Ios8 gps arrow always on

After installing iOS8, (on my iphone 5) the GPS arrow is always on next to my battery percentage. It is causing my battery to drain. I have closed all running apps and it still remains on. Does anyone else have this problem?

UPDATE:
After reviewing my location services settings for each individual app, I realized the 2 culprits for my gps arrow being on constantly were Google and Foursquare. I changed those settings to "Never" and now the gps arrow is gone.

  • 5s when bluetooth is on gps arrow shows

When I turn on my bluetooth the gps arrow shows up but not filled in like it is being used.  When I turn off bluetooth the gps symbol disappears.  When a program uses gps the arrow shows up like it is supposed to then turn off like it is supposed to.  I did a full wipe and restore and the same problem shows up.  checked my wife's 5s and hers does not have this problem.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

If you go to Settings>Privacy>Location Services, you will see that an outlined location services icon represents an item that is using geofence. If you look at the apps listed there under location services, you should be able to tell what item is using the location service or GPS. This could be in Reminders, or Find My Friends app, or something like that.
    Hope that helps.

  • Time zone purple arrow always active iOS 5.0.1

Is this happening for every one? The time zone  location service is ALWAYS active in 5.0.1 in both my 4S and my iPad 2.

I'm also noticing this after the update.  In 5.0 my iPad 1 had the purple arrow always on, no matter what, and my iPhone 4S was normal (arrow just once in a while, briefly).  Now, after the update, both have the arrow on for really really really long periods of time.  However, at least on the iPad, there's a difference: whereas before the update, this was clearly running down the battery quickly, after the update, it doesn't seem to be affecting the battery much.  (I read for quite a while with the arrow on and battery at 99%, which would not have happened before, when I could practically watch it tick down without blinking)
On both devices, the arrow *does* eventually turn off, but it takes a long long time to decide to do so.  (Maybe an hour, even)    It's annoying that whereas the iPhone had been acting "normally" before the update and it was a big problem on the iPad, now both devices are stuck with this semi-problem.  Fixing the broken one would have been better than half-fixing the broken one and half-breaking the OK one!

  • GPS test always fails.

I don't know if I have to post this but in my device testing GPS always fails through service menu as well as diagnostic app. However in map, location and navigation works fine. I have tried few workarounds but it's always the same.
P.S. I have read somewhere that there is a test for battery in service menu but for me there is no such option. Z1C lollipop.

It can't say for sure but it's possible. It works fine (both diagnostics and service menu) when i test it here so it seems there's something in your phone causing it.
You could try doing a repair of the phones software in PC Companion and see if it helps but it it's causes by the missing DRM-keys it will not help. But if the GPS works in other apps it's perhaps not something you need to fix?

  • IPhone 5 iOS8 GPS dropping out

The GPS on my iPhone 5 has been dropping recently. It will work fine for 5-10 minutes and then drop to cell location only. Anyone else experiencing this?

Here you can find some useful tips on how to make the battery life of your device longer. They work for both iOS 8.2 and iOS 8.3.

  • With iOS8, bookmark menu always present when in landscape.

After installing iOS8 on my iPad mini, if I'm on safari, and I turn to landscape, the bookmark menu appears AND WILL NOT GO AWAY.  Has this happened to anyone else?  Can't find a way to minimize or close that drop down menu when I'm in landscape.

I simply tap the Bookmark icon, (open book) top left next to the url entry box and the menu appears and disappears with no issue, if on, and switch to portrait the bookmark menu goes off screen and come back by selecting the icon.
Have you tried resetting your ipad, hold power and home button simultaneously for 15-20 seconds until you see the Apple logo, no data will be lost

