IOS4 Wifi Observation

I currently have my iPod touch and iPhone 3GS updated. First thing I noticed was the wifi antenna symbol is indicating a stronger signal ( number of bars ) than before in areas that I was already familiar with. Even on my home network. I don't know if that means their reception strength was actually enhanced or just that they are now set to show more bars.
At the same time out of curiosity I did download speed tests on both and noted slower than expected speeds on networks that I previously had much faster downloads. The speediest.net app saves your results so you can compare previous ones. Of course that could just be a one time result on a particular network however when I check it on my iPad which of course does not have iOS4 the speeds are exactly what I expect from previous tests. Running those tests side by side with my iPhone and iPad on the same network confirms the discrepancy. Now whether that means that the downloads are actually slower on the iOS4 devices or that the test apps for some reason are just reporting them as slower on those devices I don't know.
Has anyone else noticed anything like this?

I've continued to see very slow download speeds over wifi on all devices upgraded to iOS 4. I now have an iphone 4, my wife has an iphone 3GS, and I also have an ipod touch all with iOS 4. Running download speed tests using the speedtest.net app on all these devices show extremely slow speeds on all networks even high speed broadband ones. My ipad which is now my only mobile device not using iOS 4 shows the expected speeds on the different networks. This all changed on the other devices after the software update. I've seen the posts from others about not having a wifi connection after the software upgrade but that's not my issue, possibly related though? Upload speeds on those devices do not seem to be affected.
Running speed tests on the 3G network today in Baltimore actually returned the highest speed I've ever seen on 3G, over 4megs! Almost 10 times what I'm getting on wifi.

  • IOS4 wifi connection problems after a re-start

My wifi works fine until I turn my phone off then on. Then it does not automatically reconnect to the airport wifi network.
This has only happened since ios4 and I can duplicate it on numerous iPhones.
The problem is with WPA2 and not WEP

    same issue here..
reset my network settings and reset phone a billion times already, same issue still occur. sometimes the phone will wake up with wifi and sometimes it will go to 3g, one time it went to GPRS, its just really bizarre. If i open safari it will ask if i want to join the network that i originally set up, but when i select the network it just says "unable to connect". If i just leave the phone be for a couple hours and wake it up again, it will rejoin the wifi network.
I use remote to control my music library, but if my phone goes to sleep, it won't reconnect again so it's basically useless.
    BIZARRRRRE, driving me crazy..

  • IPod Touch WIFI Signal Fluctuates After Upgrading to iOS4

I upgrade to iOS4, and now my iPod Touch 3rd gen's WIFI signal fluctuates now matter how close I am to my Airport. I can be right next to the Airport and the signal will go back and forth from one bar to three bars. Never happened with OS 3.1.3.

For those having Wi-Fi issues... What level of encryption are you using on your routers? And is your router at full power? I'm not really having any Wi-Fi issues, I'm using WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES] and I switch my router to full power after I started having the iOS4 batter problem. (it was on "Neighbor Friendly" Mode). I was worried that a weaker signal would contribute even more to the already existing battery drain and I'm figuring that having the encryption on the highest level is also affecting the battery as well, but I haven't tested the difference.
Using WEP + hidden SSID at home (I have some devices that choke on WPA). Open WiFi access with authentication at work. Router signal boosted from 42mW to 70mW using Tomato firmware.
Also, if you're using a Pre-N router, disabling "Neighbor Friendly" mode means you're using a ton of 2.4GHz channels. This prevents any neighbors near your home from using WiFi, because you've stolen all of the available channels. I had to set up my sister-in-law on Wireless-A, because her backyard neighbor hates her, and turned off "Neighbor Friendly" mode on his router. What a pain.

