IOS not updating play count. What's up with that?

The play count on iTunes does not seem to be functioning correctly. Anybody else experiencing this or have some suggestions on how to fix this?
The play count updates fine but only when I am playing it directly from my computer or streaming it with "Home Sharing". When I listen to a song on my iPhone 5s, iPad 3, or iPhone 4 (had it laying around so used it as a test) it does not increase the play count on my computer once I sync the device. I always make sure that I am running the most up to date software so that is not the problem.
I'm running:
iTunes:        11.1.5
iPhone 5s:   7.1
iPad 2:         7.1
iPhone 4:     7.0 (only device not completely up to date)
This has become a bit frustrating for me.
Has anybody else experience this or know how to solve it?
Thanks,
Michael

Way late replying to this, but I've found the syncing of play counts to be very unreliable. It does sometimes happen - as best I can tell, what makes a difference is syncing twice. The first time often doesn't do much; the second time syncs information over.
Details: I don't have iTunes Match turned on; I only sync manually, with a cable. I turned off wireless sync a couple of years ago because it seemed to be even more flaky.

I'm using the correct APPLE ID and password for Home Sharing on my computer but my AppleTv is not accepting it?  What's up with that???

I have the exact same issue. I also tried resetting my password. I can log in to iTunes on my laptop with the new password, on to my iPhone iTunes, but my Apple TV says it cannot recognize my password. I just did an Apple Tv software update a few days ago.
I am able to log in to Netflix on my Apple TV just fine. I did not have to re-enter my password for that.
Very frustrating. I hope Apple can figure this out soon and post a fix.
    Thanks for any advice.  Cheers.

  • New nano not updating play counts - any help would be greatly appreciated!

I purchased a new nano (7G) yesterday. When I play music (and plug it back into my computer) the play count / last played does not update on my computer. I've tried restoring and turning sync on and off again (I use manual update) to no avail.
I didn't have this issue with my old iPod, so it shouldn't be a problem with iTunes. The play count does go up according to the nano's display, but it doesn't transfer to my computer's play counts. I also tried an old suggestion of playing a podcast for 30 seconds before plugging it, but that didn't work either.
Using 10.6.8, and iTunes 10.7. I hope I'm just missing something simple. Thanks!

I found this about what I think is the same problem I had, although mine was with my iphone but think it could be useful. I think my issue was that i had put my girlfriends phone on first so when i put mine on, it prioritised the original one. Not sure anyway, but sounds similar and for now it has been fixed.
Right Click on your iphones name and click sync one more time, when this is done, click on your music folder under your iphones name you will get this message "You have changed the settings for the iPhone “dermott o'donnell’s iPhone”. Would you like to apply these changes?" click apply
and the play count should be updated, my music is managed manually as well

  • 1st gen ipod Shuffle not updating play count for songs

I've noticed since I updated to the iTunes version 7.2.035 that plugging in and updating the library with my iPod shuffle no longer updates the play count for the songs I've listened to. Is there a known fix for this? Anyone else experiencing the same problem with their 1st gen ipod shuffle (512)?

Well, I have that problem too. My shuffle holds about 125 songs or so, yet I've noticed there are always a good 20 or so songs that won't play, no matter how many times I load them onto the device. I have had that problem since I inherited it from a friend.
My new problem is that every time I plug my iPod into iTunes, it no longer updates the playcount for songs. In other words, if I load a song that I've heard 3 times, hear it twice during the day, and replug in my iPod at night, it used to update that song's playcount in the library to 5, but now they still read 3. It's also failing to update the "date last played" field.
I use those to help make sure that I don't load the same songs over and over again by creating a custom playlist that will comb out songs played in the last few days and have a very high play count. Since these are no longer updating, I've noticed that I keep arriving at work only to find my iPod has the same or similar songs as the day before, and dude, if I wanted that, I'd listen to the radio!

  • When i touch a icon to play a game it jumps and doesn't load to play.. what's up with that? i am new to the Ipod 4g so i don't know why it's doing this.

I have a iPod touch 4g and when i touch a icon to play a game, all it does is jump and won't do a thing. What am i doing wrong?

  • After I sign in, Apple welcomes me, but, I am NOT signed in. What's up with that?

After I clicked the "post" button, I was GAIN redirected to the login page. This time I was actually really logged in (it said (sign out) after my name) so that's how I could post this. However, it seems a bit of a drag to have to start a topic in order to succesfully log in. Is it some glitch since the large maintenance period from last weekend?

And why can I not edit after posting?

  • OFM certification question -- partners only ?   What's up with that?

    1. Please explain why OFM 11 certification is only available to Partners.
The way it reads right now, to simply look at the certification path for Oracle
Fusion Middleware, one has to pay a minimum of $500 to join the Partner Network.
    2. It also appears that the certification is intended to certify a company, not an
individual. What's up with that ?
This is especially disturbing because some big Oracle customers, like the US govt,
require individuals to be certified in their basic job function. For those of us
in middleware, that would be an OTN cert.
If I am interpreting this correctly, this means that longtime pros, to keep up with
certification, would have to indenture themselves to a Partner company in order to be
    allowed access to the program.

    2) If this link refers to the certification you were concerned about : http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=391 then I believe this is an Oracle OCS certification open to everyone.
    3) Some of the web pages describng OCS certiifcations have Oracle Partnet Network confusingly emphasied on them, this was (is?) a known issue.
Some threads have commented on this in the past and unfortunately I dont have time to search through them to to locate the certification definitively that you are questioning about.
The big emphasis on e the OPN certifcations are because Oracle Partners are required to have a number of people holding OPN Certifications in order to reach the higher partnership levels.
Please be aware this is a rshed explation and not necessarily accurate. A link to the page describing the certification you have located would be useful.

