IP address 192.168.1.255 active every 30 seconds - why?

The IP address 192.168.1.255 is active every 30 seconds - why? I use Virus Barrier and also Little Snitch to monitor network receiving and sending activity... Since I began this process I've been baffled by the fact that this particular IP address, 192.168.1.255, is so active - about every 30 seconds the Little Snitch window shows sending and receiving activity after the the line "cupsd." I assume it's harmless - but since I can't seem to determine why this is happening, I can't be 100% sure... I hoping someone familiar with this network issue can explain why this is happening. Thanks very much.

Hi there,
An IP address starting with 192.168 always is associated with a router. To have items being sent to and from it is therefore normal.
Nothing to worry about.

  • Why is cupsd 192.168.1.255 so active on my mac?

Why is cupsd 192.168.1.255 so active on my mac? Using Little Snitch network monitor I see it listed a few times per minute or so - from what I have read (Googled the IP after I first noticed it)... it's apparently connected to a print search of some sort - Is this a private IP address? and again, why could or should it be activating so often? Thanks everyone!

  • What configures en0 with IP address 192.168.2.1 ?

Recently, I realized that (only) "en0" has two IP addresses configured, but I configured only one from System Preferences.
The output of "ifconfig en0" looks as follows:
    en0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
    inet 192.168.2.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.2.255
    inet 192.168.100.4 netmask 0xfffffff0 broadcast 192.168.100.15
    ether 00:23:32:30:6c:cc
media: autoselect (1000baseT <full-duplex,flow-control>) status: active
    supported media: autoselect 10baseT/UTP <half-duplex> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex,hw-loopback> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex,flow-control> 100baseTX <half-duplex> 100baseTX <full-duplex> 100baseTX <full-duplex,hw-loopback> 100baseTX <full-duplex,flow-control> 1000baseT <full-duplex> 1000baseT <full-duplex,hw-loopback> 1000baseT <full-duplex,flow-control>
Also removing the entry with "sudo ifconfig en0 -alias" only works until the system has been restarted at which point it is mystically restored.
My computer has the following network connections:
    = en0 ......... (Ethernet 1; connected to local router)
    = en1 ......... (Ethernet 2; not connected)
= en2 ......... (AirPort; connected to AirPort Express base station and Internet)
    = en3 ......... (Parallels shared network adapter)
    = en4 ......... (Parallels host-only network adapter)
    = vmnet1 ... (vmWare virtual network adapter)
    = vmnet8 ... (vmWare virtual network adapter)
While both routers do provide IP addresses via DHCP for guests all my own IP addresses are manually set.
Does someone know how to remove the "192.168.2.1" entry for good?

I understand that any IP device needs a proper address to be able to be... well... addressed. Thing is that there is already an IP address ("192.168.100.4"), which would be possible to be used for this purpose. That is where I started to wonder.
Because System Preferences -> Sharing -> Internet Sharing tells the Mac to act as a router, and the 192.168.100.* subnet already has a router. They would fight. So en0 needs a new IP address in its own subnet.
Mac OS X, as shipped, does not have a WiFi to ethernet bridge mode.
You can buy a WiFi base station and configure it for bridge mode (turn off NAT and DHCP services) which will then allow you to extend the existing subnet.

  • Problem with my linksys WRT120N i can't connect to the address 192.168.1.1

    Hello friends
i need help cuz i can't connect to the address 192.168.1.1
i didn't change the address 192.168.1.1 to an other address but i can't connect to this last i want to change my options
    i really need help plz

Make sure that the computer is connected to the router on the Ethernet port..Now,check the ip address on the computer....Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt...A black box will appear(Command Prompt)...In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...
IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 (assuming your router is 192.168.1.1)...
If you get the above mentioned IP Address, Subnet and Gateway Address then you should ping the Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...If it gives you request timed out then disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer...
If you get 4 replies then,Adjust the Browser Settings on the computer....Open an IE, click Tools >> Internet Options, then delete all files, cookies, history, forms...Goto "Connections", make sure Never Dial a Connection is checked, click on LAN Settings and make sure all the options are unchecked...Once you are done click on O.k...Close the IE and re-open it...

  • On Lil Snitch says scanner is 192.168.1.255

I'm on a wireless network via Airport Extreme with OSX 10.6.8 and Mac Pro OSX 10.7.5.  I recently hooked up a wireless Printer, HP6700 Officejet all in one.
I noticed on Lil Snitch says scanner is 192.168.1.255 What does that mean?

