  • Problem of Copying the Original VM to 2nd VM in Oracle 11gR2 RAC system

    Folks,
Hello. I have been installing Oracle Database 11gR2 RAC system using 2 nodes that are 2 Virtual Machines (rac1 and rac2) on the top of VMPLayer 3.
I follow the tutorial http://appsdbaworkshop.blogspot.com/2011/10/11gr2-rac-on-linux-56-using-vmware.html to do.
The original Virtual Machine rac1 has run correctly. I configure rac1 network (eth0 and eth1) by opening VM rac1 and using command "[root@rac1\] #neat" as root user to invoke the network configuration.
For the second Virtual Machine rac2, I simply copy all files in "C:\VM\rac1" into "C:\VM\rac2". Then I have done the following:
    1) In the directory "C:\VM\rac2", rename "rac1.vmx" to "rac2.vmx".
    2) Change display name from "rac1" to "rac2" in the file "rac2.vmx".
The next thing to do for rac2 is to open the Virtual Machine rac2 and configure its network (eth0 and eth1) by using the command "[root@rac2\]#neat" as root user.
But by this step, I don't understand how to open the Virtual Machine rac2 so that can configure its network (eth0 and eth1).
Can any folk tell me how to open the VM rac2 to configure its network by this step ?
    Thanks.

    Folks,
Hello. Thanks a lot for replying.
The public IP for eth0 and private IP for eth1 in the file "/etc/hosts" are as follows:
    rac1 eth0 192.168.138.35 eth1 192.168.137.35
    rac2 eth0 192.168.138.36 eth1 192.168.137.36
In rac1, I have added 2 entries in /etc/hosts as following:
    #VIP for eth0
    192.168.138.130 rac1-vip.localdomain rac1-genetic-vip
    192.168.138.131 rac2-vip.localdomain rac2-cellar-vip
    Then I execute the command: [root@rac1 /]# ping rac2
    Output:
    PING rac2.localdomain (192.168.138.36) 56(84) bytes of data
    From rac1.localdomain (192.168.138.35) icmp_seq=1
    Destination Host Unreachable
In rac2, I try to add the above 2 entries in /etc/hosts. But cannot save it. The following error message comes up:
"E45: readonly option is set (add ! to override)".
    My questions are:
First, do I need to add VIP in the file "/etc/hosts" for both rac1 and rac2 ?
Second, why rac1 still cannot reach rac2 after add VIP in /etc/hosts for rac1 ?
Third, why the file "/etc/hosts" in rac2 is read-only ? How to change it to be editable ?
    Thanks.

  • TAF with FAN in oracle 11gr2 RAC

    dear all,
our enviornment is 11GR2 RAC with 2 ndoe RAC. it has four different applications accessing the database.
so for each application i have created services as A,B,C,D.
services in NODE1- Prefered service in NODE2 -Prefered
    A B
    C D
services in NODE1- available service in NODE2 -Available
    B A
    D C
now i have the services as described above.
    each services are created with
    srvctl add service -d DB -s A -r NODE1 -a NODE2 –P BASIC –y AUTOMATIC
    srvctl modify service -d DB -s A -q TRUE -P BASIC -e SELECT -z 180 -w 5 -j LONG
    srvctl start service -d DB -s A
now i have enable server-side TAF with FAN. so do i need to provide the TNS entries to application layer namely oracle client
    as below
    AP =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=cluster01-scan)(PORT=1521))
    (LOAD_BALANCE = YES)
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = TEST)
    (FAILOVER_MODE =
    (TYPE = SELECT)(METHOD = BASIC)(RETRIES = 180)(DELAY = 5))))
    or
do i need to add the above TNS entries in serverside tnsnames.ora file?
    1) the connection from jdbc thin or session established via JDBC thin is not having the TAF details in v$session view.
    SELECT machine, failover_method, failover_type,
    failed_over, service_name, COUNT(*)
    FROM v$session
    GROUP BY machine, failover_method, failover_type,
    failed_over, service_name;
if i execute the above query i couldnt find any session is having failover_method as BASIC and FAILOVER_TYPE as select.
all my application tier is using JDBC thin to access the database.
if i use oracle client from application server to access the database i could see my session having FAILOVER_METHOD as BASIC and FAILOVER_TYPE as SELECT.
so please provide me any realtime example for accessing database using JDBC thin with TAF and FAN properties for their sessions.

    Hi,
1.) No if you define a service with TAF, then the TAF information will be provided to the client, without having to specify it again in the TNSNAMES.ora (neither client nor server).
However it does not hurt, if you have specified it additionally (it just makes it more difficult if you want to change something, because the client side does not get updated).
See this whitepaper for more information:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/clustering/overview/awm11gr2-130711.pdf
2.) However it seems you have forgotten to specify something with the service (you seem to be missing -m):
    srvctl add service -h
Adds a service configuration to the Oracle Clusterware.
    -P {NONE | BASIC | PRECONNECT} TAF policy specification
-e <Failover type> Failover type (NONE, SESSION, or SELECT)
-m <Failover method> Failover method (NONE or BASIC)
    -w <integer> Failover delay
    -z <integer> Failover retries

  • Oracle 11gR2 RAC: how to solve "user profile creation mask failed" ?

