IOS4.3 Home Sharing - Odd

Hi guys.
I have 4.3 on my iPhone, and running itunes 10.2.1
I have read through config details for iTunes home share and have set everything up. I can access the share through the ipod on my iphone, but not all content is shared. When I go to 'video' and scroll down to TV SHOWS I am only seeing 8 out of 190+ epdisodes of TV Shows I have in my iTunes library. To make matters worse the 8 that I can see are for Ms Bumpt so I have no desire to watch them anyway! Also, the episodes are out of order, not filed under each show etc.
All Movies that I have in Itunes are showing, and I think that all music is too, however I have too much content to be able to validate each track...
I would appreciate any suggestions, or failing that even validation that someone else has a similar problem!
Thanks heaps.

I've identified the problem with the missing TV shows.
It seems the 'Artist' field must be tagged in iTunes. If it's blank the episode won't appear on your iOS device.
So if you fill in all the Artist fields then the shows will magically appear... weird huh?
I've waited so long for this home sharing/streaming feature - it's nice but I'm still unimpressed because it seems half-baked.
- TV episodes are listed in some funky order I just can't comprehend.
- the blue watched/unwatched indicator in iTunes isn't carried over to the iOS device so you can't tell whether you've already watched an episode.
- you must scroll through all your Movies on the iOS device before you can see your TV Shows, Music Videos or Podcasts - painful.

  • ITunes Home Sharing and the Actiontec MI424WR

I have a MacPro Desktop that holds a pretty huge iTunes library (35,500+ items). It's the mothership and is connected to my home network via ethernet. I have a Dell Media Center machine (Vista; also ethernet) hooked to the TV and basic home theater system. It's the number one player for Home Sharing. On them, Home Sharing works flawlessly.
My wife's HP laptop (Vista; wireless connection) and my MacBook Pro on the other hand are a little quirky. If hooked up via ethernet, everything is fine. When using them wirelessly however, Home Sharing (as well as the Shared links in Finder on the MBP) disappear. In fact, I can have iTunes up and running and watch the Home Share appear and disappear as I connect the MBP to the network one way or the other. The most bizarre thing is, it's worked wirelessly before. Nothing changed as far as I know, it just decided one day that it wasn't going to play nicely anymore, or something. After dwelling on this for a bit, I came to the conclusion it had to be the wireless router (Actiontec MI424WR for Verizon FIOS) that was causing the issue. It was the only common denominator.
Opening the interface, I went to Wireless Settings then Advanced Security Settings. Everything there was innocuously fine. At the bottom of the Advanced screen, however, is a link called Other Advanced Wireless Options. Inside this menu are a number of settings probably better off left alone. The one that struck me was the second one down called "Network". It was set to "Network (Home/Office)". Seemed logical but what were the other options? Of course I checked.
Whatever selecting "Broadband" actually did (I have yet to find it described in documentation in any detail) it solved ALL of my problems. The floodgates have reopened. From the laptop I can now see the entire mixed network as well as access the iTunes library on the MacPro. What was originally thought by the Apple Care Tech to be related to the size of the library ("I've never heard of one being so large") turned out to be nothing more than a setting in the router's wireless settings menu.
Now if I can just find out what it did, exactly....

#1 Do you have only one router OR least two?
#2 If at least two routers, what is the brand and model of the other router?

    #3 Odd.
After selecting "Broadband", what else did you do?
For example, setting up a Static IP.

Home Sharing is designed to work on your local network not across the internet/cloud.
Stuff is accessed under the Computers column where your local iTunes library on a local computer would appear.
Home Sharing would share your iTunes content (i.e. stuff stored in itunes on the computer, not in the cloud) with AppleTV or an iPad etc on the SAME network.
AppleTV2 will not be able to see itunes content on the work computer over the internet.  It's not designed to.  if the work computer was on the home network it would.
iCloud is in it's infancy and is not a mature product - iTunes TV Show purchases appear on AppleTV, but currently music does not unless you are subscribed to iTunes Match. I find this rather odd to be honest, along with the inability to buy music on AppleTV2.  Movies purchased in iTunes are not authorised for iCloud viewing currently either.
Maybe it has something to do with iTunes Match 'getting in the way' - i think they assume you'll use that whereas you really want to be able to access Purchased music from the cloud without subscribing to itunes Match which is overkill for some.

  • How can I access the Home Sharing Library from my iPad?