  • GPS coordinates with minutes and seconds always 0

I noticed the geotagged photos from my Android phone (Samsung Galaxy S3 with Android 4.3.1 Jelly Bean) have GPS coordinates always rounded to integers in Aperture. However when viewing the photo coordinates on the phone directly before importing in Aperture, or using a non-Apple tool (such as ExifTool), precise coordinates with minutes and seconds are displayed. After some research, I conclude this is an Apple bug. It affects iPhoto and Preview.app too (probably due to same underlying code reading Exif tags).
Did you experience the same bug? What phone and firmware were used to take the picture?
For the technical record, here's the bug (which I've notified to Apple). Internally (in the binary format of Exif tags), coordinates are represented by 3 values for degrees, minutes and seconds. Each of these values is represented by a rational number encoded with 2 integers (numerator and denominator). Most cameras will set an integer in the degrees values, and fractional part in the minutes and/or seconds. This format is properly decoded by Aperture. It is however valid format to set minutes and seconds values to 0, and a non-integer value in degrees, such as 70,764,776 / 10,000,000 = 7.0764776 deg. This format is not correctly parsed by Aperture.

Yosemite has fixed the issue. Coordinates are now correctly displayed.

  • GPS doesn't always talk

Why does my gps not always talk to me when using the map?  It still gives directions, but doesn't talk all the time.

Same here, after I upgraded to the latest iOS - my GPS doesn't work when I'm offline or in flight mode...too bad I found out about it while traveling to Rome ant trying to navigate here with an offline map and no data plan..is there a way to fix this issue or at least check the GPS module? Also, I see this thread open since April and no answer from Apple...I know 3GS is old but still...a little support would be appreciated...

  • Getting inaccurate GPS location on iPhone6, iOS 8.1.1

Is anyone encountering problems with GPS with iPhone 6, ios 8.1.1? I compared it with my ipad air (ios7) and ip5 (ios7) both air and ip5 are accurate, ip6 is off in terms of location. I can't remember but I think before (8.0.2) updating to 8.1.1 everything was okay in terms of location.
Everytime i change wifi connection it restores to accurate point, but after a while it becomes inaccurate again, i tried turning off wifi and use cellular data it just gets the last point.
    image here

Same here. I noticed 2 things.
    1) First I noticed that the GPS was constantly on (GPS arrow icon showing). This was not the case before my update to IOS 8.1.1. And I hadn't installed new apps after (or right before) the upgrade.
    2) Second I noticed that the location isn't established as quickly as before. And when on the move, it doesn't follow as smoothly as before. So it basically takes time to re-establish locatino all the time.
For the first point, I went through my list of apps that use Location services. And one-by-ony I've switched off all of the apps that were set to 'always'.
For me it was the app TripAdvisor that was causing the GPS to be active all the time. After setting this app from 'Always' to 'when in use' my problem was fixed.
But now I'm still stuck with the issue of slow / inaccurate location!

  • How can I tell if my iPad's GPS is even attemping to get a position fix?

    MC773LL/A  iOS 7.0.4
The main reason I purchased an iPad was to use it as backup for GPS navigation electronics aboard my boat. I've used it several times just to test it, with purchased nav apps, starting from my home port, and everything worked as expected. Recently I didn't power up the iPad until I was at sea but only 15 miles from home port. It could not seem to obtain a position fix, and the GPS arrow indicator did not appear. I had no way of knowing if it was even trying to get a fix. My other GPS devices at least tell me they're trying. Is there some way know if an iPad is even trying to get a first fix? When I returned home, I powered up the iPad and everything worked fine. All the location services settings and others, including wi-fi, were left untouched.
Is there some trick to wake up the iPad's on-board GPS to get it working?
And how would I know that it's activated and trying to get a first fix?
    Thanks.

My iPad has onboard true GPS. It's Model MC773LL/A
The app is iNavX.  The GPS and the app usually work just fine. But, as noted in my original posting, I had an incident where the GPS did not seem to activate. And I could not tell if there was some way to see if it was even trying to get a position fix. The GPS arrow didn't appear. More details in my original posting. My questions remain:
Is there some trick to wake up the iPad's on-board GPS to get it working?
And how would I know that it's activated and trying to get a first fix?

  • IPhone 4.0 GPS and camera

    Hi,
I have two questions about the iPhone 4.0. I would like to get input from users.
    1 - GPS
I read that the iPhone 4.0 has the same GPS chip than the iPad. Is it a stand alone GPS? I mean... if I have no phone data link and no Wi-Fi, can I still use the GPS? Or is it like older models where it uses triangulation with the 3G?
    2 - Camera
Ok, there is a flash on the iPhone 4.0 for photography. My question is the following: can you change the aperture or shutter speed with the built-in application for taking photos or a third-party app?
    Thanks.

