"IP over Fire" & Classic

I decided to try "IP over Firewire" to get more speed above Ethernet in connecting my iMac G5 and my MacBook Pro. Everything seemed to be working well with the FW externals belonging to each Mac being on that Mac and sharable from that Mac, until the MBP went to sleep, and I logged off and back onto the iMac. The MBP's externals were suddenly on the iMac's desktop. So, then I came here and read about "IP over Firewire" causing other Firewire items to "spread" or not work at all.
Found out I need another FireWire Bus. OK, so I'll get an ExpressCard/34, and it can be the $80 one, rather than the $250 one because the iMac is already limited by a FW400 port.
Now I find out on my own that Classic will not start with the "IP over FireWire" cable plugged in. Unplug it, Classic starts fine. Haven't gone into checking to see if Classic will come out of sleep with the cable plugged in.
Anyone know if the second Firewire bus will solve that prob?
Apple giveth with one hand and taketh away with the other ...
Cheers,

I hadn't considered the need for separate FW buses on both Macs. At first, I thought a second bus on the MBP would be sufficient. But, for a constantly connected cable, there would likely still be the prob of the iMac's FW externals spreading to the MBP. I think 2 totally separate Firewire buses in each Mac would solve at least the prob of externals showing up an the "other" Mac's desktop. I don't know what, if anything it would do concerning the Classic non startup prob. And, there's no way I know of to get a second FW bus on the iMac.
I also don't know that Gigabit Ethernet would be faster than Firewire. In my testing, comparing 10/100 versus FW 400, the same file etherneted in 10 mins, while it FW'd in 10 secs.
Also, from my testing, it appears stable, as long as both Macs are set up for it, both are awake and stay awake, when the cable is plugged in and the entire time it is plugged in. And, if it doesn't work, just start over, don't go mucking about trying to find out why not. I crashed OS X on both machines just by opening System Preferences, and clicking the "Network" button, while the cable was connected ...
I think I'll have the cable there, and just connect it when I need it.

  • Import (v. 7.1.5) iPhotos from old iMac to new iMac (v. 9.2) using Migration Mgr. over fire wire.  All photos (  many dups) appeared in EVENTS and PHOTOS in the new Mac – but NO ALBUMS.

Attempted to import 6.5 GB of (v. 7.1.5) iPhotos from old iMac to new iMac (v. 9.2) using Migration Mgr. over fire wire.  All photos (plus many dups) appeared in EVENTS and PHOTOS in the new Mac – but NO ALBUMS.  I read a previous response to a similar question -- to copy the pictures library to the new computer.  How best to do that?

There's actually an option to iPhoto Library Manager that makes this all almost work flawlessly (and work well enough for me). With the exception of Photo Albums that the pictures are part of, if you select "Library > Rebuild Library..." and then select "Scavange Orphaned Photos" check box, then it will put all the Photos and Movies into the "Scavanged Photos" album. It matches the modified pictures to their originals. It preserves all the event names and photo groupings. All the meta-data I could spot check it got right (although with 44k pictures, I only checked a few). If you fail to select this option, however, it will find no pictures at all when it goes to rebuild the library (this was true of the small test libraries I tried as well as the big, monster 280GB library I just finished converting). The conversion process took 5 hours to run, but in the end produced a library my new iPhoto can read and that I can interact with. I'll be suggesting to the iPhoto Library Manager folks a notation that would estimate the number of Orphaned Photos and display that number as a hint to the user that the option would be useful.
Edited: Thanks to Old Toad and LarryHN for their help in finding which of the many options to transition this library to 9.5.1 I needed to use. Sorry if I took my frustration of the past several months out on you guys for generously trying to help me.

  • IPod wont sync over fire wire

I have a 30gb Photo iPod and a 1.42 MHZ G4 mac mini. I plugged in the iPod over fire wire and then the iPod loaded the first time. The second time i plugged it in the iPod froze and would so did my computer until i unplugged it by force. Then i plugged it in using the USB 2.0 cable and it mounted perfectly. This is the only computer in my house with USB 2.0 and being there is only 2 USB slots, one for my keyboard and one for my mouse, I do not have the slots to spare. I have rebooted the computer and the ipod. The same thing happens when i plug it in over firewire, both freeze. I have iTunes 4.9 and iPod version 1.2.

