IOS Safari wont play quicktime over HTTPS

I have a video that streams from Apache (Mac Web Sharing) OK to Mac OS X Safari and Firefox, and to Safari on my iPhone and iPad.
However, when I put the same video on a Mac OS X Server with SSL enabled (self-crtificated) I can view the video via Mac OS X Safari and other browsers using HTTPS, but not on my iOS devices.
I have recreated this problem on multiple servers and clients, and my client is also seeing the same thing (same video streamed from an IIS/SharePoint server.)
Can anyone shed light on this?

Paul Adams,

Having the same problem. Here should be a solution https://devforums.apple.com/message/361209#361209
It says following:
After experiencing the very same problem and symptoms, I was able to gain access to the Apple Developer Forum thread mentioned here (https://devforums.apple.com/message/361209#361209)
The upshot of the Apple thread is that you must have a valid Intermediate Certificate installed on the server. It is not enough to have only the server certificate installed.
I have tested this with Mac OS X 10.6 Server. I installed the server certificate and while desktop browsers were able to stream a video over HTTPS, iOS devices (iPhone and iPad) both gave the "This movie could not be played" error.
Installing the Intermediate Certificate fixed the problem.
Other devices, like Android phones and tablets, and RIM PowerBook (via Flash) had no problems playing the video without the Intermediate Certificate. I suspect it is a case of iOS being overzealous with its security, a "Feature" if not a bug ;-)
My question is: Where and how do I install the Intermediate Certificate? On the iPhone or on the Apache Server?

  • Safari will not play mp4 over HTTPS

    Hello,
I have a file, sample.html, which contains only the following code:
    <html> <body>
    <video width="600" autoplay loop poster="placeholder.jpg">
    <source src="sample.mp4" />
    </video>
    </body> </html>
The mp4 file referenced is the one downloaded from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1425
When I use Safari to access my page via http://myserver.com/sample.html the video plays without problem.
When I use Safari to access my page via https://myserver.com/sample.html only the placeholder image is displayed.
Using Safari 7.0.6 on Mac OS X 10.9.4
I have used http://www.sslshopper.com/ssl-checker.html to check that SSL is correctly configured for my domain and it reports no problems.
How can I make the video play in Safari when accessed over https?
    Thanks in advance,
    Andy

If you are having problems playing MPEG4 video in Quicktime 7.4 (and Apple are aware that some users have had such problems) you should carefully check in
    /Library/Quicktime and
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins and
    Home/Library/Quicktime
to check whether you have any third party plug-ins that are not completely up to date.
Current versions of Flip4Mac and DiVX and Perian do NOT cause failure alone or in combination. However the one SPECIFIC extension that ALWAYS causes the failure alone or in groups is 3ivxMediaImp. All other 3ivx extensions DO work. Remove only that ONE SPECIFIC extension.
Please try this and see if it fixes your problem with QT Player, the QT Firefox Plugin, and iTunes not playing MPEG4 files (including mp4 files).
Older 3ivx and DivX components are often incompatible with new QuickTime versions and are, in many cases, obviated by component packs like Perian.
This is not the only explanation for issues with MPEG4 file playback in QuickTime 7.4 and later, however. The issue with videos from democracynow.org and others, for instance, is the result of that content not complying with MPEG4 standards (namely that they use bogus track dimensions). QuickTime had previously ignored invalid track dimensions but this was changed in order to support properly authored anamorphic content.
The recent update to QT 7.4.1 has fixed a number of issues but some problems are unavoidable when working with non-standards compliant content. The standards are important for many reasons including keeping hackers from manipulating improperly coded web pages.
However, there is a workaround (also the basis for why those files will still play in iTunes): there are a few ways to trick QuickTime into ignoring the invalid track data. For instance, rename the files .3GP and they'll show up just fine.
Post back if you want a list of the plug-ins you should have in order to play pretty much anything in Quicktime.

  • Unable to play movie over HTTPS

I have this flash movie which was created using Captivate,
now the problem is it wont play over HTTPS connection- only the
playback control show up and all i get is blank screen. The actual
tutorial never starts, but as soon as i change it to HTTP it works
great. I am new to captivate and really need to fix this, Can
anyone please help me or point me to a solutions to this. Would be
    much appreciated. Thanks!!!

    Hi there tech_varun
I'm thinking this is something you should report to Adobe as
a potential bug. To do that, you use the Wish Form.
    Click
here to view the WishForm/Bug Reporting Form
Since things work under normal HTTP but fail under HTTPS. I
looked the code over and really don't see anything that would seem
to inhibit a HTTPS connection. So I'm wondering if it's got
something to do with the _skin.swf actually calling the main part
of the movie. I suppose we might confirm that to some extent by
asking you to publish with Borders turned off. (Project > Skin
    > Borders tab and DE-select "Show Borders")
Copy that output to the HTTPS server and see if the project
    seems to run.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Safari wont play flash videos...

I use firefox and safari and both are having this problem. When there is a flash video to be played, youtube for instance, Safari shows a quicktime Q with a ? mark in the middle of it. I have reinstalled and updated flash multiple times now and that fixes the problem very temporarily but it always goes back to the Q with the ? mark in the middle of it. I have updated quicktime, I have flip for mac and have updated that, I have tried using quicktime to view flash and I've tried using flip for mac to view the flash, neither work. I have updated versions of both browsers and I am at a loss for words.....please help!

