Ip constantly needs renewing

Can anyone help, I have had this problem for about 5 months now and it is progressively getting worse.  Whenever I boot up my PC, or even if I leave it turned on, then next time I come to use access interent, my internet connection has been lost and the only way to get it back is to either allow the BT help tool to work in which case it invariably renews the IP lease, or to manually run "netsh winsock reset catalog" in the command prompt and reboot.
Other devices (tablet, iPod etc) in the house can still make a connection but can't print.
All devices, including my PC and printer, are wirelessly connected to the BT hub.
While this used to be an intermittent start up issue, it gradually became a daily problem and now I even have trouble with loss of internet connection during an evening.
I have checked my hub settings and cannot see any IP conflicts.
Can anyone advise a solution to this problem as it is driving me crazy!!
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Thanks for the advice.  Sadly have tried both options with no success.  Even got the router to forget everything, turned off every device that needs wireless, restarted the pc, got it to forget network and then reconnect, so with only the pc and wireless printer connected (with IP addresses at either end of the IP range) still got the same issues.  Am becoming resigned to having to do "netsh winsock reset catalog" and reboot EVERY time I use the computer.  There must surely be a root cause, but as to what, I am at a loss - when this started it started spontaneously one evening and I could not link it to adding any new equipment or changes made to the computer.  Not sure if Windows or the router have done some updates which have triggered it

  • Constantly needing to reset Airport Extreme

Hi! I have an Airport Extreme network set up in my office with an Airport Express acting as an extension. The Airport Express works for a day or so and then flashes amber the next day. I constantly need to unplug and plugin the Airport Express for it to work. If anyone has any tips, that would be great!

Seems to be the firmware update. This board is full of complaints. Hopefully, someone at Apple is working on a fix. It worked fine before this dumb update.

  • IMac 24" (Late 2006) 10.4.11 constantly needs formatting!