I would recommend updating iTunes to 5.0. I've had issues in the past where my iPod was running newer software than iTunes and it caused issues.

  • A search engine called DynaSearch has taken over fire fox without my permission

I think My brother has attacked my computer, he found my note book and i now have 160 spam when I had only about ten before, and even an xxx dating service used my daughters name to make me click to their site, saying," Sheila has a message for you". Since then fire fox started crashing every ten minutes, and now it's not crashing because a site called DynaSearch has taking over the usual Google trademark that used to apesr on my page, this is a search engine that has taken over Fire Fox without my permission correct. How do I get Fire Fox back, and get them off.

  • My web search tool bar taking over FIRE FOX

I HAVE HAD TO UNINSTALL "FIRE FOX", BECAUSE OF A TOOL BAR CALLED "MY WEB SEARCH". WHEN I UNISTALLED FIRE FOX, I WAS ABLE TO RE-INSTALL IT USING "GOOGLE" AS MY TOOL BAR. BUT WITHIN A FEW DAYS, THE "MY WEB SEARCH" TOOL BAR CAME BACK, AND AGAIN I COULD NOT GET IT TO STOP TAKING OVER FIRE FOX, EVEN WITH MY INTERNET OPTIONS. WHEN I CONTACTED "FIRE FOX'S" SUPPORT ON {1/17/2012}, THEY WANTED TO CHARGE ME! TO REMOVE WHAT THEY SAY IS A VIRUS! I THINK THIS IS STUPID, AND I HAVE UNINSTALLED " FIRE FOX ", AND I WILL NOT USE IT AGAIN, BECAUSE OF THE VIRUS....

I heard about the iPod Nano recall over fire risk, I entered my info online and it said that I was eligible, but since early December I have not heard anything more from itunes/apple. In which time someone I know has sent off theirs and received their replacement nano already. Is there an email address I can email to request info? Would be much appreciated! Thank-you.

use the info you got in the email and check your repair status on apple's website

  • Considering ipod touch over ipod classic, a few questions

Hello, I was hoping some of the current users of the iPod touch 2nd generation cna answer a few questions for me concerning the ipod touch, particularly those with an ipod classic as well.
I have had a 160 GB iPod classic for about a year. I had to take it back to be replaced twice because of harddrive failures. After I got the last new one I was fed up and decided to sell it on ebay. I have heard there were issues with the 80 and 160 GBs and the 120 is much better. There is a software upgrade that includes using the genious feature on your ipod for the 120's that was never available for the 160's. And since they discontinued the 160's, I'm assuming there was definately something wrong with that and Apple is too proud to admit to it, so they just roll with the 120's. So with that in mind I figured I'd sell my current 160 since the worst I could do is get the better model of the classic?
So then I started thinking, what about an iPod touch? Here are my concerns with goign with a touch over a classic...
The WiFi would be a huge benefit. I travel a lot and often don't feel like bringing my laptop with me. So when browsing the internet, I was wondering how it worked with Hotmail? With facebook? I know youtube works, but how does it work with other sites that are heavy with Adobe FlashPlayer, like Hulu.com? Or watch news clips from CNN or other things like that.
I use my ipod a lot in my car, and I don't think the touch screen would be very good for this to switch songs, anybody have any experience with this?
The flash drive is very appealing to me since I had 2 classics harddrive fail, but the small size is a concern, anybody have any opinions?
Can the touch be used in disk mode? Does it store full resolution files of photos?
I'm not big into games, but if I had a touch I know I would start.
Will I just get spoiled and wish it was an iPhone or something with 3G connection to the net?
    Thanks for any help!

