Ip address but no internet

Hello
New MacBook connects flawlessly to internet on my wireless home network.
When user tries to connect at home she can connect to the network either via airport or ethernet. There is a dhcp assigned ip address and the router correctly identified in both cases.
However, she still cannot connect to the internet, or get email. It all works at my place, and the network panel in System Preferences indicates that everything should be fine. Although she uses a NetGear wireless router her adsl2 modem is the same as mine but even via ethernet straight into that router she cannot connect to the internet.
I would really appreciate any pointers - trying to help her over the phone and not sure where to start!
Deb

Thank you to all of you who helped.
Yes, she has a static ip address and a dns entered in on the router - apparently someone else in the household logs in remotely to a work computer. I suggested that she contact the person that set up this secure connection so as not to interfere with anything important. The person did as you suggested - gave her new dns to enter and is going to fix whatever needs to be fixed in order to enable others to log on wirelessly without this situation arising again.
So thanks for all your input which enabled her to get so quickly to the root of the problem. She is up and running now.

  • Slate 21 Pro - Obtains IP address but no Internet connectivity

    Hi all,
I have a Slate 21 Pro with no internet connectivity at home.  The device obtains an IP address via DHCP on either wired or wireless networks, but when attempting to browse or access internet-based resources, it simply times out. I've also tried manual IP address assignment with no success. If I take the tablet to a local wi-fi cafe, it connects fine, but I can't get it to work at home. My ISP is Baja Broadband, a 50MB/5MB cable connection  Local network details below:
    * Arris T822G cable modem - ISP-provided, no routing or firewall capability, just a plain old modem
    * Cisco/Linksys E3000 wi-fi router - internal network gets NAT'ed here. no filtering, nothing fancy
    * Netgear 24-port managed gigabit switch
I've tried bypassing the internal network and connecting the Slate 21 Pro directly to the cable modem via wired Ethernet. Same problem - it obtains an IP address (a public IP in this case) but will not connect to any internet sites. HP sent me a replacement unit which displays the exact same problem. Both units work fine at the wi-fi cafe.
(OS is Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. I could take the unit to the wi-fi cafe and see if there's any OTA updates available if anyone thinks that might help.)
I'm a network engineer with 25 years IT experience. My home network is a mature network with no known problems. Connected to this network and functioning perfectly are: 2 iPhones, a Roku box, an LG smart TV, 2 Macs, 4 Windows PCs. Previously had 2 HP Touch tablets which were also fine. Home visitors are able to connect their phones and tablets to our wi-fi with no problems. It's *just* the Slate 21 Pro which is misbehaving.
    I'm stumped. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Steve

UPDATE: This is resolved. I discovered I was able to access Internet sites by IP address but not by hostname. There was something wonky with the ISP-provided DNS server. Once I substituted a different DNS server in the IP config, it works.
    Weird!

  • Airport Express gives out strong signal and IP address, but no Internet

I'm trying to solve an Airport problem for a friend who has an Airport Extreme (802.11g) and an Airport Express. The base station is connected to a cable modem. The Airport Express is used in WDS mode to extend the wireless network. There are two computers involved: a MacBook Pro and a Dell with Windows XP. The Airport Express is needed to extend the signal into the room where the Dell is located.
It had been working fine but stopped working and went into "flashing orange light" mode. I tried hard reset but that didn't help; I had to reset it to factory defaults to get it to even respond to the Airport utility.
After the reset, and after reconfiguring the Airport Express, the Airport Express cannot provide Internet access wirelessly. Here are the specific symptoms:
    (a) Computers in the vicinity of the base station (both my friend's MacBook Pro and my own MacBook) can get wireless internet access
    (b) The Dell detects a strong signal from the Airport Express (which is only about two feet away from the Dell's USB WiFi adapter) and gets an IP address from it, but no Internet access
    (c) My own MacBook, when next to the Dell PC, also detects a strong signal from the Airport Express, but also cannot connect to the Internet
    (d) If I connect my MacBook to the Airport Express with an ethernet cable, I can access the Internet
I have tried both with and without wireless encryption and it makes no difference: no wireless Internet access from the Airport Express.
Is this a configuration issue or is it a hardware problem with the Airport Express?

You are going to have to give us more information. How were your iMac and iPhones getting internet access before the AirPort Express? How was your equipment wired up before, and how is it wired up now?

  • MacBook Pro connects with an IP address, but no internet connection to any apps.