    Folks,
    Hello.
I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC using 2 Virtual Machines (rac1 and rac2 whose OS are Oracle Linux 5.6) in VMPlayer.
I am using Cluster Verification Utility (CVU) to test the 2 nodes for Grid installation as follows:
    [ora11g@rac1 grid] $ ./runcluvfy.sh stage -pre crsinst -n all -r 11gR2 -orainv ora11g -fixup -fixupdir /mydir -verbose
All items for rac2 are passed. There is only one item for rac1 is not passed as follows:
Check default user profile creation mask:
    Node Name: rac1
    Available: 0002
    Required: 0022
    Comment: failed
There are 3 ways to solve this issue:
    1) In the file /etc/bashrc, change the line "umask 0002" to "umask 0022".
    2) In the file /etc/profile, add line "umask 0022" at the end of the file.
    3) In the file /etc/csh.cshrc, change the line "umask 002" to "umask 0022".
In rac2, I got the same issue in the past. I just change the line "umask 0002" to "umask 0022" in the file /etc/bashrc and the issue is solved.
But in rac1, I have tried each of the 3 options and also combined 1) and 2), 1) and 3), 2) and 3), 1) and 2) and 3). Totally, that's 7 options. But all of 7 options cannot solve the issue.
The script runcluvfy.sh still tests rac1 user profile creation mask failed. My question is:
Do any folk understand how to solve VM rac1 user profile creation mask problem ?
    Thanks.

    Folks,
Hello. I follow the document "Oracle Grid Infrastructure Installation Guide 11g Release 2 (11.2) for Linux E22489-04" and do the following:
    [root@rac1 /]#echo $SHELL
    Output: /bin/bash
This means we need to edit Bash shell file .bash_profile.
    [ora11g@rac1 ~]$vi /home/ora11g/.bash_profile
    Add this line: umask 022
Then I save the file .bash_profile and reboot OS.
Then I run the following command:
    [ora11g@rac1 grid] $ ./runcluvfy.sh stage -pre crsinst -n all -r 11gR2 -orainv ora11g -fixup -fixupdir /mydir -verbose
But the reusult is the same. The issue is not solved as follows:
Check default user profile creation mask:
    Node Name: rac1
    Available: 0002
    Required: 0022
    Comment: failed
Do any folk understand how to solve VM rac1 user profile creation mask problem ?
    Thanks.

  • Need 11gr2 RAC install Guide on Solaris 10 x86 using containers and NFS

I'm looking for an 11gr2 RAC install Guide on Solaris 10 x86 using 2-3 containers. I need to have the NFS server reside in the global zone or on a 3rd container visable to the two rac containers.
    Please share me installation guide!
    Thank you!
PS - I currently have run into an install issue -
Can't change ownership on /oracle/products/11.2.0/ocr/: not owner at /oracle/app/11.2.0/grid/crs/install/crsconfig_lib.pm line 5014.
I suspect the NFS share params from the NFS server in the global zone are not 100% correct to the two rac zones/containers.

Have you visited Oracle Support Services website (formerly metalink) to determine if your desired configuration is supported?
Last time I looked it was not.
That said Oracle database installation guides are fully documented online.

  • How to convert single instance10g db to 11gR2 RAC with ASM

    Hi,
I need your help to decide the plan about how to convert single instance 10g database to 11gr2 rac with asm.
I can have about 6 to 8 hours of downtime to upgrade and move to rac with asm.
db size is about 1.5tb and on AIX.
    here is my plan....
    1) install 11gr2 rac with asm on two nodes
    2) verify rac installation and clustered asm
    3)install 10g oracle binaries( yes 10g )
    4) shutdown production db ( machine prod )
    5) make copy of production and restore on 1st node ( using shadow image , so it's quick and its file system )
    6) upgrade db to 11g ( still of file system )
    7) after successful upgrade, move to asm ( rman backup )
    8) add another node
does it look okay ? OR is there a better approach to save time?
    can someone help me ?
    Thanks...

    Thanks ...
So here is what I thought... suggest if something is not right...
    1) install 11gr2 grid infra on node A and B with ASM
    2) stop CLUSTER ON BOTH NODES.
    3) shutdown prod db on 10g ( downtime starts )
    4) take rman cold backup
    5) restore rman backup on node A on ASM ( as if single instance 11g , no rac parameters )
    6) mount and run upgrade script for 11g, then open db with 11
    7) after successful upgrade, shutdown db node A
    8) change all rac related parameters, spfile, undo, redo for rac environment on both nodes
    9) open db in rac environment
can I do this way ?
My only question is, even though I installed rac on node A and B, in step 5 and 6 I'm using only node A as if it is single instance. Is it possible ?
if it is then I'm good to go...
    Thanks for all suggestions.

