IOS SLB Exclusively for Internal Clients

We would like to turn up IOS SLB in dispatched mode on (core) SUP720 MSFCs in an HSRP environment. We would sequester the farm(s) of IIS and Citrix servers on an 'SLB VLAN', with our internal client base on an 'Office VLAN'. All databases and other supporting servers for the SLB servers are also on the 'Office VLAN'.
Question: are there any issues, caveats, or compromises related to the back-end SLB servers accessing required resources on the Office VLAN? I am thinking that normal database and supporting traffic initiated by the SLB servers would just traverse the MSFC (as the default gateway) via inter-VLAN routing and that only the client-initiated, VIP-destined traffic on the Office VLAN would be handled by the IOS SLB feature and policies. In this thinking, supporting traffic replies from the databases back to the SLB server would use the routed SLB server's real IP address.
Thanks in advance for any input and experiences with this topology. I'm hoping that this is a forest-for-the-trees situation, but I haven't seen many references to an all-internal deployment of either IOS SLB or appliance-based SLBs.
Thanks,
Gene

If you are using dispatched mode, it needs to be L2 adjacent. In dispatched mode, the virtual server address is known to the real servers and IOS SLB redirects packets to the real servers at the media access control (MAC) layer.Phase I of IOS SLB implements dispatch mode only for packet redirection. In this mode, the real servers must be Layer 2 adjacent to the device redirecting packets, not beyond an additional router.

• Clarification about source and destination IPs for internal clients and Edge server

I just wanted to get some clarification on the correct traffic flow between internal Lync clients and the Edge server.
From all the diagrams I've looked at I was under the impression that if internal clients need to hit the Edge server to talk to external clients they should always do so through the Edge Internal interface which bridges to the Edge External interface and
out to the internet.  Specifically port 3478 from the Edge AV External interface to the internal clients.
We aren't seeing that in our environment.  When internal clients are talking to external clients we see the Edge AV External interface communicating directly with the internal client.  In fact we found this out because after the migration to Lync
2013 external users couldn't created a AV connection to internal users on either the Lync servers.  We saw traffic on 3478 being dropped between the Edge AV External interface and the internal client.  Once we opened that port AV traffic worked.
We never put this rule in until we introduced Lync 2013.  Lync 2010 didn't seem to require it.
Is that the correct flow?

I would also really love to know the outcome of this but it looks like the thread is marked as "Answered" and it is not so.
I've been working with a troublesome Lync deployment in which internal users are having issues sharing their desktop with external and federated users. After opening up all the 50000-59999 range for TCP/UDP on the A/V Edge external interface things are working
much better, but we still see sporadic failures.
It lead us to start digging into the network traffic. We see that UDP traffic on port 3478 is being routed back from the external client to the Edge A/V's external interface, inside of the DMZ's perimeter, then directly to the internal client on the internal
network. It doesn't look like it's making a connection since the stream is so small, so I wonder if there is a design flaw in my topology?
There are persistent static routes on the Edge server that use the internal interface to route internally directed traffic over the internal gateway. Tracert confirms the flow, but in wireshark traces, running during successful connections, UDP port 3478
is still sending packets directly to the internal IP from Edge's A/V address.
We also see successfully connected sessions communicate on a different network route that we use to handle internet traffic rather than our Lync topology's route (the one defined for A/V traffic). The connection opens on ports in the 50000 range, but goes
over a router that we have not configured for such traffic. Is that possible?
Why is UDP traffic on 3478 trying to go directly to internal clients from external interface ?
It sounds like it's happening elsewhere... Is this a legitimate issue to be diagnosing? Has it been observed and/or resolved by others?

• IOS SLB or CSS?

Hi
I am revieiwing SLB options for my client - real server and client side access subnets terminate on common 6500s/Sup720s....intial requirement is small so IOS SLB looks like a possible fit as tactical (would require feature set upgrade)....any known issues?
If I go for CSS then I assume that I will need to use SLB-on-a-stick config and destination/source NAT given current access topology...right?...i.e. I do not weant to have to re-engineer/place layer 3 separation between client-side MSFC and server farms.

Gilles
Thanks for fast response....I assume this is 'dispatch mode' where dest IP remains constant/MAC is modified.
My deployement issue is further complicated as SLB may need to enconmpass real servers being in subnets on both local 6500/Sup720 access vlans and those on peer (OSPF) remote
6500/Sup720 access vlans.
It seems to me that to avoid re-IPing, the best approach is to use CSS on a stick and use source/dest NAT....side affect of this is all clients appearing to real servers on single source IP = SLB VIP. Do you agree?
Also, would above work if some of the real servers were on 'foreign' peer Sup720 access subnets L3 reachable to the local Sup720? On paper this would seem to be fine as long as L3 reachability exists between remote real server and the SLB VIP which will be the address by which all real servers recognise clients.
Cheers for your input.

