IP over Firewire AND Ethernet  connected cluster?

Does anyone have any experience with IP over Firewire and Qmaster? What I'm trying to do (for now) is to have a file server connected to a bunch of Firewire HD's, then that connected to two other macs via IP over Firewire, and all that be a cluster.
The file server is the controller. Or I want it to be at least. Connected to this cluster are two workstations, connected to the file server via Ethernet.
So it's File Server with several external Firewire HD's connected to it with the video data. Connected to this file server are two macs via IP over Firewire which will be services only nodes. Connected to ALL of this over ethernet are two editing workstations. Qadmin can't seem to see the two mac nodes connected via IP over Firewire.
The problem is that Qadminstrator can't see the two macs connected to the file server via IP over Firewire. I'm wondering if for some reason data can't go from Ethernet to IP over Firewire and back again.
Any tips or suggestions? I'm just about out of ideas for now.

I was also NOT ABLE to use both nodes connected in a MIX of ETHERNET and FIREWIREover IP.
I WAS able to get a 4 x NODE cluster working using SHAKE & COMPRESSOR/QMASTER using all GbE EThernet - I went out and bought a cheap 8 x PORT ethernet GbE hub and all my problems went away.
HEre's what I had initially and what I did and it DIDN'T work consistently..:
Hardware Initially:
• g5 QUAD and 2 x MBP Dual Core 15's + 1 x MBPDC 17inch.
• G5 QUAD GBE1 connected to #1 x MBPDC 15 on its EN0 with cable
• G5 QUAD GBE2 connected to #2 x MBPDC 15 on its EN0 with cable
• G5 QUAD FW0 connected to 1 x MBPDC 17 on its FW1 with 6 pin FW cable
• G5 QUAD is set as CONTROLLER+SERVICES
• MBPDC's are all SERVICES ONLY.
• thus 3 x SUBNETS
SETUP#1- problem symptoms
• via QMASTERADMIN - G5 CONTROLLER could see MBPDC 17 and ONE of the MBP15;s but not all of them.
•tries various configs on each FW and EN0 for boths FW and EN paths.. never consistent view..
• removed some FW disks from FW400 path that were attached to CONTROLLER G5 host ... could then see ALL as a MIX of THERNET and FW. (Same happens using FW800 - although avoided this because of sperious DISK issues wth external FW800 disks on G5 QUAD).
• created cluster (not a quick cluster)- sent simple long I-FRAME based DV-PAL to smaller DVPAL) codec test to compressor and set the CLUSTER to the QMASTER on I defined.
• set QMASTER controller sys pref to use ALL NETWORK PATHS and disbaled the AIRPORT subnets on each MACHINE)
• PROBLEM was only G5(controller+services) and TWO of the services nodes (MBPDC's) were processing - NEVER all three! It didn't seem to matter what IP path was onnected (EN or FW).
• - all the above was a NO go waster of time. (aggh)
so..
HARDWARE SET UP #2 and what worked first time!
• purchased 1 x GBE Ethernet hub (8xport) w/P/supply and four 1m ethernet cables
• g5 QUAD and 2 x MBP Dual Core 15's + 1 x MBPDC 17inch.
• G5 QUAD GBE1 connected to GBE HUB
• #1 x MBPDC 15 on its EN0 with cable to GBE HUB
• #2 x MBPDC 15 on its EN0 with cable to GBE HUB
• #1 x MBPDC 17 on its EN0 with cable to GBE HUB
• G5 QUAD is set as CONTROLLER+SERVICES
• MBPDC's are all SERVICES ONLY.
• thus 1 x SUBNET....!
WORKS EVERY TIME First time
• all machines work to render or transcode.
• for SHAKE RENDERING, each CPU has a process.. so there seems to be as many as (4 x 1)+2 + 2 + 2 rendering processes at any one time.
• less for COMPRESSOR as one per HOST (4 in my case)
Also.. in QMASTERADMIN - always:
• have the SOURCE and TAGET disk volumes|directories ou need MOUNTED (NFS works for me) and
• set to NEVER COPY.
• set QMASTER sys prefs/Advanced/"USe NEtwork Interface = EN0 (or whatever one you want to use. 'd imagine that a FW hub would also do the job (IPoFW).... but for me I had all free ETHERNETs NICS so I used them.
• oh .. enable all your airports NICS.. .. in the above QMASTER wont use this subnet.
This speeds the WORKFLOW up enormously because the source material does not have to be COPIED to each host (well I think that what it means).
So the solution in my case was to have ALL the HOSTS on a SINGLE subnet..
works for me.
hope that helps

  • IP over Firewire and ethernet at the same time?