I have no idea why in the past 6 months to a year my iMac keeps getting more and more problems, and each one more serious. In about a week, I will have had this computer for 4 years, and for the first 3, there has never been the problems I have had in this past year.
I know this post is a bit long, but please read through it and help me if you can.
    The problem this time:
A few days ago, in the afternoon, I decided to upgrade the instant messenger I was using, aMsn, from 0.98.3 to 0.98.4 which all ran smoothly, until that night, a lot of my programs decided to quit itself.
I have previously experienced Safari force quitting itself when my computer lags too badly, or when I watch videos using the Facebook player, and fine, I accept the fact that scripts probably are not entirely compatible.
But this night, it was different, first, it quitted something on Dashboard (I think it was the clock or weather), then it quitted iTunes, both which have never happened before in the past 4 to 5 years, then it quitted Safari, then quitted aMsn, all while I was doing nothing more than browsing through Wikipedia or using Google. Then aMsn brings up a lot of error messages, after clearing them all I put my computer to Sleep. Then the next morning, I woke up, put my password in to get back on, aMsn signs in, brings a lot of the same errors I had the night before, then crashes (not force quit, you just see the cursor loading for ages), nothing from the keyboard, mouse or remote made it respond and soon, it took me back to the Log In screen for no reason.
At the Log In screen, I put my password back in to log on, it loads for ages, takes you to where you can see your desktop picture, then goes back to the Log In screen again, and I have tried that multiple times.
I finally gave in, and turned the computer off, but when I turn it on again, it would stay on the first screen with the Apple logo for ages, then jump to a blue screen, and makes no progression afterwards.
I have tried everything suggested in the Problem meets Solution part of the mini booklet that came with the computer. Ran a thorough hardware check with the discs that came with the computer, nothing wrong, so eventually I wanted to format the computer, but it could not find the drive at all!
Mine was named Macintosh HD, as that was the default name, and it was not found, so I opened Disk Utility, clicked on the drive, clicked repair, and after a while, the repair was successful, then I verified it as well, all seems good. Back at the installer, it recognised the drive, chose it, and it asked me for installation type, I chose to restore all the programs that originally came with the computer WITHOUT deleting my old files. All done, computer restarted, I can now log in. Deleted aMsn right away and installed the old version, 0.98.3, again, and started to do system updates, as it was reverted back to 10.4.7.
All was fine, until it decided to do the crash again when I was on Safari. Previously I thought a system file was crashed by the new aMsn, so I restored the system back, deleted aMsn without hesitation, but now, the computer is back to its old self, and it crashed, with the cursor showing it is loading.
You know when your computer is loading, and you can hear the processor working if it was loading/lagging when your room is quiet? Well, it was not that. The computer was really quiet, and you can hear something. At regular intervals, I heard sound, that seemed to be made by the processor, on a "tick tock" beat. Computer was very quiet, it was not a lag, processing sound, just a "tick tock" beat sound. Like last time, nothing made the computer respond, and it took be back to the Log In screen, likewise, could not log in, so I had to put the discs in and do everything once again, only this time, when I was in Disk Utility, the drive could not be repaired, saying something about an error when trying to exit. With absolutely no other choice, I had to Erase the drive, meaning I have now lost everything, literally everything.
Starting from scratch, step by step, I started to build up the computer again, updates, programs, etc. Went to bed, then got up this morning, and before I could even try to restore files I have backed up, which is very few, the same thing happened again, iTunes crashed for no reason, then Safari crashed for no reason, then on Skype, the computer totally froze and crashed and I can hear that "tick tock" beat, processing sound again.
Knowing what would follow, I turned the computer off, and on again, and like previously, cannot reach the Log In screen, so once again, I tried to repair the drive, which failed, only with an extra error saying something about "catalog B tree node", and with no choice again, erased the drive, and now on again!
I am now writing this message with absolutely no system updates, back with 10.4.7 etc.
I mean, did that aMsn 0.98.4 crash/delete a system file that is vital, causing this series of problems, if so, is that file not included with formatting the computer? Or do I need to download it separately?
Or is the hardware test incorrect? I actually do have a hardware problem, but the thorough scan of hardware using the discs did not get it?
I am absolutely lost, I have never formatted a computer and have the problem still persist me, if this is a worm, virus, trojan or whatever, I would think formatting works, but no, it has not.
Has anyone had the same problem/experienced this problem before?
Anyone have any suggestions that could stop this?
I still have work for university to do, and this is just not helping.
Should I just scrap this computer and get a new one? Because I am really tempted to punch through the screen every time I hear that "tick tock" beat, processing sound.
Should I upgrade back to 10.4.11, and attempt to find BootCamp for 10.4.11 to partition the computer and only use Windows?
With no idea where the problem is, I really do think it is a software one and want to switch to a different operating system, and yes, it is sad, I actually much prefer the Mac OS X more than Windows, Mac OS X is just much more convenient, but I am out of choice it seems.
Please help me if you can.
    Many Thanks,
    From Lelouch
(P.s. Actually, I missed something out, besides the no progression from the blue screen after the white/grey Apple logo screen, one of the times before formatting, I restarted the computer, it actually did not reach the blue screen, it was constantly stuck on the first screen with the Apple logo, and eventually, the computer just restarted itself and repeated a few times before I went for the format process.
I also want to note, after restoring system files and applications WITHOUT deleting my own files the first time, just before the second format, when I held down the Option (Alt) key to choose the drive or the disc, the drive was not recognised as the name I have named it, Macintosh HD, but rather, it was called EFI_Boot (I think?), which was ultimately the reason I had to format completely, as my drive was no longer there according the system AND Disk Utility.)

What made me think I need to format if I upgrade the OS?
    I just presumed so really.
What made me think I need to constantly format computer with my problem?
Well, after many attempts to repair the drive, which fails, cannot even reach the log in screen, I am left with no other choice?
And also, I have to note now, System Preferences keeps crashing without reason, it either takes ages to load, just by clicking it to open, or clicking something within it, or it just crashes.
And temporarily, it freezes the computer totally, with no response.
Seriously, am I missing a system file or something? Anyone experienced this problem before?
My computer is literally a blank computer right now, installed VLC and Shades, updated Adobe Flash Player, installed Skype and Adium. I would say Growl from Adium caused it, but it has happened prior to Skype and Adium. Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks,
    From Lelouch