    Yes, really.
The iPhone includes a dedicated GPS receiver - always has, and also uses A-GPS or assisted GPS. The assisted part via cell tower location or wi-fi helps to speed up the initial GPS acquisition only.
When you use a GPS system and you turn it on, it needs to find orbit and clock data for the relevant satellites, this in turn results in what is called TTFF, or Time To First Fix—how long before you get your location pinpointed. This initial TTFF is often called a “cold start” and on SiRF III systems (the latest GPS systems available), it can take anywhere from 30 seconds to a couple of minutes to acquire a signal. That time is dependent on your location, amount of interference and horizon information: open fields are faster than canyons or urban environments where buildings can interfere with the satellite-receiver line of site.
But when you use assisted GPS this whole process is much faster. Very often cellular network towers have GPS receivers (or a base station nearby) and those receivers are constantly pulling down satellite information and computing the data. This data is then passed on to the cellular phone (when requested) and acts like a “cheat” since the relevant satellites to your location are already identified and all that GPS computations is handled by 3rd party computers.
Maps data is not stored locally with the Maps app included with the iPhone. An internet connection is required to download the maps data for a particular location. If you don't have cellular service, the GPS radio will work but the initial acquisition will take longer and unless you are using a GPS app with maps data stored locally on the iPhone, you won't have maps data available.

  • My iPhone 5 does not get GPS signal

    Good day,
I noticed with my iPhone 5 that the map directions never seem to work.  Then I noticed my Nike+ app GPS signal always shows as weak and it doesn't work.  I never had the problem with my iPhone 4S so I thought maybe the new iOS.  I took my old 4S in it's case (now my wifes phone) and started the Nike+ on it and on my iPhone 5 (no case) sitting next to each other.  The 4S got a strong GPS signal. The 5 got nothing...
Has anyone out there experienced the same thing?  I'm trying to determine if this a global 5 thing or just my phone.
    Thanks all for your replies.

For the record - After calling support and running some diags I took the iPhone 5 into an Apple store.  The phone was replaced and all is good.  So this turns out to be a hardware issue, not an app or software issue.
    Thank you,
    Bud

  • Get GPS location from the command line

Is there a utility to get the current GPS location from the command line?  A quick search says `geo` will do it, but that appears to come with the android dev tools, which I'd rather not install right now.  The reason I want to do this is to avoid hard-coding my coordinates in a call to `redshift`.

    enduser wrote:
    Hmm.. `gpspipe` gives me:
gpspipe: could not connect to gpsd localhost:2947, Unknown error -6(-6)
    And `gpsd` gives me:
gpsd:ERROR: can't run with neither control socket nor devices
Do I need to be root for these applications? Alternatively, could I maybe just grab the timezone from /etc/localtime and use that? (though I guess that doesn't get close enough on longitude...)
You have to start gpsd from systemctl.  And you can plug/unplug gps devices at will, so it can be enabled in systemctl whether or not an actual gps is always available.

  • JComboBox: Can I have the arrow to show up in non-editing mode ?

    Hi,
I have a JComboBox in a JTable. The JComboBox is not editable. If I'm selecting from the popup, the Popup shows a nice little arrow on the right. If I'm not selecting (e.g. I'm in another cell or another component has focus), the arrow doesn't show.
I don't care, but the users get picky sometimes. They want to see the arrow ALWAYS.
    Thanks

  • Why are my location services always on

I have an issue with my location services in ios5 with my Iphone 4.
There is a purple arrow always on for the Seeting Time Zone option (even when in airplane mode).
It seems to affect the battery even with the recent upgrade.
If I turn this option off, then over night my clock is set one hour later than the correct time.
Please let me know if any of you have similar issues, and if you have any solutions!
    Thanks.

Yes but then as I stated, my clock goes off by at least one hour (usually in the middle of the night leaving me to depend on an old alarm clock). To fix this, I then would have to do a manual set up for the date and time, and then it really starts to feel like a dumb phone rather than a smart phone. Surely, this is a bug that needs to be addressed?