Is it possible to use both IP over Firewire and ethernet at the same time?
I want to use my TB hard drive attached to one Mac via Firewire 800 to backup another Mac also attached to the same drive via Firewire 800. I can only mount the drive on one machine at a time so I need to share it out to the other Mac. It works great if I set it up to do strait IP over Firewire, with static IPs, but that means I can't connect to the internet because my ethernet connection on both machines becomes the secondary connection method. Similarly, if ethernet is primary then I can't connect via Firewire. Is there a way to set it up so the Macs will know which method to use depending on the IP address?
I am using 10.5.1 on both machines.
    G5, 1.8 GHz, 15.GB RAM
    MBP, 2.4 GHz, 4GB RAM
    Thanks!

    Certainly.
In the network control panel I set Built-in FireWire to the top of the service order list, followed by Built-in Ethernet.
Next, I set Built-in FireWire to Configure Manually with the address 192.168.1.xxx and the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.xxx, making sure the Subnet Mask is set the same on both machines and that the IP address is different on both machines and different from the Built-in Ethernet addresses.
I applied the settings, turned on Sharing on both machines, then mounted whatever shared drives I needed by connecting to the other machine using the FireWire IP address.
Now I am able to share drives using FireWire 800 - which works great when used with Time Machine - and still use my normal ethernet to surf, etc..

Can i force specific users/groups use different network interfaces?
i want 2 macs to be connected to server via firewire 800 and other people via ethernet.
how? as soon as i connect these 2 macs to network hub, then all traffic goes through ethernet..

    Certainly.

  • Wireless and Ethernet connection for U330 not working - Help

I need help with my wireless and ethernet connection for the U330 notebook. I can not connect to the internet since I received my U330 and if I try to connect to a wireless router, it knocks other users off. I called customer service already and they asked me to download the driver on the Lenovo Downloads and Drivers page. The page can not be found when you try to download the drive so I was not sure if there is another place I can download it since customer service mentioned that they will send me a disk which will take some time. Thanks in advance.

Your router may be knocking you due to lots of facts. Those Ensteins suggested drivers reinstall because that's the only thing they know.
Try changing your encryption mode, try adding your laptop's WiFi MAC-adress of whitelist of Route, try disabling firewall, try increase strength of signal.
Driver is located at consumersupport.lenovo.com - do not hesitate to check.

  • Using Xsan to carry data over dual gigabit ethernet connections?

A designer (mostly non-technical) colleague of mine has claimed that Xsan transfer data (not metadata) over dual gigabit ethernet, in lieu of Fiber Channel, with metadata flowing over a third ethernet. Is this true? Has anyone done an install in this manner? I can't find any reference of this, anywhere.
If anyone can help shed some light on this, I would appreciate it!
    Thanks,
    Ben

If you're planning on connecting to the SAN in this manner, be aware that the amount of bandwidth is MUCH smaller than fibre channel. (That's why X-SAN used fibre between clients and the SAN)
So... if you're thinking of pulling uncompressed HD through ethernet (even Dual Ethernet) you're going to be woefully disappointed.
Having said that, we regulary connect dozens of "story editors" to our X-SAN via a single gig E "reshared" connection. The secret is that we ONLY use "off-line RT" media for this connection. We've locked out our "Full Res" media from this kind of connection because it will only jam up the system and bring our internal system to it's knees. I would regard this kind of "tapping in" to the SAN as a "secondary" method, not your primary way of accessing the media.
    Good luck.

  • Automatic switch over from wired ethernet connection to wireless (different internet networks)

I have an Imac connect to 2 different internet service providers 1) a wired connection via ethernet giving a 10mbps download speed but unfortunatley the signal can randomly drop for a period of seconds, minutes or even hours, which I then have to manually disable the ethernet connection and switch to the wireless provider, a tedious task..
I was wondering if there is a way whereby i can set the ethernet conection to automically switch to the wireless connection during the periods explained above?
    Thanks for your assictance.
    David

    OK, thanks for the update.
Let's try to figure out which device is actually providing the PPPoE service. It will be either your modem or the AirPort Extreme router.
Normally, the PPPoE connection service is established on the modem by using a web page for configuration. If you have setup the PPPoE service this way, then the AirPort Extreme must be set to Connect Using -- Ethernet.
Please use your computer to check some settings as follows:
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup > Click the Internet icon
Look for the Connect Using setting near the top of the page
It will be set to either "Ethernet" or "PPPoE"
    Which setting do you see?
Note...if you are still using OS 10.4.x as you indicate, this may not be the path to find the setup information. It may be in an older application on your computer called AirPort Admin Utility.
Sorry, I can't remember much about 10.4.x, so you may need to look around a bit on your computer.

  • Target Display Mode And Ethernet Connection.

Can I use my iMac as a display for a Mac Mini using Target Display Mode while using the iMac as a slave for the Mac Mini via ethernet?

