Ios6 and iPad 2 battery drain disaster

What is the latest from apple about the ios6 impact on battery drain on the iPad......it's a real problem...and ensuring you need a 10v battery charger is also a real pain.

There is no general battery drain issue in iOS 6. If you are having a problem it is specific to your device. Note, very few users of the huge iPad base are having this problem.
If you really have a problem with battery usage try the following:
Back up your iPad with iTunes
Restore your iPad as a new device using iTunes
Test your iPad battery usage (see how long it takes to drain the battery).
If it is OK then restore from your backup. Test to see if still OK.
If it is not OK, your iPad may have a hardware problem, contact Apple Support.
Note: The iPad 2 charger is 10W not 10v.

What kind of ipad mini / ipad 2 you got?
    AFAIK,
    1. ipads drain battery with 3g/4g on (regardless on wifi or not) 1% overnight.. so for 7 days .. 65 is about correct.
    2. Are your ipads setup to receive remote push notification? (more push = more battery drain.. as the screen lit up)
    3. With iOS 6 vs iOS 4 .. there are more stuff running in the background and more toggles.. that could also contribute to battery drain.

  • Update my iphone and now the battery drains very quickly

update my iphone and now the battery drains very quickly

my battery started draining after 4 or 5 hours on iPhone 4 8GB with little or no use. It was suggested in some of the threads I consulted that it might be related to a server malfunction on an email account, and to delete the account, hard boot the phone, and re-install the account, Sure enough, this worked for me. Charged at 100% at 11pm and got up next morning at 6am at 100% ( turned the email push notifications to OFF as well ) The previous 2 days I would get up and there would be less 10% battery life. A few days before this problem started my email provider had a server issue with Outlook, I couldnt get emails to and from that account to load on my iphone, so I suspect that this was the problem; iphone and or email provider was still trying to get those emails and this was causing the drain.

  • 10.8.5 upgrade and  now the battery drain is terrible

I recently updated my MacBook Pro to 10.8.5 and now the battery drain is terrible.  Any suggestions?  I check the activity monitor and that seems to be fine.

    1. Check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
    2. If not, follow these instructions.
    3. You can also try resetting the SMC.
    4. Make sure your system is up to date in Software Update.
    5. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • IPad 2 battery drain after iOS 5.0.1 update!!!

iPad 2 battery is draining way too fast after the 5.0.1 update - I've lost over 10% just browsing the apple site over wifi for about 10 minutes - with no other apps running. NOT ACCEPTABLE APPLE!!!
Same issue with my iPhone 4 that went from 62% when I went to bed last night to completely dead this morning - unused!!
Apple - roll 5.0 back out to replace this battery leech. I need to be able to actually USE my products.

Same issue here! I've been reading on my fully-charged iPad and the battery is down to 78%. Never did this before the latest update. Yesterday, iPad quit before my usual evening reading!  Any solutions!
I have personally seen the problem and corrected it on numerous models now including the 4S, 4, 3GS and iPad 2s.  Corrupt system level settings created by an iOS 5 bug in the original release that caused battery recalibration issues, etc.  Just installing the update does not fix the issue in most cases (sometime it initially can be worse).  You need to clear out those settings and recalibate the battery.  For those still having the "standby battery drain" issue follow the procedure below in order.  It does fix the problem in most cases.
Go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:
    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)
    2. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). At this point, Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)
    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd
    4. Fully discharge battery  (tilll it shuts off with the spinning wheel)
    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)
In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

  • IPad 2 battery draining 7% overnight - anything I can check?

I've notice lately that my iPad 2 battery seems to be draining about 7% overnight. For example, last night before going to sleep I noted it was at 54% charge, but this morning when I opened the magic cover it was at 47%.
Yesterday I did try rebooting the iPad 2. And this past week when it drained down to essentially zero I did a full recharge from nothing.
Are there other things I can check? I don't think this is normal. I haven't seen this happen in the past, I don't think.
    Any suggestions would be welcome.
    Thanks,
    doug