I have tried everything I could think of and read about and am still having the same issues. I access a public wifi hotspot for my internet, but all of my other devices (iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Samsung tablet) work just fine.
I have tried all of these troubleshooting tips:
    - removing wifi connection in system pref and readding
    - removing system config folder and restarting Mac
    - removing wireless network from keychain and system pref
    - connected to phone hotspot and other wifi connections wits same results
    - verified and repaired disk permissions
I cant think of anything else to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Gateway - Distributes correct internal IP addresses, but internet fails

It's very frustrating - I've spent all afternoon but no progress.
A DSL modem in bridge mode correctly assigns my server with my static WAN IP address. The internet works fine on the server - I can browse the web and perform updates to OS X Server. OK so far...
I then ran the 'Gateway Setup Utility' to set up Internet sharing for me:
My WAN port is en0, my LAN is en3 (just an iBook connected to en3 for testing purposes). The utility successfully starts DHCP, NAT, ipfw and DNS. en3 routes traffic from 192.168.3.1 and the iBook is successfully assigned 192.168.3.2 via DHCP.
This is what puzzles me - everything seems to work, but when I open a browser on the iBook it can never load a webpage. I ran network diagnostics and it says my internet connection is working correctly!
PS - I've tried stopping ipfw but no change. I've also made no alterations to the DNS; I assume the DNS information propogates from my ISP. Could this be where I'm going wrong?
Any help would be VERY gratefully received!
    Thanks,
    Ed

Thank you for your suggestion Leif. I enabled logging of all blocked packets but it doesn't look like there were any requests blocked. When I disable the firewall completely the problem still remains. I also tried entering my ISP's DSN addresses directly into Network Preferences on the client iBook, but no luck with that either.

  • MacBook Pro displaying internet address but page won't load.

I restarted the computer and reset safari but it still continues.  I also deleted the cache.  It works at first when I turn it on for a couple addressed but then will freeze up again.  The web address displays but the page is white and won't load. Anyone else have this problem and know how to fix it?  A friend suggested updated to Lion OX.

Which Mac OS X do you have installed and which version Safari ??
Try turning the router off for a few minutes, then turn it back on, restart your Mac, try Safari.
If you have Little Snitch installed, that can prevent pages from loading.
If you have anti virus software installed, disable that.
And turn off the Firewall in System Preferences > Security
Upgrading to a newer OS does not guarantee that it will provide a fix for browser issues.

  • The wi-fi on my ipod touch is connected but the internett is not working! Help

Soo annoying, it's connected but the internett is not working. I don't know what to type in or what to do, so I need help.

Are you 100% positive you are connected?  Head to Settings - Wi-Fi and tap the > next to the network you are connected to?  What is listed for an IP address?  If it's in the 169.x.x.x range, it means your iPod did not properly receive a valid IP address via DHCP from your modem/router. So the 169.x.x.x address is a self-assigned one.
This can usually be resolved by a reboot of your router.  You can do this by unplugging it for about 30 seconds.  After it powers back up, try reconnecting it.  It wouldn't hurt to try a reset of your iPod as well.  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

  • I get wireless connection but my internet does not work on my ipad 2

I get wireless connection but my internet does not work on my ipad 2

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • IMac Keeps Wi-Fi but looses Internet

Can anyone help with this as it's driving me crazy. my new iMac keeps loosing it's Internet connection even though it remains connected to the Modem Router and reports great signal strength with the Wi-Fi signal.
    A Bit of Background Info
3 days ago I bought a new 27" iMac this is the 3.1GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 model and currently has 4GB of RAM which I'll be updating to 16GB in a couple fo days. This machine came pre-installed with Lion.
I bought this to replace my older iMac a 2006 model which is running Snow Leopard. I also have a MBP which is around 6 months old (I bought it just before Lion was released) and this also has Snow Leopard on it. On top of this I have an iPhone 4 and my wife has an iPhone 3G.
All of these computers and phones connect to my Wi-Fi network which uses a Belkin N300 Wireless Modem Router. This router itself is only about 3 weeks old and replaced a much older Netgear one that just failed one day.
When I was setting up the new iMac I used Migration Assistant to move accounts, documents, settings, everything from the old Snow Leopard iMac to the new Lion iMac.There were a few problems at first in doing this which may or may not be the cause of the problem I'm now experiencing. I'm going from memory here so I'm not 100% sure of the precise details but I'm pretty sure it went something like this:
    1. Turned on new iMac for the first time and was prompted to add it to my Wireless Network which I did.
    2. Connected a CAT5 cable between both Macs
    3. Ran Migration Assistant but it failed to detect the old iMac
    4. Disconnected the CAT5 cable and tried again, still failed to detect the old iMac
    5. Reconnected the CAT5 but ran Migration Assitant first on the old iMac before running it on the new one. The new iMac then found the old one and the transfer began.
    6. After an hour or so noticed that the transfer time was HUGE, like around 22hrs and realised that it must be trying to send it over Wi-Fi and not CAT5.
    7. Aborted the migration but then both iMacs completely crashed and had to be rebooted by holding down the power button.
    8. Rebooted new iMac but chose not to set-up Wi-Fi first and re-ran migration assistant with CAT5 cable attached. Transfer then worked taking around 3hrs.
    9. On completion got a report saying that two programs hadn't been copied because they weren't compatible with Lion but both of these were programs I had previously uninstalled on the old iMac and this message was just referring to left over folders that hadn't been deleted.
    10. Added the new iMac to my Wi-Fi network.
    The Problem
The Modem Router is in the same room as the iMac (and all the other computers and phones for that matter) and is around 3 meters away from it with just a TV in between them and as such the Wi-Fi signal strength is always very strong on the new iMac (and all devices). However several times a day the new iMac just stops being able to access the Internet yet it remains connected to the Wi-Fi network. This happens whether I'm using the Internet on the new iMac at that time like surfing the web or downloading files or if I've just left the iMac on but am not using it. The cure is always the same and that is to right click on the Wi-Fi signal icon at the top of the screen, select Turn Off Wi-Fi and then turn it back on again. The length of time that I have working Interent on the new iMac can be a few minutes or a few hours it just seems pretty random.
When I do loose the Internet on the new iMac all the other computers and phones can still access the Internet and if I can still log into the router ON the new iMac and the routers status shows that it is still connected to the Internet. So the new iMac is connected to the router via Wi-Fi, the router is connected to the Internet but for some reason the new iMac just isn't getting the Internet anymore but if I turn Wi-Fi off and back on again on the new iMac it starts working again!
    Things I've Tried
All the following are things I've tried without success.
    1. Reboot the new iMac
    2. Reboot the router
    3. Turned of Wi-Fi on the new iMac, deleted my network from it's preferred network list, deleted all Airport passwords from my Keychain
I did notice the first time I did this that I had two Airport passwords listed under both Login and System (possibly caused when I first added the new iMac to the network before the successful migration?) but I deleted all of them and when I connected the iMac back to the network I now have one listed under Login and one under System
    4. Added a new Network Location
    5. Turned off Firewall on the router
    6. Turned off Firewall on the iMac
    7. I tried to use a Manual IP address but could not get this to work at all. If I used "DHCP with manual IP address” in Network > Advanced > TCP/IP settings and entered the same IP address that was automatically assigned to the iMac, 192.168.2.7, then it wouldn't even connect to the router at all. Setting it back to auto would make things work again but obviously still resulting in the dropped Internet connection.
Have I got a dud iMac, is there something I've missed, something else I can try?