    OK.
I have a 2011 iMac which I use as my DAW. First I want to transfere the entire hard drive contents over to a Mac Mini(fusion drive) using Apple Migration Assistant.
Next I'll trash most everything on the iMac except for my DAW plugin libraries and then install and set up Vinenna Pro 5.
Next I'll connect my iMac to the Mac Mini with a TB cable in Target Dispaly Mode.
Then I'll connect the iMac and Mac Mini using the ethernet ports to access Vienna Pro 5 with my DAW(host) software.
Apple states that the USB and FW ports won't function on the iMac while in Target Display Mode but does not mention ethernet so I'm asuming that it will.
    What do you think?

  • Can MBP run both WiFi and Ethernet connections at same time?

I've been running my mid-2012 MBP via USB and WiFi.
I acquired 8-port 10/100Mbp Switch.  Can I run hardware like printers, external HD from MBP via the Ethernet switch and still keep USB connections and WiFi net for other purposes at same time?
(I found USB-ethernet adapters on internet)

Macs and many PCs can keep multiple network connections going. When you look at the list of connections in the Network system preference, the one on top is the primary connection and if you want another network interface to be the primary (like Ethernet) you use Set Service Order to drag it to the top of the list.
But when you do that, I think all services use whatever is primary. What I don't know how to do is make specific applications use specific network interfaces.

  • Replacement Homehub 2.0 and Ethernet Connection

    Hi all,
PLEASE HELP!  I have a HomeHub2.0 and have it connecting via wireless to my laptop and through ethernet to my desktop (as the network card doesn't work).  This worked perfectly until our HomeHub died.  We bought a replacement HomeHub (through ebay) and this works ok wirelessly.  I am trying to connect to the internet on my desktop via the ethernet and nothing is working.  I have tried to open the HubManager already installed on my desktop but it says "Unable to Connect to Hub".  I have tried to go into my internet setting and access properties to check ISP addresses etc but really don't know what I'm doing.  I did notice that through the control panel I checked the Network Connections but there was nothing there so I added the Homehub using the info on the back of hub.  It seems to have set up a connection but again nothing is working.  I've been trawling the internet and even downloaded new drivers for my Emachines 3230 thinking it may be the drivers but I don't know how to reinstall them? I'm in a muddle.  Please help, I need to access my employer database on the desktop to do a return to Inland Revenue in the next few days but without internet access I'm bleeped!
    Thanks
    Natalie

Have you reset the home hub to factory default by pressing the recessed reset button for about 20 seconds, while it is powered up?
Also, many of the old home hubs 2.0 have a number of problems, so you may have been sold a faulty one.

  • Leopard and ethernet connection

    Hello
I've just bought a Macbook, straight out of the box it's great except it won't connect to the internet via my ethernet cable.
I have a G3 ibook which runs Panther and it has been connecting with no problems whatsoever, and thankfully I do have it as internet connection is important..
I know there are a few questions on the same topic and I have tried some of the suggestions but nothing's helping. I don't have wireless internet, but I know that is working as it randomly connects to outside wireless sources.
I've tried "renewing DCHP lease", manually inputting the IP address that my ibook uses, but I am not computer savvy so any suggestions or advice in really plain English would be great.
Thank you! I am so frustrated by this.

Thank you! That seems to have done the trick.
I noticed, through the Network Assistant, that it changed IP addresses a couple of times and then everything seemed to work fine.
Also, I had to go into Firefox and change the Preferences manually so it would use the IP address - is this normal? Not a big deal cos now it works!!
Thanks again for your quick reply.

  • Time Capsule and Ethernet Connection

Switch Time Capsule To Wired Connection
I have a Time Capsule (sometime in 2010) that I use to have wirelessly connected to my iMac (May 11). Recently I connected the iMac via its ethernet port to one of the ethernet ports on the TC. The TC is my LAN wired and wireless router and works great for the Internet. Yes,  DHCP is enabled. I have turned on my wifi for the iMAC since I want it only via ethernet.
However, now I do not see the Time Capsule on my desktop anymore.
SInce I previously have configured the Time Capsule to "join a wireless network", do I have to reset everything to get TM to work with TC via wired? Is there a way to do it without resetting TC?
    Any help would be great,
    Thanks
    Brian

If you use wireless to get in, then simply turn off the join a wireless network and go back to the original setup.. but resetting to factory is no big deal .. it will not do anything to your backups.. you will just need to redirect the imac where the backup drive is.

  • TS1369 My ipod, i connect ti with a usb cabble and it always says that it is connected with a firewire and please connect it with a usb cable, What can i do?

i dont know what to do and itunes doesnt recognise it

There is a good chance something is lodged in your iPod's dock connector socket or some of its pins may be bent. I would still try to use compressed air to blow it out just in case and also double checked for any damage.
Perhaps you can try resetting it as well. To do this, toggle the hold switch on and off, then press and hold the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together until the Apple logo appears.
