IP Addressing and Network Preferences Question

I am conneted to the internet via Verizon DSL with an IP address of 69.160.xx.xx. This is connected to a Linksys 4-Port WRTG Wireless router which has the IP address of 192.168.1.1. Thus when setup the IP address in Network Preferences and Server Admin should I give the IP address as Verizon DSL address of 69.160.xx.xx or the 192.168.1.1 I configured on the Linksys router?

As long as the modem is up and stable, the Linksys can get the info for the WAN from it.
As far as your server is concerned, the edge of the world is the inside interface on the Linksys. The server just sends stuff to the Linksys and lets the Linksys deal with it.

  • Wifi Lost and Network Preferences Inaccessible after Resume from Sleep

    Macbook Pro,  shipped with Lion.
I've had a problem when Lion resumes from sleep of not being able to access any networks.  Specifically, the wifi symbol in the menu bar shows the pulsating waves, when clicked it reports that it is searching for networks, however it doesn't find the standard wireless network it is normally connected to at home, nor can I choose any further options in that dropdown menu.   Specifically, I cannot access Network Preferences, via any GUI based method (don't know enough CLI to know how).
Most alarming is that this has happened in a couple of different scenarios:
    1) normally putting the laptop to sleep if 2 different users are logged in via fast user switching
    2) if the computer shuts itself down from the sleep position because it has been unplugged for too long.
Restarting does revert everything back to normal, but I was hoping for a less drastic fix.  Sorry to gripe, but I'm especially disappointed because I'm a mac newbie, and between this and other problems, have had to restart this mac due to spinning pinwheels of death and the like more in 2 months than I ever have a Sony Vaio Z running Windows 7.  Kind of disappointing that Mac has the less stable operating system.

That's awkward. It may not be the Mac itself making it unstable, but yet programs on it making it unstable (lazy developers maybe). Although do remember that OS X Lion is fairly new, and a few bugs are still being ironed out.
First thing you should do is Repair permissions. Open up Disk Utility, Chose your disk on the Left and click on the Repair Permissions button. This can take about 20 minutes and fixes most problems.
    Questions:
Have you installed any additonal system prefence panels?
Have you installed any programs that alter with WiFi?
Does your WiFi Access point have enough strength for where you are?
If you have installed addional system preferences then I suggest that you go to Finder, and in the top bar click on "Go" and navigate to "Go To Folder". In that box put this: "~/Library/PreferencePanes" (No quotes though - and remember the "~" ).
It'll take you to a folder, copy those into a safe location and remove the contents of that folder.
If you are an Administrator of your computer then do the same in "/Library/PreferencePanes".
Hope all goes well! Good luck!

  • How do i delete a icould email from my iphone when i no longer have access to the email address and my security questions dont match to get in to the account?

I am trying to delete my icloud account from my iphone as i no longer have access to this email and when i try to challenge the security question to access the account apparently i dont know my own date of birth. I cant delete the account as i dont remeber the passwrod and i have a new icloud account that i would like to link the phone to. Any help would be appreciated
    thanks

If the old ID (iCloud account) is yours, and if it is an earlier version of your current ID, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.
This will not work if your current ID is an entirely new ID and is not a newer version of the old ID.

  • Deleted rescue email address and forgotten security questions

Hi, I just recently changed my email address for my iTunes account. I tired to go onto my iPhone and I tried to buy a song, it wouldn't let me until I answered my security questions, which I forgot. I tired to send the security questions to my rescue email, but I deleted my rescue email about a year ago. I have no idea how to change my rescue email without having to type in my security questions. Does anyone know how I could change my rescue email without entering my security questions or will I need to call the apple support people? -.-

You need to call or otherwise contact them.

  • Notification and Network Preferences won't save in Yosemite

When I change my notification centre to ‘Sort Manually’, sort it manually, and change the banners to my liking, the settings hold until I reboot. The same is true when ordering my preferred networks in Network settings. Any way to fix this?

The article at this link provided a solution that worked for me.