• IOS SLB maximum connections

Hi,
New to this Forum, at least. Apologies if this is not appropriate for SLB questions...
We have a standard IOS SLB setup with 2 x Cisco3725's running HSRP. IOS SLB setup for a few servers on private LAN. They're running www, ftp, https.
We have a customer who needs figures for maximum connections supported for www, for example.
We currently monitor the basic's(bandwidth :) ) via MRTG.
Has anyone an idea how we would go about trying to estimate max xonnections for our setup. Are there general scalability guidelines on CCO?
Thanks,
Mark

The Cisco IOS Server Load Balancing (SLB) feature is a Cisco IOS-based solution that provides server load balancing. This feature allows you to define a virtual server that represents a cluster of real servers, known as a server farm. When a client initiates a connection to the virtual server, the IOS SLB load balances the connection to a chosen real server, depending on the configured load-balance algorithm or predictor. To monitor HTTP access you could use the HTTP proble feature that is supported with IOS server load balancing. For more information refer to the following document.

• CSM - IOS SLB failover ?

I can't see this from the documentation, but as far as I can see the configuration commands on the switch are the same for IOS SLB and for the CSM. Does this mean that if you have an CSM which fails, the subset of functions supported by IOS SLB will be ?
I realise performance would be less and only 500 VIPs would be supported etc.
Thanks
Simon

Simon,
I do not think this is the case. If you look closely at the configuration you will see the command ip slb mode csm. This causes all SLB functions to be offloaded to the CSM. The default is ip slb mode rp which is IOS based. If the CSM fails then SLB will stop working. You will need to enter the command ip slb mode rp for it to work again.
If you are running version 2.1 or above it is recommended you run ip slb mode rp and use the configuration command
module ContentSwitchingModule X where X is the module number
and the slb commands under this.

• IOS SLB and Stateless failover

Trying to compare CSM and IOS SLB features. Read where the CSM can have "stateful" failover (maintains sessions) in a box-to-box scenerio. I also read where the IOS SLB can only provide "stateless" failover (I assume during failover, state/connection information is lost) using HSRP.
Can anyone confirm what I have written?
Your help is much appreciated.

That is correct.
The CSM can maintain state on connections on a failover using the "replicate csrp" command. This command is not available on IOS SLB.

• ISE 1.3 - internal CA for EAP client

Hi Experts,
Could you please give me the right way and step to configure ISE 1.3 built in CA for EAP client auth. I'm trying to complete my dual SSIDs procedure. My configure may has some missing config on Certificate section. That make client can not get through device enrollment & provisioning but auth, authorise are fine.
It s hard to config 100% correctly with out detailed guide. I know by fundamental setup the config must comprise of subordinate CA, OCSP, endpoint RA which I can not figure out those steps myself.
The steps or complete document are welcome. Official document does not help me get through.
Thank you in advance,
Nipat CCIE#29422

I would like to see something similar if anyone has anything with a little more detail then what the Admin Guide has.

• IOS SLB Loab Balance Questions

Forgive me if this is the wrong forum but it was the closest one I found relating to my issue.
I've trying to load balance four of our radius servers using IOS SLB. The config works well and the radius servers are accepting requests fine. I follow this article which wasn't too bad to follow:
http://www.cisco.com/application/pdf/en/us/guest/netsol/ns377/c649/cdccont_0900aecd800eb95f.pdf
My two questions are:
1. Sticky Option
I understand it's used to make sure the client's accounting information
goes to the correct real server, but I'm not sure how it really works
and what's the best time to set it to.
Eg:
ip slb vserver RAD-UDP-1646
virtual 210.x.x.224 udp 1646
serverfarm RADFARM
sticky 86400 group 10
inservice
a/ The documentation says "This configuraion causes the sticky database to store its entries for 86,400 seconds of inactivity". What do they mean by "inactivity" - no radius packets coming through? inactivity from the user's end?
b/ It also says "the client's IP address is added to the IOS SLB database..." - is this the client's framed IP that the ISP assigns to the customer???
c/ And what would be the optimum time to set the sticky timer to be?
2. SLB connection statistics
core1-router#sh ip slb reals
real farm name weight state conns
203.x.x.74 RADFARM 8 OPERATIONAL 0
203.x.x.78 RADFARM 8 OPERATIONAL 0
203.x.x.79 RADFARM 8 OPERATIONAL 0
203.x.x.80 RADFARM 8 OPERATIONAL 2
When you disconnect, the slb stats still show you as being connected to
the real server (and both udp ports) which isn't very accurate. There is a default "delay" time which handles TCP disconnections and after being disconnected for 10 sec, the SLB stats are updated to reflect this (I've verified this works)- but nothing about how it handles UDP disconnections??? This
would skew the stats and give us a very bad misrepresentation of the
number of current and valid connections. Is there anyway to correct this???
Thanks.
Andy

Inactivity for IOS SLB means that after specified time of inactivity, the client will be free to be load balanced to another server. As long as they remain active without an idle time , they will remain connected to the same real server. For the client's IP address which is added to the IOS SLB database I think it is the frammed IP address which the ISP assigns. The optimum time for the sticky timer will be its default value or say 60 seconds.