  • 2nd gen 8G iPod Touch, upgraded to iOS4, now wifi doesn't work

I have a 2nd gen iPod Touch and I upgraded to iOs4 a few hours ago, and now my wifi won't connect no matter what I do. I've restored the whole iPod twice. I've renewed the lease on the wifi connection for our home network. I've done just about everything that I have found on the internet to try and help and nothing works.
I select our home network and type in the password and it "connects". But if I try to do anything online, it immediately says that it's not connected. It works otherwise, but I mainly use it for apps, and most of those apps need an internet connection. It's starting to seem like a very pretty paperweight.
I've seen that others have had similar problems, but has anyone found a fix for this yet? I can't afford to just go out and buy a new iPod, especially since the new operating system is what made it break

And I've done all of the steps on this link - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398

  • IOS4 observations and notes

From my own casual observations it seems that the people having trouble with iOS4 are those using a Windows OS. If this is the case you should hold off upgrading until a fix is issued for your system.
Further to anyone who is as of yet unaware any ipod touch under 32 GB is not capable of using all of the features from iOS4, such as homescreen wallpapers, multitasking and bluetooth keyboards.

I apologize if I came off as short with that post, wasn't meaning to. I definitely can't figure out a rhyme or reason to why it's doing this. The 2G seems to be a major culprit but this is weird. Frustrating as ****. I'll be leaving mine on for the night to see if it goes. If not, well, glad I have the two year warranty. I'll be using it.
Gee, this makes me feel great about just ordering an iPad Sunday. Not.

  • No persistent WiFi on 3GS running iOS4

One of the new feature on iOS4 is Persistent wifi even after you lock the phone. This is great for me since I'm on the 200Mb/mon data plan, and my iPhone 3GS is doing alot of background activities that consumes data while I'm at sleep, for example: fetch emails, push alerts, Exchange push...
What I've noticed after a month of iOS4 use is that the persistent wifi doesn't work as advertised, sometimes it works, but most of the time it disconnects me from wifi a moment after I locked the screen.
Anyone has answer to that? Is there an option to enable/disable the persistent wifi?

Basics from the User Guide are restart, reset, restore.  Have these been tried at all?

  • IOS4.3.1 kill my iPad WIFI connection

That's some complains about this issue from other users already, but seem no solutions yet.
    Here is my scenario:
I updated my iPad 3G+WIFI 32GB to iOS4.3.1, and iPad unable to find my WIFI hotspot since that, (not even my neighbourhood's hotspot), in the same time, my iPhone 4 with iOS4.3.1 work perfectly fine with the same router. iPad used to work fine with the same router same setting in iOS3.2.1.
I tried reset, both iPad and my router, I also tried to manual add the hotspot by select "Others", I even tried to change the WIFI setting from any combination of following: WPA, WPA2, No password, boardcast SSID, no boardcast SSID, channel etc etc. iPhone 4 work fine with all settings, but not my iPad. sigh.
I'm in Singapore, using SingTel boardband, 2WIRE 2701HGV-E (and 2700HGV) wireless router.
Anybody have the same issue? or better, have a solutions???
    Thank you so much!

Sorry this is not an answer, but i think is of note, as since i updated from 3 i have had constant wifi and 3g connection issues, despite using airport extreme as the router. This remained through 4.3.1' but having updated to 4.3.2 it appears to have finally fixed the issue.
However i am aware that many others have had no problems with connections with 4, to the point of condescension to those that have had. Therefore I wonder if 4.3.2 has fixed those Issues for some (including myself) but created connection problems for those who had previously been ok. Personally Ill be loath to update 4.* again now i have finally got a working ipad in case it reverts again.
So possibly a downgrade to a previous update may work for those just experiencing problems?

  • Turn of WIFI when locked - iOS4

It seems that the iPhone4 or either iOS4.0.1 have persistent wifi connections. Is that a setting that can be turned off?
I'd like to have the old behaviour, locked iphone = no wifi, active iphone = wifi.

I have this on my iphone 5.
2Gb Data plan almost done, previous iphone 4, rarely got over 500Mb Usage.
I understand this is LTE, but drop offs are constant. Network team tested with Fluke tester the signal. iPhone4 used to stay connected more.
Problem with phone & AP too

  • Lost wifi after ios4 update

Can anyone at Apple explain what to do if wifi option is totally unavailable on iphone 3g after ios4 upgrade? Is it a hardware or software issue?

I have the same issue. I updated from 3.1.3 to 4 lost voicemail had to reset that I've tried every option available to get wifi to connect and blutooth is doing the same thing as wifi it shows it is searching but it finds nothing. I tried to reset network it did not work. HELP!

