IOS4 trashed 3GS with error 37 on restore

Have been trying to restore phone for the last 24 hours. I have redownloaded the update, reinstalled itunes. Each time phone will not update and bombs out with error 37 (unknown apparently).
I am stuck with a completely useless phone it doesn't even have the usb/itunes symbol on the front now.
From update log :
device returned AMR error 37
It looks like this phone is totally cabbaged and it is less than a year old.

Have been having the same trouble as everyone else here. Have had the problem 3GS upgrading to iOS4 software and the same problem with iPhone4. I have spent an hour on the phone to Apple with success!!!
I was asked to stop running Apple Mobile Devices process in Services but this did throw up an unknown error (1618), however I do think there was a reboot therefore starting this process again before performing the following.
If you are running ZoneAlarm or Norton Firewall then UNINSTALL it don't just disable it. Then when trying for the hundredth time it finally got past the Verifying iPhone Restore and started installing the firmware.
Really do hope this helps you all as the frustration is a killer?

How to restore iPhone 3gs with error code 1015 ??

The only advice we can give is to try and put it into DFU mode and restore. If that doesn't fix it, buy a new phone.
There is a reason that Jailbreaking isn't supported. You have just been kicked in the donkey by it.

  • How to restore iPhone 3gs with error code 21

I have an Iphone 3GS. I replaced the battery and digitizer. When I plug in to Itunes the Iphone wants to "restore", but I recieve an error code 21, and it will not "restore.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you,
    Peter

    Peter,
In the past, I have had some devices show that error but I was able to simply hard reset the device and it booted fine.
Was the phone jailbroken before?  Also, I would make sure you are attempting the restore in DFU mode versus Recovery mode.  It sounds like it is having a conflict with the baseband which is why the device is not allowing itself to boot.  You might also try using TinyUmbrella to fix recovery.
If you continue having issues, let me know.  Also let me know if you are using PC or Mac and which OS you are running.
Let me know how it goes!  If it doesn't work I may have a few other tricks up my sleeve.

  • HT4972 I tried to update my iPhone 3S with iOS, data was restored but on continue with activation in the iTunes stores, it is replying "We're sorry, we are unable to continue with your activation at this time." what could be the reason?

I tried to update my iPhone 3GS with iOS, data was restored but on continue with activation in the iTunes stores, it is replying "We're sorry, we are unable to continue with your activation at this time." what could be the reason?

Hmm, well... iTunes trys to activate your iPod using the Apple server to make sure you have bought it legit.
Two things come into my mind:
    1) Your iTunes can't access the internet.
    2) Apples activation servers are down.
That's just my cents, maybe anyone else has an idea.

Try popping out the SIM card and turn off the phone.
Pop in the SIM card once again and turn on the phone, make sure that the SIM card is placed and seated perfectly in the tray!
Tell me how did you unlock your phone!?

  • Unable to restore iPhone 3Gs with iOS 4 (error 1013)

I recently updated my 16GB iPhone 3Gs with iOS 4 (iPhone2,14.0_8A293Restore.ipsw) using iTunes 9.2 - it worked fine for a few days then all of a sudden I got a pop up message saying "you are unable to make or receive calls, please connect to iTunes". I did so and restored the firmware, it went through the whole cycle, unpacked, installed, verified and when it was about to be completed I got the following error from iTunes:
"The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1013)"
The phone remained in restore mode (iTunes icon and USB cable). I tried restoring again with the same result. I then deleted the firmware file, rebooted and reinstalled (same error). I then deleted a reinstalled iTunes (no dice). I tried alternative USB ports and cables and also tried on 2 other computers and tried all this in DFU mode too yet nothing has worked.
I would also like to point out that it is an original O2 phone with O2 chi[p that has *never been jailbroken*. Any ideas as to whats wrong? Or what I can do? Thanks in advance for you help!

OK, so nothing else was working so I took my phone into the Genius bar and explained what had happened. The Genius said He was unsure what error 1013 was so he looked it up and explained "It's an error related to the baseband and that more than likely the phone was unable to communicate with Apple servers as Apple had the phone marked as non existent"
He continued to explain that there was a fix he could do but would be quicker and easier to replace my phone. He did so and I left happy.
I recomend you just take your phones in if you are having this same issue!

    Somebody help!

What happened when you connected your iPhone to your computer while running iTunes on your computer? You should be prompted through the restore process. If it doesn't work try getting your iPhone into Recovery Mode.

  • I have installed 0S5 but restoring the backup doesn't work. the following messages appear: An error accurred while restoring this iphone (-20)  because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with iphone being restored (my iphone 3GS)

I have installed 0S5 but restoring the backup doesn't work. the following messages appears: An error accurred while restoring this iphone (-20), followed by another message:  because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with iphone being restored (my iphone is 3GS), I tried restoring the factory settings and then restore the backup, but the same problems and I have lost all my contacts, pictures etc

    Hi Ckuan,
Thanks a lot for your advice.
Deleting the correupted back up means to delete the information of one month since the last back up I made is one month ago.....right?
This back up I made right before I restored my iphone.  During the restore however my OS was upgraded to 5.1.1. and reading the comments on the internet it seems I am not the only one whom experience this problem.
Can it be that if I downgrade my OS back to 5.1. the back up will not be considered as corrupted?  If so, how do I downgrade the iphone?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Installing OS4 - restore fails with error message 1014 - 3GS unusable

I tried to install OS4 on my 3GS iPhone. Process reported that a restore and update were required. The restore failed with error message 1014. This has rendered the phone unusable. Any help for me since Apple technicians from India weren't able to help.

Anyone got this fixed, I also have the same problem. I got an error during update, then the iPhone went into Recovery Mode and iTunes says it has to be restored and updated, but the restore has taken over 15 hours know and Applecare told me to wait or come to an applestore... I'm on holiday in Europe and I have a 12 hour fligth in a few days back to the US...

  • IPhone 3GS first gives warning: unknown IMEI and unknown ICCID! Restoring failes with error 1002!

My iPhone 3GS suddendly couldn't connect to the mobile provider's network. As I was in a rural place, I though this was because of bad coverage. It was then still possible to use Wi-Fi. After a while the phone asked to connect to itunes and gave the following warning: unknown IMEI and unknown ICCID.
I tried recovering it but procedures failes after hours with error 1002.
Is there a fix for this problem or do I need to go to a service center?

Thanks Carolyn, I've tried all the options, but still it does not finish the recovering process. It stops with still a half millimeter on the statusbar .
Will probably just have to go to a service center. I already read that more people have the same problem and no one found a solution. As I am abroad and my iPhone largely exceeded the warranty time, I wonder what they will charge.

I have tried to hold the "home" and "power" button to reboot
I have tried powering it off
I have tried, to unplug the cable, hold the "home" button and then plug it in.
Can't check the SN or warranty, cause it is stuck in restore mode.
Is the hard drive gone? Should there be something replaced.

This may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues, and restore your device on a different known-good computer. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Usually this is caused by your antivirus or firewall blocking iTunes access to the Internet. It can also occur if the phone is jailbroken or if the computer you are using was ever used to jailbreak an iDevice.

I cant' restore my iPhone 3GS. Error 37. Anyone has any suggestions?

I had a similar issue with my Daughter's 3GS - I tried restoring it with "Restore Mode" and it would not do it. A quick search led me to MacRumors.com where I found an article on restoring your device via DFU Mode. It takes awhile to do it, but it definitely fixed my issue.
    Good luck!