  • ASM vs RAID for 11gR2 RAC Environment

    Hi There!
We are planning to install 11GR2 RAC with two nodes Cluster on LINUX in Our Environment.
    Operating System: OEL 5.4
In our hardware we got two dell Servers with 16GB RAM on each plus On SAN side we have only 8 disk (173GB) left for RAC Cluster Setup. I am going to create to database (LIVE/UAT) on This Cluster Setup. Currently Our Production DB size is 6GB and I assume for coming 5 year it will not go beyond 100GB And I keep UAT size 15GB fix with No changes. So how you get the best ASM performance by using my all Resources.
    My question:
    1)     Which is best solution for ASM and RAID in our storage Environment?
    2)     How many Disk group I Create for Both Databases (UAT/LIVE)?
    3)     How many disks should I allocate in Each Disk Group with which RAID Option or if any suggesting for LUN, How do I create LUNS across the Disk which I got?
    4)     I know oracle recommended Two DISK Group DATA&FRA is there any other suggestion for CRS, REDO, and TEMP FILE?
    Thanks for your Assintance.
    Hemesh.

My first question was : Which RAID Option(0,1,5,0+1) I choose with ASM ?Well, it doesnt matter for ASM. At least in your configuration with 8 disks.
RAID0is not an option - forget about it. RAID1 (or combined with more than two disks and an overlayed RAID0 which makes an RAID 1+0) might be an option for write-intensive databases. RAID5 is more for read-intensive due to the RAID5-write-hole but offers "more" capacity at the cost of slower write speed.
I recommended to stick with RAID1 (thus mirroring two disks) and exporting them to ASM rather than creating one big RAID1+0 over all of your disks and exporting the storage as one big chuck to ASM for manageability. If you want to add storage lateron your perfect in line with Oracles recommendations to have equal size LUNs in ASM with two mirrored disks. If you create on big RAID 1+0 and lateron add two disks you have a LUN of 600 GB size and one of 170 GB size...thats a big mismatch.
But If i create TWO disk group then, is there good practice to offer them to both (UAT/LIVE) databases.?Normally there is a separation between UAT and P on storage and on server level. In your case it might be "ok" to place everything in the same disk group. This mainly depends on which database puts the most load on the disk subsystem.

  • Adding ocrmirror and voting disk on another diskgroup 11gr2 RAC

    Hi Gurus,
Can i add ocrmirror on another diskgroup(external redundancy) and voting disk(normal) on anotherdiskgroup (replace) in 11gr2 RAC while databases are up and running?

    Hi
in Oracle 11gr2 voting disk are backed up automatically in the ocr part of any configuration change
Voting disk is automatically restored to any added voting disk
You can migrate voting fıska from non asm to asm without
    Taking download cluster
To add a voting disk to asm
    Crsctl replace votedisk +diskgroup
    Ocrconfig -add +datagroup2
Oracle manage up to five redundant ocr locations
    Hope this helps

  • Install Oracle 11gR2 RAC : Cannot remove directory bootstrap under /tmp

    Folks,
Hello. I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC using 2 Virtual Machines (rac1 and rac2 whose OS are Oracle Linux 5.6) in VMPlayer and according to the tutorial
    http://appsdbaworkshop.blogspot.com/2011/10/11gr2-rac-on-linux-56-using-vmware.html
I am installing Grid infrastructure. I am on step 7 of 10 (verify Grid installation enviroment) and get this error:
    "Free Space: Rac2: /tmp
Cause: Could not determine mount point for location specified.
Action: Ensure location specified is available.
    Expected value: n/a
    Actual value: n/a "
In order to fix the above error, I run "cluster verification utility" according to
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E14072_01/rac.112/e10717/cvu.htm I run the following command:
    [ora11g@rac1 \]$ /home_grid/runcluvfy.sh stage -pre crsinst -n rac1,rac2 -verbose
    Output:
/bin/rm: cannot remove directory '/tmp/bootstrap': Operation not permitted
    ./runcluvfy.sh:line 99:/tmp/bootstrap/ouibootstrap.log: permission denied
From the above output, we can see the directory bootstrap under /tmp causes the problem. The solution is to remove the directory bootstrap. I run the 2 commands:
    [ora11g@rac1 tmp]$ rmdir bootstrap
    Output: Operation not permitted
    [ora11g@rac1 tmp]$ rm -rf bootstrap
Output: cannot remove bootstrap: Operation not permitted.
    [ora11g@rac2 tmp]$ ls
Output: there is no 'bootstrap' directory.
    My questions are:
First, does "cannot remove boostrap in rac1" cause that /tmp in rac2 could not be determine mount point ?
Second, can any folk help to remove the directory bootstrap under /tmp ?
    Thanks.