The x.x.x.255 address should be reserved and not used by any devices. I don't put much trust in that program you are using. It seems to cause more problems then it finds.

I think the error is indicated in TUXLOG file "ERROR: Jolt client (ip address 192.168.196.102) does not have proper application password". The application password "myname" in Browser http://192.168.196.102:8000/ps/signon.html page is not working. I use the same password "myname" to login Data Mover Bootstrap mode, Application Designer, and Application Server psadmin configuration successfully. I have tried a few other passwords in Browser http://192.168.196.102:8000/ps/signon.html page but not working.
    My question is:
How to solve Sign In issue on http://192.168.196.102:8000/ps/signon.html that is "ERROR: Jolt client (ip address 192.168.196.102) does not have proper application password" ?
    Thanks.

    Dear Nicolas,
Hello. I have used the same password for "DomainConnectPswd" in the file Configuration.properties with that for Application Server setting. Eventually, UserID PSADMIN sign in http://192.168.196.102:8000/ps/signon.html successfully. PeopleTools 8.53 runs correctly in Browser.
It seems that whether upgrade Oracle Linux 5.0 to the latest 5.10 does not have effect !
I am very grateful to your great help for this installation of PT8.53 with Linux and Oracle Database !

how to edit xml file particular value. and how to send xml file over ip address 192.168.2.10 device using ftp through Ethernet

    Hello
For using FTP function in LabVIEW, I recommend you to check this document: FTP Basics
Also, take a look at FTP Browser.vi, which is available at the Example Finder.
To edit a XML file, try to use VIs in XML palette. Maybe Write to XML.vi helps you.
Post your current VI if possible.

  • I have problems with my 7510 holding a wireless network ip address 192.168 etc It says 169. etc

My HP Photosmart all in one (which is only a few months old) stopped comunicating with my Netgear DGN1000 Adsl router a few days before Xmas.
Instead of the 192.168.0.9 ip address that it used before I powered off the router, iit came back with an address of 169.254.249.128; "Configuration source" = "Auto ip"; a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0; and Default gateway of 0.0.0.0; I know these are wrong, so I tried a fixed ip address of 192.168.0.201, a SM of 255.255.255.0; and a DG of 192.168.0.1; This was OK, but overnight, it all went back to the auto ip settings.
I eventually managed to contact HP, and the guy spent 75 minutes with me trying to reset things, and eventually he reckoned that the Netgear router was not allowing the printer access via some ports (which he emailed me a list of) and something he said I needed to tell my isp (Virgin media) “FLOOD DETECTION SET TO OFF” & “SP1 FIREWALL SET TO OFF”
On contacting VM, they were insistant that their router was not at fault - they could open the 12 or so ports, at a cost to me of £60! (I declined this)
HP had told me how to set up for Ad Hoc printing (by-passing the router) which had worked during our testing.
VM had been into my settings for the router, via a remote access device, and checked a few settings, but the only one I saw them alter was changing from CH10 to CH11.
I certainly could not get the printer to accept the 192.168.1.201 after this anyway.
Following this, I reset the printers Network Defaults, and reconfigured the wireless settings. It did seem OK, and running on 192.168.0.9
    I have now reset the IP address to Manual on the printer, entering the 192.168.0.9 and 255.255.255.0; and 192.168.0.1;
Touch wood it has held up for a few days, but I havn't switched anything off (but overnight before it went awry!)
I'm not convinced I have got a fix here, and would welcome any suggestions as to what I can still do.
Maybe I have already done some, as I have "completely uninstalled, and reinstalled the HP7510 software on my Desktop PC.
Incidently the printer is set up on 3 PC's in the house - a desktop running W7 HP 64 bit, a Notebook (same OS variant) and a Laptop running W7 HP, but 32 bit.
All were unable to print when I was having issues.
I would welcome any suggestions to get a more permanat fix. (I would rather have found a definite fault) I have other routers I could try, or I could open ports, but my question is - If I needed these ports open, and other settings altered (Flood detection etc) why did the printer work for the first few weeks I had it set up, and why did powering off the router cause such issues? (suppose I need to power off the router again in the future - it does happen)
    Thanks
    Dave
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hey Dave,
    Great post with good information.
As you mentioned, the printer came back with a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx style IP address. This is normally produced when the device is not able to get a complete connection with the router, thus the router gives it a temporary internal IP address.
The normal suggestion when a printer stops maintaining a connection is to set a Static IP. This is done by using the manual IP feature you mentioned using. This locks the device to those network settings and even when the network is restarted the information is retained. This should be the fix to the issue.
    Hope this helps.

