IOS' Maps App Improvements?

Hello.
Is it me or is iOS v8.1.3's Maps app still bad like its traffic reports? I thought Apple was going to improve it years ago after they dumped Google Maps (still way better) and stuff.
Thank you in advance.

what is your question?

  • How can I clear the cache of my iOS maps app?

Some portions of my map are not loading properly.  Square spaces have some features like parks and rivers, but no roads.  Is there a way to manually clear the cache of the Maps app without restoring the entire phone?

Are you refering to Internet Browsing ? Then it should be somewhere under Options-->Privacy in the Browser...

  • Can we save satellite images from the Apple ios Maps app?

The Apple Maps app has a more recent image of my property than Google: I'd therefore like to save the satellite image to file. Is this possible?
The only option I can find is the 'Print' command, but this just prints the Standard map without any satellite imagery.
As an alternative, can we view Apple's maps on a standard browser, e.g. Safari ?

You can do a screen capture of the Maps display. Just press the On/Off and Home buttons at the same time (briefly) and you will hear a click. The image can be seen in the photos App.

  • Multiple push pins in iOS maps app?

I would like to chart all the sites I plan to visit on my vacation this weekend.  Is there any way to load all points of interest in so i can select between the pins to navigate?

The map app seems to only want 1 pin at a time.  Spend some time in the app store.  Try the free maps+ app. And see if it does what you want.  The free app supports 3 pins, and if it works to your liking, you can upgrade to a fuller version.  There are a lot of map apps to check out.

  • Why doesn't IOS Maps show a map any more?

So, when I was stuck in New York city for five days last week, I wound up using the new IOS maps app for the first time, on my iphone 4.
It worked fine for a day or two... then, for some reason, it stopped loading maps.
It would show a blue dot where I'm at, and little traffic warnings would appear, but no streets, no nothing.
If I tell it to load satellite views, that works fine, but regualr maps doesn't.
Now that I'm finally back home in LA, it's still doing the same thing.
I've manually closed the app, and done a hard reboot on the phone, and it still does the same thing.
Seriously, having a map app that stops working when you're stranded in a strange city with a hurricane barrelling down on you and you're trying to walk from your power-out old hotel to a new one was no fun...

Sorry I thought you meant that you just closed (suspended) the app.  Unfortunately I haven't heard of this problem before and haven't seen and KB articles on troubleshooting maps.  If closing Maps, then restarting the phone didn't fix it, guess I would make an appointment with the genius bar at a nearby Apple store and have them take a look at it.

  • Any word on a fix for the Maps App?

Haven't wanted to update to new iOS because of maps... new update says nothing about fix for maps... have any of the initial Map App issues been resolved?

Yes, i 'm Apple customer and so they know what I like to buy. Great, I buy more if they produce good products that I like.
The big difference is you are not google customer, you are google asset, the advertiser are their customer. Do I have to tell you more how google do their business? Wake up, all these freebies are there for a reason.
I prefer Apple Maps anytime and it is getting better as we speak.
Oh my, there is little more silly than someone who accuses another of being naive and in doing so, reveal there own naivety.
You didn't know that Apple gathers as much usage data as Google? Really? How do you think they plan to make their maps better? Why do you think they want their own mapping app?
Mapping is huge business and Apple wants some of that action for themselves. That AND Jobs stating that he wanted to go thermo-nuclear on Google are the primary reasons why Google Maps was replaced by Apple Maps.
Of course Google Maps has a business model, of course they collect data on our usage. Who cares? For an amazing line of products that work 99% of the time for the entire world, it is a small price to pay. Besides, for the ultra paranoid, there are many ways to hide your true identity from Google. No so with the Apple phone and Apple apps!
Perhaps I should remind you of this:
    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-05-03/apple-must-face-lawsuit-over-iphone-dat a-collection-claims-1-.html
My primary point is that I am getting tired of Apple dictating what apps I can and cannot have! I am getting tired of Apple denying entry into the iTunes store, 3rd party apps that compete with their own. Even Google is stating that Apple may not allow Google Maps into the iDevice apps ecosystem.

Make no mistake, it is Apple that is the villain in this situation.
And this is no laughing matter for several reasons:
    1) Apple stocks have been on a steady decline since the announcement of the iPhone 5
    2) The FTC may investigate Apple's business practices once again because of the maps issue
    3) People ARE decided NOT to buy into Apple because of these problems
Those in this forum that are quick to say, "get lost, go buy an Android" are not helping Apple. If you think that Apple can't die, you are really naive! Apple can become irrelevant quicker than you think.

  • Although I have been using Google Maps App in India for a while now (without any issues) but I still want to know if there are any plans for launching Turn by Turn Navigation under the OOTB Map App for iOS?

Although I have been using Google Maps App in India for a while now (without any issues) but I still want to know if there are any plans for launching Turn by Turn Navigation under the OOTB Map App for iOS?
It has been quite a while since Apple came up with Map App of their own and should be releasing improved maps with more capabilities in India.
    Cheers!

No one here can answer your question, as there is no one from Apple here, & no one here represents Apple or speaks for Apple.

  • Why did map apps downgrade after upgrading iOS 6?

I expect upgrading OS means every apps got improvement. But why did my google map downgrade into apple map? Does anyone know the reason?

