The 4.1 version for 3 gs is the best one .
as far as 5.1 its considerably slows the 3gs and 4.3.3 has known issues like wifi signal dropping and battery drain. so you must stay on ios 4.1 for your 3gs.

IOS4 feature chart for 3GS

I looked on Apple's iOS4 web page but all it says is that some of the features won't work on the 3G and/or 3GS, using multitasking and the 3G as an example.
Does anyone know if Apple has a table/chart somewhere showing exactly what features won't work on the earlier models? For example I know that FaceTime won't work on the 3G/GS models.

As celliot147 says, the 3GS will get all the features except the ones that rely on the hardware of the new iphone. Have to say I am really looking forward to the update after being at the genius bar of my local Apple store to get a replacement data cable today. The guy helping me had iOS4 on his 3GS already and let me have a go, well impressed with the way it multitasks and the folders.
This update will keep me going till contract runs out next year and then think it is going to have to be a PAYG IP4 to keep my unlimited data contract.

In an earlier post, someone provided the file to download the iOS4.3 update directly from Apple support along with the link to the site that provides these updates. Can you please provide again?

There is no official Apple site to download older iOS versions. Even if you could download it, you can't install it using your current version of OS X as listed in your profile.

ITunes 9.2, MS Office 2010 & iOS4... duplicate calendar. How to remove one?

I just upgraded to Microsoft Office 2010 (I had 2007).
When I sync my iPhone to my MS Outlook 2010 I now see two calendars on my iPhone.
In MS Office 2007 and the 3.1.3 FW is was okay. Is this a MS Office 2010 issue.
I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit , 64 bit of iTunes and 32 bit of MS Office '10 installed.
I tried unticking one Calendar on the 'Info' tab, but that didn't help. Also in the 'Advanced' section to replace information on this iPhone with this calendar wasn't succesful.
Is there a way to remove one calendar on my iPhone?

I tried having all in a 64 bit environment, so:
64-bit of Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit iTunes 9.2 and 64-bit MS Office 2010
than syncing my iPhone in iTunes to my Outlook 2010 calendar but unsuccesful, there is still 2 calendars in my iPhone.
There is only one calendar present in my Outlook 2010.
I have a POP3 account, so NO Exhange, iCal or whatever.
Is there a way as to delete one calendar from my iPhone (it's the same as the other)?
I know that when using MS Office 2007 I only had one calendar, so I think Office 2010 has something to do with it.
(btw, I now reverted back to MS Office 2010 32-bit)

Notes app not holding changes since new iOS4 update for 3GS

I didn't notice it right after the update, but I've noticed that recently my Notes app (the one that came on the iPhone) isn't working correctly. I use this app for a ton of things, & it's VERY frustrating for it to not work. So I've got a note I've been trying to update, & when I make a change, it doesn't stick. It completely goes away, as if I never made any changes. But this problem seems to be random, because as far as I can tell, another note of mine seems to be letting me make changes. SOMEONE PLZ HELP!!!

Is there a way to get the notes that were created in my email acct folders into my iPhone folder? I didn't even realize I had these different folders until a few notes after the update. How does it even determine which folder it saves a new note into anyways?!?! Well thank you for your reply. I think this will solve my initial problem. Now to just figure out how to get all my notes into my iPhone folder for notes. sigh ...

How to update ios4.1 to ios4.3.3 but NOT ios5 for 3GS

I how can I update my iphone os from 4.1 to 4.3.3 at iphone 3GS? when i press update from I-Tune, it always force me to update to latest ios 5.0.1
The reason I do not want IOS5 because I did update to it before, and it cause my iphone keep restart every 5 minute.

this is not fair. There are a lot of ppl outside having trouble after their 3GS updated to ios5. APPLE should let us choose which version to update to, or even downgrade. I believe there must be some work around to archive this.
I tried to download iPhone2,1_4.3.3_8J2_Restore.ipsw, and when update in i-tune, i press SHIFT button (Win), it allow me to choose the ipsw file, but after that i-tune prevent me to continue. Anyone tried to update using method and success before?

I upgraded my 3GS to the operating system but i don't see anywhere that i can move apps into folders. Does anybody else see it?

Touch any icon until they start to "shake", then drag an icon onto another you want in the same folder, then continue adding to the folder by dragging...when you are done, press the home key...you are limited to 12 apps per folder, unfortunately....

