Ios5 update erased my apps

After I just downloaded the ios5 update, all the apps on my phone are gone.  I'm sure I can redownload them again, but i'm worried that the apps which had information stored in them are not recoverable.  Anyone had similar experience?  Is there any way to get that back?  I had backed up all my purchases before I started the update, so I am not sure why it happened?

If you've transferred your purchases over to your iTunes before you updated, then you should be able to re-sync your app with their information stored.

  • IOS5 update erased all my app data AND all backups made prior to update...

I know there are lots of people who have had similar problems when updating with a PC but I still can't find a solution.  So maybe there isn't a solution.  But my question is this: I made two back-to-back backups of my ipad onto my friend's iTunes (on his PC).  Then I sync'd.  Then I updated to iOS5 (which did a final backup before it updated).  When I restored, I was asked for a password -- when I never encrypted it with a password!  So I tried every password known to me (on my iPad, iTunes, etc.) and I tried every password on my friend's PC.  Nothing worked.  Eventually, iTunes stopped asking me for a password.  But whenever I tried to do a new restore, it would only give me the option to restore from backups made AFTER the iOS5 update.  I have no idea what happened to the several backups I made BEFORE the update.  What a pain!  Does anyone have any ideas?  I spent two and half hours on the phone with Apple Care last night.  They had no ideas whatsoever.  They kept telling me that my backups must have been corrupted.  I don't know... feels like a cop-out on their part (even if they are right...).  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thx guys.
P.S. Oddly, my iBooks content remained in tact despite the fact that all other apps were gutted of content).  And the native Notes app was also gutted of content.  I guess from now on I will have to loop Dropbox into everything.

I did look for the backups.  The only backups showing are the ones that I made after the update (when I was sync'ing in a desperate bid to try to recover my app content).  I did not turn off auto-syncing beforehand.  In retrospect, I obviously made a mistake of some sort.  At the very least, I should have made redundant backups, etc.  But to continue, No, I am not sure that the backups were successfully made.  But I am totally sure that the PC went through the motions of making at least two backups -- it said as much on the screen.  Also, when I foraged through all the newer, hidden files on the PC, I found bits and pieces of the initial backup I made, all time-stamped correctly.  I found the contents there for my iBook app, and I found backups of most but not all of my other apps (but not their content).  So definitely there was some sort of general backup that took place.  Just not the full backup/s I'd hoped for... Yes, iTunes did warn me that the iPad would be erased, but I assumed that was all part-and-parcel of the iOS5 update.  That said, the first time I got the warning, I stopped the update and backed up (and then sync'd) again, just to make sure.  Only afterwards did I go through with the update.
I am guessing there is not much I can do anymore at this point.  But thanks for the feedback and, if you do think of anything, or anywhere else on the PC where I could try to look for the backups, please let me know.  Thank you!  Your help is much appreciated.

  • IOS5 update deleted my apps

After updating to iOS5, none of my apps are showing up. any way to restore without downloading all the apps again?

Not sure I was clear in previous post.  I had 2 blank pages on my apps screen after I finihsed the process.  I wondered where the heck my apps went.  Then I remembered by son telling me to "scroll over the blank pages and you might find your apps.  Don't know why they created a couple of blank pages but there they were!  Good luck.

  • Will downloading an iPhone update erase my apps off my phone?

In my iTunes library, none of my apps appear. I'm worried that because of this, when I update my iPhone, it will erase all the apps of of it. I know I can just redownload all the apps, I would just like to not have to and to not have to lose all the progress on my games. So, if there is a way i can solve this or if i dont have to worry about it, I would really appreciate it.

Have you ever synced your iPhone with iTunes?

I am having the same problem. Did turning off iCloud work? Did you just turn everything off or did you actually delete the account off your iPod?

Hello. After updating my Ipad2 to Ios5 Ive missed some Apps( pages and numbers). What's wrong with my device? Thanx

Were the apps on your computer's iTunes when you started the update process ?
As long as the apps are still available in the store, and you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to buy them, then you should be able to re-download them for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519 . If you download them to your computer's iTunes you could then try restoring to your backup and see if that restores them and their settings/content - a backup doesn't contain the actual apps, just their content/settings, so for the restore to work fully iTunes needs access to the apps so that it can restore them.

  • After updating to ios5 most of my apps are gone! Help!

I synced my iPad to my iTunes but after updating my iPad to ios5, most of my apps are not in iTunes and they are wiped off of my iPad! What did I do wrong? I can't even remember half of the apps I purchased. Most of them were for my 5-year old son. I downloaded all of them through the App Store. Is there a way to get them all back without knowing what each of them is called? I had so many!!! Someone please help me!

As long as the apps are still available in the store, and you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to buy them, then you should be able to re-download them for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519 .Those that are still in the store should be listed in the Purchased link on the right-hand side of the iTunes Store home page on your computer's iTunes, and there should be a 'download all' button at the bottom of it so you don't have to re-download them one-by-one.
When you've downloaded them to your computer you could then try restoring to your backup and see if that copies them and their content back to the iPad (the backup itself doesn't contain the actual apps, just their content/settings, so for the restore to work it needs access to the actual apps)

  • Apps crashing/not opening after iOS5 update. Help please?

