Ios7- why do i need cellular data on?

Can someone please explain to me why I need Cellular Data ON for any apps on my iPhone 4? It seems to me that I can use all my apps with it off.
Thanks!

It's a smart phone... it's designed to be constantly connected to the Internet. If you turn off cellular data, and you're not actively connected to a WiFi network, then you have no data connection...
No e-mail, no web browsing, no MMS messaging, no iMessage, no new in your news apps, no weather in your weather apps, not chatting with your friends in your IM apps... should I go on?

  • Why do I need Cellular Data turned on to send/receive MMS?

So after over 3 hours on the phone with Verizon, Apple, then Verizon again trying to figure out why I can't send or receive mms messages unless Cellular Data is on, doing a hundred soft/hard/network/every reset imaginable, a Verizon rep this morning told me "you cannot use mms unless the cellular data is switched to "on", and there are NO PHONES that will allow you to send mms without it on".
Ok, so how come when I had flip phones that didn't even have data plans, I was able to send MMS? And the biggest question - how come I never ever turned my 3G on on my droid and yet could still send SMS? Why does the iPhone force me to keep cellular data on, eating away at my 150mb data plan that I can barely even afford and would rather only have wifi on?

    Look here, from Apple:
The following table shows the requirements and capabilities of Messages on iOS.
    Device Required
    iOS Required
    Connectivity Required
    Recipient Types Allowed
    Content Types Allowed
    SMS
    iPhone
    1.0 and later
    Cellular
    Phone number
    Text only
    MMS
    iPhone 3G and later
    3.1 and later
    Cellular data
    Phone number
    Text, audio1, photos, and video
    iMessage
    iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    5.0 and later
    Cellular data or Wi-Fi
    Phone number or email address
    Text, audio1, photos, and video
See what it says about MMS? That answer your question.

  • Why do you need cellular capabilities on the Ipad?

Why do you need cellular capabilities on the Ipad?  Is this only necessary if you intend to use it as  a phone?  Is it necessary to have if you want to Skype?

I normally like to buy from the Store. You can check it on the spot for defects.

  • Why does iphone use cellular data to contact internet when wifi is available?

If I leave Mobile Data (or Cellular Data) enabled on my iphone,
I find that the phone uses my carrier phone service to access the internet about 10 times
per day. The accesses tend to be mostly very small data transfers (say about 10KB).
I have no idea why these transfers are taking place, but I can see them on my Vodofone bills.
Since I am rarely away from my home wifi facility, I would also expect any access to
use wifi as a first choice, and notify me if there was a need to use cellular access.
So I have 2 questions. What are these data transfers that I am not explicitly requesting,
and why are these data transfers not made through free home wifi as a first choice.
Apple has advised me to turn off mobile data unless I am away from my free wifi.
    Mike

Thanks for the reply. I haven't used visual voicemail. My preference would be for any data transfer to be done on wifi when wifi is available. Battery life is not currently an issue for me. I do think that it shoud be possible to find out which service or app is causing the data transfer. Although I am not near my data limit at present, I do think that I have a right to know why a service, for which
    i pay, is bring used.

  • Settings App needs Cellular Data??

Since the install of iOS 8 on my iPhone 5 I went in and verified which of my installed Apps get access to cellular data.  In doing this I noticed that the Settings App is now listed.  I couldn't for the life of me figure out why this particular app would need to access data, let alone data that I'm paying for so I shut is off.  Now every time I access Settings I'm interrupted and have to acknowledge this choice.  SUPER annoying.
Apple, Why does this App need my data access and why should it be turned on?

Is it just one app? Did you try deleting and reinstalling it? The app could be buggy and you should try to find an alternative.

  • Downloaded podcast needs cellular data to play as streaming?

Recently, the podcasts app will auto-download a podcast, and the first or sometimes second time I try to play it (and am not on WiFi) it will ask:
    Use Cellular Data
Would you like to temporarily turn
on Cellular Data in order to play
    back this streaming episode?
I'm not sure why it's streaming...ostensibly it is downloaded and stored on my iPhone. These podcasts are set as: subscription on, auto-download all, keep last 10. I have > 1.5 GB of free space available.
Not entirely sure what's going on here.

I'm having the same problem as well on my 5S and it's only on the Tiesto Club Life podcast. Here's what works for me:
    - Download episode(s)
    - Start episode(s) with wifi or cellular (with cellular for podcasts turned on)
    - Turn off cellular for podcasts
    - Listen to podcasts as usual
I tested this by turning off cellular/wifi completely and it still plays the podcasts so I know this is not pulling from cellular. It's a pain but you only have to do this once after downloading and it looks like episodes stay playable without cellular usage.

  • Why do you need a date of birth to sign in to AdobeRevel??

By trying to sign in to AdobeRevel I was quite surprised that you requested a date of birth. Why??
    JB Dayle

    Hello Dayle
The software asks for your date of birth to confirm that you are over the age of 13. This information is part of the terms of the software agreement http://www.adobe.com/misc/terms.html

  • Why do we need SSIS and star schema of Data Warehouse?

If SSAS in MOLAP mode stores data, what is the application of SSIS and why do we need a Data Warehouse and the ETL process of SSIS?
I have a SQL Server OLTP database. I am using SSIS to transfer my SQL Server data from OLTP database to a Data Warehouse database that contains fact and dimension tables.
After that I want to create cubes using SSAS form Data Warehouse data.
I know that MOLAP stores data. Do I need any Data warehouse with Fact and Dimension tables?
Is not it better to avoid creating Data warehouse and create cubes directly from OLTP database?