We have an ipad 2 with ios 7, and an imac with itunes 11.1.3
Just heard about home sharing and want to use this - surprised we haven't heard of it before
home sharing is turned on in itunes (file > home sharing).
home sharing is on for the ipad (settings > music)
They are both connected to the same wifi network (usually our computer doesnt use wifi and is wired, but we turned wifi on just for this)
When I open music in the ipad (even after continually quitting and reopening the app) there is no 'more' button in the bottom right that there is supposed to be.
What is wrong? How do I access the library from the ipad? Help please!

    Welcome to the Apple community.
More does more than home sharing, so it's odd that it isn't there, even if home sharing wasn't working for some reason. Are you sure you are in the music app and not the iTunes App.

  • Itunes Home Sharing with Ios7 Ipad

Upgraded Ipad to Ios7 (what was I thinking) and now have upgraded Itunes on my laptop to 11.1
Music and Video apps on my Ipad show my Itunes Library Name correctly, but wont load them, after 30secs or so,comes up with "Unable to turn on home sharing".
    Remote App does the same.
Home sharing is turned on in Itunes and on the Ipad (it found the library name after all).
Anyone else encountered this or know of a solutuion/work around?
    Cheers

I have a similar issue.... But on my iPhone, I have yet to try my iPads etc. HS worked fine last night, but I had to clean install iOS7 due to some anomalies. Since doing so, HS will not verify.
And yet it shows my library in Videos and Music and even connects in Music... But it does not connect in Videos...? And when adding it to Remote, it states that it is unavailable at present and to try in a few minutes.
    Odd behaviour...?
Does anyone have any ideas or solutions to hand.
    Thanks.

  • ITunes Home Sharing for video on different account

My husband has a separate iTunes account from mine, however I run our media servers at home where I have a library of movies running through iTunes which we view via Apple TV and other devices.
He has his iPad set to - Settings/Videos/HomeSharing/His-Apple_ID
The question is - if I CHANGE THIS to - Settings/Videos/HomeSharing/MY-Apple_ID
(so he can view my iTunes library)
Does this mess up his usage/connection to his iTunes account - in any other area of the iPad?
In other words - can the Home Sharing Apple ID be different than one's personal Apple ID?
It would actually be nice if we were allowed to keep multiple accounts to connect to for this for moving to different locations and sharing...

    A happy ending?
    Here's what I did.
    On the Mac Mini.....
As a safe guard I duplicated the Preference folder in my user library and moved it to the desktop. Then from the original Preferences Folder I moved all the com.apple.xxx plists to the trash and restarted.
    No fix
I then moved the rest of the contents of the Preference Folder (the system won't allow trashing the actual folder) to the trash and restarted.
Following that I set up Home Sharing again on both the iMac and the Mac Mini and BINGO.
It must have been a non apple preference of some sort causing the odd behaviour. Who knows which or what.
Note that I did not have to move or get rid of any preferences on the iMac!
Now to try to get the Mac Mini (preferences) back to looking and acting as I want - a reasonably big job but probably worth the effort in the end.

  • Home Sharing Enabled Playlist No Content

I recently had a problem with Home Sharing not working at all for my remote devices with the exception of my Apple TV.  I got by that by launching iTunes as administrator.  Here is my setup and my problem:
    Windows 8.1 64-bit
    iTunes for Windows 12.1.0.71
    Home Sharing enabled
Edit > Preferences > Sharing - Share my entire library is selected
Apple TV 3 - No problems accessing content
iPad - No problems accessing content
iPhone - When I launch the Music app., I can click on More.  I select Playlist > My Shared Library.  It looks to load very quickly, which I feel is odd because my library is large.  I goto Playlist and it says No Content.
Wife's iPad -  Same behavior as the iPhone
Everything is on the same wireless network and home sharing is using the same apple ID.

    Good day Derek,

  • Remote App and Home sharing not working

I've had no luck getting either the Remote app or Home Sharing working.  I've opened the correct ports, turned on sharing (both home sharing and under the Preferences -> Sharing tab), installed the newest version of iTunes, restarting the computer, iPhone, and router, and I'm still not seeing the iPhone appear under devices nor am I seeing home sharing as an option in the iPhone's iPod app.  Any idea?

