webmail account for your email provider and delete the email there so they can't be re-fetched by your phone.