Another thing to note is data stored in transactional system may not always be in end user consumable format for ex. we may use bit fields/flags to represent some details in OLTP as storage required ius minimum but presenting them as is would not make any
sense to user as they would not know what each bit value represents. In such cases we apply some transformations and convert data into useful information for users to understand. This is also in the warehouse so that information in warehouse can directly be
used for reporting. Also in many cases the report will merge data from multiple source systems so merging it on the fly in report would be tedious and would have hit on report server. In comparison bringing them onto common layer (warehouse) and prebuilding
aggregates would be benefitial for the report performance.
I think (not sure) we join tables in SSAS queries and calculate aggregations in it.
I think SSAS stores these values and joined tables and we do not need to evaluates those values again and this behavior is like a Data Warehouse.
    Is not it?
So if I do not need historical data, Can I avoid creating Data Warehouse?
On the backend SSAS uses queries only to extract the data
B/w I was not explaining on SSAS. I was explaining on what happens inside datawarehouse  which is a relational database by itself. SSAS is used to built cube (OLAP structures) on top of datawarehouse. star schema is easier for defining relationships
and buidling aggregations inside SSAS as its simple and requires minimal lookups to be performed. Also data would be held at lowest granularity level which can easily be aggregated to required levels inside OLAP cubes. Cube processing is very resource
intensive and using OLTP system would really have a huge impact on processing performance as its nnot denormalized and also doing tranformation etc on the fly adds up to complexity. Precreating a layer (data warehouse) having data in required format would
make cube processing easier and simpler as it has to just cross join tables and aggregate data based on relationships defined and level needed inside the cube.

  • I am no longer able to turn off cellular data usage for individual apps.  When I turn most of them off, they just automatically reset themselves to allow data usage.  Any thoughts?

I am no longer able to turn off cellular data usage for individual apps.
When I turn most of them off, they just automatically reset themselves to allow data usage.
    Any thoughts?

I am definately having the same problem and cannot believe there are no answers or even support that this problem exists.  I never have to post on forumns, I read what is usually readilly availiable for the craziest of problems.
Anyways, the problem is just that, I can toggle off a individual app's setting of cellular data availability, but it changes right back on rescreening.  After restarting, resetting etc, it seems that the big Apple Apps are the biggest offenders.  Music is a very important one, Podcasts can kill you very quickly, app store, Photos, Facetime, Stocks?!?!?!
When one searches for solutions I have to see hundreds of links to "How great is ios7, you can turn off cellular data for individual apps FOR DUMMIES!".  I am a dedicated apple fool since the Apple IIe (long time), but when they run afowl it is usually really bad.  Why offer an on/off switch if the setting is always on?
I am writing just to add support to the existence of this problem, not so much for people to offer ideas of solutions as I now believe it is in the coding.
    Thank you

  • Why is my texting using data? When I have data turned off I can't send/receive. Texting is "unlimited" but it's using up all my data- help!

Why is my texting using data? When I have data turned off I can't send/receive. Texting is "unlimited" but it's using up all my data- help!

Texting longer text messages or any media (pictures/video/sound etc) being sent requires data to be active. However, it does not count against your data caps.
Since you have an iPhone, you must also be aware of the difference between iMessage and SMS Text messages. The iPhone, by default, will send an iMessage when sending another text message to anyone else with an iPhone, iTouch, or iPad. This does use your data if you are not connected to wifi. In Settings, you can turn iMessage off, and then all of your texts will go through Verizon.
Also understand- iMessage will use wifi when connected to wifi, but would need cellular data connection to work when not connected to wifi. Regular SMS text messages that are long or any media will always use the cellular data and not wifi, so will not send if cellular data is turned off, even if on wifi. However, this does not count against your cap.

  • Notifications use cellular data if it's turned off?

hello, i've had my iphone 4 a little over a month and i'm loving it!
i keep my cellular data turned off because i almost always am wi-fi connected. if i'm not, and i need to access the internet, i just turn on cellular data and then back off when i'm done.
i run the google app for mail/calendar since my email is gmail and i use facebook. i have them both set to notify me of alerts. my question is this....is it correct that i will only receive notifications if i have a wi-fi connection because my cellular data is off? what i don't want to happen is that my cellular data gets automatically turned on to receive those notifications.
thanks in advance for any replies!
    p.s....one more issue
is it true that i need cellular data turned on just to receive a picture in a text message? when i was with verizon, i received pics in a text message, it was not a smart phone and i had no data plan. it seems crazy to have to access the internet just to receive a picture in a text message!
    thanks again!

Two for two! Thanks very much. I used the arrangements screen to switch where OS X positioned the external monitor (i.e., I have mine on the left, it is on the right by default) but I didn't try to move the menu bar. Works great!
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Why do we need header datasource?

I just got confused?  Why do we need header data table if line items datasource contains all the field of header datasource?   Another thing is that should we create different ODS'  for each?

    Hi George..
Choosing an header or a line item data source depends on the reporting requirements which is the very initial phase in any implementation project.. There, if the requirement is to develop a report at the header level (which will be summarized eg: Reports based on Sales Organization or for a particular Sold to party) then you go in for a Header level data source... but if the requirement is such that the report will have to display each and every line item (detailed eg: all the materials ordered during a sale order creation), then you go in for a line item level datasource...
    Hope it clears your doubt..
