IOS8 iPhone Personal Hotspot questions

I have some questions about the Personal Hotspot feature of my iPhone.  I have set it up and have it operational, but there are some quirks that I can find answers to.
1.  How do I tell what device is using my personal hotspot when it is on WiFi?  All I can see is the banner that says there is a connection.
2.  When I have the personal hotspot feature turned off in settings, and another device that has previously used the hotspot connects to it from their wifi settings, that turns on the hotspot on my iPhone.  How do I prevent that?  And How do I remove previously connected hotspots from the client iPhone wifi personal hotspot list?

  • HT4628 connecting to iphone personal hotspot

I was able to connect to my iPhone personal hotspot via wi-fi.  Now I can only connect via USB cable to my iPhone.  Any thoughts?

I have an update to this problem.
If I first connect to the iPhone's network using my iPad then subsequently connect my MBA to the network (I did this whilst the iPad was still connected to the iPhone), browsing works!
If I then disconnect both devices and reconnect just the MBA, I am back to square one - browsing doesn't work.
I have now posted this question in the Lion community too as I'm starting to think that this is more of a software issue.

Maybe you are looking to re-purpose this equipment versus getting rid of it if so, the best thing to do is search the internet for tutorials.  And I say this because it's what I would do, there are a lot of tutorials online.    Hope you can find good use for them.  Worse case scenario if you can't find something right now, package them very nicely and when you come across something unbox and enjoy.  I've re-purposed a mac color classic and LOVE IT!!

    1. Download the Latest iTunes Version & Install It
    2. Now Un-Install Apple Application Support and Apple Mobile Device Support in your Programs
    3. Now Extract the Itunes Setup file (E.g: iTunes64Setup.exe) using 7-zip
    4. Install AppleApplicationSupport.msi (must be installed before AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi)
    5. Install AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (do not change the installation directory)
    6. Restart the Computer
    7. Reset Network Settings in your iPhone (Settings>General>Reset)
    8. Now Connect to Computer using USB or Wi-Fi. It Must be Work now! If not Just Reset All Settings in your iPhone. Now It will Work

same case for my iphone 4 GSM (Hong Kong), my personal hotspot works at ios 7.0.4 but fails at 7.1 as APN cannot be set as described above. Hope Apple Support can help. My Carrier is PCCW-HKT (Hong Kong), which is not a registered carrier

  • Can I use my iPhone personal hotspot with my PC?

Can I use my iPhone personal hotspot with my PC?

Turn on Personal Hotspot on your iPhone, and then look for your iPhone's name in your computer's Wifi network list and connect to it.
It works essentially the same as a regular wifi network.

  • When connecting ipad to iPhones personal hotspot via wifi it is showin up as 2 connections when only 1 device is connected. Is someone hacking my phone?

When connecting ipad to my iPhones personal hotspot via wifi it is showin up as 2 connections when only 1 device is connected. Is someone hacking my phone? I only figured out I had a problem when my partner did the exact same set up and it showed up as only 1 device connected. I have changed the password and turned it off/on and etc. the really weird thing is now when my ipad is turned off and I turn my iphone personal hotspot on it shows up with 1 connection (when I don't have anything connected) for about 5 secs and then goes off and then 1 device connected for about 5 secs and then back off. This just keeps going on and off. What is going on. Could my phone have a bug or be hacked. Please help as it is kinda freaking me out. Thanks.

    Hello asrt17,
This may occur if your iPhone is connected to your computer via USB, as it will automatically share the connection via USB.
    iOS: Troubleshooting Personal Hotspot
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2756
When Personal Hotspot is enabled, your iOS device automatically shares your Internet connection with your computer when connected using USB.
Example: When you connect iPhone to your computer to charge or sync with iTunes. To avoid unnecessary data charges, turn off Personal Hotspot when not in use.
    Cheers,
    Allen

  • IPhone Personal Hotspot Privacy

Personal Hotspot Privacy (or How Does One Really Turn This Off?)
    Hi:
On my iPhone 6, under Settings>Personal Hotspot, this option is turned “Off”.
Yet on my iPad, under Settings>Wi-Fi, under the “Personal Hotspots” category, I see my iPhone 6 listed as an option.
What does this mean? Even if no one else can connect to this hotspot since a password is required, it bothers me that this information is being broadcast for others to see. Is there any way I can truly turn this hotspot off so that my name is not broadcast to anyone near?
    Any advice/explanation would be appreciated.
    Thank you!
PS iOS 8.1.2 on both devices

    Hi CharPatton,
If you are seeing this on two iOS devices that are both running iOS 8 and are both set up using your Apple ID, the information in question is most likely not being broadcast over the air from your iPhone (unless you are also seeing it on unrelated devices). Rather, this is most likely a function of the Instant Hotspot feature of Continuity under iOS 8, which allows for easy cellular data connection sharing to devices on the same account:
Connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac using Continuity - Apple Support
System requirements for Continuity on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac - Apple Support