  • IOS4 on 3GS - No WiFi

Yesterday I have installed iOS4 GM on my 3GS (running 3.1.3). I collaborate with two iPhone/iPad developing teams so I have access to the ADC pages for downloading iTunes 9.2 and the GM seed.
Everything went as planned but once the restore and sync finished I noticed that the WiFi field in Setting was grey out. I went to General/Network and also there it was grey out. No on/off switch.
I tried another restore. Same result. I have reset the network. Nada.
All the rest of the network connections work properly, including bluetooth.
I exclude an hardware issue because right before the installation the WiFi was working perfectly. I have searched in various forum but it seems I am the only one with this problem. Any idea?

I have problem with WiFi too. After upgrade to iOS4 (3GS) AP is connected, IP addr. obtained. On WiFi configuration tab everything seems OK, but no wifi communication (no wifi icon on display). Second thing - with (non working) wifi turned on, about 40% of battery is drained during 1 hour.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

  • My 3GS installed ios4.3.2 now wifi can connect but no network- anyone slse?

I can connect wifi but no network
    ios4.3.1 no problem

I Have the same on a brand new iPhone 4 (white) with iOS 4.3.2
Connecting to the WiFi network, but not getting an IP address (only 169.254.206.95)
    I tried:
    - forget network
    - Airplane mode on/of
    - restart iPhone
    - hard-reset iPhone
    - reset network settings
    - update firmware on Airport (timecapsule) + reboot
I'm kinda out of options here.
iPhones & iPad with older iOS version than 4.3.2 are still working perfect.
Anyone else having this issue, and more interesting, any solution??

  • IOS4, MS Exchange Email and Wifi???

None of my MS exchange emails were coming to my iPhone 3GS (with iOS4) yesterday. Today I turned off wifi through Settings (when I was at my office) and now I can receive my MS exchange emails - through 3G and Edge.
Then I turned off 3G in settings and although slower, I did receive MS exchange emails.
Hummmm.... I wonder if this is AT&T or Apple trying to get us to use 3G or Edge exclusively to increase our Data usage?? Since we don't have to pay for wireless Data...... Or could MS exchange be holding out upgrading their software?
Now I will test my bosses' new iPhone 4 to see if I can "fix" her MS exchange email issue by turning off wifi.....

I'm having the same problem. eMail messages are downloaded, I can see that happen. However, the eMail messages are not in my iCloud Inbos. Nor do the eMail messages go to my gmail Inbox. Strangely most, but not all eMails, can be found in gmail folder "Important".
I also had the same problem with Mobile Me, unfortunely at that time I did not have a gmail account. Those missing eMails from the Mobile Me Inbos were never recovered.

  • Please post if you have WiFi with WPA2-PSK and WEP working on iPod ios4

Quite a few people seem to be having difficulty with getting WiFi with WPA2-PSK and WEP working on iPod ios4. I'd like to know if anyone does have this working. Please let us know iPod model, access point (router) model, and security settings on your setup. I'm reluctant to upgrade if I can't get WiFi because quite a few of my favorite apps need the net. Please do NOT post to this thread if your WiFi is NOT working. Thanks
    I have:
    1. brand new (not yet even initialized) 32GB iPod Touch
    2. iPod Touch 8GB 3rd Gen
    3. Netcomm gateway/router/access point with security set as noted above.
Edit: if you don't know what Gen your iPod Touch is, please see:
    http://support.apple.com/specs/#ipodtouch
The easiest way to tell 2nd from 3rd gen is that 3rd gen has bluetooth (look in Settings/General -- if Bluetooth is there, your iPod is 3rd gen, if not it's 2nd gen or earler).

Thanks a lot to all who responded. I now have registered and upgraded my brand spanking new 32GB iPod Touch to ios4. Before I updated, I registered the new iPod, set up and checked the WiFi connection as described in my OP (except that it was AES - not WEP as noted above) and it worked just fine. I then updated to ios4 and it still worked fine, with no further input from me. It just connected as it should have after the update and all internet functions connect and work as expected.
To those who have had problems, my sympathy, but the problems are clearly not due only to ios4 -- there has to be something else going on with your connections.

