IP Not Working - SES Not Working - Securing?

Question

I'm a beginner when it comes to setting up a wireless network, so I apologize in advance if this is basic knowledge.
My router is hooked up. I am getting the internet on my desktop (connected to the modem and router) and I am receiving a signal on my laptop. Now I am ready to secure the network.
I pressed the SES button on my router and it says to click on a button that should be in the tray. Well, the button isn't on either tray...the desktop and laptop. So I attempted to do it manually by going to the IP on the internet, but it gives me a Page Cannot Be Displayed Error. Is this because my router is set up incorrectly? OR am I supposed to be accessing this site from the LAPTOP (the one with the wireless card) only? I currently am receiving a signal on the laptop, but my IE is messed up. I tried to use the AOL Explorer like I had been using when that computer was hooked up to a LAN, but that isn't working. I figured I must use IE, so in that case, I cannot get on the internet on my laptop until I get IE fixed. Does this mean I cannot secure the network until then or am I supposed to be able to do this on my desktop?

SES is only applicable if you are using a Linksys Wireless Adapter but I believe the laptop has an internal wireless card right? If your answer is Yes, follow these steps:
On wired desktop, launch your IE and type http://192.168.1.1 into the address field. Login with no username (leave it blank) and type “admin” for password then hit Ok to bring up the router’s Web-Interface.
Go to Wireless Tab, change the Wireless Network Name (SSID) from “linksys” to something else (any Wireless Network Name you want) then click on Save Settings button.
Go to Wireless Security (one of the sub-tab under Wireless Tab), select WEP under Security Mode. Type your wireless security password (this can be any wireless password you want) on the Passphrase field then click on Generate button. Hit the Save Settings button to apply the changes. Take note or copy the Network Key 1 (this is your Wireless Network Key) on a piece of paper for reference.
On your laptop, right click on the Wireless Connection Icon (can be a single or a double monitor icon) at your system tray then select View Available Wireless Network. Highlight the name you set on the router (SSID or Wireless Network Name) then hit Connect button. It will automatically prompt you to enter the network key, type the 10-charaters Network Key 1 then click Connect. If you’re wirelessly associated to the router, the icon will say Connected you may go ahead and check your internet access.