    Folks,
Hello. Thanks a lot for replying. I have just run the 2 commands:
    [root@rac2 \]# chown -R ora11g:dba /u01
    [root@rac2 \]# chmod -R 775 /u01
ora11g is the user who installs the Grid and /u01 is the directory where Grid is installed and dba is the group.
I go back to Grid Installer Step 7 of 10 in rac1 and check again and see as below:
    Free Space: Rac2 : /tmp
Cause: Could not determine mount point for location specified.
Action: Ensure location specified is available
    Expected Value: n/a
    Actual Value: n/a
The problem is not solved after run the above 2 commands in rac2.
In addition, I have run Cluster Verification Utility using the command:
    [ora11g@rac1 grid]./runcluvfy.sh stage -pre crsinst -n rac1,rac2 -r 11gR2 -orainv ora11g -verbose
Output: All of items for rac2 are passed. There is only one item for rac1 is failed as below:
Check default user file creation mask:
    NodeName: rac1
    Available: 0002
    Required: 0022
    Comment: failed
As we see above, the result of CVU command is not the same with Grid Installer step 7 of 10 (Installation Environment Verification):
CVU command doesn't find /tmp mount point problem for rac2 that Grid Installer does.
Grid Installer step 7 of 10 doesn't find user file creation mask problem for rac1 that CVU command does.
I have tried to find out whether creation mask failed for rac1 causes /tmp problem for rac2. I have changed the line "umask 002" to "umask 0022" for rac1 in each of the 3 files below and run CVU command each time for each file:
    rac1:
    /etc/bashrc
    /etc/profile
    /etc/csh.cshrc
But chang the line "umask 002" to "umask 0022" for rac1 in each of the above 3 files does not solve the problem.
    My questions are:
First, why is the result of CVU command not the same with that of Grid Installer step 7 of 10 ?
Second, why change the line "umask 002" to "umask 0022" in 3 files can't solve creation mask problem for rac1 ?
Third, how to solve /tmp problem for rac2 and creation mask problem for rac1 ?
    Thanks.

    HI,
the second node (second root.sh) should not want to "create" the diskgroup data, since it is already there.
This pretty much sounds like you tried to start both root.sh (on the first node and on the second node) at the same time, not waiting for it to finish on the first node.
It is important, that before you start the root.sh on the second node, it has to be finished successfully on the first node for the cluster to update the information.

  • How to migrate data from oracle 9i database to new machine 11gr2 RAC ASM

    Hi Expert
I need your expertise to advise me what is the best method to move data from oracle 9i database to new machine running oracle 11r2 RAC database with ASM.
Currently my production server running on HPUX ORACLE 9I database with normal file system. My new server is running SUN SOLARIS SPACR 64 bit ORACLE 11gr2 RAC with ASM. What is best method to move data over so it will be consistent. Any guide can refer.
    Regard
    William

    Hi William,
See the note in metalink Migration of Oracle Database Instances Across OS Platforms [ID 733205.1] to saw the Endian Format of your OS. If is the same you can use the RMAN to convert the database to another OS, if not the only option is using export/import (Transportable Tablespaces).
To upgrade from 9i to 11g, see the note 837570.1 - Complete Checklist for Manual Upgrades to 11gR2.
To migrate your FS to ASM the only way is using RMAN, so see the note - How to move a datafile from a file system to ASM [ID 390274.1].
    Hope this help you.

NOTE: VLAN 1501 is for data connection and VLAN 10 is for heartbeat for one RAC cluster and VL 1601 and 11 is for another RAC. all together four LDOMS.
    ldm add-vswitch vid=1501,1601,10,11 net-dev=aggr1 primary-vsw0 primary
    ldm add-vnet pvid=1501 vnetprod primary-vsw0 guest1
    ldm add-vnet pvid=10 vnethb primary-vsw0 guest1
    ldm add-vnet pvid=1601 vnetprod primary-vsw0 guest2
    ldm add-vnet pvid=11 vnethb primary-vsw0 guest2
vnet inside the LDOM are not tagged:
    vnet1: flags=1000843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 1500 index 3

Yes, I can connect to the vswitch interface on the control domain. I didn't specify any PVID because my understanding is that PVID will tag any frame with the PVID VLAN by default. basically the PVID for this interface is 1.
Here's the VNET config for the other LDOM in the RAC cluster:
    VSW
NAME MAC NET-DEV ID DEVICE LINKPROP DEFAULT-VLAN-ID PVID VID MTU MODE INTER-VNET-LINK

    vnethb primary-vsw0 2 00:14:4f:f8:12:c1 10
    Thanks for reviewing my configuration.