The 160GB Classic was essentially the 1st Generation Classic, it was replaced by the 2nd Generation 120GB Classic, which as you have pointed out has the Genius feature etc. With the exception of the most recent Shuffle, Apple always discontinues production of the previous generation, and it has nothing to do with Apple admitting to anything. I too had to go through 2 160s before the 3rd one worked correctly, it happens. Did the Classic you sold on eBay work correctly.
Thanks to changes by Microsoft you can now use the mail app on the Touch with a hotmail account.
There is a Facebook app in the iTunes App Store, I don't use it so I can't vouch for it but you can go to the Apps Store and read the reviews.
There is no Flash plugin available for the Touch and it is probably going to be 2010 before one is available so no you won't be able to use Hulu.com, etc.
It will be harder to switch songs on the Touch in your car unless you install an iPod connection kit (if your radio supports it, the will allow you to control the Touch from your radio/steering wheel/whatever.
If you have a large iTunes library and want it always with you then you need to lean towards the Classic. If you can live with swapping things around you can go with the Touch. A big advantage to the Touch is the plethora of applications that are available on the iTunes Store, many of them free.
You cannot currently use the Touch in disk mode (don't know if version 3.0, coming this summer will add this) and it does not store full resolution files of photos.
I had a first generation Touch which I purchased on the same day that I bought my 160GB Classic. I sold the Touch and moved to the iPhone, you get spoiled with 3G access.

  • Starting over-- without classic???

heres the short story-- Ive been runing os9 of one version or another on imacs over the years and currently have 9.2.2 running exactly how I want it. A couple months ago i stumbled on a killer deal on a g4 power mac- still an older machine but it blows my imac away- it runs 10.1. This is my first real expirence with osx and now that Im getting comfortable with it-- Im ready to upgrade to tiger (Im waiting for my media exchanged version) Furthermore, I want to zero out the hard drive- the guy that sold it to me was not a mac guy at all and I have kind of a mess on my hands. My question is.... do I have to install os9 before i can install tiger if I have really no desire to use classic environment-- dont get me wrong, I love os9, but I have a whole seperate machine dedicated to it, i also use the imac as an external firewire drive for the G4 for backing-up-- my point is that my os9 needs are covered.
And if anyone has any tips on a custom installation of Tiger I would really appriciate it- I really want to do this right the first time.

You will need to read the notes with the particular firmware update.
Usually the update requires the Mac to be booted from OS 9 or OS 8. In that situation you would need to install the appropriate OS on your hard drive to install the firmware update.
Once the firmware is installed, there is no need to reinstall it when you erase the OS or replace the hard drive. The firmware is installed on the motherboard.

  • Withholding Tax Change over from Classic to Extended

Client is using Classic Withholding Tax. They are able to see the tax codes while posting the vendor invoices through F-43 & FB60. But they are not able to see the tax codes on the invoices processed through MIRO. They want the tax codes to be displayed on the invoices processed through MIRO. Can anybody please help me in finding the solution for this issue??

    Hi Nagesh Ram ,
MIRO transaction only supports the Extended withholding tax. If you still want to deduct the tax with classic withholding tax in miro. You block the BAPI of Extended withholding tax and activate the amount split in the T.code: OBY6 .
You also contact your Developer to do this.

  • MAX does not communicate to SCXI-1000 under using DAQ-6052E, Win XP over fire wire. "Cannot perform test at this time".

I cannot find the SCXI chassis containing two SCXI-1102 boards using the MAX software. I have added the SCXI 1000 using the new command, and manually configured the cards, but the MAX software refuses to admit that they exist. The 6052E passes its test. I am stuck until the software recognizes the SCXI system.

Based on similar problems answered, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers. I have checked the driver version against the Web, and it is the latest. I have tried one other 6052E, and I have tried each of the 1102B's separately. I do not have a different SCXI chassis, but I have checked all three fuses, and tried setting an alternate address. Because of plug 'n' pray issues with this combination, detailed manual installation instructions were provided, but they do not work under Win XP. I have autodetected the 6052E however, and manually configured the SCXI chassis and 1102B cards. The latest claim is that it cannot find the 1102B. (See attached screen shots for details). This equipment is brand new out of the box, and I expect it to work. Do I
need to buy additional SCXI hardware to prove that this hardware doesn't work?