  • Constantly need to repair disk using Recovery HD to get Lion 10.7.2 to boot

    I have a Macbook Pro 17" 2.8ghz I7 with 8gb of ram, OS X Lion 10.7.2, model series MacbookPro6,1....
Every time i reboot the computer or turn it on i get past the gray screen with the apple, it begins to load my desktop but stops just before it finishes loading everything.  I can see my background image, some of my desktop icons, anywhere from 1/4 - 1/2 of my icons at the top, then i get the pinwheel and it doesnt progress any further than that.
The only way that i can get the computer to boot after this is to hold down the power button, wait for it to turn off... wait 20 seconds, reboot into the Recovery HD and use the disk utility to repair disk and repair permissions on Macintosh HD. This usually works, but one time i actually had to download a new copy of lion.  After i repair disk & permissions, i reboot the computer and it responds like nothing has happened.  My problem is that i do not want to have to constantly repair the disk and permissions every time i reboot the computer.
I did have one problem before all of this began, but it was about a month before this started occuring.  I sent a bunch of unneeded documents and duplicate files to the trash as well as a couple of programs that didnt work anymore using appcleaner.  When i tried to empty the trash, it deleted all but one file, or should i say most of the file.  It was Dragon Dictate... it deleted everything from the main app package except for a plugin file.  The plugin apparantly took up 0 bytes on the disk, and nothing i could do would allow me to delete the file.  Finder froze every time i tried to delete the file, or should i say hung at the emptying trash window.  Finder was still working.  I could still open windows and move files around, however, i couldnt get the trash to empty.  I left the screen up all night into the next afternoon, and it still hadnt deleted the file.  The only way i could get it to not hang was to remove the file from the trash, and delete what else i had to delete.  The only way i was able to get trash to stop hanging was to force relaunch finder by going to Finder>>Force Quit...>> select finder>> relaunch.  Sometimes finder would relaunch, and sometimes it wouldnt. The only guarantee that i had to relauch finder was to reboot the computer.  Eventually i jsut moved the file to a folder named Can not delete..... Now a month later i have to repair the drive each tiem i want to reboot the computer.
I know the drive isnt failing because i dual boot to windows, and that works flawlessly.  No problems with reading/writing, other permissions, hardware, software, bluetooth, network, monitor, sound, camera.... nothing wrong on the windows side.

Your problems started when you used AppDelete, it searches for files and can accidentally delete some files as well.
You should never use such a program, it's no subsitute for the developers uninstaller.
Because your issues reside in the Applications folder, a global use, your going to have to perform a backup, erase and resintall of Lion, all your programs and return of files from backup.
As you learned, a OS X overwrtie install isn't going to work.
Also when you use Disk Utility to Erase the Lion Parititon, use the Erase>Security Opiton> Zero aspect, it takes longer but maps off failing sectors which may be responsible for your issues and ones in the future.
Map off as many as these failing sectors as possible, with Zero Erase and Erase Free Space once in awhile. SSD owners need not apply.

  • Why does itunes constantly need to update files?

I update my files manually on my iPod touch. Whenever it is plugged in, every few minutes iTunes says, "updating files," and takes a moment to update, I suppose. But while it is doing this, my iTunes becomes unresponsive if I try to do anything; play or change a song, or make changes to artist, album, etc on any song. As I am constantly updating my files to include album name, art, and other things, it seems to become unresponsive and need to be restarted almost every time I use iTunes. This is very aggrivating and I don't know how to make it stop??

Try posting in the iTunes forum.

  • My DSL Network constantly needs for me to do the always allow action

The DSL network that I have on my house constantly loose connection to the internet and that requires for me to open the networks preferences an go through the Assist me, Diagnostics process and so on, until I click the "always allow" button. After I do this, access to the internet is restored.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!!

Is the problem wireless? Or is the problem the DSL connection, sync or authentication?
You will need to give us more info..
How is the DSL network different to the TC 2nd gen.. ??
Do you run multiple networks? What modem do you have? Is it running in bridge or router mode?
How is the TC connected and is it part of the network.. is so what part?? Router, wireless AP, switch etc.. the more info you give us the more we can help.
Log from the DSL modem is invaluable if you are having dsl issues.. please post any issues from that..
For pure wireless issues.. this is usually a good time to do a clean out.. open the wireless in network preferences.. go to the list of all the remembered wireless.. and clear out the whole lot. Reboot the computer, rediscover the wireless and make sure you remember the network.