  • Airport Extreme, Network but No Internet

My Airport Extreme was working fine until our cable internet was interrupted overnight. Now I can get wired ethernet when connected directly to the cable modem, I can get a good ip, network and router address to the Airport, even a ping, but no internet to either my wired G5 or wireless MacBook. I've power cycled and fiddled with configurations. Ideas?

Most likely, your AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) is not getting an IP address from the cable modem.
Although you have tried power recycling, I suggest you give it another go as follows:
o Power-down the modem, AEBSn, and computer(s); wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-up the AEBSn; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    o Power-up the computer(s)
Your computer(s) should now be able to access the Internet through the AEBSn. Please post back your results.

  • Connect to network, but not internet

I have an iMac with 10.5.5 and a linksys wrt wireless router.
My connection status is "connected" but I can not access internet. It is a cable ISP.
I have tried changing config of router. I have also reset it to factory default.
I have tried setting up a new connection using "Assist me" and tried the "Diagnose"
But no luck yet. The only thing I have not tried is manually resetting router.
Monday (tomorrow) I will be trying again.
    Any ideas out there?
    Thanks

Once your mac appears to be connected to your network
try pinging an ip address of a website
open your terminal and issue the following command
    ping -c10 212.58.224.138
press enter and wait for a response.
    then try
    ping -c10 bbc.co.uk
    press enter.
if you get a response when pinging the IP address but no response to the domain name it shows that you have an internet connection but a dns issue.

  • Trying to connect airport extreme to comcast provided ubee modem. Light on airport green, but no internet access.

Attempting to connect ubee d3.0 comcast modem to airport extreme base station.
Light on airport will go green, but I cannot connect to the internet.
I'm sure it has something to do with DHCP/NAT - as the airport extreme is getting an IP address, but then assiging a 10.x.x.x IP to my computer
but attempts at putting it in bridge mode just causes the light to go yellow and give warning of "No DNS Server" and "No internet connection"
I am able to connect to the internet when I connected directly to the modem.
    I'm running OS 10.8.5
previously had DSL modem and connected after a few easy tweaks of the NAT settings before. am unsure what the issue is on this on... have used up my rather limited tech knowledge.
    any thoughts?
    Thank you!

Attempting to connect ubee d3.0 comcast modem to airport extreme base station.
Light on airport will go green, but I cannot connect to the internet.
Ubee provides both cable modems and gateway devices. What is the model number of yours?
I'm sure it has something to do with DHCP/NAT - as the airport extreme is getting an IP address, but then assiging a 10.x.x.x IP to my computer
By default, the AirPort Extreme would performing as a router with both NAT & DHCP enabled. Also, it would act as a DHCP server for the local network and provide out Private IP addresses in the range of 10.0.1.2 - 10.1.1.200. The WAN-side IP address of the Extreme should be a Public one and provided to you by your ISP via the Ubee modem. Did you perform a "factory default" reset on the Extreme before attempting to connect it to the modem?

    Sounds like this:
    Update Server
    Try:
    - Powering off and then back on your router.
    - iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
    - Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
    Public DNS — Google Developers
    OpenDNS IP Addresses
    - Try on another computer/network
    - Wait if it is an Apple problem