  • JInitiator and network computer question

    Hello,
Does someone have experience with running an Oracle Developer
Application on a Network Computer (NC) ?
I am a little bit worry about the jar files. Because a NC does
not have a local cache, I think the JInitiator is downloading
the jar files everytime you set up the NC. Not really a
problem when you have some NC's and a fast network, But what
when you have more than 200 NC's all set up the same time in the
    morning ?

Well, I'd like to bridge the LAN and WAN side for AFP through VPN. But I'm guessing that it'd be like opening my LAN to the whole Internet. That sounds like a BIG security hole. If some kind of extra security could be put in place... like making sure that the server won't even let AFP clients authenticate unless the user is authenticated through VPN... but I'm guessing AFP on each client doesn't check that with the VPN server.
Would the next best thing be to move the clients that need access from the WAN into a DMZ behind the VPN router but before the LAN router? That'd mean I need another router...

My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet". If this is the root of the problem, how can I change ip address?
Ipad will connect no problem to other networks.

First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly.

  • "Back to my Mac isn't working properly because your DNS server isn't responding. Contact your ISP for an alternate DNS server address, and enter it in Network Preferences".

Hi, i am trying to setup back to my mac at home but I get the error "Back to my Mac isn't working properly because your DNS server isn't responding. Contact your ISP for an alternate DNS server address, and enter it in Network Preferences".
There is no documentation on how to solve this anywhere.
I have an Arris router set to bridged mode which is connected to a 5th generation airport extreme. I have tried using the google dns servers instead of the one assigned by the cable company in the AE but I still get the same error.
Any help would be much appreciated

New to BTMM, I got stung today with the silly DNS problem message. Solution:
    1) Flush DNS cache with:
    dscacheutil -flushcache;sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
2)System preferences > iCloud > untick BTMM then tick it again. The warning should have disappeared.
    Edit #1
Apologies for the noise. The warning has come back
    Edit #2
Just found out that BTMM is not compatible with double NAT. That's not helpful.

WHEN I USED TO CONNECT INTERNET FROM MY IPHONE 4S PERSONAL HOTSPOT VIA USB, AN ICON IN THE NETWORK PREFERENCE NAMED "IPHONE" APPEARS.... BUT NOW THIS IS NOT HAPPENING AND I AM NOT ABLE TO CONNECT PERSONAL HOTSPOT VIA USB CABLE. PLEASE HELP ME OUT???

Please don't shout!   Using all uppercase means shouting on the internet.  If your keyboard is stuck please say so, otherwise people will think you are being obnoxious.
Now the first question is, when you are saying connecting to personal hotspot, have you always been using the iPhone to connect to the internet?   Are you someplace where the only place to connect is available via tethering to the iPhone's celluar network?  Or do you have other options?

  • My wi-fi worked fine on Airport Express two days ago.  Now the light is green, but I can't get the Internet on my satellite connection.  I've checked Network Preferences, Aiport Express menu, and the satellite tech support. The Ethernet connection works.

My wi-fi connection from my iPad via the Airport Express Base Station on my home computer worked just fine until yesterday morning.  I have a Macintosh G5 with a satellite connection.  I could not get an Internet connection.  After using the Network Preferences and Aiport Express applications several times, then unplugging and replugging in the computer, satellite modem and Airport Express module, checking the satellite dish for any obstructions, and so on, the computer still wouldn't connect to the Internet.  (The green light was on in the Airport Express module.)  I called the satellite company technical support division last night.  The tech couldn't find any problem with the satellite connection.  When I plugged the satellite modem cord directly into the Ethernet outlet on my computer, I could pick up the Internet.
Today, the Airport Express module still has a green light but still doesn't connect to the Internet.  The only thing I can think of is that lights went out for about 15 minutes yesterday morning.  All of my electronics, except the Aiport Express Base Station, are on surge protectors.  Why would the Airport Express module still have a green light if it was damaged by the electrical outage?
I bought the module in 2009.  I have never had problems with Apple equipment before this. Is this base station fixable?
    I would appreciate your suggestions.