  • No startup sound (I constantly need to restart PRAM)

    Hello,
I have a MacBook Pro 2012 mid 13" and some time ago I noticed, that startup sound was gone. I googled a little bit and saw that resetting PRAM should solve the problem. It did. But after a few days startup sound was gone again. So I reseted PRAM once again, and it fixed the problem. Now the sound is gone again and I'm tired of reseting PRAM, I'm pretty sure that's not how it should be. Does anyone have any idea what's the problem here? Maybe that's a sign that I need to change my RAM? :s

Stupid me, the sound was muted, so there was no startup sound everytime. I just restarted my macbook with volume up and now it works perfectly. Problem solved.

  • HD constantly needs repair

If I were to run VERIFY DISK every day on my MacBook I would get the same results: files differ by one file and folders differ by one folder...requiring a REPAIR DISK. This is getting old...how can I determine which file is the culprit here?
I obviously don't run REPAIR DISK every day, but I've verified it may days in a row and it always needs it. It seems to hold for maybe 8-10 hours before something goes wrong with this one mystery file.

    Larry McJunkin wrote:
V.K....I know I have to repair from the OS disk...been in the computing business since 1983 Just thought there might be some trick to finding the offensive file, since there is always just one file and one directory. Every other Mac I've had has never given me this specific problem.
I'll try Disk Warrior, but won't hold my breath. If I end up having to reformat, I'll just move off my data, reinstall SL and updates, then all 97 app (yuck) as bringing back a clone just might bring back the problem. Remember, it's a "file" causing the problem...not a sector on the drive.
what is the exact error message? does it say that the number of files is different by one? then reformatting (not just erasing ) the drive and cloning the clone back will fix the problem and won't reintroduce any back. file system error of that sort generally means one of two things
    1. an orphaned file that lost its place in the directory. running disk repair should fix that and the orphaned file will be placed in the lost+found folder at the top level of the drive.
    2. a leaking inode that's pointing to a nonexistent file or folder. this again ought to be fixed by disk repair. but either way doing a file level cloning can't carry over problems like this to the clone. just don't do a block level cloning and you'll be fine.

  • I constantly need to repair permissions, hundreds need repairing weekly

Hi, this is not a new problem with my MacBook Pro, and I have recently encounter the same problem whilst trying to fix a friends MacBook Pro after she approached me with the same issue. I have had a mac in new form or another since 1994 so without being a certified Mac technician, I know my way around pretty well. I use my mac all day every day and am always on grand to help my friends with theirs so I'm totally baffled by this issue.
Each week I have to repair my permissions, in fact if I use it more that usual then it will be a disk utility fix in 2 or 3 days, the permissions that need to be fixd vary depending on what programmes I have been using, itunes comes up more than most.  After a few months of this I decided that the hard drive must bat fault so, having the old one still in warranty, brought a new one, backed it up and returned the old one to the store hoping to get a refund, they tested it and found no fault with the drive... So I reformatted it and cleaned it and have had no problems with it since it's in a hard case and used as an external.  Again after a few weeks I have the same permissions problem back again on the new drive... So I diced to update the operating system, now running 10.8.5, it's made no difference. I still have fix my permissions every couple of days as it get he dreaded rainbow wheel and my work flow becomes impossible. So my fiend came to me with her MacBook Pro, I much newer model than men and told me of the dreaded spinning wheel . I fixed her permissions and then again in  a few days time the spinning wheel was back. I changed her hard drive too and the problem persisted the same as my own.
Please can someone help me figure this out ... Why am I getting these constant permission issues
I have downloaded disk warrior and put both macs through the software,
Is anyone else having these problems...
Sorry for the long winded explanation. Thanks for taking the time to read it.

Hi. Yes I know of the ones I can safely ignore, but I'm talking about hundreds of permissions that need to be repaired every few days and the reason why I run disk utility is because my programmes won't run properly and every action is greeted by a minutes worth of rainbow wheel. That is when I rerun disk utility to find yet again a hundred or more permissions that have to be repaired and continue to have to be repaired.
Desperate for some help with this.
    Thanks

  • IPod Touch 4g  CONSTANTLY  needs to be restored.