• IOS SLB - Samba

Hi,
Is it possible, and can anyone provide an example, to configure IOS SLB for Samba services ?
Thanks

Thanks for the response Ivan,
My level of account access wont allow me to view the link you have provided
Here's what I am looking at trying to achieve....
We have a file system that is accessed by many clients, the access is via a proprietary protocol. In order to support generic client access we mount the file system, using our own driver and share it as a Samba share. The systems hosting this Samba share are used for client access.
So, we could potentially have multiple machines hosting the same file system via Samba.
I would like to be able to present this architecture as an N+1 resilience model, which would require load balancing and failover on the machines hosting the Samba mount. IOS SLB seems like the right approach on paper, especially if you substitute Samba for FTP as an example.
One concern I do have is whether the throughput is constrained by utilizing SLB. Do you have any comment on this ?
I will look to see if I can dig up any L4 LB papers elsewhere in the mean time.
Thanks for your input thus far.

• IOS SLB and probe failure

Hello,
we use server-load-balancing with IOS 12.1(19)E1
We have a problem if the server receives more connections following error messages “REAL 192.168.197.8 (HSSAT1-LX) has changed to PROBE_FAILED” and few seconds later “REAL 192.168.197.8 (HSSAT1-LX) has changed to OPERATIONAL” appears and so on.
We checked the server and they works proper.
What could be the reason for probe failed?
My configuration:
ip slb probe HS-PROBE tcp
interval 5
ip slb serverfarm HSSAT1-LX
nat server
predictor leastconns
failaction purge
probe HS-PROBE
real 192.168.197.8 99
reassign 2
inservice
real 192.168.197.9 99
reassign 2
inservice
ip slb vserver HS.SAT1.DE
virtual xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx tcp www
serverfarm HSSAT1-LX
advertise active
inservice standby allvips
How does a TCP probe works? – I could not find more exact information in the documents to configure probes.
Is it better to use another probe (icmp)? – or without any probe?
When does it make sense to use probes?
Best regards
Stefan

HI Stefan,
tcp probes do a complete TCP 3-way handshake and normaly terminate the session. A problem which I had some times timeout for a session to be established might be to short if the server is "heavy" loaded.
Probing on a specific method (TCP HTTP ...) is most of the times the better solution. Imagine a WEB-Server which is properly pingable but the httpd died due to some internal error. If you would probe on a per ping basis the loadbalancer will never notice this but if you monitor tcp-port 80 by a tcp probe or better a http probe you will notice this and the server would be taken out of the serverfarm. Even better but afaik not possible in IOS SLB is to probe a certain page e.g. index.html. As you know that the httpd is up and running and pages can be displayed.
Regarding the probing issue it might be usefull to read the follwing link describing healthmonitoring with the CSM
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_installation_and_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00801c5899.html#1024967
Hope that helped.

• IOS slb questions

Hi,
1. It is true that ip slb probe http is not working on 6509 without CSM card?
2. Did someone had tested how many IOS SLB client connections can support a 6509 with SUP1A /MSFC2 without CSM card?
Thanks,
Yuti

The Cisco CSM accommodates a wide range of common IP protocols?including TCP and User Datagram Protocol (UDP). Additionally, the Cisco CSM supports higher-level protocols, including HTTP, FTP, Telnet, Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP), Domain Name System (DNS), and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP).
The Cisco CSM allows full regular expression pattern matching for policies based on URLs, cookies, and HTTP header fields. The Cisco CSM supports any URL or cookie format?allowing it to load balance existing Web content without requiring URL or cookie format changes.

• Looking for a client appointment app

I'm looking for an application for a friend who is a personal trainer. And if such an application doesn't exist, I'm considering writing one (I'm a software engineer)
The application would maintain a database of clients, and a schedule of appointments with them.
For each client, the following data needs to be maintained: contact information, current statistics (weight, body fat percentage, strength) as well as a history of statistics. Clients pay for a package of sessions in advance, and the app would keep track of how many prepaid sessions remain, updating that number with each scheduled appointment and each payment. Every client has recurring appointments, several per week, but rescheduling is common, and needs to be easy. And the app should be able to print out a year report for taxes.
I was thinking that it should interface with Address Book for contact information, and Calendar for appointments.
The main app should run on Snow Leopard, but mobile access through an iOS 4 sister app would be great. (Although if it works with Address Book and Calendar, their synchronization through MobileMe might be sufficient)
Is there any such thing? There must be other trainers, and other professionals with similar needs.
-Ron.