These cases often end up with the user having some Odd thirdparty firewall or virus scanner try to disable it

  • ITunes 10.6.1, Home sharing: Show: Items not in my Library

iTunes Home sharing's feature to only show items not in my library used to work great, allowing me to keep my main iMac library and my MacBook Pro library synced. But just recently, my main library can no longer seem to sort out what items are unique in connected libraries -- it only shows the books that I don't have. Doesn't display movies, tv, music that aren't unique. I get the whole libary but once I press "Items not in my Libary" it doesn't work properly. What's odd is that I'm fine the other way. My MacBook Pro has no problems with the "Items not in my Library" selection when looking at my iMac's library.
Has anyone noticed change for the worse in the behavior of Home Sharing with respect to showing items not in the local library? I've tried turning Home Sharing off, rebooting both computers, and then turning Home Sharing on. But that doesn't fix it.

    @Dr-House:
    Dude this worked!!!
    this was really bothering me!
thanks a ton for posting and helping all us noobies!

  • Problems with Home Sharing

I have an iMac and MacBook Pro set up to do home sharing, which has worked in the past. After some issues with iTunes, reinstalling some preferences, etc., home sharing no longer works correctly. Whichever computer I launch iTunes on first can see the other computer, but the other computer can't see the first computer. I reinstalled iTunes on both computers and also rebuilt the iTunes library on one of the computers. It worked with the first launch of both, but is now back to the same odd behavior.

I'm going to tentatively mark this answered. What seems to fix it is making sure the libraries on each computer have different names. What's strange is that they've always had the same name before and worked, and with this it will intermittently work with the same name. But having two different names seems to be the way to go, which does make sense.

  • I'm using home sharing But not all albums or artists show up as they do on my computer in itunes

I'm using home sharing with iTunes but not all artists or albums show up as they appear on the computer I'm looking at

Sure, but if I have International League Pass shouldn't there be a way to tap into that? I mean, if I can watch it on my computer, why can't I conveniently watch it on the television sitting right next to it via Apple TV. Seems odd...

  • Not able to use Apple TV Home Sharing when internet down

I am encountering an odd problem.
I have been using Apple TV ever since the 1st Gen and have been using it to stream content from my iMac using Home Sharing.
It's all been working without incident until the past 2 weeks as my internet connection has been spotty and dropping out for 30 mins - 2 hours at a time.
When the internet is down I am able to browse my itumes library, look to see what is there, no issues.
But when I try to play the content I get the spinning wheel indicating it's loading content but nothing loads.
I've tried resetting the Apply TV.  Restarting iTunes, etc, etc - nothing works.
It only starts to work again once the internet connection comes back - then I am able to play content.
This is odd as it's all offline content (subscribe to many podcasts that download automatically and want to play them via Apple TV from my iMac iTunes).
Has anyone else had similar issues and have a workaround?  Or is this a new "bug" that has to be corrected by Apple?
    Many thanks

    Hello,
i have the same problem when I go on holiday.
i Take my airport express to create a local wifi without interne So I can use home sharing from my laptop to apple tv for children animation movies or watch our own series.
    1) if you wait several minuts the spinning wheel will disappear and the content will start.
    2) IF you want it quicker when you are offline>  launch it from your mac then airplay it (via the iTunes airplay icon near the fast forward button of the video) then it starts immediately.
This is an issue that only affects Apple TV not being connected to internet when trying to retrieve content from Apple TV via home sharing.
Let me know if both workarounds works for you the same way it works for me.
    Regards

  • Home sharing connection temporary

After restoring and restarting and resetting (including router reboot) my home sharing lasts only temporary. Sometimes an hour but most time less. I guess I'm just used to Apple being easy. This is not. Maybe an easy fix but I am perplexed. All devices are signed on fo home sharing.
Time Capsule, MacBook Pro, iPad 1,iPad 2, iPhone 4s,apple tv
    Please help I'm melting!

Jamster: thanks so much for your kind assistance.  Unfortunately, I tried looking at the firewall settings document before posting, and I found that the firewall settings recommended do not correspond to the fields or the number of digits in the fields I could locate in my firewall settings for my computer, my router and my anti-virus software.  Accordingly, I could not determine if my settings were correct or incorrect.  In addition, the router settings window contained a warning not to alter any of the settings.
Fortunately, I found that there was a software update for the AppleTV device that I had not been notified about and had not downloaded.  After downloading the update, home sharing seems to work for me.  Unfortunately, contacting Apple was not productive, as they would not provide any help unless I paid for it.  They also claimed falsely that I had not downloaded any software updates for the product since it had been purchased.  I find it odd that Apple claimed it has no responsibility to provide support for problems that occur from the time the product package is opened, if the 90-day free service period has passed.  Interesting way to do business.