Before the iOS5 update, my apps use to crash like 5% of the time, but after I updated it, depending which app I use (for example: Plants vs. Zombies, which is the app that does this the most) crashes almost all the time. It's really annoying, epecially if it takes a long time for the app to load. The other day, last week, I bought the app game Pandemonium! (after seeing it was a game I use to play on the first PlayStation) but when I was about to play it, it wouldn't work. I restarted the app (by holding the lock button, then holding the home button) it didn't work. I deleted the app then reinstalled it, and it didn't work, still. Then I restarted my iPod and it still didn't work! I then read the reviews, and everybody who had updated to iOS5 had the same problem (white screen, then it goes back to the main menu where the app is located). I don't want to delete the apps, the reinstall it, because I will lose everything I worked hard for, and it really hurts when that happens, so what can I do? Especially for the Pandemonium! game as I really was looking forward to play that

    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Try installing a new app
    - Restore fro backup.  Your app data like game progress will be restored
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

Disconnected from what? the computer? Did you connect to the computer again, launch iTunes and then do as I described above?
You have selected all of the apps to sync - put checkmarks in all of the boxes next to the app names and have the Sync Apps heading checked as well?
Do you have restrictions set on the iPad? Settings>General>Restrictions>On?
Are you signed into the correct iTunes account on the iPad and the computer?

  • After ios5 update My Ipod keeps crashing, and the internet stops but shows wifi sign

Well, this all happened after the Ios5 update to my ipod touch 4th gen. The problems are that when im using my wifi, it just stops as if im not getting any reception, but it still shows the wifi sign on the top left corner. A temporary fix for this is to go to settings and put my ipod on airplane mode off and on to get it to work for like 5 minutes. Its really annoying when watching videos or on facebook, etc. The second problem that I've been having is that certain apps keep crashing on me, one that does it the most is safari, it seems to crash all the time for me and now my facebook, news apps, among others all seem to crash. I dont know if this is a problem with the update, but it sure seems like it. Is there any way to fix this?

  • How I fixed my broken iOS5 update/restore

Like many of you, my update to iOS5 caused me to lose all my content on both iPhone and iPad. I have lots of playlists and lots of app content in folders, and I've been trying various options while re-restoring my devices to get the content back. I've figured out what may be one bug in the process, and I've figured out how to work around it.
The core issue seems to be that the backed-up references to apps, and books, and playlists, and other content is not being resolved to their correct addresses during the restore, which leads to long delays and ultimately nothing being transferred. However, you can trick iTunes into updating these content references, and then many problems seem to go away and you can preserve your old app content, playlists, etc.
    Here's what I did.
Assumption: you had performed a full sync and a full backup with your original system before using the iOS5 updater. Unless the content is in iTunes on your computer, and unless you have a snapshot of devices state saved on the computer, I'm not sure how to salvage a botched restore. Hopefully this backup has not been overwritten...
    1) Take your device and perform a new iOS5 restore on it in iTunes. At the appropriate point, tell the program to Set Up your device from the original iOS4 backup you had made.
    2) In the last part of the restore process it will begin trying to resync your content back onto your device, but you can interupt that by pressing the close box in the status message area of iTunes. That resync is not going to work, or you wouldn't be reading this post. We're going to make that resync work by following the next steps...
    3) Working from right to left across the sync configuration screens in iTunes, you are now going to turn off the single content-type syncing options. So first press the single checkbox to turn off Photo syncing in the Photo tab, then turn off the single checkbox for Sync Books and the single checkbox for Sync Audiobooks in the next tab. Continue for iTunesU, Podcasts, TV, Movies, Music, Ringtones. Note: each of these area maintains pointers to the individual content items or playlists that you like, and when things get fixed we'll simply turn the top checkboxes back on and your particular content will flow back onto the device.
    4) Click on the Apps tab, and look at all of your app screens on the device. You may notice some apps that have white featureless icons. These are the bad apps that will ruin your restore; you must eliminate all the white icons! You have two ways of doing this: 1) if you don't need the app right away, click on the close box on its icon to remove it [don't worry, when everything is working again you can add that app back later from the iTunes configuration screen or by redownloading it to your device], 2) if you really want the app and it's saved state, then you must click on the close box and then find the app in the app list on the left and add it back in. When the app is added back in, it will have its colored icon. [NOTE: it may be possible to restore the color by simply moving the icon to a different location in its folder or window]
    5) Now go to the first Summary tab and press the Apply and/or Sync button to resync the device. This time the sync should work, and you should have your apps back with their saved state (assuming the app developers wrote the app to preserve their state)
    6) After you've got that part working, go back and reanable your other device syncing options (music, tv shows, books, etc). When you reenable these, they will still point at your content or playlists you had chosen previously. Press Apply/Sync again, and you should have all your content back on your device.
I can not vouch that this solution will work for you. I was stuck with two devices that I had to wipe clean to get working at all...and I really wanted my previously-backed-up content, and I've been re-restoring and playng around in order to find something that worked. My iOS5 devices now have all my old iOS4 content, and I'm very happy I don't have to replay Plant vs Zombies from the beginning.
I hope this posting can help someone else complete the migration successfully...