  • Transferring files from old computer with fire wire

I'm transferring files from my old computer to my new one. The old one has three hard drives. Everything from the startup drive transferred OK over fire wire, but the new computer doesn't see the 2nd and 3rd hard drives on the old one. Is there a way to link these? Thanks!

Click here and follow the instructions, setting up FireWire networking from System Preferences if desired. FireWire Target Disk mode will only connect to the master ATA drive on the ATA 0 bus, and will shut down the computer if there's nothing at that location.

  • CLASSIC don't works as under 10.3.9!

I have made a new install of Mac OS 9.2.2 and 10.4.5 on two seperate partitions onto my G4 AGP Graphics("Sawtooth") with 466 MHz and HD 20 GB.
After I started Classic it seems to start like every time,
but at the end of the starting process nothing happened!
No OS 9 program is able to start. If i choose a OS 9 proggi
the CLASSIC starts again and nothing happens...
    The same with "no extensions"!!!
Under OS X 10.3.9 all worked well?
Is it once again a DiVX-problem?
    What can I do?
Thanks for any help and greetings from Freiburg, Germany!
    Manfred

    Hi EPA;
Since this is a forum for Tiger specific questions, you might have better luck if you post your question over in "Classic Envirnoment" under "Mac OS X Technologies". Over there there are a bunch of guy who are much more knowledgable with "Classic" then here.

  • Ard over firewire

I have Apple remote desktop 3 running on my system. I can connect to my servers over Ethernet, but I cannot connect to them using IP over fire wire. It sees them but shows they are offline and cannot connect. Is there a way to do this using IP over fire wire?
    Thanks

Biggest reason is I have a development server in my office, and I don't want it on the network when I'm making configuration changes, that might effect the whole network.

  • Node over Firewire

I have a dual G4 that is connected to a MBP 17" over fire wire. I can see the node listed in the node list. I can see the meter for the node load. File sharing is on and firewalls are disabled, but none of the nodes light for any track. I am running a session that is maxing both G4 processors so the node should kick in. I also only see 1 core in the node, and I believe it should be 2 just like the G4.
Also, which state means the node is enabled for a track. Is it the one with three dots, or the one with 2 triangles facing away from each other. Also if I have any 3rd party plugs on a track does that disqualify it from being processed on a node. As well would bussing a track to buss with 3rd party plugs negate the node process.
    Thanks

yep, for me nodes are a nice idea but pretty much no use at all until it supports 3rd party plug ins.. it's not that they're less efficient per sé, it's just that a lot of them are quite complex algorithms and use a fair bit of CPU juice. when that gets addressed the whole idea will look more interesting to me.
I'm not sure about whether having a 3rd party plug on a track will stop it from being processed on a node, for the other effects on it that are not 3rd party ones. you should test it out.. see if it works when you just have logic plug ins and nothing else. my feeling would be that it doesn't work. however, moving the 3rd party ones to buses and sending signal to it might be a workaround. again, test it out. I do seem to recall that the node button should light up if it's working..
btw, it's the two triangles that means you are sending to a node, the three dots is idle.

  • Classic Scenario to Extended Classic Scenario

    Hi friends,
We have a requirement to migrate an existing SRM 5.0 solution from Classic to Extended Classic scenario.
Is there any best practices document available from SAP in this regard? Also what are the things that need to be taken care of in particular? It would be great if some one can share his/her practical experience.
       Thanks in advance!
    Best regards,
    Pradip

    Hello
If it is Plan driven procurement involved, better to go for 'Classic' scenario. Extended classic scenario is best suited for self service procurement of indirect material.(of course both scenario are best for indirect material!)
Now Switching over to Classic ti Extended classic:
    1) Technical settings-->Define product categories for backend
Here source sys is ERP backend and the Target sys is SRM client
    2) Nu. ranges for Local P.Os
    3) In Cross application basic settings,  Activate extended Classing Scenario and Backend pur.grp responsible
    4) In Define Objects in Backend system(Pur.req, Resrv, P.O)
Ensure no entries are there. Since this step is not required for Extended classic
    5) BAdi need to be activated.
Before all these, ensure there is no pending documents/transactions exists. All need to be closed. No open purchase documents!
The best guide for ref. is by Shah Khan.