Thanks for your responses people. Just a few added comments:
Diavonex: The brightness level can't be the culprint because the iPad is asleep and the screen is off.
I'm not using bluetooth. I do have wi-fi and 3G enabled though. I suppose I could turn those off each night. That would be a non-optimal solution of course, since I don't really know when the last time I will use my iPad will be, and then having to turn the connectivity back again seems like a nuisance. But it's certainly something worth trying.
Yet.. I'm pretty sure this has just started happening recently.
SteveJobsFan0123: I tried rebooting my iPad. Wouldn't that have closed all the apps? That's the reason I tried that.
Rysz: Well, there seems to be one vote saying it's normal and another saying it's not normal. I'll be the tie-breaker. I am almost certain I have not seen this until very recently so I will say it's not normal.
pj123: I don't have any email fetch schedules. Though I do have a few imap email accounts. Do they automatically push, even when Mail is closed? Not using the alarm clock at all.
Anyway, I turned off everything in the notification center to see if that helps. Not sure what else to try at the moment.
    Thanks,
    doug

  • IPad 3G - Battery Drain in standby mode in areas of strong 3G coverage

I'm having an issue with my 2-week old iPad 3G that I cannot seem to find reference to in this forum so I'd be grateful for any assistance that can be provided.
Despite switching off all push notifications, in areas of strong cell coverage the battery charge on my iPad 3G drops at an alarming rate whilst in standby mode (6% per hour). Switching the iPad to WiFi only and putting it into standby mode reduces the discharge rate to less than 1% every 5 hours.
I've compared the performance of my device with the exact same specification device of a colleague using the same network (O2 in the UK) in the same location (our office) and his device drops less than 0.5% charge per hour in standby mode whilst connected to the 3G bearer.
My initial thoughts are 1) faulty SIM card which is causing the device to continually poll the network or 2) faulty 3G radio module which needs replacing.
I've reset the device and conditioned the battery, all to no avail. 7% battery drain per hour limits the mobility of the device and I'd very grateful for any ideas.
    Many thanks

This seems like a poster child story for the use of an integrated SIM in the next iPhone and iPad. Since this would eliminate the user having to switch sim cards and the likelihood of getting a bad SIM.
Thank you for coming back and letting us all know about your issue and your resolution.

  • IPad 2 battery draining faster with iOS 7

Since upgrading to iOS 7, my iPad 2's batter has been draining much faster than before the upgrade.
One thing that might be contributing to this is how 7 revamped how it displays "open" applications.  Prior to 7 if you hit the Home button twice it would diisplay a row of icons at the bottom showing which apps were "active" or "open."  You could press an hold any icon and all icons would go int wiggle mode, and you could select certain processes and quit them.  This I did regualrly.
Now with iOS 7, tapping the Home button twice shows large images of the last screen in the apps shown at the bottom, showing just two or three, making it a slow process to side-scroll to find an app.  Gone is the means of quitting open apps as well.  My list of open apps is pretty long and I'm sure that with so many open processes, the batter charge takes a big hit.
I've looked in all the system settings and don't see any way to toggle or set the system such that I can quit running apps.
    So, here's my two-part question:
    1.  What steps can I take to slow the battery drain?
    2.  How can I close open apps?
Bonus:  How to revert the ugly "open apps" display back to something that resembles previous versions, particularly how to get rid of the screenshots that take up so much room?
    Many thanks!
    -Tod

PS:  There ought to be a forum for iOS issues rather than forcing users to post in hardware-specific forums.

If the drain seems extreme there may be something else going on.
First try a reset: Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons and don’t let go until the screen goes dark and the Apple logo appears (no data will be lost)
If that does not help, backup & Restore the iOS Software

  • Ipad mini battery draining 1 percent every five minutes literally help

My iPad mini battery seems to be draining 1 percent every five To ten minutes. I have only had it off the charger for about two hours after full charge, an its already close to fifty percent left.
    Wifi only tablet no lte

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • I updated my 4s and now my battery drains extremely quick!!!!!!

I Updated my 4s yesterday and now my battery is draining so quickly that it is very frustrating.

Sounds as if something damaged the phone and could possibly be shorting out the battery. Try to get a backup of the device as soon as possible and make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple Store to have the hardware examined.

  • Water damage to my iPhone 5s and now the battery drains quickly

My water bottle leaked through my bag and got into my phone, when I discovered this I have no idea how long it had been sitting in water for. It wouldnt turn on so I immediately put it in rice in a snap lock bag. After a few hours it turned on again and all seemed to be fine but now the battery drains very quickly, even when no apps are open.
I only got the phone a few weeks ago. Is this something that will be cheap to fix by apple or am I better off trying to do it myself?

Also my finger print thing doesnt work but I can live without that, but i cant live withouth a battery