New Email Notification Sound

Hi,
These Apple devices are getting a little popular. At my workplace I always hear the same old "ding" everytimes someone gets an email so a number of us reach for our devices to see which one it was for.
We are up to iOS4 so I imagine it is a choice to not allow configurable notification sounds. What possible (sensible) reason can there be?! It isn't exactly a complext feature.
The renowned Apple consistancy in operation is good but not for notifications. thats just confusing.

You can change your email alert sounds through the use of a free app. Download Boxcar from the app store, and have it alert you when an email arrives with one of its sounds. You can then turn off the email received sound in the settings on the iPad.
We do this in my house with 3 iphones and 2 ipads constantly dinging. Each person has a unique email arrival sound.

IPhone 3G MMS Not Working After iOS4

After upgrading to iOS4 on 3G, lost the ability to send/rec MMS on Starhub network. Have made sure the option to enable MMS feature in Message Settings is turned on. No avail!!
Anyone facing the same problem??

I didnt notice that my MMS was disabled until after I jailbroke 4.0 update. It ***** that iphone 3g users cant get multitasking and all the good updates, but when u jailbreak IT CAN! I did receive MMS right after the update. But now, I can only get MMS if I restore the phone back to its original settings and restore it as a new phone, not my old one. I been restoring to all my old back ups all day to see which one would enable MMS again. There is no option for MMS to be turned on like it was right after I restore it. I also didnt notice that the 3G network wasnt working because I am always in a wi-fi area. Until last nite, I jailbroke and everything was find until I tried to send my girlfriend a pic and there was NO MMS option. I tried to reset network settings, and thats when I realized 3G did not work.
If I could up with a solution I'll post it!

Yes; update it from iTunes on a computer. If a device can run iOS 4.1, it can run iOS 4.2.1, which is the maximum for an iPhone 3G.

Can itune 9.2 and iOS4 shared by iphone 4g and 3GS

I upgraded to iphone 4g, but I still like to keep my old 3gs as a back up,
but in order to get iOS4 in 3gs working properly, I had to do "set up a new iphone" instead of "restore" which I did and the 3gs is good now, but just without any of my iphone stuff on it.
my question is, if I plug in the 4g ,do a back up, then plug in my 3gs with iOS4
and do a "restore" will the two phone have exactly the same setting and contents?

You can set up separate settings for each phone, just give them a different name to each other. I have my iphone 4 on the same account as my husbands jailbroken 3GS. When one phone is plugged in you can go through all the things you want/don't want on it then do the same with the other. It sounds a lot harder than it is.

Iphone3GS + iOS4 problems with Camera picture names.

I use Image Capture to import all my images since i bought my iphone3GS more than a year ago with the delete after import option.
Now, with iOS4, I take 10 pictures then i import & delete and my images come with name IMG_0001.jpg to IMG_0010.jpg so nothing wrong here. The issue comes when i start making more pictures and import them. The image name start again with IMG_0001.jpg instead with IMG_0011.jpg as allways was.
This is a BIG BUG and i do not know how to resolve it. Does anyone have a clue how to do it?

I'm suspecting that Apple doesn't regard this as a bug.
My personal thoughts that it is a silly feature to reset the file count each time you empty the camera roll, or better yet it could have a feature you could turn on/off in the settings like many cameras allow you to do.

I suspect that what has happened, is the developers have designed the iOS4 software around iPhoto and not anything else.
iPhoto creates Events based on the digitised time of the file, that is, the time you took the photo. So it effectively creates a sub folder called an Event and puts the photos there. When you download the photos from the iPhone straight into iPhoto and there were multiple days over which the photos were taken, it creates multiple Events. So in saying that, it doesn't really care what the file is called and if there are a thousand IMG_001 files in iPhoto in a thousand different Events, iPhoto and your computer had no trouble in finding them all.
You are like me and use Image Capture to import the photos rather than iPhoto.
My work around is to select the photos by each day in Image Capture and download them to a folder that includes the date they were taken (eg 100925 BBQ at the Beach (I add the date at the start so when I am searching thru finder, the folders are listed in the order I took them)) and have them deleted when imported automatically from the iPhone.
It not great, but it works for me and even though I may end up with a thousand IMG_001 files, they don't all end up in the same folder, left for me to work out which ones they are.

Even appears on the preview and on the photo