  • Cannot Browse when Connected to iPhone Personal Hotspot

    Hi there
I don't know for certain that the two events are linked but since I updated Lion on my 11" MBA to 10.7.2 and my iPhone 3GS to iOS 5, I cannot browse the web on my MBA using the iPhone as a personal hotspot (cellular data).
I am connecting to my iPhone's network via Bluetooth.  The network provider is O2 and I have a contract which permits tethering.
The Bluetooth network connection appears to complete successfully (see below) but when I try to browse the web, nothing loads.
FWIW, Chrome eventually returns a DNS lookup failure (see below).  Safari just hangs whilst trying to load the requested page - I haven't waited for it to time out (assuming it does).
I have no such problems browsing the web (or downloading emails) on my iPad (1st gen; also running iOS 5) when it is tethered to my iPhone in the same way, the MBA/iPhone connection worked before the updates and browsing is fine when the MBA connected to the 'net via wi-fi.
Any ideas as to how I can resolve this?
    John

  • Cannot Browse - iPhone Personal Hotspot via BT

    Hi
I've already posted this question in the MBA community as I wasn't sure if this is a hardware or software issue but some additional testing has me thinking it's the latter.
You can see the original post and all the gory details here but essentially I am having problems browsing the web when I connect to my iPhone 3GS' personal hotspot via Bluetooth.
Somewhat coincidentally, the issues only started happening since I updated the respective OSs to 10.7.2 (from 10.7.1) and 5 respectively - before then I had no problems using my MBA with my iPhone.
Using my 1st gen iPad to make the same connection works perfectly and oddly enough if I connect the MBA to the iPhone's network having first connected the iPad (whilst the iPad is still connectied), I can browse fine on the MBA.
Disconnecting the iPad from the network I can still browse OK but when I disconnect and reconnect just the MBA, I am back to the original problem and cannot browse.
FYI, browsing on the MBA via wi-fi works OK.

    Thanks again for replying.
It is connected - see screen shot below.  Just to be clear, the problem is that I am unable browse the web whilst my MBA is connected to my iPhone's network via BT.

  • IPad2 connection to iPhone Personal Hotspot

I have the iPhone4 that i got specifically to connect my iPad the Personal Hotspot feature. But the connection is not stable. As long as i am using my iPad, i don't notice any problems, but if the iPad is not used, when i go back, the connection to the Personal Hotspot is lost, and it takes a restart of the feature on the iPhone before the iPad can discover the WiFi.  Bluetooth connection is better, but still drops and requires restarting/reconnecting the iPad before it can be used.  This is not caused by going out of range of the iPhone WiFi, as i carry the iPad with me the whole time.
An annoyance more than anything.  When connected to a "normal" wireless router, such as in my home, never see this problem.

  • Use iPhone personal hotspot to connect my iPad with my laptop

I am living in school residence so I don't have a wireless connection, nor am I allowed to use a router on the school internet.
I have an iPhone with data plan and personal hotspot. I want to watch movies on my iPad, streaming from my laptop, using some apps like VLC Streamer.
So my questions are, can I set up a network using my iPhone, and have both my laptop and iPad connect to my personal hotspot? Will that allow me to use VLC Streamer? And will my mobile carrier charge me for the data between my laptop and iPad, which should be considered a local connection?
    Thanks a million!

    Please help me!!!

  • How do i connect my windows vista laptop to iPhone personal hotspot? Will it still work if my laptop doesnt have iTunes installed?

I am currently using iPhone 4 and windows vista laptop. i cant seem to get my windows vista laptop to connect to the personal hotspot on my iPhone using USB. Is it because iTunes is not installed in my windows vista laptop?
I have tried it on a MacBook Pro and it works perfectly fine.

when you switch your hotspot on your phone you will see a user password - when you switch your laptop on and search for your iphone connect and you will be asked for the user password once you enter it and click connect you will link the two devices and they will work together as long as you have a good signal and good data allowance you shouldn't have any issues

  • IPhone personal hotspot

Anyone know if I can connect the Apple TV to the Personal Hotspot network created by my iPhone?
And if I can use the network to stream photos, audio and movies from the iPad to the Apple TV using Airplay?
I see that when I connect my iPad to the network, then the symbol in the menu bar is a couple of interlocked rings, not the usual WiFi fan... what does this mean?

I would say in theory the AppleTV should be able to connect to an iPhone hotspot but I've never tried, so can't say in practice.  I've used a 'mi-fi' device with AppleTv and iPad linked but if you're not in an area (eg remote campsite) where the internet is accessible, DRM protected content will not play to AppleTV as authorisation is required via the internet, and it's a right pain in the neck.
Even if phone internet bandwidth was poor this might be a good way to use AppleTV 'on the go' with the phone behaving as a portable router however.
Clearly if you wanted to use rentals/internet features on AppleTV you would need pretty good bandwidth on the phone and a decent data plan.