  • Wary about upgrading my wife's 3gs from ios4 to ios6. will the data associated with an app be lost or will it be restored from the backup after the upgrade completes. There is no way to export, email or even print the data contained in the app

wary about upgrading my wife's 3gs from ios4 to ios6. will the data associated with an app be lost or will it be restored from the backup after the upgrade completes. There is no way to export, email or even print the data contained in the app so I am concerned

If the backup and restore takes place properly, you shouldn't have any issue as millions of people have done an update from iOS 4.

  • IPod Touch 2G w/OS3.0: WiFi + BT observations and issues

I have an iPod Touch 2G with OS3.0. I have had the Touch for about 5 months and had a great experience using OS2.x. I upgraded to 0S3.0 the day it was released and have recently begun experimenting with Bluetooth connectivity. I've noticed a general overall slow-down in OS responsivness after installing OS3.0, but some of that has been reduced by freeing memory occasionally using iStat. Still, I often get brief (0.1s to 10s) but annoying periods of seeming lock-up with no touch-screen response when browsing play lists, surfing the internet etc. I should mention that I have about half (8G of 16G) of my storage (NAND) memory used. DRAM usage is more or less out of my control and often runs between 2M and 21M free depending on how recently I have "freed memory" using iStat.
When using BT with WiFi disabled I get predicable reasonable performance. No pauses or gaps in audio playback. Good sound quality. Great range for BT.
When using WiFi with BT disabled I also get reasonable performance. I get up/download speeds limited only by internet connection bandwidth which is 5-7 Mbps download and about 500-700 kbps upload at my home on my cable modem connection as recorded by Ookla Speed Test. I get 1.4Mbps both directions at work where we have a T1 connection to the Internet. My home download numbers decrease slightly (500 kbps)if I play a song (thru built-in speaker or ear buds) during the test. I attribute this to CPU utilization, but I can't be sure without more testing.
When I have BT and WiFi enabled at the same time, I begin to experience some problems....
1 - If there are no BT devices in range (BT is on, but not connected to anything) I don't notice any issues. However, if I stream audio to a BT device, I see a noticable slow-down in WiFi performance. I see home WiFi downlowad speeds drop to 500kbps (a 10x reduction) and upload speeds decrease to 300kbps (2x reduction). I have not tested this at work yet, but plan to do so. I'm not totally sure that this is a "problem" exactly as it could simply be BT and WiFi packets colliding with one another and / or sharing bandwidth on the wired interface between the radio IC and the CPU and / or a CPU bandwidth limitation.
2 - If I steam audio to a BT device while outside WiFi coverage (or between coverage zones) the audio will often times pause for anywhere from 0.1 to 1.0 second at a rate of about one pause per minute or more often. As soon as I connection to a WiFi network, the pauses go away. This is definitely a problem. It is very reproducable and one that I hope Apple will investigate and correct in a future OS revision.
For now I try to keep my BT and WiFi use mutually exclusive where possible. If I do use them at the same time, I make sure that I'm in a good WiFi coverage zone with reasonable internet connection.
If anyone else has experiece with WiF + BT useage on a 2G Touch with OS3.0, please report it so that (hopefully) Apple will have data to use for fixes in upcoming OS updates.
    Doug

I just recently updated my iPod Touch 2G with OS3.0 and I also notice that the speed of my internet got slow when I use my iPod. I haven't tried the BT yet. Everytime I use my iPod using internet, mails or video streaming, I always test my internet speed using the speedtest app by Ookla when it was still at its 2.X firmware. Its the same speed as I check using my computer. Internet speed is 1Gbps.
But now, after upgrading it to OS3.0, the internet connection is slow. Download speed now is at its half. Upload speed is the same I think. I tried checking my devices such as the modem cabels and the WiFi config and the settings are still the same. I even tried to play with my WiFi setting and set it to Wireless G mode only, but the output is still the same.
I've check also the forums that's posted at the intenet and it says there that you could try these steps:
    1. Try to power cycle the iPod - Same result. WiFi connection speed still the same.
    2. Check if the WiFi has a WiFi address - Checked that under settings>general>about. It does have a WiFi Address and also the BT.
    3. Try Reset Network Setting - I also tried that but nothing's change. Same speed as before.
I even tried to download another speed test app. But still the output is the same. I don't know what is causing the issue of the new firmware but the I the new features it. Hopefully there is someone there from Apple that could take a look at this.
As for now, I'll stick with the previous firmware.
    Rey