  • My iTunes doesn't keep track of my listening history anymore. It doesn't update play counts and default "Recently Played" playlist.

My iTunes doesn't keep track of my listening history anymore. It doesn't update play counts and default "Recently Played" playlist. But it still tracking plays from my iPhone and syncing them.
I've tried to repair it with setup file. Nothing's changed.
Can you help me with that?
NOTE: Now I tried disabling the crossfade feature and it worked, started to count again. But I like crossfade, I don't want to keep it off.

I think I got this figured out. The playcount does update, but not how the previous iPod models update their playcount. Instead of immediately updating the playcount right after you finish the song like the older iPod models, iPod Touch keeps the updates in memory. The next time you connect to iTunes it'll sync those playcounts in memory to the actual songs itself, effectively updating the playcount of the songs only after connecting to iTunes. I have set my syncing manually. That's why after connecting to iTunes, my playcounts are updated. BUT it doesn't solve the mystery of my Smart Playlist. Even though in iTunes, the correct songs are listed, in the iPod Touch, it shows the old playlist.
Don't you just hate that? It was working fine before on non-iPod touch models. Now we have to live with this new bug. I just hope when they release software 2.0 it fixes these bugs and that they *give it for free!* People shouldn't be charged on something they should have gotten as a support!

  • I have new IPad ...can't watch rented downloaded movie on my tv..error message is " The connected display is not authorized to play protected movies"... What is up with that???

I have new IPad ...can't watch rented downloaded movie on my tv..error message is " The connected display is not authorized to play protected movies"... What is up with that???

I had exact same problem and I have found a way to get round out!!!! Easy!
So the reason it doesn't allow it to play is for security to stop piracy etc.
Plug in the cable and VGA and aux cable and get everything set up so you are looking at the home screen.
    1) select Videos
    2) selected the film you want to watch
    3) click the little play button
    4) it will then come up with the message saying it can't play protected films blah blah blah
    5) WITHOUT clicking ok double tap the home button to bring up the multitasking bar and swipe left to reveal the control panel
    6) hold fast forward for a second or two and the movie with continue to play!
Stay in the multi tasking bar with the control panel, The message will stay there but don't worry. Kick back and enjoy your iPad movie on the big screen:)
I'm sure your saying thanks:) it was my pleasure realising I've outsmarted apples little security protection thing lol

i have a app. iBook G4 leptop in which MAC OS X 10.4.11 opreting system. so i can not update any software. what shuld i do...

I suppose all you can do is be content with the limitations of your old iBook G4 running Tiger. It would be possible to upgrade to 10.5 Leopard, but I would not recommend doing that because that secondhand software is quite expensive, so giving little improvement over what you have.
If you desire a more modern operating system, you will need a more modern 'Intel' computer. I expect you realise that and are simply seeking confirmation of that.

  • I've just found that three movies I've bought from iTunes on on my iPad are not showing up on Apple TV or anywhere other than that iPad.  What's up with that and will I lose these films if I reset this iPad?

Thanks.  The reason this has become an issue is that I recently bought a new Macbook Air that the iPad is not synced to.  The one is was synced to was stolen.  If I want to sync this iPad to the new Air, won't it be wiped before I'm able to copy these films or am I wrong about that?

  • Can not update iTunes because I have iMac with 10.5.8 . How I will sync my iphone 6.0 with an older version of iTunes on my iMac???? There is no update for the software of my iMac and no update for the iTunes.... So how can I sync????

Can not update iTunes because I have iMac with 10.5.8 . How I will sync my iphone 6.0 with an older version of iTunes on my iMac???? There is no update for the software of my iMac and no update for the iTunes.... So how can I sync????

    Requirements for iPhone 5:
Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:
Mac: OS X v10.6.8 or later
PC: Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later
    iTunes 10.7 or later
The highest version of iTunes you can install is 10.6.3 which will not sync with the iPhone 5.

It's always a good idea to check the requirements before purchasing.
The person I spoke with at 1-800-MY-APPLE gave me totally different info...she said the iPhone 5 would in fact sync with the older version of iTunes and that I could restore from my previous iPhone 4 backup and also bring in my music that way.  Hmmm....
I'm inclined to go by the published specs, but now I have to jump thru a bunch of hoops I wasn't expecting to.

ddmathias, I want to make sure all services are working correctly on your phone. What GPS services were you using before the update happened? What kind of issues are you having with the services? Do you get any kind of errors? Please keep us posted.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox

  • HT1473 iTunes message saying the song names for this cd could not be found online when it's iTunes store, What's up with that?

I just purchased The Very Best Of Eagles CD, Popped it into my drive so excited to own the copy but when I tired to copy it to my Library I get this message saying the song names for this cd could not be found online when it's in the iTunes store, What's up with that?    Is there any way to get track information and artwork without Having to manually inter all the info?

iTunes gets track information from Gracenote's database, so iTunes must be able to reach gracenote.com and the CD must have been entered there by some purchaser already (all CD information in Gracenote is provided by we users). If these are common, commercially-distributed CDs, it may be that there is a firewall or privacy filter blocking access to gracenote.com. If these are unusual, independently-released or rare CDs, they just may not be in Gracenote yet. In the case of a custom CD where it's a compilation, Gracenote probably won't be able to identify them (it goes by complete albums, comparing the number and length of the tracks to try and figure out what album it is).
    Hope this helps.