Here's my problem in a nutshell -- about every second or third time I try to sync my iPod, iTunes tells me it "cannot read the contents" of it and that I need to restore it. After I restore, I can sync successfully one or two times before it says the same thing again. Every time (until now) I've been restoring to backup, but even a factory restore had the same results. I did a factory restore two days ago, and today I'm already having to restore it again. The longest it's gone without iTunes calling for a restore was about ten days.
I bought my Touch about two months ago, and it's been giving me this problem pretty much from the start. Other than this syncing issue, it works perfectly. If it weren't for the time-consuming inconvenience of having to reload 50gb of music and videos every time this happens, it might not even bother me so much.
I've tried every suggestion I can find -- resetting, restarting (the computer and the iPod), changing cables. I always wait for sync processes to finish before touching it, and I always eject it in iTunes before unplugging it. The iPod works fine in the meantime and never gives any warning (like glitches or crashing) before a restore is needed. But it's such a consistent problem that I'm worried now that this might be hardware-related. This is my first Touch, but not my first iPod, and I'm no newbie when it comes to dealing with iTunes' bizarre and frustrating behavior, but I have completely run out of ideas at this point. Advice?

Mine does the same thing. Bought it April 2010. For the first month or so it sync'ed fine. Then it just stopped. Have done about a dozen restores. Will sync 2 or three time then has problems reading the device. Am running latest iTunes and iPOD software. The Apple store says the device is OK, so it not there problem and they have no solution or suggestion.
I am so fed up with this POS and it kludgy software. Seeing as this is 2011, home computers have been around for over 25 years, the iTunes software is version 10, I don't think it is too much to ask for a device to just plug in and work.
I have looked at and considered iPhones and iPads. But there is no way I would take one for free, forget about paying for it. If this thing wasn't so expensive it would have been smashed months ago.

Yeah, that advice is all over the place. It certainly won't hurt. But the benefits of doing it are, IMO, greatly exaggerated.
Repairing permissions can be a useful task if you are having a problem that can be traced to incorrect permissions on an application, folder, or file that is installed with the Mac OS X installer. Because those are the only things (and only a subset of those at that) that repairing permissions fixes.
But somewhere along the line, people starting using Repair Permissions as some sort of magic pill that can fix any ailment. Computer slow? Repair permissions. Screen flickering? Repair permissions. E-mail message won't go on the trash? Repair permissions. That advice is handed out (ill-advisedly IMO) on a daily basis on these forums. And, of course, there are those who advocate repairing permissions both before and after any system update. IMO that advice too is based on urban legend. I never do it.
If you do repair permissions, and it finishes with "Permissions repair complete", then it's done and you don't need to worry. The "errors" it returns are not errors at all and nothing needs to be fixed. They're just "messages", not errors. If you don't want to see them, simply uncheck the "show details" box.
If Repair Permissions finishes with "permissions repair failed", or "the "underlying task reported failure on exit", then worry.

  • Audition CS6 constantly needs to be registered with adobe application manager?

I have audition CS6. For it to open, it needs adobe application manager. However app manager automatically upgrades to creative cloud and deletes itself.
So everytime I try to open audition, it says app manager is missing, and I have reinstall it and register audition. Of couse then then app manager gets deleted, and the next time I wanna open it this process keeps repeating!!
How can I get audition to work with creative cloud?
when I go to "update" in the help menu of the program, it says it is up to date. my operating system is windows 7.

  • My iMac crashes using iPhoto, the database constantly needs repair, and upgrading software patches causes the screen to hang

I am not sure what is going on.  I have kept current with all upgrades and now when I attempt upgrades my system will hang on the white screen, forcing me to turn the machine off and on.
iPhoto has been really buggy (latest version) - keeps telling me that I need to repair my photos.  Last night I was working on a photo book and it crashed twice.
Once it rebooted the iMac, the second time while uploading the book it crashed iPhoto.
Since this is past apple care - I am not sure what to do.  I am in the US and I can't find any information on pricing for a visit to the genius bar.
The only thing I have going on with this machine is two seperate user accounts that access a shared iPhoto and Music library on the shared portion of the HD.
    Thanks for any help.

Back up all data, then follow the instructions in the support article linked below:
iPhoto '11: If you see a message that iPhoto can’t access one or more photo files
If you still have problems, try the other options in the "First Aid" dialog.