    Hi
    Two things
First, "repair permissions" using Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
Second, go to System Preferences>Quicktime>Advanced and select "enable flash". Also, select "mime settings". When the panel opens, click on Miscellaneous. Uncheck Flash Media.
Restart Safari and try the Flash sites again.

  • Safari wont play online video

I click on a video...safari opens another page to play it online but remains a black page... It wont play :/

Probably because the site uses Flash or Java which the iPod (and all iDevices) do not support).  If you post the site that would help.

  • Safari wont play html5 videos. It used to play some videos on safari but now it displays black page with a silver play button within a circle with a line over it

Hey guys please help me out, I use videos on safari for work and at my leisure time.

I'm pretty sure this is a new feature of their site - videos autoplay on modern browsers now.  Download the Google Chrome app and see if the issue persists. My guess is it will and there's nothing you can do. It's not an issue with your phone.

  • Safari not playing Quicktime from new website, all other browsers can

Hi, I have a new web site being created. The developer has most of it done but has not been able to get the quicktime movies working correctly. The movies, animations, and panos, can be selected and play from Firefox on the MAC and PC, and IE on the PC.
Our problem is that these same movies do not show or play on Safari on the MAC. we just get a big "Q". The developer is a pc guy and has no way to get it working, he's tried it for months and everyday it's just a day away. Does anyone have some code or know what is going on and how to fix it. This is most frustrating. I would like to change developers but we are too far into the project to do that now. Thanks in advance for any information.

  • Safari wont play YouTube Videos.

They wont load or play, so I have to use Chrome or Firefox. Any ideas? I have noticed this the past few weeks, what gives? I checked all my software, everything is up to date..

The Flash plug-in failure on Lion, is a Safari issue that can be fixed with these steps:
My Flash Player plug-in would not play videos on YouTube (using Safari in Lion). It turned out that my Safari settings needed to be reset after the recent Lion 10.7.4 and Flash upgrades.  I called Apple tech...
This is what we did to fix it:
    1. Open Safari.
    2. Go to top left menu, under "Safari" click on "Reset Safari."
    3. UNCHECK the first two boxes, leave the next three checked, plus UNCHECK the next two, and keep the last three checked.
    4. Hit "Reset"
    5. After the reset finishes, Safari will relaunch and you can test Flash by going to YouTube to see that videos will now play.
    Thanks Apple Care!

  • Safari wont play to my apple tv, safari wont play to my apple tv

My ipad, iphone play to apple tv from safari.  But it will not play off my macbook pro.  My macbook pro itunes and other media will play.  Just not any videos from safari.

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). It also requires the computer to be using wi-fi.

  • Touch 4th gen iOS 6 wont play music through dock

hey my sister has a 4th generation iPod touch, which has been upgraded to iOS6, and for the first time since upgrading she connected it to her dock.
However when connected to the dock, the dock charges the ipod, but the sound continues to come out the speakers of the ipod, and the dock says "NOiP" meaning "no ipod connected"
is this a new feature of iOS6 or what? i am have tried an iPod classic and iPod nano and they both work perfectly fine, so its not the dock or the connection, but im unable to try anything else running iOs6 because i've got an iPhone 5, and we all know that difficulty there...
need help ASAP so she stops bugging me.

    Try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
If still problem that points to that the iOS update broke compatibility. That happens sometimes. If so then you will have to wait for an update either to the iPod or dock.

  • Safari wont play music

I go to a website that has music but I do not hear the music. Is there a setting that I need to turn on???

    Fran_man,
Following the procedures in No sound from some applications, but system alert sounds play (Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4), or opening GarageBand if you have it often corrects problems of this nature.
    ;~)

  • Why will Safari not play MP3s embedded in my iWeb pages when Firefox can?

One would have thought that if iWeb was going to get picky over the scenarios in which it would behave correctly, it would favour Apple-centric enviroments. But this doesn't appear to be the case when building an iWeb site with embedded MP3 files.
The published site behaves perfectly when viewed in Firefox and yes, even IE's latest incarnation. Files may take a while to download but they play when the download has finished. Safari is a different story. The MP3 files embedded in some pages simply will not play when viewed with Safari.
This page in particular has never worked in Safari -
    http://www.whisperycat.co.uk/version_5/sounds/Entries/2011/3/23_Promenade.html
A small blue questionmark appears instead of the 'Play' button.
Any workarounds or is it just the case that Safari and iWeb are incompatible on this fundamental point???

Well it looks as though I answered my own question. A Google search revelas that Safari has had over 2 years' history of reported problems with the mp3 format -
    http://www.google.co.uk/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=safari+wont+play+mp3&ie=UT F-8&oe=UTF-8&redir_esc=&ei=nkulT9_wA82g8gOPj8ntBA
    - and the solution is... STOP USING MP3 FILES
Yes, mp3 format is out, mp4 format is in. SO I'll need to upload MP4 versions of my audio files and then retry.