Hi Ron,
was there a template for bento that met all of the requirements that you detailed?  My wife is a personal trainer and we've been looking for similar functionality in an app.  Currently she's using the calendar app and contact book, but as you say, rescheduling is frequent and tracking remaining sessions would be very helpful.  Let me know,
Paul

• Cisco Jabber for Windows Client SDK

Is there an SDK for Cisco Jabber for Windows client? I could only find the Web SDK. Are there no other SDKs that would let me control features of the Jabber Windows Client?

And in order to avoid TAPI limitation, they say they have started using Jabber which controls all phone functionalities through an Application User connected to the Call Manager.
Assuming they are referring to the normal Jabber for Windows/Mac/iOS/Android applications then this is wrong. Jabber - the client, not the IM&P servers which are part of the CUCM cluster (if you're familiar with Lync consider CUCM+IM&P servers a Front End Pool) - do not use an Application User at all. When a user starts Jabber, assuming SAML SSO is off, they supply an email address. This is used to find the servers via DNS SRV records, or the Mobile and Remote Access Expressway (roughly analogous to a Lync Edge pool) to tunnel through the firewall. After the email address they are prompted for their End User username and password. This is then used to access several APIs on the server, namely the User Data Service to discover what the user has. This would include what the user has configured/available to them. After this is done the Jabber client does one of three things with respect to phone functionality:
If the user has no phone devices provisioned for them - physical or software - it becomes an IM&P client only.
If the user has a software phone phone provisioned, it registers as that using SIP. In this way Jabber is the actual phone. This is called a CSF device for Jabber Windows/OS X.
If the user has a desk phone assigned to their End User account AND administrative policy is to default to desk phone control, it registers to CTI Manager on the CUCM server to control the user's physical phone.
A user can toggle between option two and three, if appropriately provisioned, but cannot have both simultaneously. In other words, Jabber is either controlling a physical phone over CTI or is a phone itself using SIP. The difference is where the audio/video media is sent from/to.
All of this happens using that human's End User credentials.
Now, if you wanted to have a server control the user's phone - either a physical one or Jabber - you would use the TSP as an interface to CTI Manager on the CUCM server and receive real-time events (e.g. the user went off-hook, the phone is ringing with this caller ID, etc.) and issue commands to that phone (e.g. make a call to X). This is done using an Application User account because the server would need to do this for multiple users simultaneously. If you also use the Super Provider concept, the CUCM administrator doesn't have to take the extra step of associating every phone to your Application User manually. Instead, you can simply issue CTI subscriptions to see any/all device activity you want.
This is all assuming you wanted to do the integration server-side to avoid having to update the Cisco TSP application on every user PC (which also limits your WPF application to machines capable of running the TSP) every time the CUCM administrator patches the servers. If you don't care about that, then you can do this all client-side on the user's PC, and have them supply their End User credentials.
Of course, you could also reconsider the Jabber SDK and just embed the make/receive call functionality directly into your application instead.

• Setting Up Certificate Validation for Jabber clients

Hi:
I would like to get certificates signed from private internal CA for Jabber clients. Cisco documentation says it requires HTTP/Tomcat for CUPS, HTTP/Tomcat for CUCM and UCXN[8.6].
The exiting Tomcat certificate has these two files: tomcat.pem, tomcat.der and a bunch of tomcat-trust certificates as well with associated files.
My question is is there any harm in generating a new tomcat certifcate or could I just generate CSR's for the two existing Tomcat files to be signed? When you generate a new Tomcat certificate does it create or overwrite the .pem and .der? I don't want to break anything in this process so looking for some feedback.
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/jabber/Windows/9_2_5/JABW_BK_CAAD3F25_00_cisco-jabber-for-windows-release-notes/JABW_BK_CAAD3F25_00_cisco-jabber-for-windows-release-notes_chapter_011.html

Generating a CSR for the Tomcat certificate and installing the signed certificate will replace the .pem/.der file you see listed. Once you sign the CSR and upload the final certificate, you'll need to restart Cisco Tomcat from the CLI for it to pickup the new cert. Anything that is in a -trust store is something that server will accept during a TLS/SSL handshake, not something it uses itself.

Try to decide by analysis whether this request is
reasonable or whether there is a program error. You should pay
particular attention to the internal table entries listed below.

If the error occures in a non-modified SAP program, you may be able to
find an interim solution in an SAP Note.
If you have access to SAP Notes, carry out a search with the following

notification to SAP, include the following information:

    1. The description of the current problem (short dump)