Hello everyone.  I too have experienced the same problem Mary described starting on the same day she mentioned January 12.  I have a G5 iMac, a G5 mini-mac, and a G4 laptop.  They were all working fine but all have mostly the same problem now in that the G4 does not connect at all and the G5s connect once in a while after restarts but do not maintain the connection.  In my case there was no power interruption.  In fact, the G4 laptop was not even connected to the home power connection.  My iPad2 and iPhone 4s wireless work fine and a wireless PC and Android tablet work fine as well.  The G5 and G4 work fine on an ethernet connection. ISP tech support (AT&T u-Verse) was very generous with their time in trying to solve my problem although it was established early on that their connection and equipment was working fine and that the problem was with my computers.  They walked me through a manual reset of all the particulars on IP addresses etc. so the problem was not related to that either. In the end ISP tech support concluded that the problem must lie with the Airport driver.  For some reason it changes the IP addresses to an incorrect address so it cannot connect.  Indeed when I tried the diagnostics on the G4 I got a window Pop-up that said an application had reset my settings. (In retrospect I seem to recall that I may have gotten that same message early on with the G5s but at that time I did not think much about it and went about trying to reset the settings but that process never concluded well) I think that the problem may be that there must have been an update of the Airport software that was not backward compatible with the G5 and older Macs.  I mention all this for two reasons.  First, perhaps someone out there who knows better than I do how to bring this to Apple's attention and perhaps they will address this.  Second, I would be curious to know whether there is anyway one can return a configuration on Macs to some earlier time period (as you can on PCs) when everything worked and then leave it that way foregoing any subseqent upgrades or any subsequent apps?

  • Essbase1113 IP Address and Port Questions

    hello,
everyone, i'm puzzled on a question about essbase.
it'll be so kind if you give me some suggestions.
in our project, we install EMP System 1113 on Win Server2003, but it's in local network. there is no problem when we connect it using client tools in local network environment.
however, we wanna connect the Essbase Server through Internet, we map the server address (such as 10.163.163.163) as an Internet address (such as 111.111.111.111).
we didn't use VPN such tools, and, the address is just a mapping, if we don't map the port, we couldn't connect the essbase server.
here comes the question, how do we map the essbase address and port ? i mean which port should we use, so that we could connect it through Internet ?
    thank you so much.
    wish to reply.
    hawk.

The ports that essbase use are outlined at :- http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12825_01/epm.111/epm_install_start_here/ch06s05s01.html

  • I want to enter the password for a secure WIFI network on several iphones.  If I do this, can the end users somehow extract the ip address and password for the wifi network from the iphone and use it from a pc (at home, for example)?

I want to enter the password for a secured wifi network on several iphones.  If I do this, is it possible for the end users to somehow extract the ip address and password information and use it from a pc/laptop/other mobile device.  For security reasons, I don't want them to be able to to this.
    Please advise,
    Thanks.

If you look at the top left of your screen you will either see a 3G (or 4G if you have AT&T) or you will see the wi-fi symbol.  If you don't see the wi-fi symbol you are connecting to Gmail through your cellular data plan, not via wi-fi.
To answer your question, it doesn't happen often but when it does the steps I mentioned above will normally resolve it.  Hopefully you won't have any further problem with this.

  • Network preferences and connections

I use a wireless router to connect to the net via an adsl modem using a pppoe connection.
I have two connections in my network preferences. One is for the direct, hard line connection. The second is for the airport (wireless connection). I only use one at a time.
    First question:
The First hard line connection always trys to connect automatically to the net when I don't necessarily want it to. Can I stop this or turn it off?
    Second:
When I use the airport wirelessly via Airport (which is always on) it often has problems loading the page and says i am in offline mode. usually refreshing or restarting firefox solves the problem but it can be pretty annoying to have to reload every time. As soon as I turn on my macbook the airport shows it is connected to my corega network (the modem brand). What's the issue?
    Thx

You can change the service order so the Airport connects first, but if you have an interface that's enabled it will always try to connect. Two ways to handle this would be to disable the connection when you don't want to use it, or to set up a different "Location" for your different network needs.