    Google Maps review
The good: Map layers, turn-by-turn navigation, Street View, and offline access make Google Maps almost unbeatable.
The bad: No 3D city view.
The bottom line: With its impressive list of features and syncing of data across other devices, Google Maps is a must-have application for anyone running Android.
As far as mobile mapping goes, the newest version of Google Maps for Android offers one of the most robust experiences you can get. More than a simple piece of mapping software, this feature-fest offers turn-by-turn navigation, voice search, indoor mapping (select locations), public transportation information, Street View, and tons of other conveniences. Further, if you use Google Maps on your other devices while signed in to your Google account, your search history, Places, and custom maps sync seamlessly.

When viewing a location, Google Maps lets you activate a variety of add-on layers offering information like traffic, terrain, transit lines, satellite images, and bicycle routes, among others. There's even a Wikipedia layer that plots out entries related to your location, which is great for curious travelers. If you've made any custom maps on your Google account, you can overlay those as well.
If the add-on layers aren't enough, Google Maps lets you zoom into satellite photos to get a close look at buildings and street details. You can even activate street view to get a ground-level look at areas that have coverage. Unfortunately, though, the Google Maps app does not come with 3D flyover images baked in. To get these highly detailed images, you'll have to download it's sister app Google Earth. Hopefully at some point, these two titles merge to offer a more streamlined user experience.
One of the most important aspects of Google Maps for Android is directions. The app lets you easily conduct a search for a destination with text or voice, so you can get directions for driving, public transit, walking, or even biking. You can read your route in list form or hit the arrow icon to activate voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation. While traveling you can even fire up alternate routes if you happen to run into traffic.

But Google Maps is a lot more than just a database of geographic information. The application offers other baked-in services like Offers for nearby deals, Local search powered by Google Places and Zagat, and Latitude for locating Google contacts on the map (with their permission, of course). These services in aggregate make for a complete mobile experience that is pretty hard to beat.
Google Maps for Android now lets you cache maps for access while offline. This is hugely useful for travelers who frequently find themselves in areas outside of their home mobile networks. The feature lets you pinch and drag to determine the area you want to cache, and it tells you how much memory the saved file will cost you.

Had it happen on my iphone 4 that I use as an ipod now and I did a complete restore and it fixed the problem. I did do the over the air update the first time and this time I did it by connecting to itunes.

  • How to Replace New Maps app on ios 6 with Google Maps?

Can someone please  provide the procedure to replace the new maps app on ios 6 with Google Maps?
    Thank you

You can still use Google’s maps — on the Web. Visit maps.google.com and accept the offer to create a Home-screen icon for you. You won’t get spoken directions, but you’ll get written directions, public transportation details, live traffic reports and, of course, Google’s far superior maps and data. (In two weeks, you’ll be able to get Street View this way, too, says Google.) And you can install the Google Plus Local app for full access to Google’s more complete database of shops and businesses.
You can also use someone else’s app. Many good ones cost money, but the MapQuest and Waze apps are free and offer spoken directions; Waze also incorporates real-time information about traffic jams, accidents and speed traps, collected by thousands of iPhones and Android phones on the roads.
If you can wait a couple of months, you’ll be able to install Google’s own maps app; Google is busily readying one for the iPhone and iPad.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Since upgrading to iOS 8.3 the maps apps on my ipad do not show current location from my gps

Since upgrading to iOS 8.3 the maps apps on my ipad do not show current location from my gps DUALXGPS150A
The data is still being received by the ipad but not appearing on any of the maps.
Everything was working fine before the upgrade.

    Hi davidisleta,
If you are having issues with your iPad not showing location information, you may want to try some things to troubleshoot.
First, quit all running applications and test again -
Force an app to close in iOS
Next, I would try restarting and if needed resetting the iPhone -
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If the issue is still present, you may want to restore the iPhone as a new device -
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Maps app on iPhone5 with iOS 7.1 is not announcing directions with sound turned on

My Maps app has stopped announcing directions. iPhone 5, iOS 7.1 with latest updates. Location services is turned on. Sounds are turned on. Volume is set to Loud in the Maps app. Cellular Data is turned on for Maps. I tried resetting my phone per the instructions online and nothing has helped so far. Any ideas?

After much trial and error I finally figured this out. It has to do with the starting location. The starting location must be "Current Location" in order for Maps to announce turn-by-turn directions. In other words you have to start by entering your destination address, and then select "directions to here", which sets the from location to "current location". I had dropped a pin on my home, which is the same starting address as "current location", so should have given me the same result, but for some reason when you type in the actual address of your current location for the starting location, it does not activate the voice control for turn-by-turn navigation. I have tried this two or three times and every time when I enter the starting location, Maps does not announce directions, but when I let it calculate my current location it does. Even when location services are turned on for Maps in both cases. Can't understand the logic here or why Aplle would program it this way, but it is what it is. If anyone else is having this issue, I hope this helps.

  • What will happen to the maps app of my 1st generation iPad once iOS 6 is released?

My iPad won't be able to upgrade to iOS 6. Will the maps app still get data from Google? Will it be a dead link on my home screen? Or will Apple delete it?

The Google Maps app is baked into iOS 5, therefore it will stay on your iPad. If you were to buy or upgrade a product with iOS 6 you wouldn't see Google Maps.