  • Famous IP Address 192.168.1.X

    hi mates :)
there are two IP addresses I see wherever I look:
    192.168.1.x (Class C)
    172.16.x.x (Class B)
Is there a specific reason makes those addresses special? (Like they are not used as public internet address)
    tx in advance for helping

    Hi ,
    Private Address Space
The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has reserved the following three blocks of IP address space for private networks:
    10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
    172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
    192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
The first block is a single class A network number, the second block is a set of 16 contiguous class B network numbers, and the third block is a set of 255 contiguous class C network numbers.
If you decide to use private address space, you don't need to coordinate with IANA or an Internet registry. Addresses within this private address space will only be unique within your network. Remember, if you need globally unique address space, you must obtain addresses from an Internet registry.
In order to use private address space, determine which hosts do not need to have network layer connectivity to the outside. These hosts are private hosts, and use private address space. Private hosts can communicate with all other hosts within the network, both public and private, but they cannot have IP connectivity to any external host. Private hosts can still have access to external services via application layer relays.
All other hosts are public and use globally unique address space assigned by an Internet registry. Public hosts can communicate with other hosts within the network, and can have IP connectivity to external public hosts. Public hosts do not have connectivity to private hosts of other networks.
Because private addresses have no global meaning, routing information about private networks is not propagated on outside links, and packets with private source or destination addresses should not be forwarded across such links. Routers in networks that do not use private address space, especially those of Internet service providers, should be configured to reject (filter out) routing information about private networks. This rejection should not be treated as a routing protocol error.
Indirect references to such addresses (like DNS Resource Records) should be contained within the network. Internet service providers should take measures to prevent such leakage.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Private Address Space
The obvious advantage of using private address space for the Internet at large is to conserve the globally unique address space. Using private address space also gives you greater flexibility in network design, since you will have more address space available than you could get from the globally unique pool.
The primary disadvantage of using private address space is that you have to renumber your IP addresses if you want to connect to the Internet.

Other devices: MacBook Pro defaults to 192.168.2.100 and won't connect. Says it is using DHCP and also says that the router address is 192.168.2.1. I try renewing the DHCP lease and same thing keeps happening. What might I check or change that will ensure I can have a good, consistent wireless connection to this router/modem combination.
    Thanks for any help!

The Linksys router is connected to the embarq 660 modem at the 'internet' port  on the back of the router and to the 'ethernet' port on the back of the modem. The Mac G5 is plugged into one of the numbered ports on the back of the router. Nothing else is connected to the router. The MacBook Pro is a laptop I'm trying to connect wirelessly. I have the modem connected to the wall jack (the DSL connection) and to the router as described already.  I don't think there's anything wrong with the wiring.

  • Can't access three routers through 192.168.1.1, Not address of router. HELP?

Long story here, and I am baffled...
My parents were initially connected to a broadband connection through a wired BEFSX41 router.  After moving the computers to another room had major connectivity issues.  Tried to access router through 192.168.1.1 and could not.  Ran ipconfig and found address to be 76.180.104.1.  Tried reset, power cycles, release and renew, could not get it to go back to 192.168.1.1.  Brought a WRT54G I had over,  had normal results for a brief period(10 seconds tops) then again, same ip address and connectivity issues.  After this I brought both routers home, connected them to my laptop, but not my network, inspected the configurations and updated firmware, with no issues.  So to narrow down issues I brought the WRT54G to my sisters house.  She runs a WRT160N.  Before changing anything I accessed 160N through webpage, checked settings and verified ip through ipconfig to be 192.168.1.1.  All ok.  Replaced her 160N with 54G and had wrong ip address again, also 76.180.104.1, so I decided router was somehow damaged/corrupted.  This is where this story turns really crappy for me.  When I reconnected the 160N,  the ip address was 192.168.1.1 for 15 seconds, then in ipconfig two ip addresses were shown suddenly.  They were 76.180.96.1 and 192.168.1.1.  Ran ipconfig again and got only 76.180.96.1, and now I can no longer access router.
My sister talked to a knowledgeable guy she knows before I hooked it to her computer and he surmised a Google redirect virus which I did sign on to.  But now it seems the 54G router has transferred this virus/issue to my sisters computer, which then uploaded it to her 160N.  Judging by the time delay when initially connecting 54G, I think maybe this virus is somehow corrupting routers?  Does this sound possible to anyone?  And if so, what are my options to save the routers, and not have to re-image computer drives?  Anyone with any knowledge, please help, cause the idea of having to re-image three computers is killing me.  Also I did not leave any of the routers with the original password.  Thank you in advance for your help.

Good. The symptoms you saw (computer gets public IP address) is most commonly because you connect one of the LAN ports of the router to your modem. That way the computer can talk directly to the modem and gets a public IP address.
Sometimes this can happen if the router crashes and won't boot up (often power light is blinking). In that case, the switch in the router won't separate the internet port from the LAN port again giving computers direct access to the modem.

  • VPN Router to Router with 192.168.1.1 WAN address

I have two WRVS4400N routers I'd like to create a VPN tunnel for.
One gets a WAN IPAddress totally external: 75.32.167.xxx from the DSL modem.
The other one is connected to an ADRAN 676 modem.
This modem has an external IP address (67.155.29.202), but assigns address 192.168.1.1 to the connection to the router.
I have the router configured to assign addresses 192.168.0.xxx to all computers on the LAN.
The VPN setup requires to define the WAN address as the external address, but my router only sees address 192.168.1.1 as the external address (coming from the ADRAN modem)
I hope this is not too convoluted and someone can help me. Following is an attempt at illustrating my setup:
    10.10.10.1-->Router1--->75.32.167.147 ---->INTERNET--->
    INTERNET-->67.155.29.202--->ADRAN modem--->192.168.1.1-->ROUTER2--->192.168.0.1
    Thanks in advance
    Rodolfo

You adran modem also operates as NAT router. You have to reconfigure the adran modem for bridge mode. In bridge mode the modem operates like any other simple modem. You then have to configure the router for your internet connection, e.g. use PPPoE with the username and password supplied by your ISP. With that your router will have the public IP address.
Otherwise, you would have to configure port forwarding and IPSec or GRE forwarding on the adran to pass the VPN traffic to the router. However, this may not work at all if the router is not able to handle VPN traffic through your NAT adran modem/router (my guess is it won't do it but I have not tested this).

  • Cannot access 192.168.1.1

I have tried on my wireless and wired computers. I still can't get access. "timed out" message.
Note the following. I did upgrade the Firmware not too long ago. I can surf the internet on both computers. I have a WRT54G Router.
    Here is my ipconfig information:
    Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix : domain_not_set.invalid
    IP address : 192.168.1.100
    Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1
If you need more info, please let me know.
Note also that when I disable my firewalls, I still get the same "timed out" message. Also note that when I upgraded the firmware, I don't remember resetting the router, if that has anything to do with it..Thanks!Message Edited by Volodya on 02-06-200706:12 AM

Some times a hard reset will fix this problem.  Have you tried pressing and holding the reset button for 30 seconds?  I know Linksys documentation says 10 seconds but 30 seems more the norm.

  • How to find Default Subnet mask for 192.168.10.7/10?

    Hi,
I am studying for CCNA and right now going through Subnetting section. Came across this question : What is the default subnet mask for ip address 192.168.10.7 / 10? If my requirement is to connect 1000 hosts then how many subnets, hosts per subnet and host range can i get using this?
Using 10 mask bits, we get dsm as 255.192.0.0. but  192.168.10.7 is class c address then how can we hav 10 mask bits?
    Thanx
    Mahima

    hello Ganesh
    u
are making me confused. A /10 cidr means i have 2 subnet bits which
give 2^2 = 4 networks and remainings bits are the host bits (22) which
definitely give more than 1000 hosts. According to Todd calculation,
there will be four network, 64 will be the block size so we will hav
    four network of 192.0.0.0 , 192.64.0.0 , 192.128.0.0 , 192.192.0.0
    .Isn't it?
How u arrived at 64 networks?
    thanx
    mahima
    Hello Mahima,
You are right 64 will be the block size and following will be the subnetting for 192.168.10.7/10
    192.168.10.7/10
    current network 192.128.0.0 mask 255.192.0.0
current host range 192.128.0.1 to 198.191.255.254
    Next subnet will be 192.192.0.0/10
current host range 192.192.0.1 to 192.255.255.254
And following will be the subnet
